COLD CLIMATE INSULATION
For cold climate installations, seal all cracks around your appliance with noncombustible material and wherever cold air could enter the room. It is especially important to insulate outside chase cavity between studs and under oor on which appliance rests, if oor is above ground level. Gas line holes and other openings should be caulked or stuffed with unfaced berglass insulation.
If the replace is being installed on a cement slab in cold climates, a sheet of plywood or other raised platform can be placed underneath to prevent cold transfer to the replace and into the room. It also helps to sheetrock inside surfaces and tape for maximum air tightness and caulk restops.
MANUFACTURED HOUSING
B-Vent Fireplaces are not approved for use in OEM or aftermarket manufactured housing built to HUD standards.

AVERTISSEMENT
Risque de dommages ou de blessures si les pièces ne sont pas installées conformément à ces schémas et ou si des pièces autres que celles spécifiquement approuvées avec cet appareil sont utilisées.
PRE-INSTALLATION STEPS
The replace may be installed directly on a combustible oor or raised on a platform of an appropriate height. Do not place replace on carpeting, vinyl or other soft oor coverings. It may, however, be placed on at wood, plywood, particle board or other hard surfaces. Be sure replace rests on a solid continuous oor or platform with appropriate framing for support and so that no cold air can enter the room from under the replace.
The replace may be positioned and then the framing built around it, or the framing may be constructed and the replace positioned into the opening.
Usually, no special oor support is needed for the replace, however, to be certain:
1. Estimate the total weight of the replace
system and surround materials such as brick, stone, etc., to be installed.
2. Measure the square footage of the oor
space to be occupied by the system, surrounds and hearth extensions.
3. Note the oor construction, i.e. 2 x 6’s, 2 x
8’s or 2 x 10’s, single or double joists, type and thickness of oor boards.

INSTALLING THE FIREPLACE
Step 1. Construct Appliance Framing
Frame appliance enclosure as illustrated in
Figure 8.
NOTE: The nailing flanges, combustible framing members and screw heads located in areas directly adjacent to the nailing flanges, are EXEMPT from the 1/2" clearance to combustible requirements for the firebox wrapper. Combustible framing may be in direct contact with the nailing flanges and may be located closer than 1/2" from screw heads and the firebox wrapper in areas adjacent to the nailing flanges. Frame the opening to the exact dimensions specified in the framing details of this manual.
NOTE: The framed depth, 21-5/8" (549 mm) from a framed wall, must always be measured from a finished surface. If a wall covering such as drywall is to be attached to the rear wall, then the 21-5/8" (549 mm) must be measured from the drywall surface. It is important that this dimension be exact.
If the appliance is to be elevated above oor level, a solid continuous platform must be constructed.
The header may rest on the top metal spacers, but must not be notched to t around them.
Consult all local codes.
NOTE: DIAGRAMS & ILLUSTRATIONS ARE NOT TO SCALE.
Step 2. Route Gas Supply Line
Refer to Figure 9. Using techniques and materials prescribed by local and/or national codes. It is recommended that a gas line of 1/2" or greater diameter be used to allow full gas volume to the replace. Undue pressure loss will occur if the pipe is too small. The appliance, as set up at the factory, is best suited for use with a gas line routed from the right side. The gas line may however be alternately routed from the left side.
7-5/8"
(194mm)
3-1/8"
Figure 9
NOTE: Ensure the Millivolt valve wire is not routed through the same hole as the gas line. Route the Millivolt wire through the opposite side from the gas line.
When rigid pipe is used, an ANSI approved manual shut-off valve and union must be installed upstream of the replace.
Ensure that a sediment trap is installed in the existing gas line, if not, install a sediment trap upstream to prevent moisture and contaminants from passing through trap to the appliance controls and burners. Failure to do so could prevent the appliance from operating reliably.
An external regulator must be used on all propane (L.P.G). appliances to reduce the supply tank pressure to 13" w.c. (maximum). Any copper tubing used to supply propane (L.P.G). from the tank must be internally tinned.
IMPORTANT: HOLD GAS VALVE SECURELY TO PREVENT MOVEMENT WHEN CONNECTING TO INLET GAS LINE
(79mm)
WARNING
CONNECTING DIRECTLY TO AN UNREGULATED PROPANE (L.P.G). TANK MAY CAUSE AN EXPLOSION.
All appliances are equipped with a gas ex line and shutoff valve attached directly to the gas control valve. To quickly and easily complete the gas line routing, use the gas ex line kit.

Step 6. Connect to Gas Line
Make gas line connections. All codes require a shut-off valve mounted in the supply line. Figure 16 illustrates two methods for connecting the gas supply. The ex-line method is acceptable in the U.S., however, Canadian requirements vary depending on locality. Installation must be in compliance with local codes. The gas control valve is located in the lower control compartment. To access the valve remove the refractory access panel and set aside (Figure 15 ).

Figure 15
NOTE: The gas supply line
must be installed in accordance with building codes by a qualified installer
approved and/or licensed
as required by the locality. In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, installation must be performed by a licensed plumber or gas fitter.
NOTE: DIAGRAMS & ILLUSTRATIONS ARE NOT TO SCALE.
The millivolt control valve has a 3/8" (10 mm) NPT thread inlet port.
The electronic control valve has a 1/2" (13 mm) NPT thread inlet port and is tted with a 1/2" x 3/8" (13 mm x 10 mm) NPT tting.
Both the millivolt and electronic models are tted with a 3" (76 mm) long nipple, 3/8" NPT. Plan the connections accordingly.
Secure all joints tightly using appropriate tools and sealing compounds (ensure propane resistant compounds are used in propane applications).
TEST ALL CONNECTIONS FOR GAS LEAKS (FACTORY AND FIELD):
WARNING
Never use an open flame to check for leaks.
Turn on gas supply and test for gas leaks, using a gas leak test solution (also referred to as bubble leak solution).
NOTE: Using a soapy water solution (50% dish soap, 50% water) is an effective leak test solution but it is not recommended, because the soap residue that is left on the pipes/ttings can result in corrosion over time.
A. Light the appliance (refer to the lighting instructions label in the control compartment or in the Homeowner's Care and Operation Instructions).
B. Brush all joints and connections with the gas leak test solution to check for leaks. If bubbles are formed, or gas odor is detected, turn the gas control knob to the “OFF” position. Either tighten or refasten the leaking connection and retest as described above.
C. When the gas lines are tested and leak free, be sure to rinse off the leak testing solution.
D. When the gas lines are tested and leak free, observe the individual tongues of ame on the burner. Make sure all ports are open and producing ame evenly across the burner. If any ports are blocked, or partially blocked, clean out the ports.

Step 7. Install (Optional) Outside Air Kit
These appliances are equipped with an outside (make-up) air door and integral actuator arm. If the appliance is to be installed with an outside air vent system, use only Lennox Hearth Products Models FAOK-4 or FAOK-4LD Combustion Air Kits.
After completing the installation of the optional combustion air vent system the actuator arm must be put in service and tested to ensure proper operation before completing any enclosure around the rebox. Failure to do so may result in extensive and costly rework.
WARNING
DO NOT REMOVE THE ACTUATOR ARM LOCKING SCREW UNLESS THE COMPLETE OUTSIDE AIR VENT SYSTEM HAS BEEN INSTALLED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS PROVIDED WITH THE KIT.
Locate the actuator arm along the right side of the appliance rebox opening and refer to Figure 17. After completing the installation of the Outside Combustion Air Kit remove and discard the actuator arm locking screw.
To operate, push the end of the actuator to the left as shown in Figure 17, until it "pops" free of its "locked" position. Pull the actuator forward to open the combustion air door, and push it back to close. To "lock" the combustion air door closed, ensure the actuator is pushed all the way back then push the end of the actuators to the right until the step in the actuator moves behind the appliance front face within the slotted opening.
Operate the actuator through several cycles including the "lock" position. Ensuring proper operation and freedom of movement. Return the actuator arm to the locked position.

CAUTION
Never locate inlet where it can be blocked by shrubs, snow drifts, etc. Never locate inlet in garage or any area where there is another fuel burning appliance or products emitting combustible gases such as paint, gasoline, etc. In cold climates, it is recommended the outside air duct be insulated.
Step 8. Install Logs and Glowing Embers
The logs are packaged and boxed within the rebox. The bag of glowing embers is in the lower control compartment. Remove the glowing embers from the packaging and tear into quarter size pieces (see the Care and Operation Instructions).
Carefully position the ceramic ber log assembly onto the burner, refer to the Care and Operation Instructions for detailed log description and placement instructions. Position the logs onto the pins of the burner, with the cutouts tted around the burner tube. Ensure the rear log matches the cutout on its bottom with the position of the pilot.
WARNING
• DO NOT attempt to install the
logs until the appliance installation has been completed, the gas line connected and tested for leaks and the initial burner operation has been checked out. The size and position of the log
set was engineered to give the appliance a safe, reliable and attractive flame pattern. Any attempt to use a different log set in the fireplace will void the warranty and will result in incomplete combustion, sooting, and poor flame quality. Logs get very hot and will
remain hot up to one hour after gas supply is turned off. Handle only when logs are cool. Turn off all electricity to the appliance before you install grate and logs. This appliance is not designed
to burn wood. Any attempt to do so could cause irreparable damage to the appliance and prove hazardous to your safety. If logs are not installed
according to the log installation instructions, flame impingement and improper combustion could occur and result in soot and/or excessive production of carbon monoxide (CO), a colorless, odorless, toxic gas.
12
NOTE: DIAGRAMS & ILLUSTRATIONS ARE NOT TO SCALE.
LENNOX HEARTH PRODUCTS • MERIT® SERIES B-VENT GAS FIREPLACES • 42" LMBV MODELS • INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Proper log placement is critical to prevent sooting. Carefully position the ceramic ber logs over the burner as described in the following steps, and detailed in Figures 18 through 23.
NOTE: Logs should be placed in the gaps between the flame peaks and should be positioned so that at no time they impinge the flames.
Step 1. Remove the glowing embers (rockwool) from the packaging and tear into nickel size pieces. Spread the glowing embers evenly on top of the burner. Do not use more than is necessary. The glowing embers should not cover the burner ports, as shown in Figure 18.
Step 2. Place the hole at the bottom of the Rear Log over the pin at the rear of the log grate, as shown in Figure 19. The log should rest against the back refractory.
Step 3. Place the Rear Top Log over the left side of the Rear Log. Lay the log over the top left corner of the Rear Log, as shown in Figure 20. The log should rest against the back refractory.
Step 4. Engage the bottom hole of the Front Left Log with designated pin on the grate, and align the bottom groove of the log over the far left grate bar. See Figure 21.
Step 5. Engage the bottom hole of the Front Right Log with designated pin on the far right grate bar. Align the groove on the bottom of the log over the far right grate bar. See Figure 22.

operation, the ame goes out (independently of the burner on/off wall switch), it may be due to the operation of this safety limit switch. First
When rst lighting the appliance, it will take a few minutes for the line to purge itself of air. Once purging is complete, the pilot and burner will light and operate as indicated in the instruction manual.
Subsequent lightings of the appliance will not require such purging. Inspect the pilot ame (remove logs, if necessary, handling carefully).
allow the appliance to cool. Then reset the safety switch by pushing the red reset button on the back of the switch.
CAUTION: THE ELECTRONIC APPLIANCE SHOULD BE TURNED OFF BEFORE REMOVING THE LIMIT SWITCH.
To access the safety limit switch reset button, remove the screen rod and screen from the right side of the replace. Unscrew two screws and remove the limit switch with low voltage wires attached. Push the reset button, then reinstall the limit switch. Reinstall the screen and rod. At this time turn the electronic appliance back on.
The appliance should then relight and remain lit. If this does not occur, turn off the appli-
ance and call a qualified service technician.

Step 10. Burner Adjustments
Flame Appearance and Sooting
Proper ame appearance is a ame which is blue at the base and becomes yellowish-orange in the body of the ame.
When the appliance is rst lit, the entire ame may be blue and will gradually turn yellowishorange during the rst 15 minutes of operation. After 15 minutes of operation, if the ame is blue, or if the ame is orange with evidence of sooting (black tip), the air shutter opening may need to be adjusted.
If the air shutter opening is closed too far, sooting may develop. Sooting is indicated by black puffs developing at the tips of very long orange ames. Sooting results in black deposits forming on the logs, appliance inside surfaces and on exterior surfaces adjacent to the vent termination.
Sooting is caused by incomplete combustion in the ames and lack of combustion air entering the air shutter opening. To achieve a warm yellowish-orange ame with an orange body that does not soot, the shutter opening must be adjusted between these two extremes.
Air Shutter Adjustment Guidelines
• If there is smoke or soot present, rst check the log set positioning to ensure that the ames are not impinging on any of the logs. If the log set is properly positioned and a sooting condition still exists, then the air shutter opening should be increased.
• The more offsets in the vent system, the larger the air shutter opening will need to be.
• An appliance operated with the air shutter opened too far, may have ames that appear blue and transparent. These weak, blue and transparent ames are termed anemic.
• Propane models may exhibit ames which candle or appear stringy. If this is present and persists, adjust the air shutter to a more closed position, then operate the appliance for a few more minutes to ensure that the ame normalizes and the ames do not appear sooty.
Burner Air Shutter Adjustment Procedure
WARNING
Air shutter adjustment should only be performed by a qualified professional service technician.
CAUTION
Soot will be produced if the
air shutter is closed too much. Any damage due to carboning resulting from improperly setting the air shutter is not covered under the warranty.
The air shutter door and nearby
appliance surfaces are hot. Exercise caution to avoid injury while adjusting flame appearance.
Burner Adjustment Procedure
To adjust the ame, position the air shutter to the nominal setting (Figure 28). Allow the burner to operate for at least 30 minutes. Observe the ame continuously. If it appears weak or sooty as previously described, adjust the air shutter open or closed until desired effect is achieved.
NOTE: If the flame still appears anemic with the air shutter closed all the way (usually a result of lengthy vertical venting runs), turn off the appliance, turn off the gas supply, wait for the parts to cool and access the air shutter. The shutter is prevented from actually closing by a tab that is bent over into the opening. Remove this obstruction by bending back. Reassemble and restart the appliance and after 30 minutes reobserve the flame. Adjust the air shutter as described.
