Figure The AudioView 5x21 radio binocular
AudioView™5x21 AM/FM Radio Binocular
#9314
Congratulations on your purchase of an Orion AudioView radio binocular. Whether you’re at the game listening to the play-byplay, or enjoying nature with accompanying classical music, you’ll find the AudioView to be not only great to look through, but also great to listen to. These instructions will help you use your binocular and radio. Please read them carefully.
Installing the Battery
Push the battery cover in the direction indicated by the arrow and lift it from the body of the binocular. Install the included AAA battery as shown on the diagram inside the battery casing. Then replace the battery cover.
Adjusting for the Distance Between Your Eyes
The distance between the eyepiece lenses of the binocular should be adjusted to match the distance between your eyes, called the “interpupillary distance.” To adjust the binocular, hold each barrel firmly; move them together or apart while looking through the binocular with both eyes until you see a single, round field. Make this adjustment before focusing.
Focusing
AudioView binoculars feature a convenient center focusing knob. However, because each of your eyes may differ slightly in their focus, the binocular also includes a right eye diopter adjustment. Follow this method for focusing: With both eyes open, rotate the right eyepiece to the full counterclockwise position, then sight on a distant subject. Cover the right objective (front) lens with your hand (be careful not to touch the glass lens). Turn the center focusing knob until the image in the left eyepiece is sharp. Now cover the left objective lens and focus the right side by rotating the right eyepiece (do not adjust the center focusing knob) until the image is sharp. The binocular is now focused for your eyes. Make a note of the diopter setting located on the right eyecup so you can return to the same setting quickly in the future. With the right eyepiece now set, focusing is achieved by simply rotating the center knob.
Using the Radio
Insert the earphone jack into the earphone receptacle located on the side of the binocular (Figure). Place the speakers of the earphone in your ears. If properly placed, they should not fall out when you move your head.
Rotate the volume control counterclockwise until it is almost, but not quite, turned as far as it will go. Then flip the radio power switch to either “AM” or “FM”. Adjust the tuner until you find the station you want to listen to. The arrows on body of the AudioView indicate where the radio is tuned. The arrow closest to the objective end (front) is the AM scale; the opposite arrow marks the FM scale.
Once you have located the station you want to listen to, adjust the volume control until you are at a comfortable listening level. Do not use excess volume as ear damage may occur with long exposure to loud sounds.
When you are finished listening, switch the radio power switch to the “OFF” position to avoid draining the battery.
Pop-Down Eyecups
The AudioView binoculars feature pop-down eyecups. Normally, the eyecups are used in the up position for use without eyeglasses. However, if you are an eyeglasses wearer who wishes to take advantage of the full field of view of the binoculars, simply push down the eyecups to put them into their down position. Again be careful not to touch the glass lenses with your fingers.
Cleaning and Care
Although AudioView binoculars are water-resistant, they are not waterproof. Avoid exposure to excessive moisture.
The lens surfaces of your binocular are vacuum-covered with antireflection coatings, which can be damaged with careless handling. Avoid touching lens surfaces with your fingers or any coarse material. Clean the lenses about twice a year, or more frequently if they get noticeably dirty. The dust that builds up on them promotes mold growth, which could etch the glass and destroy the coatings. Always use lens cleaning tissue and fluid designed specifically for multi-coated lenses. Do not use tissue or fluids made for eyeglass or household use. To prevent unnecessary dust build-up, store the binocular in its case and keep the lens covers on whenever possible.

To clean the binocular, first brush the lens with a soft lens brush. Then puff air on the lens with a blower bulb or compressed air to remove any large particles. Next, put two drops of lens cleaning fluid on a sheet of lens tissue (never directly on the lens). Wipe the lens gently in a circular motion, taking care to avoid undue pressure or rubbing. Quickly remove the excess fluid with a clean, dry lens tissue. Clean only a small area at a time, using a fresh lens tissue on each area.
Storage and Cold Weather
All optics, when exposed to excessive temperature changes or high humidity, have the potential to fog up. In cold weather, allow the optics to adjust slowly to the outdoor temperature prior to use by storing the binocular (in its case) in a cool area, such as an unheated garage or the trunk of a car. Before bringing the binocular back inside a warm house after use, again store it in a cool area for an hour or two, then open the case, remove the binocular, take off the lens caps, and let everything dry overnight. Store the instrument in a cool, dry place; storage in a humid environment will result in mold growth that destroys the optical coatings. This is not covered by the warranty.
