The Portable Case
Please read these important tips and keep them for future reference.
Your Platinum ID Portable Case is molded of a high-impact material that will provide years of
operation and still maintain its good appearance. To clean the case, use a mild soap, liquid
detergent, or household cleaners (such as Fantastic or Formula 409). Do not use an abrasive
cleaner (such as Comet) or chemical cleaners (such as paint thinner or Acetone) as these will
damage the finish.
As with any electronic instrument, never leave your Platinum ID Portable on the dash or rear
deck area of a car or truck.
Periodically check the brass terminal strips located in both battery compartments of the lower
case. Deposits or oxidation can cause a faulty power connection and interfere with the
performance of your unit. Gently wiping the strips occasionally with fine steel wool will ensure
good connection. Never attempt to remove the strips from the case, as doing so will damage
them.
Case Setup
The only tool needed to complete the installation of the Platinum ID Portable is a phillips head
screwdriver.
Your new Platinum ID Portable case incorporates the Humminbird All-in-One Mounting and
Connector system, where all cable connections are a part of the mounting bracket.
Follow these simple steps to attach the cables to the bracket:
Open the portable case cover to its highest position and gently pull the cover toward the front of
the unit to release it from the lower case. Grasp the top rear of the mounting bracket and pull
toward you, to its full vertical position.
Locate the connector hardware kit (the smaller of the two hardware bags). The illustration on the
hardware bag shows the proper orientation of the various cables into the connector. The power
cable (identified by a “1” on the plug) is prewired to the battery compartments of the portable
case. Insert this plug into the connector port labeled “1”. Insert the plug from your
sensor/transducer (identified by a “2” on the plug) into the connector port labeled “2”. Ports 3 and
4 are for trolling speed and water temperature accessories, should you choose to purchase them.
Now assemble the connector and connector cover to the mounting bracket with two screws as
shown below, making sure that the cables come out through the slots at the bottom of the cover.
Be careful not to over-tighten the screws.
Installing the Platinum ID
Install the Platinum ID unit onto the mounting bracket by aligning the bracket with the latch cover
on the rear of the unit and sliding firmly downward until the unit is fully seated. When properly
installed, all connections will be made automatically and the unit cannot be pulled off its mount
without first depressing the latch. The unit may now be tilted to the best viewing angle. The
rubber feet on the outside of the case will help prevent slipping or skidding when adjusting the
viewing angle.
The Platinum ID Portable is designed to use two 6-volt lantern batteries with the spring-type
terminals. Any type of 6-volt lantern battery may be used. However, for maximum battery life we
recommend using heavy-duty alkaline batteries.
The actual life of a set of batteries can vary greatly depending on the type of batteries, the
temperature, and use of the backlight. At temperatures above 70 degrees, with a new set of
heavy-duty alkaline batteries, and without using the backlight, you can expect about 65 hours of
operation. As the temperature decreases, battery life will also decrease. If possible, keep the
batteries warm during use to maximize their life.
Installing the Batteries
To install the batteries, first remove the two battery covers located on each side of the lower
case. To do this, grasp the front of the cover by the handle provided and lift upward to release, as
shown below. Orient the batteries as shown and insert them into the battery compartments,
making sure that the spring terminals make good contact with the brass terminal strips and that
the batteries are fully seated. Replace the battery covers by first inserting the tab at the rear of
the cover into the slot in the lower case, then pushing down on the front of the cover. The cover
will snap into place, and battery installation is complete.
The Platinum ID Portable battery compartments have been designed to accept commercially
available batteries with an overall height within industry tolerance. However, some batteries may
be slightly shorter, preventing the spring terminals from contacting the brass terminal strips in the
lower case. Should this occur, stretch the spring terminals slightly so that they contact the brass
terminal strips in the lower case.
Assembling the Portable Sensor
Your Platinum ID Portable Case inc ludes all the necessary hardware to convert your Platinum
ID sensor/transducer for portable installations. Assembly instructions for the Platinum ID 120
sensor are included below, and instructions for the Platinum ID 600 transducer are on the
following page. The assembly of your portable sensor or transducer is shown in the illustrations
provided.
Platinum ID 120 Sensor Assembly
Position the bracket with washers on each side of the mounting holes between the mounting
ears on the sensor. Next, insert the thumbscrew through the entire assembly and install the flat
washer and wing nut on the thumb screw. This design allows for sensor angle adjustment without
the need for tools. Next, attach the rubber suction cup to the bracket with the Phillips head screw
as shown. Be careful not to over-tighten the screw. Unwind the cable and adjust the sensor so
that it is at a 90-degeree angle to the bracket. Your portable sensor is now ready for installation.
Assembling the Portable Transducer
Position the bracket and tooth washers between the mounting “ears” of the transducer.
Then, insert the thumbscrew through the entire assembly and attach the flat washer and wing nut
on the thumbscrew. This design allows you to adjust the transducer angle without tools. Attach
the bracket to the suction cup with the Phillips head screw, being careful not to over tighten the
screw. Unwind the cable and adjust the transducer so that it is at a 90-degree angle to the
bracket. Your portable transducer is now ready for installation.
Mounting the Sensor/Transducer
It is important that the sensor/transducer be mounted on the transom where water flow is
in constant contact with the sensor/transducer. You may want to observe the rear of the boat
while it is moving through the water to determine the best mounting location. Optimal location for
mounting is an area on the transom which provides a smooth, flat surface for the suction cup
while keeping the sensor/transducer in contact with the water at all times.
First, unwind the cable and position the sensor/transducer as shown below with respect
to the bracket and tighten the thumbscrew. Next, attach the suction cup to the transom, making
sure that the bottom of the sensor/transducer is below the bottom of the boat; the top of the
sensor/transducer must remain above the bottom of the transom. The suction cup will stick
equally well above or below the water line. Dampening the suction cup by dipping it in hot water
before installation will give a better hold on a dry surface. The upper tip of the sensor/transducer
bracket is designed to hold the suction cup onto the boat at idle or low speeds. Do not use the
upper tip as a handle to remove the suction cup.
Securing the Sensor/Transducer
Caution: Tie-down the sensor/transducer cable holder, as shown above, to ensure that if
the suction cup comes loose the sensor/transducer will not be damaged by the propeller,
thrown into the boat, or pull the unit out of the boat. Humminbird is not responsible for
any damage due to the suction cup coming loose.
The portable sensor/transducer can also be used without the suction cup if you have a
fiberglass boat with a single hull. The sensor/transducer should be placed in a small amount of
water inside the hull of the boat so that the sensor/transducer can shoot through the hull. The
water must be in direct contact with the boat hull and there cannot be any air between the bottom
of the sensor/transducer and the hull of the boat. When operating at high speeds, some boat hulls
will create turbulence (bubbles) that will interfere with the operation of the Platinum ID.
When you’re finished using the Platinum ID Portable, wrap the cable around the suction
cup and place the transducer in the “nest” between the battery compartments of the portable
case.
