This manual describes how to set up the HP multimedia keyboard and
configure the following operating systems supported by HP:

Setting Up Your HP Multimedia Keyboard
1Shut down your PC and connect the HP multimedia keyboard to the PC.
Your PC’s audio connection panel may differ from the own shown here.
Color-coding is used on some PC’s to aid connection. Refer to your PC’s
User’s Guide for more information.
Microphone
NOTE
Speakers/headphones
When you connect the keyboard jack to the rear of the PC, the PC’s internal
speaker, where fitted, is deactivated. You can then connect headphones or
speakers to the rear of the keyboard to have sound (go to the next step).

NOTE
To avoid discomfort from unexpected noise, always turn the volume down
before connecting headphones or speakers.
Listening to loud sounds for prolonged periods may permanently damage
your hearing. Before putting on headphones, place them around your neck
and turn the volume down. When you put on the headphones, slowly
increase the volume until you find a comfortable listening level, and leave
the volume control in that position.
2Connect the microphone and headphones/speakers to the keyboard.
The speakers and microphone shown here are not supplied with your PC.

Windows NT 4.0
& Windows 2000
Your PC may have a CD-ROM or DVD drive. Although these drives may have
a headphones socket and a volume control, use the keyboard sockets as
described in this section. This will ensure that you use all your PC’s
multimedia features.
Installing the Keyboard Support Software
1Insert the first HP Multimedia Keyboard software CD-ROM that
corresponds to your operating system, into your CD-ROM drive.
2From Windows Explorer (or Windows NT Explorer for NT 4.0) double click on
the CD-ROM Drive (typically the D:).
3Double click on Setup.exe to begin installation.
4Follow the on screen instructions and insert other disks as prompted.

Improper and prolonged use of keyboards and input devices are among
those tasksassociated with repetitive strain injury (RSI) to soft tissue in the
hands and arms. If you do experience discomfort or pains while using any
computing equipment, discontinue use immediately and consult your

The HP multimedia keyboard includes soft keys you can use to:
•
Display and configure the actions assigned to keys.
•
Perform one-touch shortcuts to start applications, open files, or open
sites on the WWW.
•
Launch the Internet browser supplied with your system.
•
Lock your PC or PC Workstation.
•Access HP TopTools and customer information.
•Mute or adjust the volume of the audio system.

Windows Key
You can display the Windows 95 Start menu by pressing either of the two
Windows keys, positioned to the left and right of the space bar.
Application KeyYou can access all right-mouse button functions used to copy and move files,
display shortcut menus, and get Help information, by pressing the Application
key. The Application key can also be programmed by your software.

“Power-on”
Function
Note that the “Power-on” function only works on HP PCs that support this
function.
You can switch on your PC by pressing the space bar. You can enable and
disable the “Power-on” function from your PC’s Setup program (the default
is enabled). Please refer to the description of the Setup program in your
PC’s documentation.
Mail KeyYou can launch your default mail client by pressing this key. For MAPI-
based mail clients like Microsoft Outlook, the LED above this key blinks
when new mail is received. When the LED blinks, simply press the mail key
to view the newly arrived mail.
Shortcut KeysThe shortcut soft keys can be used to start an application, open a
document, or open a site on the Internet. Actions can be assigned to the
shortcut keys by pressing the Menu key and clicking the key you want to
configure in the keyboard displayed on your screen.
HP TopToolsPressing this soft key opens HPTopTools on PCs that come with this
application. HP TopTools helps you manage your PC, reduce overall
ownership costs, and provides advanced PC management tools. For
example, it can be used for remote BIOS updates and security
management.
NOTE
Before using HP TopTools for the first time on HP preloaded systems, you
must install it as follows: From the Start menu, select Programs, then
HP DMI, then Setup. The HP TopTools application is installed automatically.
Internet KeyThis soft key is used to start the Web browser configured on your computer.
Menu Key
Pressing the ? Menu soft key displays the soft key section of the HP
multimedia keyboard on your screen. Click any of the keys on the screen to
display the action assigned to an individual key or to change or assign an
action to a key. Shortcut keys are provided specifically for user-defined
actions.
Lock KeyThe action of the Lock key is configured by pressing the Menu Key, and
then clicking on Configure, the Extended Keys tab and the onscreen Lock
button. With HP Lock installed, the actions you can specify for the Lock key
are:

Lock the front panel.

This soft key accesses HP Customer Information, which includes:
•Information on product features
•The preloaded software on the system
•Details on how to configure the HP multimedia keyboard
•Information on how to configure the WWW browser
•Detailed HP support information

Links to the HP PC and PC Workstation Web sites.

The Euro Symbol
Mute and Volume
Keys
Pressing the Mute key mutes the audio, or restores the audio if it has been
muted. The Volume keys can be used to control the volume level.
The Euro Symbol
This section only applies if your keyboard comes with the Euro symbol key
(only available with certain language models).
Your keyboard’s Euro symbol key can only be used with Operating Systems
and applications that support this feature.
•Only the latest operating systems, such as Windows 98, provide
integrated support for the Euro symbol (in certain languages only).
•
Not all applications support the Euro symbol.
•
Not all fonts contain the Euro character.
Windows NT 4.0&
Windows 95
Windows 98Windows 98 has all the necessary fonts and built-in drivers to use the euro
Windows 2000Windows 2000 provides integrated support.
Configuring Your
Keyboard
Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 95 do not provide integrated support. For
more information on how to enable support of the Euro symbol, refer to
Microsoft’s web site at:
www.microsoft.com/windows/euro.asp
symbol, provided that the user's peripherals (such as printers) were
designed to work with the euro. Printer fonts that support the euro symbol
include Times New Roman, Arial, and Courier New.
To configure your keyboard, go to Settings > Control Panel in the Start menu.
Double-click on Keyboard and select the Language or Input Locales tab in the
Keyboard Properties window. Click on Add and select the country that
corresponds with your keyboard, and click OK. Click OK to exit the ControlPanel.
