Note: Your power cable may be connected to the power supply already.

Note: Connect one end to the printer and the other end to a computer or an Internet appliance, such as a set-top box.

Load plain paper in the paper tray print side down.
Note:Load no more than 100 sheets of paper in the paper tray.

Squeeze and slide both paper guides against the edges of the paper.

Remove the print cartridge from its packaging.
Remove the sticker and transparent tape from the print cartridge.
Warning: Do not touch the gold contact area on the cartridge.

Note:The cartridge carr ier may move slightly, and then return to the loading position.
Push up on the cartridge lever.
Note: The cartridge holder springs open.

Insert the color print cartridge into the front carrier slot.
Push the cartridge lever back to secure it under the cartridge hook.

SNAP
Press the cartridge lever down until it snaps into place.
Note: You may also purchase a black print cartridge. T o install it, repeat steps 9 through 14 using the back carrier slot.
Close the cartridge door.

Congratulations! You can now print using a set-top box.
The first time you send a document to print, an alignment page prints. Your printer uses this page to align the print cartridges. You will need to resend your document to print.

Supporting equipment
Your printer can support equipment or objects that weigh less than twenty pounds. You may want to place an item such as a VCR, a set-top box, or a scanner on top of your printer.
Warning: Do not place objects totaling more than 20 lbs on your
printer.

To print using a computer, continue with the following installation steps:
Make sure your computer is on.

Click Cancel on any screens similar to the one shown.

Insert the CD. Wait for the driver to load.

Click Install Now and follow the instructions on the screen to install the software.

Note: If the above installation screen does not appear, click Start Run. In the command-line text box, type the letter of your CD drive, followed by :\setup (for example, d:\setup), and then click OK.

How to print
Using th e paper tray
The paper tray is designed for use with plain or photo paper. You can load the following paper sizes in the paper tray:
Width: 4–8.5 in. (102–2 16 mm) Length: 6–11.7 in. (152–297 mm)
When you load paper into the paper tray:
Load up to And make sure
100 sheets of plain paper
25 sheets of photo paper or photo cards
The print side is facing down.
The glossy or coated side is facing down.
To remove each photo as it exits the printer and let it dry
before stacking.

Load the paper

Load paper into the paper tray print side down.
Note: When printing smaller sizes, remove other paper from the
tray and adjust the guides to fit the smaller paper.

Using the manual feed slot
The manual feed slot is designed for use with specialty paper such as envelopes, photo cards, transparencies, or iron-on transfers one at a time. You can load the following paper sizes in the manual feed slot:
Width: 3–8.5 in. (76.2–216 mm) Length: 5–11.7 in. (127–297 mm)
See page 11 for instructions on how to load paper into the manual feed slot.

Load the paper
1 Turn the printer so the left side is facing you. 2 Insert the paper against the right edge of the manual feed slot.
The printer will detect the paper and pull it into the printer. This may take two to three seconds.
Note: Make sure you load paper into the manual feed slot before
you send your document to print.

Using a set-top box
If your printer is attached to a set-top box, press the print button or select Print from your application.
Note: The time it takes to start printing may vary depending on
your application.
Using a computer
If your printer is attached to a computer:
1 Open Printer Properties from your software application to customize
printer settings Windows 98 and Windows Me: From the file you want to print, click
Print Properties.

Windows 2000: From the file you want to print, click File the Printer Settings tab, click Change.
Note: For some software applications in Windows 2000, follow
the instructions for Windows 98 and Windows Me to open Printing Preferences.

If you want to make other changes, such as print quality or print style, go to the other Printer Properties tabs.

Remove your document
Being careful not to touch the ink, remove the printed document from the exit tray.
Note: To avoid a paper jam, remove your documents before 25
sheets accumulate in the exit tray.

Maintenance
Installing or replacing cartridges
1 Make sure plain paper is loaded in the paper tray. 2 Make sure the power light is on. 3 Open the cartridge door.
Note: Th e cartridge carrier may move slightly, and then return to
the loading position.
4 Push up on the cartridge lever.
Note: The cartridge holder springs open.
5 Remove the old print cartridge and dispose of it.

Remove the sticker and transparent tape from the new print cartridge.
Warning: Do not touch the gold contact area on the print cartridge.
7 Install the new print cartridge:

Insert the cartridge into the carrier slot.
Push the cartridge lever back to secure it under the cartridge hook.
Note: Insert the color cartridge in the front carrier slot. Insert the
black cartridge in the back carrier slot.
8 Close the cartridge door.
Press the cartridge lever down until it snaps into place.

Note: The next time you send a document to print, an alignment
page prints. Your printer uses the alignment page to align the cartridges. You may need to resend your document to print.
Aligning cartridges using a computer
1 Load plain paper. 2 Double-click the Lexmark Solution Center icon on your desktop to
open the Lexmark Solution Center. Click Print Cartridges Cartridges.
3 To align the cartridges automatically, select Automatic Alignment, and
then click Next. An alignment page prints. To change the automatic alignment settings and align the cartridges
manually, select Manual Alignment, and then click Next. An alignment test page prints and the Align Cartridges dialog box
displays. The test page that prints has several alignment patterns, depending on which cartridges are installed. Each pattern has a number under it. The printed test page is similar to the one shown:

have selected.

c After you have entered a number for all of the patterns, click OK.
Cleaning the cartridge nozzles
If the print quality is not satisfactory, you may need to print a nozzle test page. This forces extra ink through the nozzles to unclog them.
Using a set-top box
1 Press the power button to turn the printer off. 2 Press and hold the power button for about five seconds.
The printed nozzle test page is similar to the one shown:
3 Print your original document to see if print quality is satisfactory. If it is
not, print a nozzle test page up to two more times.

Double-click the Lexmark Solution Center icon on your desktop, and then select Print Cartridges Clean the Cartridge Nozzles.
A nozzle test page prints. The printed test page is similar to the one shown:
2 Compare the diagonal lines above the printed bars to the diagonal
lines below the printed bars. Look for a break in the diagonal lines below the printed bars. Unbroken lines indicate clean nozzles. Broken lines indicate clogged nozzles.
If the bottom lines have breaks, print the nozzle test pattern up to two more times. Then print your original document to see if the print quality is satisfactory.
Preserving cartridges
To ensure the longest life from your cartridge and optimum performance from your printer:
K eep a new print cartridge in its packaging until you are ready to install
it.
Do not remove a print cartridge from the printer except to replace,
realign, clean, or store it in an air-tight container. The print cartridge does not print correctly if removed from the printer and left exposed for an extended period of time.

Your printer warranty does not cover repair of failures or damage caused by a refilled cartridge. Lexmark does not recommend use of refilled cartridges. Refilling cartridges can affect print quality and cause damage to the printer. For best results, use Lexmark supplies.
Removing the power supply
1 Position the printer so the power supply is facing you. 2 To access the release tab, pull the printer slightly ov er the edge of the
surface it is resting on. The release tab is located under the power supply.
3 Reach under the power supply and pull the release tab forward to pull
the power supply out of the printer.

Tr oubleshooting
If your printer has a problem, first make sure:
The power supply is plugged into your printer and an electrical outlet.
The USB cable is securely attached to your set-top box or your
computer and to your printer.
The sticker and transparent tape covering the bottom of each cartridge
is removed.
Your printer is turned on.
Blinking lights
If all of the lights are blinking, there may be a paper jam.
Paper jam
1 Press the power button to turn the printer off. 2 Look for a paper jam in the:

Note: You many need to remove the paper tray or open the side
door to reach the paper.
3 Gently remove the paper.
Note: If you opened the side door, push it back toward the printer,
and then push up on it to close it.
4 Make sure you have loaded the paper correctly. For help, see page 4. 5 Press the power button to turn the printer on. 6 Resend your document to print.
Solid lights
Paper out
If the paper out light is on, your printer may be out of paper.
1 Pull the paper tray completely out. 2 Load the paper. 3 Push the paper tray completely back in.
Ink low
If the top (color) ink light is on, your color print cartridge may be low on ink. If the bottom (black) ink light is on, your black print cartridge may be low on ink. You can continue using the cartridge that is low on ink until it is empty or until print quality is no longer satisfactory. Then, replace it with a new cartridge.

Statement of Limited Warranty Lexmark International, Inc. Lexington, KY
This warranty applies to the United States. For customers outside the U.S., refer to the country-specific warranty information that came with your product.
This Statement of Limited Warranty applies to this product if it was originally purchased for your use, and not for resale, from Lexmark or a Lexmark remarketer, referred to in this statement as “Remarketer.
Warranty
Lexmark warrants that this product:
Is manufactured from new parts, or new and serviceable used parts,
which perform like new parts
Is free from defects in material and workmanship
Conforms to Lexmarks official published specifications
Is in good working order
If this product does not function as warranted during the warranty period, contact a Remarketer or Lexmark for repair or replacement (at Lexmark’s option) without charge.
If this product is a feature or option, this statement applies only when that feature or option is used with the product for which it was designed. To obtain warranty service, you may be required to present the feature or option with the product.
If you transfer this product to another user, warranty service under the terms of this statement is available to that user for the remainder of the warranty period. You should transfer proof of original purchase and this statement to that user.
Warranty service
The warranty period is 12 months and starts on the date of original purchase as shown on the purchase receipt.

To obtain warranty service you may be required to present proof of original purchase. Warranty service will be provided at a Remarketer or a Lexmark designated location. You may be required to deliver your product to the Remarketer or Lexmark, or ship it prepaid and suitably packaged to a Lexmark designated location. You are responsible for loss of, or damage to, a product in transit to the Remarketer or the designated location.
When warranty service involves the exchange of a product or part, the item replaced becomes the property of the Remarketer or Lexmark. The replacement may be a new or repaired item. The replacement item assumes the remaining warranty period of the original product.
Replacement is not available to you if the product you present for exchange is defaced, altered, in need of a repair not included in warranty service, or damaged beyond repair. Also, such product must be free of any legal obligations and restrictions.
Before you present this product for warranty service, remove all programs, data, and removable storage media.

Free remote technical support is provided for this product throughout its warranty period. For products no longer covered by a Lexmark warranty, technical support may only be available for a fee.
Extent of warranty
We do not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of a product. Warranty service does not include repair of failures caused by:
Modification or attachments
Accidents or misuse
Unsuitable physical or operating environment
Maintenance by anyone other than Lexmark or a Lexmark authorized
servicer
Operation of a product beyond the limit of its duty cycle
Failure to have installed a maintenance kit as specified (if applicable)
Use of printing media outside of Lexmark specifications

Use of other than Lexmark supplies (such as toner cartridges, inkjet
cartridges, and ribbons)
Use of other than Lexmark product or component
ALL EXPRESS AND IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ARE LIMITED IN DURATION TO THE WARRANTY PERIOD. NO WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, WILL APPLY AFTER THIS PERIOD.
Limitation of liability
Your sole remedy under this Statement of Limited Warranty is set forth in this section. For any claim concerning performance or nonperformance of Lexmark or a Remarketer for this product under this Statement of Limited Warranty, you may recover actual damages up to the limit set forth in the following paragraph.
Lexmarks liability for actual damages from any cause whatsoever will be limited to the lesser of 1) $5,000 or 2) the amount you paid for the product that caused the damages. This limitation of liability will not apply to claims by you for bodily injury or damage to real property or tangible personal property for which Lexmark is legally liable. In no event will Lexmark be liable for any lost profits, lost savings, incidental damage, or other economic consequential damages. This is true even if you advise Lexmark or a Remarketer of the possibility of such damages. Lexmark is not liable for any claim by you based on a third party claim.
This limitation of remedies also applies to any developer of materials supplied to Lexmark. Lexmarks and the developers limitations of remedies are not cumulative. Such developer is an intended beneficiary of this limitation.
Additional rights
Some states do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, or do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the limitations or exclusions contained above may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights. You may also have other rights which vary from state to state.

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) compliance information statement
The Lexmark i3 has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) this device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.
The FCC Class B limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. The EPA ENERGY STAR Office Equipment program is a partnership effort with office equipment manufacturers to promote the introduction of energy-efficient products and to reduce air pollution caused by power generation.
Companies participating in this program introduce products that power down when they are not being used. This feature will cut the energy used by up to 50 percent. Lexmark is proud to be a participant in this program.
As an ENERGY STAR Partner, Lexmark International, Inc. has determined that this product meets the ENERGY STAR guidelines for energy efficiency.
