TRULY MUSICAL
Compact Audio System Lineup 2008
mini components_EX.qxd 08.5.21 6:59 PM Page 2
Convenient, Compact, and Truly Musical—Audio Systems with the Right Attributes
Convenience, simplicity, and style: three essential elements of a good compact audio system. Under the Onkyo name, it gets a lot
more ambitious, with audiophile-quality sound, innovative technologies, and undeniable performance. At the hear t of each Onkyo
system is an award-winning CD receiver design that produces soul-inspiring music. It’s a high-end approach to creating an
integrated, space-conscious audio solution.A solution that looks and sounds great in living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, offices—
anywhere you wish.
Proprietary Onkyo Speaker Developments for Sublime Audio
The accompanying speakers are worthy of praise and feature some remarkable speaker
developments designed to match the respective receivers musically. The woofer cones follow our
A-OMF Monocoque design, incorporating a multi-layered diaphragm fiber that has been shown to
improve mid-range clarity for a vivid, natural sound. Also, to deliver high-frequency sounds with
finesse, each speaker’s ring-drive tweeter restricts low-frequency interference from inside the
speaker. And a precision designed duct—the Aero Acoustic Drive—further
mitigates interference between high and low frequencies.
Front Panel USB Interface for Mass Storage Devices (Such as Flash Drives and Portable Audio Players)
More and more of our music is being purchased and stored on PCs. Integrating USB flash drives
and portable audio players with Onkyo’s compact audio systems enables you to get the best out
of your digital music files (e.g. MP3 and WMA).A front-panel port lets you connect storage devices
that support the USB Mass Storage Class Standard and relay digital files from your computer or
MP3 player for more expansive music playback.
Sturdily Built to Suppress Even the Smallest Vibrations
Every element inside these compact receivers—from the capacitor s to the circuit substrates—has
the potential to produce vibration noise. That’s why so much thought has been put into the
construction of every CD receiver in the range—from the robust, rigid chassis and aluminum front
panel to the drive mechanism. We can maximize the potential of the overall system’s sound quality
by focusing on how even the smallest detail contributes to noise.
High-Quality Binding Posts for Secure Cable Connections
Poor binding posts not only degrade the sound, they also break easily. You will find quality banana-
plug-compatible posts on all these compact audio systems. The transparent binding posts on the
CR-725 and CR-525 are gold-plated to further protect the signal and to prevent tarnishing.
The Option of iPod Playback Through RI Dock for the iPod
*
Onkyo’s RI (Remote Interactive) function enables Onkyo system owners to integrate compatible
components for operation via a single remote control. It also enables a dedicated iPod dock to be
connected to any of these compact audio systems. Simply place your iPod in the dock and use the
system’s remote control to navigate and play back MP3 files. The RI Dock offers what
independent experts have called a “heftier and more detailed” sound compared
to other direct connections.

Amplification Design Built Around the Onkyo Sound
Due to obvious size limitations, compact audio systems present various challenges for amplification design,
particular ly when audio quality is the key consideration. Onkyo’s solution is a time-honored, tried-and-tested
design concept: Wide Range Amplifier Technology (WRAT). Applying WRAT as the backbone of our compact
audio systems enables three distinct advantages: 1) A wider frequency response compared to other compact
audio systems; 2) Reduced amplifier distortion at high volume; and 3) Better control of current and
electrical/mechanical kick-back from speakers. It’s a formula for producing music
with exceptional tonal balance, clarity, and vitality.
Vector Linear (VL) Digital Modulation Circuitry for Accurate Conversion
VL Digital modulation circuitry enables effective digital-to-analog conversion in Onkyo’s switching amplifiers and
select compact audio systems. To prevent spike noise from introducing inversion-timing errors during the
conversion process,VL Digital converts the analog audio signal with a high degree of accuracy. When an analog
input is received, the vector generator outputs a current propor tional to the size of the analog input. This
current is sent to an integrator, where it is charged. When the charge reaches a specified value, the trigger
operates and inverts the output pulse. Spike noise is eliminated as negative
and positive charges of the waveform cancel each other out.
Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry for Signal Preservation
With all Onkyo components, preserving the integrity of the audio signal is a fundamental concern. And this range
of compact audio systems is no different. The included Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry prevents noise from
adversely affecting the audio signal when it drops close to the noise floor, by making adjustments to the gain that
reduce attenuation by 50%.This ensures that even the slightest instance of noise is prevented from degrading
audio when volume is increased.
Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry (VLSC) to Maintain Clean Audio Signals
Experts agree that isolating the playback and amplification stages in any compact audio system will vastly
improve performance. Systems that incorporate VLSC at the playback stage can produce a noise-free analog
signal from digital music sources. This technology is effective in removing pulse noise during the digital-to-analog
conversion process, thereby ensuring you get the best possible audio from
CDs and compressed formats such as MP3.
Wolfson®Microelectronics Stereo Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs)
These compact audio systems support an efficient integrated amplification design with precise
processing devices. As a prime example, in both the CR-725 and CR-525 you will find Wolfson
stereo digital-to-analog converters (DACs) with high bit-rates and
sampling rates. The expertise of Wolfson Microelectronics makes
a significant contribution to audio quality.
