Battery Contacts
Batteries begin recharging when the battery contacts on the handset touch the contacts on the base unit. Periodic cleaning of the contacts using a soft eraser may be necessary.

Installation

The base unit for the cordless voice terminal may be placed on a desk or table top or mounted on a wall not made of metal. Instructions for each
installation follow.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Before you install the cordless voice terminal, there are certain considerations regarding its location and use:
The base unit must be installed at least 20 feet away from the control
unit for optimum range.
The base unit should not share the same power line or be within 6 feet of electromagnetic equipment such as electric motors, or equipment with microprocessors such as answering machines, personal computers, and FAX machines.
Never operate the handset outside during an electrical storm. If there are other people using cordless voice terminals in the area,
they cannot share the same channels. Follow the instructions for “Programming Channels” to assign different channels to each voice terminal.
iss1, cib3126-6
Page 8
If more than one cordless voice terminal is being used, do not place a
handset from one cordless voice terminal into the base unit of another. If this accidentally occurs place the proper handset in its
corresponding base unit for at least 10 seconds.
The range of your cordless voice terminal may be reduced when operating the handset around metal walls.
There is no visual indication on the handset when a call is being bridged. If you need to ensure privacy on a line, program the Privacy/Exclusion feature onto one of the line/feature buttons on the handset, then activate it during the call. See “Using the Feature Buttons” for details.

Completing the Cards

A Number Card and Line Card are provided with the handset. A Directory Card is provided with both the base unit and the carrying adapter. Each card should be properly completed as described below:

Using the Feature Buttons

This section describes how you can program features on the programmable buttons on the handset.

Considerations for Programming MERLIN System Features

Voice Announcements do not work with the cordless voice terminal
and must be disabled. Otherwise if an intercom caller attempts to make a voice announcement to the cordless voice terminal, he or she hears a tone that sounds as though the voice announcement has been accepted when in fact it has not.
The cordless voice terminal cannot be assigned to a paging group.
Since the cordless voice terminal does not have a speakerphone or a
display and cannot be used as the attendant or alternate attendant console, it is not compatible with features requiring those conditions.
Since the cordless voice terminal does not have dual light buttons to show programming status, the following features should be used with caution:
Call Forwarding
>
Personalized Ringing
>
Ringing Options
>
iss1, cib3126-22
Page 24
If any of your incoming lines has the call waiting feature, program a
Recall button (#50) on one of the programmable buttons and press it before you pick up a waiting call. If you press On/Off instead, you’ll disconnect the call.
For MERLIN II System users, if you program an Auto Intercom button, idle line preference must be set to intercom.

PROGRAMMING MERLIN SYSTEM FEATURES

You can program the cordless voice terminal one of two ways:
Using the Administrator’s Console
You or the system administrator can program features from the administrator’s console by using Centralized Programming. Refer to “Centralized Programming” in your MERLIN System documentation for details.
Select the features you want to program.
1
Lift the cordless handset from the base unit.
2
Using a ballpoint pen, not a pencil, label the line card as follows:
3
NOTE: If you make a mistake or need to update the line card, erase the label, but do not remove it.
Write “ICOM” on the label for the button reserved for intercom
>
calls (located to the left of On/Off). Write the line number on the label of each button that is
>
reserved for outside calls. Label the feature buttons using the abbreviations for the
>
features you’re programming on the corresponding buttons.
Refer to your MERLIN System documentation to perform the pro-
4
gramming procedures for each feature you’ve selected. See “Considerations for Programming MERLIN System Features” above.
Using the Handset
You can program features onto the programmable buttons on the handset using the cordless voice terminal, but you will not see visual confirmation with the associated lights, as you would if you used Centralized Programming.
1
Select the features you want to program. Enter programming mode by sliding the T/P switch on the base
2
unit to P.
Channel indicator displays a “P” for programming mode.
iss1, cib3126-23
Page 25
3
Use a ballpoint pen, not a pencil, to write the name of the feature on the corresponding button label. The button to the left of On/Off is the intercom line and must be labeled “ICOM.”
4
With the handset held close to the base unit, enter the code for the feature you are programming. See “Considerations for Programming MERLIN System Features” above.
5
Press the button you want the feature programmed on.
6
Continue programming or leave programming mode by sliding the T/P switch to the center ( Ž ) position.

PROGRAMMING SYSTEM 25 FEATURES

The cordless voice terminal must be administered as a 10-Button voice
terminal (set 304) and not as a 5-Button voice terminal (set 302) since
the 5-Button voice terminals do not support the message waiting capabil-
ity, but the cordless voice terminal does.

Considerations for Programming System 25 Features

Since the cordless voice terminal does not have a speakerphone or a display, and it cannot be used as the attendant console, it is not compatible with features requiring those conditions.
If Send All Calls is programmed, select the single ring reminder since there is no visual indication (unless Status is pressed) when this feature is activated.
The five programmable buttons on the cordless voice terminal corresponds to buttons 7 through 11 on a regular 10-button voice terminal. See Figure 11.
