Notes and Cautions
Before you begin the installation of Windows NT 4.0, there are a few things you should be aware of:
1) Please read the entire contents of the Operating Instructions that were shipped with your laptop. This will allow you to familiarize yourself with the various aspects of the CF-71, as well as becoming comfortable with the BIOS Setup Utility.
2) This installation guide is for the CF-71DJxxxxx, CF-71EYxxxxx, CF-71GYxxxxx only. Do not use this guide to install Windows NT 4.0 on any other model of Panasonic laptop since the BIOS setup and drivers are different for each model. (the “xxxx” denotes different configurations of a specific model)
3) These instructions are a guide to installing the retail version of Windows NT 4.0. If you ordered your Panasonic laptop with the Windows NT 4.0 operating system (part# CF71-NT), you should reference the Windows NT installation guide that was shipped with your laptop. Panasonic Technical Support offers assistance with the Windows NT 4.0 operating system on all Panasonic laptops. However, unless the Windows NT 4.0 operating system was ordered from and installed by Panasonic, you will need to contact Microsoft directly for any assistance with any third party software or hardware conflicts not directly associated with the laptop.
4) If you need assistance with these operating instructions, or with a Panasonic laptop loaded with the Windows NT 4.0 operating system, please contact 1-800-LAPTOP5.
5) Please read the entire contents of this Installation guide before proceeding with the actual installation of Windows NT 4.0.

Tips on Installation
1) Do not insert a PCMCIA device at any time before or during the Windows NT 4.0 Installation
process. We strongly suggest you wait until Windows NT 4.0 is fully installed before attempting to initialize any PCMCIA cards.
2) During the install process you must open the CD-ROM drive before each reboot. (you do not
need to remove the CD) The laptop will reboot twice during the Windows NT 4.0 installation process (four times if you choose NTFS). If you do not open the CD-ROM drive before the system reboots, you will boot from the Windows NT CD-ROM, and will have to begin the installation process again.
3) Panasonic strongly recommends that you install the sound and video drivers before you install
any Windows NT 4.0 Service Packs. After extensive testing, there have been instances where the system has behaved undesirably (system locks up, mouse pointer freezes, etc.) when this step in the installation process has not been adhered to. Although this undesirable behavior does not happen all of the time, it does raise enough concern to make this recommendation an integral part of the Windows NT 4.0 installation process.
