To avoid tipover and insure stability, do not operate the unit with the tension adjustment
wing nuts completely loosened (see Reclining Tension Adjustment Instructions).
• Do not attempt to disassemble or service the pump or motor; no serviceable parts are

• The 1SM and 1SN Shiatsu massage chairs are intended for a single occupant not
exceeding 300 pounds. Do not operate the chair with more than one occupant in

• Make sure all operation switches are in the OFF position before connecting the power
cord to an electrical outlet. If the electricity is off, turn the power switch to the OFF

WARNING
• Unplug the power cord before connecting or disconnecting the hand wand.
• Unplug the power cord immediately if you detect strange odors or fumes coming from the chair.
• To reduce the risk of electric shock, this product has a polarized plug (one blade is wider
than the other). This plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit
fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to
install the proper outlet. Do not change the plug in any way.
• Do not service double-insulated products. In a double-insulated product, two systems of
insulation are provided instead of grounding. No grounding means is provided on a
double-insulated product, nor should a means for grounding be added to the product.
Servicing a double-insulated product requires extreme care and knowledge of the system,
and should be done only by qualified service personnel. Replacement parts for a
double-insulated product must be identical to the parts they replace. A double-insulated
product is marked with the words “DOUBLE INSULATION” or “DOUBLE INSULATED.”
The symbol on the right (square within a square) may also be marked on the product.
• Do not attempt to disconnect the power plug by pulling the power cord.Always hold the power
plug and pull it out.

• Check the position of the massaging rollers before leaning slowly back on the massager.
Lean straight back without twisting your body so that the massaging rollers are in position
on either side of your spine. Never force any body part into the backrest area while the
rollers are moving.
• Do not use the massager on your head, chest, abdomen, or bones (such as those in your elbow).
If you massage the nape of your neck, put a soft towel on your neck to reduce stimulation.
• The massager automatically cuts off after 15 minutes but may be restarted for another 15-minute
session. Do not use the massager for more than 30 minutes at a time.
• Do not sleep while using the product, or use product after drinking alcohol.
• If you give this product to someone else, include this Operating Instructions manual.

1. The electrical components box is attached to the rear seat swing. Carefully cut the
plastic tie and remove the box. Remove the power transformer and the power cord
from the box and set aside.

2. The upholstered back weighs approximately 45 pounds and is heavier toward the bottom.
If you are unable to safely lift and install the back, contact your La-Z-Boy
for assistance.
• Lay the back on the arms and seat (FI GURE 1). Align the back and body brackets.
Roll the top back up and guide the back brackets onto the body brackets, making
sure the two connectors and the bottom of the back fall between the rear rail
and the rear seat.
• Make sure that the upholstered back is flush with the tailgate to confirm that both
sets of brackets are completely engaged (F
• Lock the brackets by using a screwdriver to push down the locking levers (FIG URE 3).
3. Gently roll the chair forward to rest on the front arms to access the connectors
under the chair.
4. The two larger connectors on the right side (sitting) are for the hand wand connection.
Align the arrows on the connectors and push the connectors together. Fasten the threaded

The Shiatsu massage chair has a double-upholstered back designed to provide two levels of massage.
Leave the front back pillow in place for a gentle, relaxing massage (FIGUR E 1). Or flip the front back
pillow over the top of the chair for a vigorous massage (F
intensified by massaging in the reclined position.
Leave the front back pillow in place when using the massage for the first time. Sit in the center of
the seat for the proper massage position. Lean straight back, without twisting your body, so the
massage rollers are in position on either side of your spine. Press the Power button and then select
the Full Back, Lower Back or Upper Back button to begin the Shiatsu massage. Refer to the Hand
Wand diagram on the following page.
The massage will shut off after 15 minutes but may be restarted for another 15 minute session.

There are no user mainte nance or repair requir ements. If the Shia tsu massag e f unction
does not work, che ck th e f ol lowin g:
1. Make sure the 120 volt power cord is plugged into an electrical outlet.
2. Make sure the electrical outlet is working. For example, make sure there are no blown
fuses or tripped circuit breakers.
3. Make sure all the connectors are secure; refer to the Asse mbly Instruc tions.
4. Make sure the electrical cords are not crimped or pinched. Make sure the electric cord
or plug is not damaged.
5. Make sure the operating capacity has not been exceeded and there is only one
occupant in the unit.
If the Shiatsu massage recliner still does not operate properly, contact your dealer for
instructions on returning the chair for examination and repair. Except for replacement
of the power transformer, ne ver attemp t to mak e any repairs or adjust me nts yourself .

If the power transformer must be replaced:
1. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
2. Disconnect the power cord from the power transformer; refer to the Assembly Instructions.

4. Push the replacement power transformer connector into the connector behind the chair,
and push the power cord into the power transformer; refer to the Assembly Instructions.Make sure the conne ct ors are securely fas tened.

Reclining Tension Adjustment Instructions
3-Position Legrest Operating Instructions
WARNING
• This unit is equipped with a tension adjustment feature for the reclining mechanism
that is preset at the factory. The tension setting can be changed for your personal
preference. To avoid tip over and insure stability, do not operate the unit with the
tension adjustment wing nuts completely loosened.
– To reduce t he risk of injury:
NOTICE – To reduce t he risk of product damage:
• Make sure the legrest is closed before tilting forward and adjusting the tension.
• Do not completely tighten the wing nuts. The tension springs should not be completely
compressed after making adjustments. If this occurs, the wing nuts must be loosened
counterclockwise a minimum of ½-turn to avoid damage to the spring tension assembly.
• Do not completely loosen the wing nuts. The spring should not slide on the bolt after making
adjustments. If the spring slides on the bolt, tighten the wing nut clockwise a minimum
of ½-turn after the spring no longer slides on the bolt.
• Adjust both wing nuts equally.
Reclining Tension Adjustment Instructions:
You can adjust the tension of the reclining mechanism to respond to your individual size.
1. Unplug the power transformer from the electrical outlet. Gently roll the reclining chair
forward to rest on its arms and top of the back. Locate the wing nuts, one on each side,
toward the back of the recliner under the reclining seat (only one side shown below).
2. Adjust the tension by turning the wing nuts in ¼-turn increments until the desired
setting is reached.
• A taller or heavier person may choose to increase the reclining tension by tightening
the wing nuts clockwise.
• A smaller person may choose to decrease the reclining tension by loosening the wing
nuts counterclockwise.
3. Return the reclining chair to the upright position and test the new setting. Make additional
adjustments if needed, repeating these steps. Plug the power transformer directly into a
wall outlet.

The chair body can be tilted back when the legrest is in use. Shifting your body weight rearward will
cause the chair body to tilt backward offering a number of different positions.
