COLD CLIMATE INSULATION
For cold climate installations, seal all cracks around your appliance with noncombustible material and wherever cold air could enter the room. It is especially important to insulate outside chase cavity between studs and under oor on which appliance rests, if oor is above ground level. Gas line holes and other openings should be caulked or stuffed with unfaced berglass insulation.
If the replace is being installed on a cement slab in cold climates, a sheet of plywood or other raised platform can be placed underneath to prevent cold transfer to the replace and into the room. It also helps to sheetrock inside surfaces and tape for maximum air tightness and caulk restops.
MANUFACTURED HOUSING
B-Vent Fireplaces are not approved for use in OEM or aftermarket manufactured housing built to HUD standards.
LOCATION
In selecting the location, the aesthetic and functional use of the appliance are primary concerns. However, vent system routing to the exterior and access to the fuel supply are also important.

PRE-INSTALLATION STEPS
The replace may be installed directly on a combustible oor or raised on a platform of an appropriate height. Do not place replace on carpeting, vinyl or other soft oor coverings. It may, however, be placed on at wood, plywood, particle board or other hard surfaces. Be sure replace rests on a solid continuous oor or platform with appropriate framing for support and so that no cold air can enter the room from under the replace.
The replace may be positioned and then the framing built around it, or the framing may be constructed and the replace positioned into the opening.
Usually, no special oor support is needed for the replace, however, to be certain:
1. Estimate the total weight of the replace
2. Measure the square footage of the oor
3. Note the oor construction, i.e. 2 x 6’s, 2 x
4. Use this information and consult your lo-

TYPICAL INSTALLATION SEQUENCE
The typical sequence of installation is outlined below; however, each installation is unique, resulting in variations to the steps described herein.
1. Construct the appliance framing.
2. Route gas supply line to appliance location.
3. Position the appliance.
4. Install the vent system and exterior termi-
nation.
5. Field wire and install operating control switch.
6. Make connection to gas supply.
7. Install (optional) outside Air Kit.
8. Install the logs and glowing embers
(rockwool).
9. Check appliance operation.
10. Adjust burner to ensure proper ame
appearance.
11. Attach "Safety in Operation" Warnings.
INSTALLING THE FIREPLACE
Step 1. Construct the Appliance Framing -
Frame appliance enclosure as illustrated in
Figure 8 on Page 7.
Note: The framed depth, 20-1/2" (521 mm)
from a framed wall, must always be measured from a finished surface. If a wall covering such as drywall is to be attached to the rear wall, then the 20-1/2" (521 mm) must be measured from the drywall surface. It is important that this dimension be exact.
If the appliance is to be elevated above oor level, a solid continuous platform must be constructed.
The header may rest on the top metal spacers, but must not be notched to t around them.
Consult all local codes.
Step 2. Route Gas Supply Line - Route gas line (Figure 9) using techniques and materials prescribed by local and/or national codes. It is recommended that a gas line of 1/2" or greater diameter be used to allow full gas volume to the replace. Undue pressure loss will occur if the pipe is too small. The appliance, as set up at the factory, is best suited for use with a gas line routed from the left side. The gas line may however be alternately routed from the right side.
Figure 9
This unit is provided with a gas line/switch wire outlet at both sides (see Figure 8 on Page 7). The gas line may be routed through this opening at either the right or left side. Route the Millivolt switch wire through the opening opposite form the gas line. To avoid cutting the Millivolt switch wire, do not route the switch wire through the opening with the gas line.
When rigid pipe is used, an ANSI approved manual shut-off valve and union must be installed upstream of the replace.
Ensure that a sediment trap is installed in the existing gas line, if not, install a sediment trap upstream to prevent moisture and contaminants from passing through trap to the appliance controls and burners. Failure to do so could prevent the appliance from operating reliably.

An external regulator must be used on all propane (L.P.G). heaters to reduce the supply tank pressure to 13" w.c. (maximum). Any copper tubing used to supply propane (L.P.G). from the tank must be internally tinned.
IMPORTANT: HOLD GAS VALVE SECURELY TO PREVENT MOVEMENT WHEN CONNECTING TO INLET GAS LINE
WARNING
CONNECTING DIRECTLY TO AN UNREGULATED PROPANE (L.P.G). TANK MAY CAUSE AN EXPLOSION.
All appliances are equipped with a gas ex line and shutoff valve attached directly to the gas control valve. To quickly and easily complete the gas line routing, use the gas ex line kit.
Step 3. Position the Appliance - Slide the replace into prepared framing or position replace in its nal position and frame later.
Refer to replace drawings and specications on Page 7 for framing dimensions and details. Framing header may be positioned directly on the replace top spacers.
IMPORTANT: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES CAN THE FIREPLACE TOP SPACERS (refer to Figure 10) BE REMOVED OR MODIFIED, NOR MAY YOU NOTCH THE HEADER TO FIT AROUND OR BE INSTALLED LOWER THAN THE SPACERS. THE HEADER MAY BE IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE TOP SPACERS BUT MAY NOT BE SUPPORTED BY THEM.
Note: The nailing flanges and the area directly behind the nailing tabs are exempt from the clearances described on the fireplace clearance label.
Step 4. Install the Vent System and Exterior Termination
Slip a 10" (254 mm) B-Vent system over the appliance collar (Figure 11) and secure with four sheetmetal screws (# 8 or larger). Minimum overall height of the vent system and appliance must be 12' (3.66 m) vertical (no offset) or 17' (5.18 m) when an offset up to 45 degrees from the vertical is used. The lower part of the offset must not begin less than 3' (0.914 m) above the top of the replace (see Figure 12).
Maximum overall height of the vent system and appliance should not exceed 40 feet (12.19m).
Install the B-vent system in accordance with the vent manufacturer's instructions.
CAUTION: THIS APPLIANCE CANNOT BE VENTED HORIZONTALLY.
Note: Refer to the vent manufacturers installation instructions for variations of venting techniques. If common venting of several units is contemplated, it should be discussed with an architect and the local Building Department.

Step 6. Connecting Gas Line – Make gas line connections. All codes require a shut-off valve mounted in the supply line. Figure 17 illustrates the method for connecting the gas supply. The ex-line method utilizing the gas ex line provided with the appliance is acceptable in the U.S., however, Canadian requirements vary depending on locality. Installation must be in compliance with local codes.
The gas control valve is located in the lower control compartment. To access the valve remove the refractory access panel and set aside (Figure 16). The control valve has a 3/8" (10 mm) NPT thread inlet port.
Secure all joints tightly using appropriate tools and sealing compounds (ensure propane resistant compounds are used in propane applications).
Figure 16
TEST ALL CONNECTIONS FOR GAS LEAKS (FACTORY AND FIELD):
WARNING
Never use an open flame to check for leaks.
Turn on gas supply and test for gas leaks, using a gas leak test solution (also referred to as bubble leak solution).
Note: Using a soapy water solution (50% dish soap, 50% water) is an effective leak test solution but it is not recommended, because the soap residue that is left on the pipes/ttings can result in corrosion over time. Never use
an open flame to check for leaks.
A. Light the appliance (refer to the lighting
instructions label in the control compartment or in the Homeowner's Care and Operation Instructions).
B. Brush all joints and connections with the gas leak test solution to check for leaks. If bubbles are formed, or gas odor is detected, turn the gas control knob to the “OFF” position. Either tighten or refasten the leaking connection and retest as described above.
C. When the gas lines are tested and leak free, be sure to rinse off the leak testing solution.
D. When the gas lines are tested and leak free, observe the individual tongues of ame on the burner. Make sure all ports are open and producing ame evenly across the burner. If any ports are blocked, or partially blocked, clean out the ports.
Note: The gas supply line must be installed in accordance with building codes by a qualified installer
approved and/or licensed
as required by the locality. In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, installation must be performed by a licensed plumber or gas fitter.

Step 7. Optional Outside Air Kits – Combustion (outside make-up air) kits, Model FOAK-4 or FAOK-4LD, may used with these appliances. Refer to the installation instructions packaged with the air kits for specic installation information. The outside air kit must be installed before the replace is framed and enclosed in the nished wall.
Outside air drawn into the replace supplies air to the re for combustion. Only one combustion air duct on the right side of the replace is necessary if installed.
If additional length of duct is necessary, purchase locally available U.L. Class 0 or Class 1 metallic ducting. The duct may extend up to 50' (15.24 m) in any direction.
There is one hand operated air gate shut-off, for outside make-up air, located at the right side of the replace opening behind the screen. To open, lift and pull the handle out. The combustion air damper should be open when the fireplace is in use and, to prevent outside air from entering your home, fully closed when the replace is not in operation.
CAUTION: NEVER LOCATE INLET OF AN OUTSIDE AIR HOOD WHERE IT CAN BE BLOCKED BY SHRUBS, SNOW DRIFTS, ETC. NEVER LOCATE INLET IN GARAGE OR ANY AREA WHERE THERE IS ANOTHER FUEL BURNING APPLIANCE OR PRODUCTS EMITTING COMBUSTIBLE GASES SUCH AS PAINT, GASOLINE, ETC. IN COLD CLIMATES, IT IS RECOMMENDED THE COMBUSTION AIR DUCT BE INSULATED.
Outside combustion air ducting may be run upwards or vertically through framing and ceiling joists, with the hood installed through an outside wall and 3' (1 m) below the termination. Ducting may also be run downward through oor joists and under the home to a ventilated crawlspace not considered part of the living area of the home.
After installing the outside air kit, remove the cover from the shut off lever in the left side of the rebox opening.
NOTE: Do not terminate combustion air kit in attic space under any circumstances.
After completing the installation of the optional combustion air vent system the actuator arm must be put in service and tested to ensure proper operation before completing any enclosure around the rebox. Failure to do so may result in extensive and costly rework.
Operate the actuator through several cycles including the closed position. Ensuring proper operation and freedom of movement. Return the actuator arm to the closed position.
Step 8. Installing Logs and Glowing Embers (rockwool) –
WARNING
DO NOT attempt to install the logs until the appliance installation has been completed, the gas line connected and tested for leaks and the initial burner operation has been checked out.
The size and position of the log
set was engineered to give the appliance a safe, reliable and attractive flame pattern. Any attempt to use a different log set in the fireplace will void the warranty and will result in incomplete combustion, sooting, and poor flame quality.
Logs get very hot and will
remain hot up to one hour after gas supply is turned off. Handle only when logs are cool. Turn off all electricity to the appliance before you install grate, volcanic stone, vermiculite, embers and logs.
This appliance is not designed
to burn wood. Any attempt to do so could cause irreparable damage to the appliance and prove hazardous to your safety.
If logs are not installed
according to the log installation instructions, flame impingement and improper combustion could occur and result in soot and/or excessive production of carbon monoxide (CO), a colorless, odorless, toxic gas.
NOTE: Turn off all electricity to the appliance before you install embers and logs. DO NOT attempt to install the logs until the appliance installation has been completed, the gas line connected and tested for leaks and the initial burner operation has been checked out.
INSTALLATION STEPS:
READ WARNINGS ON THIS PAGE BEFORE PROCEEDING. FOLLOW THE LOG PLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS EXACTLY
The logs are packaged within the rebox. Remove the glowing embers from the packaging and tear into dime size pieces. Do not use more than is necessary.
Displace Volcanic Stone to the center of the burner pan when removing and reinstalling the burner tube.
The log set shown in this document (Figure
19) is typical, installation of all sets are similar.
Proper log placement is critical to prevent sooting. Carefully position the ceramic ber logs over the burner as described in the following steps, and detailed in Figures 18 through 24.
Note: Logs should be placed in the gaps between the flame peaks and should be positioned so that at no time they impinge the flames.
The logs are packaged within the rebox. The Volcanic Stone (2 bags) and Glowing Embers (rockwool) (1 bag) are in the bottom of the burner tray.
Spread 1-1/2 bags of Volcanic Stone evenly inside of the burner tray, as shown in Figure
18. The rest of the 1/2 bag of Volcanic Stone should be used only on LSBV-42 models, placed on the open spaces on the bottom of the rebox between the refractory and burner tray.

Step 3. Place the left log as shown in Figure 22, on the landing of the rear log. Make sure
the landing on the front end of the log is resting on the rst left nger of the grate, as shown
in Figure 22.
Figure 19
These appliances are equipped with a beautifully crafted six (6) piece ceramic ber log set. The logs are to be positioned precisely as shown. Any modication to the lay of the logs may result in sooting, property damage and injury or death.
The rear log has mating holes for pin engagement on its bottom side. DO NOT force a hole into a log by engaging the pins where they are not intended to go.
Apparent minor mis-alignment of the pins and holes or landings can be eliminated by gently adjusting the position of the logs until the pins, holes or landings easily mate.
Step 2. Position the bottom log, (see Figure 18 and Figure 21) between the two vertical
brackets of the burner tray.
Remove the Glowing Embers from the plastic bag and tear into quarter size pieces, as shown in Figure 21. Spread across the front part of the burner. Do Not use more than is necessary to cover the burner. When properly positioned, the Glowing Embers will unevenly cover approximately 85% of the burner with no appreciable gaps.

Note: Instructions are also found on the pull out lighting instructions label attached to the gas control valve.
When rst lighting the appliance, it will take a few minutes for the line to purge itself of air. Once purging is complete, the pilot and burner will light and operate as indicated in the instruction manual.
Subsequent lightings of the appliance will not require such purging. Inspect the pilot ame (remove logs, if necessary, handling carefully).
MANUALLY-RESET BLOCKED FLUE SAFETY SWITCH
This appliance is equipped with a manually-reset blocked ue safety switch. Refer to Figure 26 for its location. If during appliance operation, the ame goes out (independently of the burner on/off wall switch), it may be due to the operation of this safety limit switch. First allow the appliance to cool. Then reset the safety switch by pushing the red reset button.
This reset button is located on the back of the limit switch, between the wire terminals (see
Detail A of Figure 26).
The appliance should then relight and remain lit. If this does not occur, turn off the appli-
ance and call a qualified service technician.
Millivolt Appliance Checkout
The pilot ame should be steady, not lifting or oating. Flame should be blue in color with traces of orange at the outer edge.
The top 3/8" (9 mm) at the pilot generator (thermopile) should be engulfed in the pilot ame. The ame should project 1" (25 mm) beyond the hood at all three ports (Figure 27).

Step 10. BURNER ADJUSTMENTS
Flame Appearance and Sooting
Proper ame appearance is a ame which is blue at the base and becomes yellowish-orange in the body of the ame. When the appliance is rst lit, the entire ame may be blue and will gradually turn yellowish-orange during the rst 15 minutes of operation. After 15 minutes of operation, if the ame is blue, or if the ame is orange with evidence of sooting (black tip), the air shutter opening may need to be adjusted.
If the air shutter opening is closed too far, sooting may develop. Sooting is indicated by black puffs developing at the tips of very long orange ames. Sooting results in black deposits forming on the logs, appliance inside surfaces and on exterior surfaces adjacent to the vent termination.
Sooting is caused by incomplete combustion in the ames and lack of combustion air entering the air shutter opening. To achieve a warm yellowish-orange ame with an orange body that does not soot, the shutter opening must be adjusted between these two extremes.
Air Shutter Adjustment Guidelines
• If there is smoke or soot present, rst check the log set positioning to ensure that the ames are not impinging on any of the logs. If the log set is properly positioned and a sooting condition still exists, then the air shutter opening should be increased.
• If there are offsets in the vent system, the air shutter opening may need to be increased.
• An appliance operated with the air shutter opened too far, may have ames that appear blue and transparent. These weak, blue and transparent ames are termed anemic.
• Propane models may exhibit ames which candle or appear stringy. If this is present and persists, adjust the air shutter to a more open position, then operate the appliance for a few more minutes to ensure that the ame normalizes and the ames do not appear sooty.
The following chart is provided to aid you in achieving the correct air shutter adjustment for your installation.
Burner Air Shutter Adjustment Procedure
WARNING
Air shutter adjustment should only be performed by a qualified professional service technician.
CAUTION
Soot will be produced if the
air shutter is closed too much. Any damage due to carboning resulting from improperly setting the air shutter is not covered under the warranty.
The air shutter door and nearby
appliance surfaces are hot. Exercise caution to avoid injury while adjusting flame appearance.
Burner Air Shutter Adjustment Procedure
To adjust the ame, position the air shutter to the nominal setting (Figure 29). Allow the burner to operate for at least 30 minutes. Observe the ame continuously. If it appears weak or sooty as previously described, adjust the air shutter open or closed until desired effect is achieved.
NOTE: If the flame still appears anemic with the air shutter closed all the way (usually a result of lengthy vertical venting runs), turn off the appliance, turn off the gas supply, wait for the parts to cool and access the air shutter. The shutter is prevented from actually closing by a tab that is bent over into the opening. Remove this obstruction by bending back. Reassemble and restart the appliance and after 24 minutes reobserve the flame. Adjust the air shutter as described.
