How to use this Guide
This User’s Guide describes the C9300/C9500 Finisher. The printer is described in a separate document.
The contents of this Guide are arranged to take you through the following steps to make the best use of the Finisher:
• Awareness of safety issues
• Finisher Components
• Finisher Installation
• Using the Finisher
• Troubleshooting
• Maintenance
Note: You are advised to read the sections of this document in
the order in which they are presented. Once you are familiar with the equipment you can refer to specific sections in isolation via the Table of Contents or Index.
For further information regarding general Printer functions, please refer to the C9300/C9500 User’s Guide.
Safety instructions
This machine has been carefully designed to provide years of
safe, reliable performance. As with all electrical equipment, however, there are a few basic precautions that should be taken to avoid personal injury or damaging the machine:
Read this guide carefully and save it for future reference.
Read and follow all warning and instruction labels on the
machine itself.
Disconnect the machine before cleaning. Use only a damp cloth.
Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners to clean the machine.
Do not use the machine near water, or spill liquid of any kind into
it.
Make sure that the power source matches the rating listed on the
back of the machine. If you are not sure, check with your dealer or with your local power company.
• To avoid damaging the power cable, do not put anything on it or place it where it will be walked on. If the cable becomes damaged or frayed, replace it immediately.
• The power outlet into which the machine is connected must remain accessible at all times.
• Aside from the routine maintenance described in this user’s guide, do not try to service the machine yourself. Opening a cover may expose you to shocks or other hazards.
Page 6
• Do not make any adjustments other than those outlined in this user’s guide as damage may be caused to the machine.
• The machine employs a grounded plug as a safety feature, and it will only fit into a grounded outlet.
• If you can not plug it in, you probably have an older, nongrounded outlet; contact an electrician to have the outlet replaced. Do not use an adapter to defeat the grounding.
Section 1
Finisher Installation
This section explains how to:
• Install a C9300/C9500 Finisher with its supporting Cabinet
• Functionally test the Finisher. The C9300/C9500 printer can be configured up to five paper
trays before starting installation of the Finisher and Cabinet. The trays include: the original tray (Tray 1), an additional tray (Tray
2) and an additional HCF unit (Trays 3 through 5). The minimum configuration required for installation of the Finisher is one extra Auxiliary tray. If required, details of fitting and configuring these trays are found in the printer’s User’s Guide.
Primary Procedures
The main steps involved in the Finisher installation are listed below and expanded as required in the following sections
.
1. Check that sufficient space is available for the installation (See “Checking installation space” on page 4.).
2. Unpack the Finisher (See “Identifying component items (Finisher)” on page 6.

Finisher Height Requirements
When installing the Finisher, it is absolutely necessary to maintain the proper height ratio with respect the printer. A good rule of thumb to remember is that the height of the Finisher is equal to the height of the printer plus 2 trays. As long as you maintain that perspective, the Finisher will install correctly.

Troubleshooting
For a full list of error and warning messages, refer to “Appendix C - Error and warning messages” on page 45.
Counteracting paper curl
If the paper emerging from the Finisher displays significant curl (1) it might not stack properly. Also, curled paper might cause jams to occur in the Finisher.
To counteract such curl, you can adjust the position of the Decurler Lever.
1
Page 34
Setting the Decurler Lever
1. Confirm that the Decurler Lever (1) is in the horizontal position i.e. the setting for normal operation.
2. To counteract the curl, rotate the Decurler Lever upwards as far as it will go.
Note: Depending on the direction and magnitude of paper curl,
it is possible that setting the Decurler Lever as above might cause a paper jam or stacking error to occur. In this event, return the Decurler Lever to its horizontal position.
Clearing a paper jam
When a paper jam occurs, the following message appears on the printer control panel:
REMOVE FINISHER
nnn: PAPER JAM
where nnn is in the range 361 to 367.
Note 1:Paper may be jammed in both the printer and the
Finisher. For details of clearing a paper jam in the printer, refer to the printer User’s Guide.
Note 2:When a printer paper jam is cleared, recovery printing
will reprint the pages that were jammed. Provided the first page of a set to be stapled is reprinted, stapling will take place: otherwise, the paper will be ejected without stapling.
Note 3:When a Finisher unit paper jam is cleared, the pages that
were jammed will not be automatically reprinted. Remaining pages of a set that was to be stapled will be ejected without stapling.
1. Use the paper jam identifying number on the printer display to locate the paper jam in the Finisher.
Note: The number (in the range 361 to 367 inclusive) identifies
the first position at which paper is jammed. If the paper is
1
