The # button in any position does not disconnect the mains line. Disconnect the mains plug to shut the power off completely (the STANDBY lamp goes off). The MAINS plug or an appliance coupler is used as the disconnect device, the disconnect device shall re­main readily operable.
• When the system is on standby, the STANDBY lamp lights red.
• When the system is turned on, the STANDBY lamp goes off. The power can be remote controlled.
CAUTION (SP-NXBD3W)
The power supply to the subwoofer is linked to the center unit. Disconnect the mains plug to shut the power off completely (the POWER ON lamp goes off). The MAINS plug or an appliance coupler is used as the disconnect device, the disconnect device shall re­main readily operable.
• When the system is turned on, the POWER ON lamp lights blue.

How to read this manual
•This manual explains operations assuming that
you will use the remote control. Some buttons on the main unit are the same as those on the remote control. You can use either button in this case.
Some diagrams in this manual are simplified or
exaggerated for the purpose of explanation.

Handling discs
• Do not use any non-standard shape disc. (like a heart, flower or credit card, etc.) available on the market, because it may damage the system.
•Do not use a disc with tape, stickers, or paste on it, because it may damage the system.
• Do not bend the disc.

BD/DVD region code
BD-ROM / DVD VIDEO players and BD-ROM / DVD VIDEO discs have their own Region Code numbers. This system can play back a BD-ROM / DVD VIDEO whose Region Code number includes the system’s Region Code, which is indicated on the rear panel.

If a BD-ROM / DVD VIDEO with improper region code numbers is loaded, “Region code error” appears on the TV screen and playback cannot start.
•On some BD-ROM their actual operation may be different from what is explained in this manual. This is due to the disc/file programming and disc/file structure, not a malfunction of this system.
•This system is designed for use with the PAL standard but you can also play back discs recorded in NTSC format.

Connecting the speakers and subwoofer

Connect the speakers to the subwoofer by connecting the colored connectors to the same color terminals on the rear of the subwoofer.

o IMPORTANT
• Improper speaker cable connection reduces the stereo effect and sound quality.
•The supplied left/right speakers are magnetically shielded, but color irregularity may occur on the TV
depending on some conditions. To prevent color irregularity, set up the speakers following the instructions below. (The subwoofer is not magnetically shielded.)
1. Turn off the main power of the TV before
setting up the speakers.
2. Place the speakers enough distance from the
TV so that they do not cause color irregularity on the TV.
3. Wait for approximately 30 minutes before
turning on the main power of the TV again.

•The supplied speakers are manufactured exclusively for use with the supplied main unit as parts of the NX-BD3 system. Do not connect the

Using the speakers with commercially available speaker stands
The left and right speakers can be fitted onto commercially available speaker stands. Before fitting the speakers onto commercially available speaker stands, follow the instructions shown below.

• The left and right speakers can be installed on a wall.
• When installing the speakers on a wall, be sure to have the speakers installed by qualified personnel.
• DO NOT install the speakers on the wall by yourself to avoid unexpected damage from them falling off the wall due to incorrect installation or weakne
•Care must be taken in selecting a location for speaker installation on a wall. Injury to personnel or damage to devices may result if the installed speakers interfere with daily activities.

of the left and right speakers and the subwoofer refers to 2.1 channel.) The front surround function processes input signals to create a realistic field.

Connecting a TV with the [HDMI] terminal
This system can output uncompressed digital video signals to a TV compatible with HDMI
(High-Definition Multimedia Interface).

NOTE
• The HDMI video signal type can be checked in the display window. (Refer to “Selecting the video signal type” on this page.)
• If the picture is distorted while an HDMI TV is connected, turn off the main unit and turn it on again.
•Only available for a TV compatible with HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) can be connected to the [HDMI] terminal, so that the uncompressed HD video signal type can be output.
•Use a
High Speed HDMI Cable.
• In default settings, no HDMI audio is output from the TV. (Refer to “HDMI AUDIO OUTPUT” on page 53)
CAUTION
• Connect the main unit directly to a TV (or a monitor) without routing through a video cassette recorder (VCR). Otherwise picture distortion may occur during playback. (Routing the connection through a VCR, however, does not affect the audio quality.)

Selecting the video signal type
To view an image on the TV screen, select the video signal type correctly according to the TV after connecting the main unit to the TV.
1 Change to the most appropriate
settings on your TV in advance.
2 Turn on the main unit. (Refer to
“Connecting the power cable on page 10 and Turning on the main unit on page 12.)
3 Press [SCAN MODE].

• Connecting the main unit to a VCR-built-in-TV may also cause picture distortion during playback.

4 Press [SCAN MODE] repeatedly and
select the appropriate signal type.
• According to the settings in step 1, select “576I”, “576P”, “720P”, or “1080I” for component output. Corresponding resolution with the TV can be selected for HDMI output.
•Despite the setting, “576I” is output when the TV is connected to the composite or [S- VIDEO] terminal.
• When the TV is connected to the HDMI terminal, selelect AUTO for normal usage.
Select 576P, 720P, 1080I, or 1080P as needed.
5 Set the initial settings for
connection. (Refer to CONNECTION SETTING on page
53)
NOTE
•Video signals cannot be changed even if you press [SCAN MODE] during startup or SD/disc playback.
• “576”, “720”, and “1080” refer to the number of
scanning lines. Generally, the larger number, the better will be the picture quality.
• “I” refers to the interlaced format. “P” refers to the progressive format. A better picture can be obtained in the progressive format than in the interlaced form
at.
• When an HD video signal (720P, 1080I, 1080P) is output, the “HD” indicator lights up.
• When “576P” or “720P” or “1080P” is selected, the “q” indicator lights up in the display window.
• When playback of an SD/disc is stopped, the
selected video signal type is displayed in the on screen display for a while.

Point the remote control directly at the front of the main unit.
• Do not block the remote control sensor on the main unit.
•Use the remote control at a position higher than the main unit.

Using this Product (Operation)

Turning on the main unit

Press [A AUDIO] on the remote control or [A] on the main unit.
•Press [A AUDIO] on the remote control or [A] on the main unit again to turn off the main unit.
• With the power off, pressing any of the following buttons also turns on the main unit.
-[DISC], [NETWORK], [SD], [FM/AM], [AUX], or [M]
on the remote control.
-[M], [DISC] or [NETWORK] on the main unit.
•The function assigned to the button starts working at the same time.

Switching to a program type of your choice temporarily
The Enhanced Other Networks function allows the main unit to switch temporarily to a broadcast program of your choice (“TA”, “News”, or “Info”) from a different radio station when you are listening to a Radio Data System radio station.

Displaying DivX subtitle text
You can display subtitle text onto the DivX video disc on this unit. This function has no relation to the subtitles specified in DivX standard specifications and has no clear standard. Depending on the methods used to create the file, the following functions may not work.

Playing from the folder list

You can play back files stored on a disc or SD card by making a selection from the folder list.

This function helps you to hear dialog recorded on the disc/file more easily even with the volume down low. This function is useful when you are watching a movie.

Selecting the sound level

When the source is a disc, “DISC” appears on a display window. You can increase the sound level when the media in use is compatible with “Multi ch” such as 5.1ch or
7.1ch. Channels can be recognized when the disc is pl
ayed back.

select SOUND LEVEL in the display window.
2 Press [+] or [-] repeatedly to select
the desired setting in the display window.
•Each time you press [+] or [-], the sound level display changes to one of the three levels. The sound level increases in the order of “SOUND NORMAL”, “SOUND MIDDLE” and “SOUND HIGH”.
•While selecting a sound level, listen to the actual sound to confirm the difference.

Selecting the main or sub channel (DUAL MONO)

You can select the playback sound (channel) you want while playing digital software recorded (or broadcasted) in the Dual Mono mode, which includes two monaural channels separately.

Adjusting the treble/bass sound

Adjusting the volume level for surround rear/subwoofer sound

You can adjust the volume level for the left and right surround rear sound and the subwoofer sound respectively.

select SUR. REAR or SUB WOOFER in the display window.
•“SUR. REAR” refers to the left and right surround rear sound.
•“SUB WOOFER” refers to the subwoofer sound.
Dual Mono
Dual Mono can be easily understood when you think of the bilingual broadcast for TV programs (however, the Dual Mono format is not identical with the analog formats). This format is now adopted in Dolby Digital, DTS, and so on. It allows two independent channels (called main channel and sub-channel) to be recorded separately.
• If the sound effect does not match your expectations, refer to “CHANGE AUDIO OUTPUT” on page 38.

Changing the brightness of the display window and illumination

Press [DIMMER].
•Each time you press [DIMMER], the display changes in the display window as follows.
•“DIMMER 1” The display window and illumination becomes darker than the normal display brightness.
•“DIMMER 2” The display window becomes darker than “DIMMER 1” and illumination is turned off.
•“DIMMER OFF” The normal display and illumination brightness is re
stored.

Enhancing the playback sound (K2)

The K2 function is designed to provide natural sound by improving the playback sound from all sources.
The function compensates for sound waves dissipated during digital recording compression to approximate the original analog sound. Sound is reproduced with more bits (24 bits) and a wider range of fre
quency (64 kHz, 88.2 kHz or 96 kHz).

Using the sleep timer

When the time you specify elapses, the main unit automatically turns off.
Press [SLEEP].
•Each time you press [SLEEP], the time indicated in the display window changes. You can set the time to 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 or 180 minutes.
Example: Display when the sleep timer is set to 60
minutes.
•Changing the remaining time Press [SLEEP] repeatedly to select the time again.
• Confirming the remaining time Press [SLEEP] once.
•Canceling the sleep timer Press [SLEEP] repeatedly until “SLEEP - -” disappears.
NOTE
•Tu rning off the main unit cancels the sleep timer.

•Each time you press [K2], the display changes as follows.
- “K2 MODE1”: (Normal mode)
Realistically reproduces the sound of the master source.

Basic operations of HDMI CEC

HDMI CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) is an industry standard that enables interoperability between HDMI CEC compliant devices that are connected via HDMI cables. When devices equipped with CEC are connected, each device can control the others. This system is compatible with some basic functions of HDMI CEC.

The playback control panel is displayed. Follow the onscreen display. You can fast forward, rewind or stop the main unit by operating the TV remote control. (In DISC or SD source)

NOTE

Available when DISC, SD, NETWORK source are selected and “HDMI AUDIO OUTPUT” in DIGITAL IN source is set to “AUTO”.

Changes the volume of the unit. (System Audio Control)
NOTE
Select “AUTO” in “HDMI AUDIO OUTPUT” to adjust the System Audio Control.
•Only available on TVs compatible with System Audio Control.
•To use System Audio Control, insert the audio output of the TV to the DIGITAL IN of this unit. The other audio input cannot be used. (Refer to “Connecting other digital audio devices” on page 10).
• When System Audio Control is set to OFF on TV, the main unit does not output the sou
nd.
• If the input of the TV is switched to the other device when System Audio Control is used, this
unit automatically switches to the DIGITAL IN source.
• If the HDMI terminal connected to the main unit is selected as the input of the TV, the source
changes to DISC automatically. However, if the main unit is SD or NETWORK, the source does not change.
• When an amplifier or selector is connected, this unit ma When System Audio Control is not in use, set the “HDMI AUDIO OUTPUT” to either “OFF” or “ON”.

NOTE

• When you select the main unit as the source of the TV, picture and sound from the main unit are automatically produced.
• When you tu automatically turns off. (This function works when “ON1” is selected for “CONTROL WITH HDMI” in the preference screen. Refer to page 53)
•As long as the connected TV is compatible, you can
use the operations of the TV to start playback, adjust the volume and operate other functions on
the main unit.
•If you change the menu language on TV when the main unit is turned on, the main automatically. (If the main unit is turned off, it does not change the menu language automatically even though you changed the menu language on TV and turn the main unit again.)
• The device may not function normally when
amplifiers or selectors are connected. In this case, set “CONTROL WITH HDMI” to “OFF”.
•Not all HDMI devices are compatible with CEC. If the main unit is connected to non-CEC compatible devices, these devices cannot be controlled using the CEC function.
• We do not guarantee the operation of this unit with all HDMI CEC-compatible devices.
Some HDMI CEC-compatible devices may have different functions installed due to the device specifications. Therefore, not all interface functions with the main unit will be activated. (For details, refer to the ins devices.)
• The connected devices may not function as intended. In this case, set “CONTROL WITH HDMI” to “OFF”.

CAUTION
• If the power cable is not connected to an AC outlet, the CEC function does not work, even when the main unit is connected to CEC devices.
• The CEC function may not work depending on the settings or status of the main unit or the connected CEC devices.
• If the CEC function does not operate appropriately, perform the following operation to allow the main unit to recognize the connected devices properly.
1. Turn off and on the power of the main unit
while the power of the TV remains turned on.
2. Turn CONTROL WITH HDMI on the setting
menu of the main unit to “OFF”. Then set it to ON1 again.
(Settings for “CONTROL WITH HDMI” are “ON1” or “ON2”. Refer to “CONNECTION SETTING” on page
53)
3. Turn off this unit and the TV.

Suitable locations for the main unit

To minimize the need for servicing and maintain the high quality of this system, do not place the main unit in the following locations:

Condensation

Under the following conditions, you may not be able to operate this system properly due to condensation formed on the lens of the main unit:
• When you have just started an air conditioner to warm your room
• When you have placed the main unit at an area with high humidity
• When you have moved the main unit from a cold place to a warm place
When condensation forms, leave the main unit turned on, wait for approximately 1 or 2 hours, and then operate the main unit.

Cleaning the main unit

When the operation panel becomes dirty, dust it with a soft dry cloth. When the operation panel is very dirty, wipe it with a cloth dampened with a small amount of a neutral detergent, and then wipe it with a soft dry cloth.

Unplayable discs

The following discs cannot be played back:
• DVD-ROM (except for MP3/WMA/JPEG/DivX format), DVD-RAM, CD-ROM, CD-I (CD-I Ready), Photo CD, SACD, etc.
•Playing back these discs will generate noise and damage the speakers.
•Damaged discs and discs in an extraordinary shape (other than a disc of 12 cm or 8 cm in diameter) cannot be played back.
• JVC does not guarantee the opera quality of discs not authorized by CD-DA, which is a CD specification. Before playback, confirm that the disc complies with this CD specification by checking the marks and reading notes printed on the package.
