Operation
Operation
Operational instructions are divided into three main categories. The first category includes details required for the initial setup and operation for a new system installation, or if changes have been made to an existing system. The second category includes operational details for routine tests of an existing system. The third category includes instructions to facilitate advanced capabilities that are not generally required in most applications. Display images associated with these instructions may be found in the Display portion of this manual. The corresponding image number(s) is listed after each step number [in brackets] that pertains to a display.
- INITIAL OPERATION
1. Switch OFF the AC mains (and/or DC power) to the SC-9216R using the power switch located on the front
panel. As a precaution, the system amplifier(s) should be switched OFF as well.
2. Terminate the amplifier output wires to an available channel on the SC-9216R via the screw terminals marked
“AMP IN”. Be sure to observe polarity (+/-) throughout the termination process.
3. Terminate the speaker input wires to the terminals on the SC-9216R marked “AMP OUT” which correspond to
the desired amplifier channel. After these steps are completed, other system electronics may be switched ON and the system operated normally. The SC-9216R will function properly with the amplifier(s) and/or other system components switched OFF or ON.
4. Position the Channel Check switches in the desired position for each channel of the SC-9216R. The UP (OFF)
position means the channel will not be checked. The DOWN (ON) position means that the channel will be checked.
5. Switch ON the AC mains to the SC-9216R. The display will flash the product description three times and then
indicate the Test Interval and time remaining until the next automatic test. In the event that an automatic test occurs before step 6 see 5A. 5a. Do not interrupt a test. If the test completes without triggering a fault display or buzzer sound, proceed
with step 6. If a fault is found or the buzzer sounds, see step 5B.
5b. The BUZZER OFF button may be used anytime after the buzzer sound is no longer constant. The fault
indicator and associated Buzzer sound is in response to one or more channels testing differently than the previously stored setting. Since the SC-9216R has not been set up for the system as currently configured, the fault indication does not necessarily mean a fault exists. Proceed with step 6 once the test is complete and FAULT FOUND is displayed.
6. Depress the OP MODE button several times to navigate to the MEMORY CLEAR display. Depress ENTER to
clear all previously stored settings. The display will indicate the test interval has been reset to 1 hour (the factory default), followed by the product description, and also shows the time remaining until the next test.
7. Depress the OP MODE button as needed to navigate to one of the four ALL STORE modes that most closely
represent the system configuration, then Depress ENTER. The SC-9216R will automatically cycle through each channel to establish a reference value for each channel. A clicking sound may be heard as the unit cycles through each channel (relays opening and closing). Once completed, the Test interval and time remaining until the next test will be indicated on the display.
8. Once the test interval and time remaining until the next test is indicated on the display, the test interval may be
changed as described in step 9.
8
SC-9216R
SPEAKER LINE CHECKER
9. Depress the OP MODE button several times to navigate to the TEST INTERVAL SET display. Set a new Test
Interval using the four CURSOR buttons and then depress ENTER. The new Test Interval time will be indicated on the display. The display will then change to reveal the time remaining until the next test. Maximum time is 24 hours, minimum time is 1 minute. The default setting is 1 hour.
10. The SC-9216R will conduct a test automatically according to the Test Interval setting as indicated on the
display screen. The test will result in either “normal” or “fault found”. If all channels tested normally, the product will display the Test Interval screen and begin the count down until the next test. If one or more faults were identified in the test, these will be indicated in the display as described in step 11.
11. The Fault (or problem) associated with any channel(s) which failed the test will be indicated in the display
along with a recommendation to have the channel(s) serviced. This Fault display mode will remain in effect until the next automatic test sequence or until the Op Mode button is depressed. All displays except for the fault display will eventually return to the test Interval display.
- ROUTINE OPERATION
Operating an existing system.
1. Switch ON the AC mains to the SC-9216R using the POWER button on the front panel. The display will flash
the product description three times and then indicate the time remaining until the next automatic test. The SC9216R will function properly with the amplifier(s) and/or other system components OFF or ON. Other system electronics may be switched ON and the sound system will operate normally whether or not the SC-9216R is switched ON.
2. A clicking sound may be heard as a test is conducted on each channel. This sound is normal (caused by
relays sequencing) and is not a cause for concern.
3. If all channels test normally the display will indicate the time remaining until the next test.
4. If a fault is detected on one or more channels the Fault indicator will illuminate, the Buzzer will sound, and the
display will indicate “Fault Found”. The Buzzer will sound continuously for the remainder of the test and then will cycle on/off repeatedly once the test is complete. At this time the BUZZER may be switched off using the BUZZER OFF button.
5. The Fault (or problem) associated with any channel(s) which failed the test will be indicated in the display
along with a recommendation to have the channel(s) serviced. This Fault display mode will remain in affect until either the next automatic test or until the Op Mode button is depressed. All displays except for the fault display will eventually return to the display that indicates the time remaining until the next test.
6. Steps 2-4 will repeat automatically according to how the Time Interval has been set. See step 8 in the Initial
Operation instructions to change the Time Interval.
7. The SC-9216R may be switched OFF (and back ON again) at anytime without affecting system performance.
- ADVANCED OPERATION
This section assumes and requires that the reader clearly understands both the Initial Operation and the Routine Operation instruction.
SC-9216R Advanced Overview Reference Parameters The SC-9216R has the ability to “look” at a speaker system (or load), check the impedance on the line, and store that impedance as a reference value to compare against future impedance tests. The reference impedance may not agree with other “outside” impedance measurements or calculations for a variety of reasons, but most importantly because the SC-9216R conducts the measurements at approximately 15kHz which normally is not the frequency used to determine the impedance of a loudspeaker. The test voltage is 5 Volts and of a duration of
9
SC-9216R
SPEAKER LINE CHECKER
less than 100ms. Because the test volume is relatively low, and the duration so short, the test is very subtle (generally inaudible) and may be performed while the system is in use.
Reference values are established by depressing the Op Mode button several times until the desired “Save” options are displayed, then depressing the ENTER button. These options include menus that allow ALL channels to be changed at once or a SINGLE channel to be changed individually without affecting the settings of other channels. The act of establishing a Reference value deletes the previously stored Reference as does activating the Memory Clear function. Options include a choice between W or Z and 70V or 100V. One must be selected but the selection may be done arbitrarily in most applications. The Z selection was primarily provided to facilitate possible future product upgrade capabilities. The 70V and 100V selections allow displayed impedance values to be compared with system documentation or used in creating “as builts”. A wide deviation may occur in such comparisons and is generally not cause for concern. Either the 70V or 100V selection may be used with 25V or 140V systems but the impedance displayed will deviate significantly from published system component documentation. Test reliability will not be affected.
Be sure to only store reference values when the speaker channel or system is properly configured. If for example, an “open circuit” is stored as the reference, then the test will not identify an open circuit as a problem.
Speaker Attenuators. Use of speaker attenuators (or volume controls) in a speaker line will result in a change in impedance with changes in attenuation settings. This impedance change may result in a Fault indication on the SC-9216R and the SC-9116R (expander). The following actions are recommended when a speaker attenuator is on the line.
These instructions apply to channels in which changes to an attenuator is permitted and should not result in a Fault indicator.
1. Verify that the speaker channel is operating normally.
2. Adjust the attenuator to the minimum attenuation position.
3. Save the current condition of this channel as the Reference value. Single channels may be saved without
saving all channels at once.
4. Switch the channel check switch to the OFF position for this channel only. This switch will be found on the
rear of the SC-9216R/SC-9116R.
5. Return the attenuator to the desired operating position and continue with normal operation.
6. This channel will not be checked while the switch remains in the OFF position.
7. The channel may be checked by adjusting the attenuator to the minimum attenuation position and switching
ON the channel check selector.
These instructions apply to channels in which changes to an attenuator is not permitted and should result in a Fault indicator.
1. Verify that the speaker channel is operating normally.
2. Adjust the attenuator to the desired position for normal operation.
3. Save the current condition of this channel as the Reference value. Single channels may be saved without
saving all channels at once.
4. Subsequent changes to the attenuator will indicate a Fault. It is possible that opposing changes to two or more
attenuators could net the same impedance as the reference impedance and the changes not be detected. See Fault Criteria.
