2.2 RS485 / RS422 Wiring Guidelines
• Do not run more than one cable through the strain relief bushing.
• Do not use the cable that connects to the RS485 / RS422 pc board to make other connections.
• Twisted pair shielded cable is recommended.
• The strain relief bushing allows a cable diameter from 2 to 6 mm (0.08 to 0.23 in.).
• The terminal block on the RS485 / RS422 pc board allows a wire size of 0.14 to
1.5 mm
2
(26 to 16 AWG). Strip the wire ends to 6 mm (0.25 inch).

WARNING: ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARDS EXIST WITHIN THE
HOUSING. THE HOUSING SHOULD ONLY BE OPENED BY AUTHORIZED AND QUALIFIED PERSONNEL. REMOVE ALL POWER CONNECTIONS TO THE UNIT BEFORE OPENING. IF THE UNIT CONTAINS AN OPTIONAL RELAY CONTROL BOARD, ADDITIONAL AC OR DC POWER CONNECTIONS MAY STILL EXIST WITHIN THE HOUSING.
Refer to Figure 2.5 when performing these steps.
1. Remove the four screws from the corners of the rear housing.
2. Pull the front housing forward.
3. Remove the plastic hole cover located next to the RS232 connector on the rear
housing.
3. Install the strain relief bushing in the exposed hole.
4. Attach the RS485 / RS422 pc board to the rear housing using the two self
tapping screws supplied.
5. Connect the long cable to connector J1 or J4 on the RS485 / RS422 pc board
and connector J8 on the main pc board. Note: If the Relay option pc board is already installed, do not use the long cable. Connect the short cable between the RS485 / RS422 pc board and the Relay pc board instead.
6. Feed the communication cable through the strain relief bushing and under the
left side of the main pc board.
7. Attach the wires of the communication cable to the terminal block on the RS485
/ RS422 pc board.
8. Position the cable in the slots along the left side of the rear housing.
9. Pull the excess cable through the strain relief bushing and tighten the external
nut on the bushing.
10. Close the housing and reinstall the four screws.

3. OPERATION
Refer to the instruction manual supplied with indicator. Set up the RS485 / RS422 communication and printing parameters as described in the COM2 and PRINT2 menu sections. Send and receive data as described in the SERIAL COMMUNICATION section.
3.1 Use of RS485 Addresses
The RS485 / RS422 interface option allows up to 99 unique addresses. The use of scale addresses above the actual number of network connections allows for simplified swapping of scales on an existing network. Scales may be swapped with no risk of repeated addresses on a network. Multiple network systems could be created with unique scale addresses to give absolute scale identification.
The address may be set to OFF to allow compatibility with RS422 point-to-point or receive only multi-drop systems.
3.2 Sending Commands to the RS485 Interface
Commands sent to the RS485 interface must be preceded by the “@” character and its two digit address set up in the COM2 menu. For example, to send a print command to the RS485 interface that is setup as address 01, the user must send the following sequence: “@01P”.
3.3 Receiving Data from the RS485 Interface
Each response from the RS485 interface is preceded by the @ character and the two digit address. For example, a typical response to “@01P” would be “@01 10.005 kg”.
