Through out the 1970s and 1980s, developm ent continued
with an emphasis on materials technology. As polymer chemistry adv anced, more advan ced materials and comp osites became
available. Experiments on these materials yielded signifi cant
advances in acoustic engineering; the lighter, stronger materials
more able to track smal l signal changes.
Into the 1990s, M ission bec ame a force to be re ckoned with. T he

quality audio around the world. As sales grew, investment in

2001, the ‘Pilastr o’ was launched.
Pilastro was the culmination of all those years’ knowledge.
Engineered without compromise, it represents an ideal in
loudspe aker develop ment – a stateme nt product t hat is, withou t

Many of the acoustic advances achieved
through the Pilastro project have since been
implemented in our newer loudspeaker
ranges . The new E- series l oudspe akers all s hare the se crets o f drive
unit technology and cabinet construction from their illustrious
predecessor and likewise, the M-series loudspeakers and even
the new 790 series all owe a great deal to the research that was
undertaken for that project.
Through an engineering-led approach to product development,
Mission remains today a standard by which other loudspeaker
companies are measured. With huge investment and with group
resources that include the ability to manufacture every single
component of every product, you can be sure that Mission will
continue to defi ne loudspeaker reproduction standards.

Features include a unique ‘ring-dome’

Cabinet construction is equally impressive. A new material, ’Granitech’, has been employed for the fi rst time in a

Equilibrium balanced bass drivers
TFCT (Transverse folded cabinet technology)
For our loud spea kers we u se t wo u-s hap ed se cti ons b onde d
into each other to form a box, creating a structure that is much
stronger and more rigid than alternative methods.
The U- coupled fr ont and rear baf fl e greatly reduces ca binet
vibration and hence colouration.
Keraform (Ceramic matrix cone)
‘Keraform’ ceramix matrix drivers are a Mission fi rst. Unlike the
so-called ‘ceramic-hardening’ applied to aluminium cones,
‘Keraform’ is a true ceramic material impregnated into a
fi bre matrix and then oven cured. Having a greater stiffness to
mass ratio than any previous drive unit material, performance
parameters for midrange performance, transient attack and
detail re solution are exce ptional, and se t new standards i n
their class.
Paramid
Mission’s ‘Paramid’ driver is formed using a sandwich
structure. Aramid polymer fi bres with incredible tensile
strength are sandwiched between two stiffer pulp layers. This creates a cone which is very light and stiff, yet has
superb internal damping. The internal damping drastically reduces cone-induced distortion by absorbing the
transverse waves that travel through a cone following
an impulse.
Viotex
Viotex is an extremely fi ne weave material which is both
incredibly light and, when woven into a matrix and
impregnated, is also very strong. Capable of moving at incredibl y high speeds with m inimal inertia , Viotex not only
Hemp fi bre cone
For the fl agship Pilastro project, Mission have developed a
new generation of hemp driver. Hemp is a natural fi bre with
higher tensile strength than steel, yet superb internal damping
characte ristics. Co mpletely li near and pistonic, even wit h f a st
transien ts, it is relaxed and natural in p resentat ion.
By controllin g cone reson ances with a double roll-surround,
each musical note starts and stops precisely with no overhang
or blurr ing of the mus ical mess age - a natur al materia l for a
natural sound that brings an uncanny realism to vocals
and instruments.
Symmetrical driver array
A symmetrical confi guration of drivers is used to improve
dispersion and to improve imaging. P lac ed equidi stant abov e
and below the high-frequency driver, mid-range and bass
drivers create an even horizontal dispersion and a controlled
dispers ion on the vertical plane.
Having the tr eble unit ce nt rally pla ced enhance s the imaging
by mimicki ng a p o i nt-s ou rce d is p er s io n . In terferen ce p ate rn s
when a stereo pair of speakers are used create an almost
holographic sense of presence with the listener able to
discern the exact location of instruments and voices
within the sound stage.
Ring dome treble unit
Mission’s exclusive ‘ring dome’ treble unit uses a woven textile
material formed in a double ring arrangement. The combination of textile dome and multi-ring surround applies optimum
stiff ness to th e maxi mum rad iating a rea. T he dome a nd ring
have a double suspension with the voice-coil attached at the
junction between them.
The voice -coil se es minimum mas s, yet the rad iating area is
large for gr e ate r effi cienc y. The result is high sensitivity and a
Decoupling bass vibrations from a cabinet has for many
years bee n a core objec tive of loud speaker desi gn. Such vi brations c an caus e driver i ntermo dulati on as well a s cabin et
resonance.
As part of the Pilastro project Mission has developed a
new syste m where side moun ted bass drivers a re arranged
directly opposite each other – each one connected to
its counterpart using a force pipe. In this way, opposing
vibrati ons generated by the dri v ers are self cancell ing.
The result is that all the drive unit energy is concentrated on
moving the co ne. Transient att ack is sensatio nal and rhyt hmic timin g is pre cise . Cabi net co lou rati on an d reso nanc e are
entirely eliminated leaving only the drivers as providers of
acoustic output.
IDG (Inverted Driver Geometry)
Mission has pioneered the use of inverted driver
geomet ry. By pla cing the t reble un it belo w the bass or m idrange driver, the length of path is equalised so the waves
coincide at t he lis ten er ’s head -h eig ht. T his p rin cipl e is k nown
as ‘time-alignment’.
Granitech cabinet construction
Formulated to provide the best combination of rigidity,
damping and acoustic isolation, ‘Granitech’ is a stone-like
material with a granulated structure that breaks up soundwave energy a nd provide s an ultra-quiet structure.
Audiophile grade crossover
Mission use advanced computer modelling to produce an
optimum re sponse and mi nimum phase shi ft through e ach
crossover point. This is then refi ned th rou gh c rit ica l lis te nin g
tests and panel eval uation to produce an ideal perf ormance.
Our audiophile cros sovers incl ude components to reduce the
HQ

effe cts of driver im pedance peak s which would oth erwise
cause unwa n t ed phase shifts th rough the cr ossover region.
Crossover components are chosen for their specifi c a udio
qualities, mounted on custom designed PCBs for minimum
interaction and mounted using soft resin to dampen any
mechanical interference.
Side facing driver
On large fl oorstanding loudspeakers, it is often desirable to
use a sidew ays f a c in g d r iv er. In sm a ll r o o ms , t he s e s ho u l d b e
positio ned facing i nwards to create a ta ut, controll ed bass,
free of ro om gain and boom . In larger rooms th ey can be
switched to face outwards, improving presence and extending the low er frequency response.
Heatsink cooled treble unit
Maintaining a low temperature in a treble unit is essential for
a consistent performance, especially at high volume levels.
Heat is gene rated by current wi thin the voice- coil and this
needs to be controlled to avoid compression and even damage to the unit.
Mission’s new heatsink coupled treble units conduct heat
away from the treble unit very effectively, keeping control
and maintaining a consistently high standard of dynamic
performance.
Viscous laminated treble unit
The viscous laminated high frequency dome treble unit offers
exceptionally smooth high-frequency performance with a
superior off-axis response. The ferro-fl uid cooled voice -coil
design is opt imis ed to p rovi de min ima l comp ressi on at h igh
volume leve l s with an ultra-fast t ransient response.
Tri-wire terminals
Tri-wire termi nals a re use d to allo w the ba ss, mi d- ran ge and
high frequency sections of a loudspeaker to be wired independently as with bi-wiring. It is also possible to join ei-
ther the ba ss and mi d, or th e mid an d treb le and b i-w ire the
speakers. (see bi-wirin g)
Magnetically shielded
All our magnetically shielded loudspeakers are ideal for
use in close proximity to all television sets or wherever
magnetic interference is an issue.
Direct Coupled Crossover
The objective of any internal loudspeaker design is to
transmit as m uch of t he mus ic as p ossib le to th e dri vers w ith
the fewest possible components in the way, degrading the
signal. By mounting the crossover section directly to the
rear loudsp eaker ter minals, t he signal p ath is shor tene d and
number of internal connections reduced.

D2IS (Damped driver isolation system)
The unique D2IS system is designed to reduce the effect of
front baffl e vibr ations on t he h.f. uni t’s out put. A lo w profi le
neodymium magnet enables the treble unit housing to be fully contain ed within t he front b affl e, mounted in a resiliently
damped, compliant cradle. This increases the internal volume
available to the bass unit and, by effectively decoupling the
treble and bass units, eliminates virtually all unwanted
mechanic al interac tion bet ween them. T he improveme nt in
clarit y an d de fi nit io n, p ar t ic ula rl y th rou gh t he v it al cr oss over
region is considerable.
Kapton voice-coil former
Kapton is a p olyimide fi lm with both excellent electrical insulation and thermal dissipation properties. Both qualities
are essenti al fo r deve lo pi ng a l ou dsp eake r tha t can p lay w ith
minimal distorti on at loude r volume settings.
Gold-plated connections
Gold has b oth excep tional e lec tric al condu ctiv ity a nd is also
relatively malleable. When used for electrical connections, it
creates a larger contact area and a lower resis tance – idea l for
preserving the optimum signal qual ity.
Bi-wire terminals
Bi-wire terminals are used to allow the bass and high frequency s ections o f a l o u d speaker to be wi r e d i n d e p e n d e nt l y.
All bi-wireable loudspeakers are supplied with ‘bridging’
clips, so that a single wire can be used if desired.
Although the maximum benefi t of bi-wiring is achieved
through us ing two s ets of a mplifi ers wi th dif feren t channe ls
driving t he ba ss an d treb le f re que nci es, t her e are s til l sign ifi cant acoustic advantages to running two sets of cable (or a
specialist bi-wire cable) from a single set of amplifi er outputs.
When bi-amping (using two stereo amplifi ers) with bi-wire
speakers , it is reco mmen ded fo r each amp lifi er to be driving
a bass and treble unit of one speaker, rather than having one
amplifi er driving both treble units and the other both
bass units.
High grade OFC (Oxygen free copper)
Copper is an excellent electrical conductor; however, oxygen
impurities within the crystalline structure can adversely affect that conductivit y. By refi ni n g t h e co pper to a much higher grade of p urity, electr ical conductiv ity can be improve d
and hence signal quality.

Bi-pole dispersion
A ‘bi-polar’ dispersion is ideal for surround channels in a
multi- channel syste m. With all driver s fi ring in-phase, they
produce a 180 degree he m is p he r e o f s o u nd w i t h no n e o f t h e

‘bi-polar’ loudspeakers produce a direct sensation of the
surroun d ef fect , but al so a supe rb sens e of atmo spher e and

Ferrofl uid cooling
Treble voice-coils are fi ne wires and tend to get very hot
when used for a long time, or at high volumes. This can cause
distortion and compression if the excess heat cannot
be removed. Ferrofl uids are used in treble drive units to sink
heat bet w e e n th e vo i ce-coi l a nd t h e m a gn e t a ss e m b l y. Th ey

Neodymium magnets (NdFeB) are one of a class known
as ‘rare ear th’ magnets . They are also so metimes kn own as
‘super magnets’ because of their unbelievable strength and
