Safety Recall Campaign – Drivers Side Airbag - 1522L

BACKGROUND
This Lexus Service Letter is further to Dealer facsimile dated 2nd January 2002 on this subject.
As previously advised, investigations by Toyota Motor Corporation have determined that a requirement exists for the initiation of a safety related recall campaign on 94 Lexus ES300 vehicles. This recall is to be conducted in accordance with the FCAI Code of Practice for Safety Related Recalls.
DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM
On these Lexus ES300 vehicles, it is possible that during airbag deployment, the bottom seam of the driver’s side airbag module cover (i.e. the horn pad) may be torn away, allowing the cover to completely detach from the airbag module. If this occurs, there is a possibility that the detached cover may strike the driver and may cause personal injury.
INVOLVED VEHICLES
Lexus ES300 (MCV30) vehicles produced between the 30th July 2001 and 25th October 2001 (refer VIN range on the following page) are being recalled. As stated above a total number of 94 vehicles are involved.
Note: Although the affected vehicles are within the above identification range, not all vehicles in this range are involved.
TIMING / OWNER NOTIFICATION
Lexus contacted all owners of involved vehicles by telephone and letter on 8th of January 2002 advising them of the need for this campaign.

Sample Customer Letter
Dear Lexus Owner, Thank you for having purchased your new Lexus ES300. Lexus is dedicated to providing vehicles of outstanding quality and value. As part of our
constant efforts to provide the best in customer satisfaction, we have decided to introduce a Safety Recall Campaign involving your vehicle.
On certain Lexus ES300s, it is possible that during airbag deployment, the bottom seam of the drivers side airbag module cover which retains the cover on the module (horn pad) after deployment may be torn away, allowing the cover to completely detach from the air bag module. If this occurs, there is a possibility that the detached cover may strike the driver and may cause personal injury.
Our records indicate that your vehicle was manufactured within the production range of suspect airbags, and accordingly, Lexus would like to replace the drivers side airbag with a new level airbag, at NO COST to you.
Accordingly, would you kindly contact your Lexus dealer as soon as possible to schedule an appointment to have the airbag replacement carried out.
The labour time to replace the airbag module is approximately 30 minutes. However, depending upon the dealers work schedule, it may be necessary to make your vehicle available for a longer period of time.
Please present this notice to the dealer when you take the vehicle in for your appointment.
