Operating Instructions
Dear Customer,
Thank you for the trust you have placed in us by buying a Metabo power tool. Each Metabo power tool
is carefully tested and subject to strict quality controls by Metabo's quality assurance. Nevertheless, the
service life of a power tool depends to a great extent on you. Please observe the information contained
in these instructions and the enclosed documentation. The more carefully you treat your Metabo power
tool, the longer it will provide dependable service.

The machine is suitable for cutting hedges and
bushes.
The user bears sole responsibility for damage
caused by improper use.
Generally accepted accident prevention regulations and the enclosed safety information must be
observed.
2General Safety Instructions
WARNING!

should always be followed to reduce the risk of
fire, electric shock, and personal injury, including
the following:
a) FOR ALL DOUBLE-INSULATED HEDGE
TRIMMERS
1) Replacement Parts
When servicing use only identical replacement
parts.
2) Polarized Appliance Connections
To reduce the risk of electric shock, this appliance
has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the
other) and will require the use of a polarized
extension cord. The appliance plug will fit into a

1) Avoid Dangerous Environment – Don’t use
hedge trimmers in damp or wet locations.
2) Don’t Use In Rain.
3) Keep Children Away – All visitors should be kept
at a distance from work area.
4) Dress Properly – Do not wear loose clothing or
jewelry. They can be caught in moving parts. Use
of rubber gloves and substantial footwear is
recommended when working outdoors. Wear
protective hair covering to contain long hair.
5) Use Safety Glasses – Always use face or dust
mask if operation is dusty.
6) Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)
protection should be provided on the circuit(s) or
outlet(s) to be used for the hedge trimmer.
Receptacles are available having built-in GFCI
protection and may be used for this measure of
safety.
7) Use Right Appliance – Do not use appliance for
any job except that for which it is intended.
8) Warning – To reduce the risk of electric shock,
use only with an extension cord intended for
outdoor use,such as SW-A, SOW-A, STW-A,
STOW-A, SJW-A, SJOW-A, SJTW-A or SJTOW-A.
Exception: Types SOW, STW, SJOW, SJTW,
STOW, or SJTO Ware alternative designations to
Types SOW-ASTW-A, SJOW-A, SJTW-A, STOWA or SJTOW-A, respectfully.
9) Extension Cord – Make sure your extension cord
is in good condition. When using an extension
cord, be sure to use one heavy enough to carry the
current your product will draw. An undersized
extension cord will cause a drop in line voltage
resulting in loss of power and overheating.
Figure 1 shows the correct size to use depending
on cord length and name plate ampere rating. If in
doubt, use the next heavier gage. The smaller the
gage number, the heavier the cord. To reduce the

risk of disconnection of hedge trimmer cord from
the extension cord during operating:
i) Make a knot as shown in Figure 2 or
ii) Use one of the plug-receptacle retaining straps
or connectors described in this manual.

17) Store Idle Hedge Trimmer Indoors – When not
in use, hedge trimmer should be stored indoors in
dry, and high or locked-up place – out of reach of
children.
18) Maintain Hedge Trimmer With Care – Keep
cutting edge sharp and clean for best performance
and to reduce the risk of injury. Follow instructions
for lubricating and changing accessories. Inspect
hedge trimmer cord periodically, and if damaged,
have it repaired by an authorized service facility.
Inspect extension cords periodically and replace if
damaged. Keep handles dry, clean, and free from
oil and grease.
19) Check Damaged Parts – Before further use of
the hedge trimmer, a guard or other part that is
damaged should be care fully checked to
determine that it will operate properly and perform
its intended function. Check for alignment of
moving parts, binding of moving parts, breakage
of parts, mounting, and any other condition that
may affect its operation. A guard or other part that
is damaged should be properly repaired or
replaced by an authorized service center unless
indicated else where in this manual.

The trimmer shall not be used to cut stems

is on.
Do not attempt to remove cut material nor hold
material to be cut when blades are moving. Make
sure trimmer switch is off when clearing jammed
material from blades. Do not grasp the exposed
cutting blades or cutting edges when picking up or
holding the hedge trimmer. Caution – blades coast
after turn off.
13) Don’t Force Hedge Trimmer – It will do the job
better and with less likelihood of a risk of injury at
the rate for which it was designed.
14) Don’t Over reach – Keep proper footing and
balance at all times.
15) Stay Alert – Watch what you are doing. Use
common sense. Do not operate hedge trimmer
when you are tired.
16) Disconnect Hedge Trimmer – Disconnect the
hedge trimmer from the power supply when not in

Pull the plug out of the plug socket before any
adjustments, conversions or servicing are
performed.
The electrical system to which the hedge trimmer
is connected should be equipped with a differential current safety switch (with a max. of 30 mA
release current).
Remove the plug from the

The machine is provided with a "Quick stop" function. Have the machine repaired if braking time is
clearly lengthened.

Always hold the machine with both hands and

Plugs and couplings of extension cables must be
splash-proof.
Only use extension cables that are also approved
for outdoors.
Prior to starting work, check the mains connection
cable and extension cable for damage. Only use
mains connection cables and extension cables in
perfect condition.
Position the extension cable such that it cannot be
caught by the cutting blades (e.g. sling over your
shoulder).
Examine the area to be cut and remove wire or
other foreign bodies.
If the cutting blades come to a standstill due to a
particularly hard branch or foreign body (wire in a
hedge) and the stoppage cannot be corrected by
pulling the hedge trimmer back, the motor must
first be switched off and the plug removed from the
socket before the cause of the blockage can be
removed manually from the cutting blade.
For other activities (e.g. removing twigs or
cuttings), deposit the machine outside the working
area.
Lay the machine down such that persons are not
at risk.
When you have laid the hedge trimmer down, pull
the plug from the socket.
For storage and transportation, always slide the
enclosure onto the cutting blades. (It has been slid
on correctly if the Metabo lettering faces upwards).
Only carry the machine by the bow-type handle.

To switch off:
Release one of the two actuated switches.
Thanks to the patented Quick stop, the cutting
blades come to a standstill within 0.05 seconds.
Have the machine repaired if braking time is
clearly lengthened.
The noise that sometimes occurs during a
machine Quick stop is design-related and has no
influence on operation and service life.
7.2Cleaning the cutting blade
(after every use)
Before cleaning:
Switch the machine off.
Pull the mains plug out of the socket.
Wear protective gloves.
Remove contamination, remains of blades etc.
(e.g. with a brush or cloth)
After cleaning:

frequency, as stated on the rating label,
match with your power supply.
To prevent the hedge trimmer plug from inadvertently being pulled out of the coupling socket of the
extension cable, attached the extension cable to
the cable strain relief device as shown (9) (Figure
on page 3).
Note: the cable tension device is designed to hold
approved extension cables that are used most
frequently for external applications.
For other approved extension cables that are also
used outside, we recommend using the cable
tension strap, order no. 6.31070 (see Accessories
section).
Check Quick stop:
Switch machine on briefly and then off again. Have
the machine repaired if braking time is clearly
lengthened.

8Tips and Tricks
To prevent the extension cable from slipping
between the cutting blades, it is advisable to start
cutting a hedge near the socket (cable drum etc.)
and then pull the cable along behind you as you
work.
Ensure that there are no birds brooding in your
hedge. If necessary, postpone your hedgecutting.
The chopped-up cuttings, combined with other
garden waste products, provide nutrient-rich
compost.
Unchopped cuttings placed in a natural garden
provide a useful place of retreat for small animals
such as hedgehogs.
Observe any local resting periods; your neighbour
will thank you for it.

9Maintenance
It is advisable to have blunt cutting blades sharpened in a specialist workshop. Check cutting
blades regularly for damage and have them
repaired in a specialist workshop immediately if
necessary.

Use only genuine Metabo accessories.
If you need any accessories, check with your
dealer.
For dealers to select the correct accessory, they
need to know the exact model designation of your
power tool.

11 Repairs
Repairs to electrical tools must be carried out by
qualified electricians ONLY!
Any Metabo power tool in need of repair can be
sent to one of the addresses listed in the spare
parts list.
Please enclose a description of the fault with the
power tool.
12 Environmental Protection
Metabo's packaging can be 100% recycled.
Scrap power tools and accessories contain large
amounts of valuable resources and plastics that
can be recycled.
These instructions are printed on chlorine-free
bleached paper.
