Donotopenthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingthenewpartuntilthedefectiveparthasbeenremoved fromthecomputerandyouarereadytoinstallthenewpart.Staticelectricity,althoughharmlesstoyou,can seriouslydamagecomputercomponentsandparts.
Whenyouhandlecomputerpartsandcomponents,taketheseprecautionstoavoidstatic-electricitydamage:
•Limityourmovement.Movementcancausestaticelectricitytobuilduparoundyou.
•Alwayscarefullyhandlethepartsandothercomputercomponents.HandlePCIcards,memorymodules, systemboards,andmicroprocessorsbytheedges.Nevertouchexposedcircuitry.
•Preventothersfromtouchingthepartsandothercomputercomponents.
•Beforeyoureplaceanewpart,touchthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingthenewparttoametal expansion-slotcoverorotherunpaintedmetalsurfaceonthecomputerforatleasttwoseconds.This reducesstaticelectricityfromthepackageandyourbody.
•Removethenewpartfromthestatic-protectivepackageanddirectlyinstallitinthecomputerwithout placingitonanyothersurface.Ifitishardforyoutodothisinyourspecicsituation,placethe static-protectivepackageofthenewpartonasmooth,levelsurface,andthenplacethenewparton thestatic-protectivepackage.
