12-INCH WOOFER WITH CARBON-FIBER-IMPREGNATED PAPER CONE AND BUTYL-RUBBER SURROUND
The SW300 features a 12-inch long-throw, front-firing woofer with a Carbon-Fiber-Impregnated Paper Cone combined with a Butyl-Rubber Surround for maximum bass response with reduced sonic breakup and lower distortion.
SOPHISTICATED MOTOR ASSEMBLY WITH HIGH BL MAGNET, EXTENDED POLE PIECE, AND CAST ALUMINUM DRIVER BASKET/FRAME
The SW300’s woofer features a sophisticated motor assembly that combines a high BL magnet and extended pole piece for deep bass response and clean bass tones. Moreover, the cast aluminum driver basket/frame provides extra rigidity to the entire assembly for consistent performance over prolonged use.
ADVANCED DIGITAL AMPLIFIER CREATES AMPLE POWER WITH LITTLE HEAT
Powered by an internal 300-watt (rms) advanced digital amplifier, the SW300 can easily reproduce 600-watt peaks with very little heat produced. Niles uses the latest digital technology so bass response will be extremely fast and absolutely accurate, no matter what audio material is being reproduced.
SEPARATE SUBWOOFER LEVEL CONTROLS AND TRIGGER INPUT FOR MOVIES OR MUSIC
Separate subwoofer level controls for music and movies provide the right bass levels for different types of programs. When activated by 12 volts input, the SW300’s MOVIE MODE trigger input will automatically adjust the bass level appropriate for the source material.
RCA LINE-LEVEL AND LOUDSPEAKER-LEVEL INPUTS
In addition to gold-plated RCA line-level inputs, the SW300 features a gold-plated, non-filtered RCA LFE (Low Frequency Effects) line-level input for a direct connection from a 5.1 or 7.1 home theater sound processor. Using the “LFE” input bypasses the “Low Pass” frequency control.
The SW300 also has gold-plated, loudspeaker-level, five-way binding-post input connections. Using this input allows control over the “Low Pass” frequency output of the SW300.
3
Page 4
ADJUSTABLE LOW-PASS, HIGH-PASS, AND PHASE CONTROLS
Variable low-pass and high-pass filters divide the incoming stereo audio spectrum into separate signal paths for the mono subwoofer reproduction and stereo pass-through to a pair of satellite loudspeakers. A fully-adjustable (0-to-180 degree) phase control ensures optimal system integration, no matter where the SW300 is placed in the room.
INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS
RCA CABLE
For the best possible performance using the line-level connections, use high-quality RCA cables that feature low impedance and gold-plated connectors. Consult your local Niles dealer for their recommendations.
MUSIC SENSE CIRCUITRY FOR AUTOMATIC POWER ON/OFF
When activated, the SW300’s music sense circuits will continually monitor the audio inputs and automatically power on the subwoofer when audio signals are detected. Conversely, the music sense circuits will automatically power off the subwoofer, after a preset time, when signals are no longer present. The SW300 also includes a POWER TRIGGER input that allows a 12 volt input to remotely power on/off the SW300 in the same way.
CASCADE AUDIO OUTPUTS FACILITATE EASY CONNECTION OF ADDITIONAL WOOFERS
For larger rooms, or stereo subwoofer applications, several SW300’s can be easily added to a home theater system using the cascading line-level audio outputs to feed additional SW300 audio inputs in a daisy-chain connection.
ATTRACTIVE, YET RIGID, COMPACT CABINET WITH REMOVABLE METAL GRILLE
The SW300 is housed in an attractive, compact, 11-layer no-void, birch-ply, cross-braced black cabinet that provides the ultimate in rigidity and sound clarity. The black perforated-metal grill is removable for those interested in showcasing the technology.
ADJUSTABLE ISOLATING FEET
LOUDSPEAKER WIRE
Use 2-conductor loudspeaker wire when connecting loudspeakers to your receiver or amplifier. For most applications, we recommend using 16- or 18-gauge wire. For wiring runs longer than 80 feet, we recommend 14-gauge wire. The binding post terminals will accommodate up to 12-gauge wire directly. Larger sizes can be accommodated via pin connectors.
When running wire inside walls or ceilings, always use (CL-2 or CL-3) rated cable. In some areas, conduit is also required. For a trouble-free installation, low-voltage wire such as speaker wire must be run in accordance with the National Electrical Code and any applicable provisions of the local building code. If you are unsure of the correct installation techniques, wire jacket, or type of conduit to use, consult a professional audio/video installer, building contractor, or the local building and inspection department.
TECH TIP
Wire size is expressed by its AWG (American Wire Gauge) number – the lower the number, the larger the wire. For example, 12 AWG is physically larger than 14 AWG.
NOTE: THE NILES SW300 POWERED SUBWOOFER IS EXPRESSLY DESIGNED FOR USE IN HOME THEATER AND MUSIC APPLICATIONS. FOR HOME THEATER FRONT- OR CENTER-CHANNEL APPLICATIONS, WE RECOMMEND USING A NILES PHD, HDLCR, OR HDLCRBX LOUDSPEAKER. FOR REAR-CHANNEL APPLICATIONS, WE RECOMMEND USING A NILES HDFX, CM6HDFX, OR DS LOUDSPEAKER.
The SW300 is equipped with four adjustable spike feet (pre-installed with large slip-on rubber covers) that mechanically couple the woofer cabinet to a hard floor. For carpet placement, the rubber covers can be removed to reveal the spikes.
DOLBY® DIGITAL READY
The SW300 is specifically designed for Home Theater Sound. This model exceeds the specifications set forth by Dolby Laboratories for the accurate reproduction of Dolby Digital-Encoded Sources.

SW300 PLACEMENT
CONTROLS AND CONNECTORS
THE BOUNDARY EFFECT
Placing an SW300 in a corner can powerfully affect the way a listener perceives bass response. Known as the boundary effect, a placement close to a wall/ceiling boundary or near a corner-wall boundary will emphasize certain bass frequencies, while canceling others. This effect can make the SW300 sound excessively boomy and inaccurate to some listeners, while to others it just seems like more bass sound. Some listeners prefer to place the subwoofer (or subwoofers) near the same location of the main left/right channel loudspeakers.
Because all rooms are unique, and people have different expectations with regard to audio quality, some experimentation may be necessary with regard to placement and control settings.
OPERATION CONTROLS
The SW300’s operation controls are located on the unit’s front panel, as shown in Figure 1. They function as follows:
1
2
Figure 1. The SW300’s front panel contains the subwoofer’s operation controls.
1. HIGH PASS Frequency and ON/OFF Controls: Use the HIGH PASS control to set the high-pass crossover frequency from 60 to 160 Hz (according to your loudspeaker manufacturer’s recommendation) to drive a satellite loudspeaker system via a separate audio amplifier, from the line-level AUDIO OUT jacks (also see Figure 2 on page 8.) To activate the HIGH PASS filter, set the ON/OFF switch to ON. In the OFF position the filter is deactivated and full range audio is sent to the satellite amplifier.
2. MUSIC/MOVIE LEVEL and SETUP Controls: While listening to music, move SETUP to MUSIC and adjust the MUSIC LEVEL control to set a desired bass level. Similarly, while listening to a movie, move set a desired bass level. Each level control includes an accompanying LED indicator to identify which one is currently active as triggered by your home theater sound processor or receiver (see Figure 2 on page 8). FINISHING THE INSTALLATION
ADJUSTING THE FEET
The SW300 is equipped with four adjustable spike feet, pre-installed with large, slip-on rubber covers. At the final placement site, adjust the feet/spikes as follows:
• On hard floors (e.g., wood, tile, etc.), check the SW300’s stability and, if needed, adjust the rubber feet one at a time until the cabinet is level.
• On carpeted floors, tilt the SW300 up and remove each rubber cover. Check the SW300’s stability and, if needed, adjust the spikes one at a time until the cabinet is level.
CONNECTING THE SW300
Connect the SW300 according to your application (see APPLICATIONS on page 10). Use highquality RCA cables for all line-level connections (see CONTROLS AND CONNECTORS on page 7). For applications with loudspeaker-level connections, perform the following steps:
SETTING UP THE SW300
After making all the connections and calibrating the loudspeakers, set up the SW300 by performing the following steps (see CONTROLS AND CONNECTORS on page 7 for information on control operation):
1. On the rear panel, set the (Master) POWER switch to ON. Depending on your application, set the (Auto)
2. On the front panel, set the following controls (and switches) to their initial positions:

1. At each SW300 loudspeaker-level connection, separate the loudspeaker wire so that at least 2 inches of each conductor are free. Strip away 1/4 inch of insulation from each loudspeaker wire. Using correct polarity, connect the appropriate conductor to each five-way, speaker level, input binding post.
NOTE: OBSERVE CORRECT POLARITY: POSITIVE (+) GOES TO THE RED POST AND NEGATIVE
(–) GOES TO THE BLACK POST. IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF WIRE POLARITY, SEE THE SECTION, CHECKING PHASE ON THE SATELLITE LOUDSPEAKERS, ON PAGE 16.
2. Connect the other end of the loudspeaker wires to the home theater receiver (or
amplifier) and satellite loudspeakers in the same way.
3. Using the five-way binding post of the SW300, connect the loudspeaker outputs to the
appropriate satellite loudspeaker in the same way.
4. Turn on the home theater receiver and calibrate all loudspeakers in the system according to the receiver (processor) manufacturer’s instructions.

3. While playing a favorite music track, adjust your system’s volume control to a comfortable level and listen to the bass level at your favorite listening position (e.g., couch). Next, move the switch to MOVIE and play a favorite movie chapter. Listen to the bass level, and, if desired, adjust the MOVIE LEVEL control to change the movie bass level to taste.
4. Move the desired, adjust the
5. Continue listening to your favorite music and movie sources using the appropriate setting for LEVEL SETUP. If you want a more solid-sounding bass (with less overtones), try moving the LOW PASS FREQUENCY control toward the lower frequencies. Experiment with different frequency settings until you find one that sounds best. If needed, readjust the MOVIE LEVEL and MUSIC LEVEL controls (see steps 3 and 4 above).
6. Continue listening to your favorite music and movie sources using the appropriate setting for LEVEL SETUP. Try experimenting with the PHASE control until you find its optimum setting. Depending on the SW300 placement, the bass should sound more pronounced when the phase has been optimized.

CHECKING PHASE ON THE SATELLITE LOUDSPEAKERS
INSTALLING AND REMOVING THE GRILLE
Loudspeaker wire has two conductors. On applications with satellite loudspeakers, one conductor is attached to a component’s negative (–) terminal, while the other is attached to a component’s positive (+) terminal. Usually, the wire is marked for your convenience, but the marking can be done in the following different ways:
• Stripe on one wire
• Ribbed area you can feel on one conductor
• Different colors of metal wire on each conductor
• Fabric strand or string wound into one of the conductors
Of course, there are some wires that appear completely identical. If wired incorrectly, one satellite loudspeaker will be playing “out-of-phase” with the other loudspeaker. A pair of out-of-phase loudspeakers works against each other, and the sound of the two playing together will be lacking in bass and sound “phasey.” If you suspect the sound is not right, and you cannot see any markings on the wire, try this simple test:
1. Stand halfway between the satellite loudspeakers.
2. Play some music with the amplifier or receiver set to Mono.
3. Listen to the richness of the bass and the loudness of the sound.
4. Turn off the amplifier and reverse the connections on the SW300 SPEAKER OUT binding post.
• To install the grille, start with the top two grille posts and gently press the grille frame in at each of the four recessed holes. When properly installed, the grille will be
approximately 2 to 3 mm away from the cabinet along the sides.
• To remove the grille, start with the bottom two grille posts and gently pull the grille frame away from the SW300’s edge at each of the four recessed holes. Store the grille in a safe place for future use.
CLEANING
Use a dampened soft cloth or paper towel to clean the cabinet and grille.
5. Repeat the listening test with the same volume control setting. When the sound has a richer bass and is slightly louder, the satellite loudspeakers are working together or “in-phase.”
