GENERAL GUIDELINESPROCEDURE 1
SAFETY/HANDLING OF WHEELCHAIRS
“Safety and Handling” of the wheelchair requires the close attention of the wheelchair user as well
as the assistant. This manual points out the most common procedures and techniques involved in
the safe operation and maintenance of the wheelchair. It is important to practice and master these
safe techniques until you are comfortable in maneuvering around the frequently encountered
architectural barriers. Use this information only as a “basic” guide. The techniques that are discussed on the following pages have been used successfully by many.
Individual wheelchair users often develop skills to deal with daily living activities that may differ
from those described in this manual. Invacare Top End recognizes and encourages each individual
to try what works best for him/her in overcoming architectural obstacles that they may encounter, however, ALL WARNINGS and CAUTIONS given in this manual MUST be followed. Techniques in this manual are a starting point for the new wheelchair user and assistant with “safety” as
the most important consideration for all.
STABILITY AND BALANCE
GENERAL GUIDELINES
GENERAL GUIDELINES
ALWAYS wear your seat positioning strap. Inasmuch as the SEAT POSITIONING STRAP is an option on this wheelchair (You may order with or
without the seat positioning strap), Invacare Top End strongly recommends
ordering the seat positioning strap as an additional safeguard for the wheelchair user.
The seat positioning strap is a positioning belt only. It is not designed for use
as a safety device withstanding high stress loads such as auto or aircraft safety
belts. If signs of wear appear, belt MUST be replaced immediately.
Anti-tippers MUST BE attached at all times. Inasmuch as the ANTI-TIPPERS
are an option on this wheelchair (You may order with or without the antitippers), Invacare strongly recommends ordering the anti-tippers as an additional safeguard for the wheelchair user.
Anti-tippers MUST be used at all times. when outdors on wet, soft ground or
on gravel surfaces, anti-tippers may not provide the same level of protection
against tip over. Extra caution MUST be observed when traversing such
surfaces.
To assure stability and proper operation of your wheelchair, you must at all times wear your seat
positioning strap and maintain proper balance. Your wheelchair has been designed to remain upright
and stable during normal daily activities as long as you do not move beyond the center of gravity.
Virtually all activities which involve movement in the chair have an effect on the center of gravity.
Invacare Top End recommends using seat positioning straps for additional safety while involved in
activities that shift your weight.
DO NOT lean forward out of the chair any further than stability will allow. Make sure the caster
is pointing in the forward position whenever you lean forward. This can be achieved by advancing
the chair and then reversing it in a straight line.
WARNING
Part No. 105491613T-3™ and T-4™ Series
COPING WITH EVERYDAY OBSTACLES
Coping with the irritation of everyday obstacles can be alleviated somewhat by learning how to manage your
wheelchair. Keep in mind your center of gravity to maintain stability and balance.
A NOTE TO WHEELCHAIR ASSISTANTS
When assistance to the wheelchair user is required, remember to use good body mechanics. Keep your
back straight and bend your knees whenever tilting the chair or traversing curbs, or other impediments.
DO NOT attempt to lift the wheelchair by on any removable (detachable)
parts. Lifting by means of any removable (detachable) parts of a wheelchair
may result in injury to the user or damage to the wheelchair.
Also, be aware of any removable (detachable) parts. These must NEVER be used for hand-hold or lifting
supports, as they may be inadvertently released, resulting in possible injury to the user and/or assistant(s).
GENERAL GUIDELINES
When learning a new assistance technique, have an experienced assistant help you before attempting it
alone.
PERCENTAGE OF WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION
GENERAL GUIDELINESPROCEDURE 1
WARNING
WARNING
DO NOT attempt to reach objects if you have to move forward in the seat or
pick them up from the floor by reaching down between your knees.
Many activities require the wheelchair owner to reach, bend and transfer in
and out of the wheelchair. These movements will cause a change to the normal balance, the center of gravity, and the weight distribution of the wheelchair. To determine and establish your particular safety limits, practice bending, reaching and transferring activities in several combinations in the presence of a qualified health professional BEFORE attempting active use of the
wheelchair.
Proper positioning is essential for your safety. When reaching, leaning, bending or bending forward, the front caster can act as a tool to maintain stability
and balance.
The position of the footrest, camber tube and rear seat height, the tautness of
the back upholstery, as well as the user's condition are directly related to the
chairs stability. Any change to one (1) or any combination of the five (5) may
cause the chair to decrease in stability. Use EXTREME caution when using a
new seating position.

desired object. Point front caster forward to
create the longest possible wheelbase. Reach
back only as far as your arm will extend without
changing your sitting position.
GENERAL GUIDELINES
GENERAL GUIDELINES
TILTING
DO NOT tilt the chair without assistance.
When tilting the wheelchair, an assistant should grasp the back of the chair on a non-removable
(non-detachable) part. Inform the chair occupant before tilting the chair and remind him/her to
lean back. Be sure the occupant’s feet and hands are clear of all wheels.
Tilting - Curbs.
Invacare Top End does not recommend that these sport chairs be used where
traversing curbs present an obstacle. Possible injury to occupant and/or
assistant(s) can occur. Transfer to an everyday use chair is recommended if
any such obstacles may be encountered.
After mastering the techniques of tilting the chair, use this procedure to tackle curbs, short stairs, etc.
Unless the first assistant has exceptional upper body strength, it is recommended that two (2) assis-
tants perform this operation. The second assistant should be positioned at the front of the wheelchair
lifting upward on a non-removable (non-detachable) part of the wheelchair frame when lifting the
wheelchair and stabilizing the wheelchair when the wheelchair is being lowered to the ground.
The first assistant should stand on the sidewalk and turn the chair so that the rear wheels are against the
curb. The wheelchair should be tilted back to the balance point and, in one continuous movement, the
rear wheels should be pulled up and over the curb. DO NOT return the front caster to the ground
until the chair back has been pulled backward far enough to clear the edge of the curb.

STAIRWAYS
ALWAYS wear your seat positioning strap. Inasmuch as the SEAT POSITIONING STRAP is an option on this wheelchair (You may order with or
without the seat positioning strap), Invacare Top End strongly recommends
ordering the seat positioning strap as an additional safeguard for the wheelchair user.
Invacare Top End does not recommend these wheelchairs be transported up
or down stairways with occupant in the wheelchair. Possible injury to occupant and/or assistant(s) can occur. Transfer to an everyday use wheelchair is
recommended.
DO NOT attempt to lift the wheelchair by on any removable (detachable)
parts. Lifting by means of any removable (detachable) parts of a wheelchair
may result in injury to the user or damage to the wheelchair.
Extreme caution is advised when it is necessary to move an occupied wheelchair up or down a stairway. Invacare Top End recommends that, if possible,
the user be removed from the chair prior to moving. Invacare Top End recommends using two (2) assistants and making thorough preparations. Make
sure to use ONLY secure, non-detachable parts for hand-hold supports.
WARNING
Part No. 105491617T-3™ and T-4™ Series
Follow this procedure for moving the chair between floors when an elevator is NOT available:
1. After the chair has been tilted back to the balance point, one assistant (in the rear) backs
the chair up against the first step, while securely grasping a non-removable (non-detachable) part of the chair for leverage.
2. The second assistant, with a firm hold on a non-detachable part of the framework, lifts
the chair up and over the stair and steadies the wheelchair as the first assistant places
one (1) foot on the next stair and repeats STEP 1.
3. The wheelchair should not be lowered until the last stair has been negotiated and the
wheelchair has been rolled away from the stairway.
DO NOT use an escalator to move a wheelchair between floors. Serious
bodily injury may occur.
GENERAL GUIDELINES
TRANSFERRING TO AND FROM OTHER SEATS
BEFORE attempting to transfer in or out of the wheelchair, every precaution
should be taken to reduce the gap distance. Align the front caster parallel to
the object you are transferring onto. Also be certain the wheel locks are
engaged to help prevent the wheels from moving.
GENERAL GUIDELINESPROCEDURE 1
GENERAL GUIDELINES
ESCALATORS? SORRY!
WARNING
CAUTION
When transferring, position yourself as far back as possible in the seat. This
will prevent damaged upholstery and the possibility of the chair tipping forward.
NOTE: This activity may be performed independently provided you have adequate mobility and upper body strength.
Position the chair as close as possible along side the
seat to which you are transferring, with the front
caster parallel to it. Engage wheel locks (if applicable).
Shift body weight into seat with transfer.
During independent transfer, little or no seat platform
will be beneath you. Use a transfer board if at all possible.

A NOTE ABOUT QUICK-RELEASE CASTERS
Quick-release casters are an option that allow for quick and easy removal of the casters from the
wheelchair so the wheelchair can be stored and transported conveniently. When using the quickrelease caster option, a spring loaded caster head tube cap will be used instead of a stem nut to
secure the front caster to the chair frame. Unlike the stem nut, the caster head tube cap is not
adjustable and thus caster flutter will be more evident with the quick-release caster option than it
would be with the standard caster attaching hardware.
1. Remove the bolt and locknut that secure the front caster and the two (2) spacers to the fork.
2. Remove the dust cover on the top of the head tube.
3. While holding the fork and using a socket wrench, remove the locknut that secures the
fork, and spacer in the headtube of the wheelchair.
NOTE: The dust cover and locknut are not used with the quick-release casters. Keep them for future
use.
4. Remove the existing fork and install the quick-release caster fork through the head tube of the
wheelchair making sure the fork stem is approximately 1/4-inch above the caster head tube.
WARNING
Make sure the detent pin of the quickrelease caster headtube cap is fully
released BEFORE operating the
wheelchair.
5. Depress the detent pin of the quickrelease caster headtube cap and install
over the top of the quick-release caster
fork stem.
