Abstract: This document focuses on the steps necessary for the
successful installation of Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0
and Service Pack 6 on Compaq
V300 portable products. The steps outlined provide a complete
installation procedure that works regardless of the currently installed
operating system.
For details on Compaq’s overall operating system strategy, operating
system features, and the installation of additional Service Packs,
please refer to the

This document is intended for Compaq personnel and customers
needing information on installing Microsoft Windows NT
Workstation 4.0, Service Pack 6, and applicable programs on

Introduction
This White Paper discusses installing Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 with Service Pack
6 on selected Compaq Armada portable products. The document provides basic instructions for
the installation process. The data on the file s conta ined in this Whi te Paper is cur ren t as of the
publication date. Please refer to
most current files.
Note:
Back up all data and applications prior to installing Microsoft Windows NT
Workstation 4.0.

Before beginning the installation scripts for any of the platforms, obtain the items listed below.
The following items can be obtained directly from Microsoft:
•
Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 CD and the three setup diskettes
•
Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Service Pack 6 CD
•
Microsoft MS-DOS v6.22 Boot Disk or other bootable disk that contains a current FDISK
utility
The following items can be obtained from Compaq:
•
The current ROM available for the platform. See Appendix A for information on determining
the current ROM version and how to update it.
•
The latest Compaq Support Software CD containing all updated drivers and deliverables.
Alternately, the files on the Support Software CD can be obtained from the Compaq website:

IMPORTANT:
Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0. Previous versions may not work or may produce
anomalies.
Have one blank high-density floppy diskette to create a startup disk and up to three additional
blank high-density floppy diskettes before beginning installation.
Obtain the latest version of the drivers and enhancements compatible with

Important Notes
•
Make sure that the system is undocked and no PC Cards are in the PCMCIA slots when
installing the drivers.
•
These SoftPaq numbers are the minimum required for Microsoft Windows NT Workstation

4.0. They may be superseded, as noted on the Compaq website.
•
Do not set up any networking components. Contact the Network Administrators and have
them properly set up the networking portions of Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0.
•
After all of the additional software programs and drivers have been installed, update the
Emergency Repair Disk by running the RDISK program.
Installation of Compaq Drivers and Enhancements
The drivers are grouped into three profile categories:
Basic
•
—Identifies those softw are com ponents that enable all of the internal hardware and
provide functionality in a stand- alone env ironm ent.
Enhanced
•
Full
•
—Provides additional features and support for optional hardware.
—Adds manageability features.
Before proceeding with the installation of the Compaq drivers and enhancements.
•
Install the System ROMpaq, Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0, and Service Pack 6 in
the following order:
•
System ROMpaq
•
Install Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0
•
Install Service Pack 6
Table 1 lists the drivers and enhancements, available as of the publication of this White Paper.
Check the Compaq website for a current list of available drivers and enhancements.

Determining the ROM Version
To determine the ROM revision, use either Compaq’s Inspect utility or Compaq Diagnostics for
Windows. Table 2 shows the minimum required ROM versions.

Appendix B
Docking for the First Time
Before docking, you need to ensure that all of the specific drivers and support software for your
specific Armada have been installed. Please refer to “Installation of Compaq Drivers and
Enhancements” for the list of deliverables and instructions on how to install them.
Compaq strongly recommends a “cold dock” for the user’s first docking under Microsoft
Windows NT Workstation 4.0. Properly shut down the computer by clicking Start→Shut Down.
Select Shut down the computer? and click Yes. If the system requires to be manually turned off,
do so now. Place the computer in the docking station or convenience base and turn on the unit’s
power.
