Performance Summary
Abstract: On January 5, 1999 Compaq announced availability of the
450MHz Pentium II Xeon processor on the ProLiant 5500. The ProLiant
5500 is the standard for performance and value in the enterprise for large
departmental and enterprise customers requiring an affordable, high
performance general purpose server. The performance of the ProLiant
5500 with 450MHz Pentium II Xeon is demonstrated by the industrystandard ServerBench 4.01 benchmarks.
ProLiant 5500 with 450MHz
Pentium II Xeon Delivers Faster
Performance
The ProLiant 5500 server offers 450MHz Pentium II processors
linked by a 100MHz GTL Bus to provide up to 50% faster access to
memory. The Compaq Netelligent 10/100 TX embedded UTP
controller provides high performance network throughput with
autosensing capability and full duplex Ethernet support.
When comparing the peaks, the new 450MHz Pentium II Xeonbased ProLiant 5500 improves upon the previous generation of
400MHz/512KB Pentium II Xeon-based ProLiant 5500 by:
• 9% with four 450/512KB processors
• 24% with four 450/1MB processors
• 42% with four 450/2MB processors
On average over 1-28 clients, the new 450MHz Pentium II Xeonbased ProLiant 5500 improves upon the previous generation of
400MHz/512KB Pentium II Xeon-based ProLiant 5500 by:
• 9% with four 450/512KB processors
• 22% with four 450/1MB processors
• 32% with four 450MHz/2MB processors
ProLiant 5500 ServerBench Performance Summary 2
ServerBench 4.01 under Windows Advanced Server 4.0
ServerBench 4.01 Benchmark
Overview
ServerBench 4.01 measures the performance of application servers in a client/server
environment by running tests that produce different types of load on the server. The ServerBench
test environment includes the server being tested, its PC clients, and a PC designated as the
controller (test suites are executed and monitored from the controller).
ServerBench 4.01 is an important industry-standard benchmark used by several computer vendors
to simulate application server performance. Ziff-Davis Benchmark Operation (ZDBop), a
division of the Ziff-Davis Publishing Company, develops and supports the publicly available,
core benchmark programs that all ZD publications use, including NetBench and ServerBench.
Interpreting the Results
The Compaq ProLiant 5500 with 450MHz Pentium II Xeon processors delivers improved
performance over the Compaq ProLiant 5500 with 400MHz Pentium II Xeon processors for
environments with up to 28 clients.1 This configuration demonstrates the extra value that larger
L2 cache can play in improving server performance.
