1
Retractable antenna
When the handset is removed from the base unit, this antenna must
be fully extended so that you can receive all incoming calls and have
clear, strong reception.
2
Power cord with ac adapter
To power the base unit, plug the power cord into a grounded, 3-prong
ac outlet that is not controlled by a switch.
iss1, cib3126-2
Handset Hook
3
When the cordless voice terminal is wall mounted, the handset hook
allows the handset to be securely placed into the base unit.
Directory Card
4
The directory card is provided so that you can write the Intercom
(ICOM) Number/Personal Dialing Code (PDC) assigned to the cordless voice terminal and the ICOM No./PDC and names of other people on the system. When you have more than one MLC-5 Cordless
Voice Terminal in an area, it is especially important to write the ICOM
No./PDC assigned to each of them to help ensure that the proper
handsets are always placed into their correct base units.
Battery Contacts
5
Batteries begin recharging when the battery contacts on the handset
touch the contacts on the base unit. Periodic cleaning of the contacts using a soft eraser may be necessary.
6
Channel Indicator
The channel indicator lights to identify which channel is currently
being used or being programmed. A “P” is displayed when the cordless voice terminal is in programming mode.
Mode
7
There are three modes of operation:
The Charge light comes on whenever the handset is properly
>
placed in the base unit and indicates that the batteries are being
recharged.
The Talk light comes on whenever the handset is removed from
>
the base unit and is turned on with the On/Off button.
The Program light comes on when the T/P switch is set to P for
>
programming mode.
T/P Switch
8
The T/P switch is used to test the voice terminal and to program
channels and features.
9
Ringer Vol
The ringer volume switch adjusts the volume of the base unit ringer.
Slide it to the right (increases loudness) or to the left (decreases
loudness) to adjust the level. The handset ringer volume cannot be
changed.

1
Antennas
Two antennas are provided with the handset: a retractable antenna
and a flexible antenna.
WARNING: Never operate the handset outside during an electrical
storm.
Retractable Antenna (factory installed)
>
Whenever the handset is removed from the base unit, this
antenna should be fully extended to receive calls and for clear
reception.

>
Flexible Antenna (packaged separately)
This antenna can replace the retractable antenna so that the
handset is easier to carry when placed in the carrying adapter.
2
On/Off
The light next to this button must be on when you answer or make a
call. Two beeps sound if the handset is out of range and must be
moved closer to the base unit.
Message
3
When the light is on next to this button, there is a message for you.
The light blinks after 20 seconds to conserve battery power.
4
Lo Batt
This light blinks and a tone sounds when the batteries have fewer
than 15 minutes of use remaining.
5
Line Card Label
The line card label next to the blank buttons can be marked with a
ballpoint pen, not a pencil, to indicate which features or lines are
assigned to the corresponding button. If you need to make corrections or updates, you can erase the label, but do not remove it.
Line/Feature Buttons
6
For MERLIN Systems, of these five programmable buttons, four are
initially reserved for outside lines and one, located to the left of
On/Off, is an intercom line. Any of the four outside line buttons can
be programmed with MERLIN System features.
For System 25, of the five programmable buttons, the last two on the
bottom row are System Access buttons reserved for making and
receiving calls. Any of the three remaining buttons can be programmed with System 25 features.
7
Status
In order to conserve battery power, the lights on the handset (except
On/Off) go off in 20 seconds. When this button is pressed the indicator lights relight to reflect the current status of calls and features. If
the handset is out of range when Status is pressed, you hear two
short beeps that indicate the handset must be moved closer to the
base unit.
Trans

Channel
During normal operation, press this button to change channels for
clearer reception. In cases of strong interference, you may have to
move closer to the base unit in order to change channels. If the
handset is out of range, two short beeps sound to indicate that the
handset must be moved closer to the base unit.
When the cordless voice terminal is in programming mode, press this
button to program channel selection.
12
Number Card
This card should be removed, labeled with the ICOM No./PDC
assigned to the cordless voice terminal, then replaced. This is especially important when you have more than one cordless voice terminal in an area to ensure that the handset is always placed into the
correct base unit.
13
Battery Contacts
Batteries begin recharging when the battery contacts on the handset
touch the contacts on the base unit. Periodic cleaning of the contacts
using a soft eraser may be necessary.
Installation
The base unit for the cordless voice terminal may be placed on a desk or
table top or mounted on a wall not made of metal. Instructions for each
installation follow.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Before you install the cordless voice terminal, there are certain considerations regarding its location and use:
The base unit must be installed at least 20 feet away from the control
●
unit for optimum range.
●
The base unit should not share the same power line or be within 6
feet of electromagnetic equipment such as electric motors, or equipment with microprocessors such as answering machines, personal
computers, and FAX machines.
●
Never operate the handset outside during an electrical storm.
If there are other people using cordless voice terminals in the area,
●
they cannot share the same channels. Follow the instructions for
“Programming Channels” to assign different channels to each voice
terminal.
iss1, cib3126-6
If more than one cordless voice terminal is being used, do not place a
●
handset from one cordless voice terminal into the base unit of
another. If this accidentally occurs place the proper handset in its
corresponding base unit for at least 10 seconds.
●
The range of your cordless voice terminal may be reduced when
operating the handset around metal walls.
●
There is no visual indication on the handset when a call is being
bridged. If you need to ensure privacy on a line, program the
Privacy/Exclusion feature onto one of the line/feature buttons on the
handset, then activate it during the call. See “Using the Feature Buttons” for details.
Completing the Cards
A Number Card and Line Card are provided with the handset. A Directory Card is provided with both the base unit and the carrying adapter.
Each card should be properly completed as described below:
Number Card

on the number card on the handset. Follow these steps:
1
Insert a paperclip into the U-shaped hole at the right side of the plastic window.
Slide the window to the left until the right side pops up. If necessary,
2
flex the plastic window to remove it.
Write the ICOM No./PDC assigned to the cordless voice terminal on
3
the card.
4
Replace the card and window by sliding them under the left edge of
the number plate hole and then to the right until they snap in place.
Line Card
This label is used to identify outside lines and features assigned to the
corresponding buttons. This label cannot be removed. Follow these
steps:
Lift the handset.
1
With a ballpoint pen, not a pencil, write the line numbers for all
2
incoming lines on the label.
MERLIN System users: Write “ICOM” on the label for the intercom
button (located to the left of On/Off).
If you want to reserve any of the blank buttons for features, leave the
3
labels blank until you complete the installation procedure.
