Overview
The HP Surestore FC 1Gb/2Gb S wi tc h 16 B i s a 16-port Fibre Channel gigabit switch that supp orts
link speeds up to 2 Gbps. Each port automatically negotiates to the highest common speed of all
devices connected to the port. The ports are compatible with SFPs (small form factor pluggable
media), are universal and self-configuring, and are capable of individually becoming an F_Port
(fabric enabled), FL_Port (fabric loop enabled), or an E_Port (expansion port).

1
The FC 16B includes the Brocade Fabric Operating System™ version 3.0.1, and is compatible with
HP’s installed base of Fibre Channel hubs, bridges, and switches. It can operate in a fabric
containing multiple switches or as the only switch in a fabric.
The FC 16B is one rack unit in height, has an air-cooled chassis, and can be set up as a stand-alone
unit or mounted in a 19-inch rack. The FC 16B includes the following:
•16 optical ports, each with two LEDs (light-emitting diodes), one to indicate port status and
one to indicate link speed
•One serial port with an RS-232 connector
•One 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port with an RJ-45 connector
•A “switch power” LED on the SFP media side, indicating whether the switch has power
•A “switch status” LED on the power supply side, indicating the overall status of the switch
•One or two power supplies, with built-in fans and LEDs (if two power supplies are installed,
they are redundant and individually hot-swappable)
•Two fan trays, individually hot-swappable

Figure 1-1 shows the SFP media side of the FC 16B, which contains the serial port, Ethernet port,
fiber optic ports and their corresponding LEDs, and the switch power LED.

The ports of the FC 16B are color-coded in groups, with four purple ports alternating with four
unmarked ports, to indicate which ports can be used in the same ISL Trunking group.
Note:ISL Trunking is a Fabric OS feature that enables distribution of traffic over the combined
bandwidth of up to four ISLs between two directly adjacent switches, while preserving inorder delivery. For information about ISL Tru nking, refer to the ISL T r unking User Guide.
The Power Supply Side
Figure 1-2 shows the power supply side of the FC 16B switch, which provides access to the fan
trays and power supplies and the Switch Status LED. Each power supply also has an LED that
indicates the status of that power supply. The power s upplies, fan tray s, and the en tire switch are all
FRUs (field replaceable units).

Monitoring and Managing the FC 16B
The FC 16B can be managed in-band using Fibre Channel protocol, or out-of-band by connecting
to the Ethernet port. The management functions allow the administrator to monitor fabric topology,
port status, physical status, and other information to aid in system debugging and performance
analysis.
Note:The switch automatically performs POST (power on self-test diagnostics) each time it is
turned on, and any errors are recorded in the error log. For more information about POST ,
see POST Specifications on page A-6.
The FC 16B is compatible with the following management interfaces:

Safety Guidelines
Follow these safety guidelines to ensure successful and safe operation of the switch:
•The supply circuit, line fusing, and wire size must conform to the electrical rating on
the switch nameplate.
•The ambient air temperature near the switch must not exceed 40 degrees Celsius. This
is particularly important to verify if the switch is installed in a closed or multi-rack
assembly.
•The volume of air flow available to the switch must be at least 300 cubic feet per
minute. The air vents must not be blocked.
Follow these safety guidelines for rack-mount installation:
•The rack space must be 1U high, 19 inches wide, and 24 inches deep.
•All equipment installed in the rack should have a reliable branch circuit ground
connection. Do not rely on a connection to a branch circuit, such as a power strip.
•The additional weight of t he s wit ch should not unbalance the r ack or ex ceed the rack’s
weight limits.
•The rack should be mechanically secured to insure stability in the event of an
earthquake.
WARNINGFor safety reasons, when installing this product in an equipment rack, you
must consider rack stability against tipping. Please refer to the Hewlett-P ackard Rack System/E User's Manual provided with the equipment rack to determine rack stability
(also available in electronic format through the HP Web site at

structure before operation.
Package Contents
The major items contai ned in the FC 16B shipping carton(s) include the following it ems:
•One FC 16B switch, two fan trays, and one or two power supplies installed
•One 10 ft. RS-232 serial cable (convertible to an RJ-45 connector through removal of
the adapter on the end of the cable)
•Two 6 ft. power cables (according to the number of power supplies included with the
switch)
•Four rubber mounting feet (used only for setting up the switch as a stand-alone unit)
•Two rails and one bag of rail mounting hardware (required if the switch is to be
installed in a rack):

Installing the Switch as a Stand-Alone Unit
This section provides instructions for setting up the switch as a stand-alone unit on a flat
surface. The following items are required:
•FC 16B
•Power cables
•Rubber mounting feet
T o set up the switch as a stand-alone unit:
1. Check contents of the shipping carton to verify all the required parts and hardware are
available.
2. Apply the rubber feet by completing the following steps:
CAUTIONInstalling the rubber feet on the switch is recommended to help prevent the
switch from accidentally sliding off the supporting surface.
a. Clean the four depressions that are at each corner of the bottom of the switch to ensure
they are free of dust.
b. Place a rubber foo t in each depression, wi th the adhesive si de against the chas sis, and
press into place.
3. Place the switch on a flat, sturdy surface.

4. Provide power to the switch by completing the following steps:
a. Connect the power cable to the FC 16B power supply and to a power outlet. Ensu re
the power cable is routed so that it is not exposed to stress.
b. Turn on the power supply (flip the AC switch to “I”) when ready to supply power to
the switch. The switch autom at i cal ly runs POST (power on self-tes t) eac h ti me it is
turned on.
c. If the FC 16B includes a second power supply, repeat Steps 4a and 4b for the
remaining power supply.
NoteDo not connect the switch to the network until the IP address is correctly set.

rack.

CAUTIONFor proper airflow, the SFP media side of the FC 16B faces the rear of the

of the rack, which is similar to other rack-mounted equipment.

To install the switch in a rack:

1. Check contents of the shipping carton to verify all the required parts and hardware are
available.
2. Choose a mounting location in the rack for the switch.
3. Attach the rear rail-tray brackets to the rear rack uprigh ts by completing one of the
following steps:
– For an HP rack, install each of the two mounting brackets with (1) M5 Torx head
screw with captive lock washers as shown in Figure 2-2.

– For a Compaq/Rittal rack, assemble each of the two brackets with (2) spacers, (2)
M5 flat washers, and (1) M5 Torx head screw with captive lock washers as shown
in Figure 2-3. Note that the al ignment pins will be re sti ng on t h e t op sur fa ces of the
spacers.

4. Install the Tinnerman clips or nuts by completing one of the following steps:
– For an HP rack, i nstall (2) M5 U-type Tinnerman clips for each of t he front columns
of the rack in the top and bottom pos itio ns of the thr ee-hole EI A pattern a s shown in
Figure 2-4.

– For a Compaq/Rittal rack, install (2) #10-32 square Ti nnerman nuts for each of the
front columns of the rack in the top and bottom positions of the three-hole EIA
pattern. Also install (1) spacer in the center position for each column on the front of
the rack. See Figure 2 -5.

5. Assemb le the outer rails by completing the following steps:
a. As an aid in assembly, two rubber washers have be en included to help k eep the rear
slotted portion of the outer rail flush against the rear rail-tray brackets. Install them
as shown in Figure 2-6.

b. Insert the alignmen t pins attached to the outer r ail front flange into t he center opening
in the rack.
NoteFor the Com paq/Rittal rack, the a lignment pins will be resting on the t op
surfaces of the spacers.
c. Depending on the rack you are using, complete one of the following tasks:
– For an HP rack, ins tall one M5 Torx screw in the upper h ole lo catio n of the right
rail. Then, install one M 5 Torx screw i n the lower location of th e left rail. See
Figure 2-7.

– For a Compaq/Rittal rack, install one #10-32 x 5/8 Phillips pan-head screw in
the upper hole location of the right rail. Then, install one #10-32 x 5/8 Phillips
pan-head screw in the lower location o f the left rail.

6. Assemble the two inner rails (one on each side) to the switch using (6) #8-32 x 5/16
Phillips pan-head screws, and #8 flat washer as shown in Figure 2-8.

CAUTIONDo not use any other screws other than the six that are provided. Use of any
longer lengths can cause damage to internal components of the switch. Before tightening
screws, ma ke sure that the rails are centered to the overall height of the switch.
7. Insert the swi tch with the attac hed inner rails i nto the outer rail s. Assemble (2) rema ining
M5 Torx screws to complete th e installatio n. See Figure 2-9.

8. For the Compaq/Rittal rack only, install the remaining #10-32 x 5/8 Phillips pan-head
screws.
9. Provide power to the switch by completing the following steps:
CAUTIONEnsure the power cable or cables are routed so that they are not exposed to
stress when the switch is moved on the slides.

a. Connect the power cable to the FC 16B power supply and to a power outlet.
b. Turn on the power supply (flip the AC switch to “I”) when ready to supply power to

The following items are requi red to configur e and connect the FC 16B for use in a network
and fabric:
•The FC 16B installed and connected to a power source
•Workstation that has a terminal emulator application (such as HyperTerminal)
•Serial cable provided with the switch, for connecting the switch to the workstation
•An unused IP address
•Ethernet cable for connecting the switch to the workstation or to a network containing
the workstation
•SFPs and FC cables, as required to connect the switch to the fabric
To configure the FC 16B and connect it to a fabric:
1. Replace the fact ory IP address a nd related inf ormation with t he IP information p rovided
by your network administrator by completing the following steps:
a. Remove the shipping plug from the serial port and insert the serial cable provided
with the FC 16B.
b. Connect the other end of the serial cable to an RS-232 ser ial port on the workstation.
If no RS-232 serial port i s available on the wor kstation, the adapter on the en d of the
serial cable can be removed to use the RJ -45 conne ctor t o creat e a seri al conn ecti on.
c. Verify that the switch power is on and POST is completed.
d. Disable any serial communication programs running on the workstation.
e. Open a terminal emulator application (such as Hype rTerminal on a PC, or TERM in
a UNIX environment), and configure as follows:

2. Record the IP address for future re ference.
3. Connect the switch to the workstation computer by Ethernet cable (can be a direct
connection or through a network) by completing the following steps:
a. Remove the shipping plug from the Ethernet port.
b. Insert one end of an Ethernet cable in the Ethernet port.
c. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the workstation or to an Ethernet
network containing the workstation.
NoteThe switch can now be accessed remotely and from multip le connection s using
telnet or Web Tools. Ensure that the switch is not being modified from any other
connections during the remaining steps.
4. Log on to the switch with administrative privileges by telnet. The default administrative
logon is
admin and the default password is password.
CAUTIONDo not change the default password unless local administration policy
requires it.
5. Modify the domain IDs if desired by completing the following steps:
NoteThe default domain ID is 1. If the default domain ID is already in use when the
switch is connected to the fabric, the domain ID for the new switch is automatically
reset to a unique value. The domain IDs that are currently in use can be determined
using the telnet command fabricShow.
a. Disable th e switch by en tering the following:

c. Enter the following at the Fabric parameters prompt: y
d. Enter a unique domain ID: Domain: (1..239) [1] 3
e. Complete the remaining prompts (or pres s CTRL+D to accept the remaini ng settings

f. Re-enable the switch by enteri ng the follow ing:

Turning the FC 16B On and Off
To turn the FC 16B on, connect one or both power supplies to a power source, then flip the AC
power switch to “I”.

To turn the switch off, turn off both power supplies (if both are installed) by flipping each AC
power switch to “O”.
Note:Removing all power from the switch triggers a system reset. When power is r e stored, all
devices are returned to the initial state and the switch runs POST, a one-minute system
check.
Interpreting LED Activity
System activity and status can be determined through the activity of the LEDs on the switch.
Note:The LEDs may flash yellow during diagnostic tests, and green, yellow, or orange during
POST. This is no rmal, an d d oes no t indicate a pro blem unless th e LEDS do no t return to a
normal pattern after POST or the other diag nostic tests are co mplete. The orange ligh t may
be referred to as “amber” in other documentation.

Interpreting POST Res ult s
Each time the switch is powered on or reset, the switch automatically performs POST , a one minute
system check during which the port status LEDs flash different colors.
T o determine whether POST completed without errors, verify that all LEDs return to a normal state
after POST is complete. If one or more LEDs do not return to a normal state, and this is not due to
the switch being set to beacon, see Interpreting LED Activity on page 3-1 (for more information
about beaconing, refer to the Fabric OS Procedures Guide).
Note:If the switch prompt does not display when POST completes, POST was not successfully
completed and the switch should be returned to your HP account representative for repair.
Any errors detected during POST are written to the system log, accessible through the errShow

Maintaining the Switch
The FC 16B does not require any regular physical maintenance, and is designed to minimize the
chance of failure, including diagnostic tests and field-replaceable units.
Diagnostic Tests
Diagnostic tests are provided to help troubleshoot the hardware and the firmware. The diagnostic
tests provided on th e switch include tests of internal connectio ns and circui try, fixed media, and any
SFP modules and fiber optic cables in use. The tests are implemented by command, either through
a telnet session or through a terminal set up for a serial connection to the switch. Some tests require
the ports to be connected by external cables, to allow diagnostics to verify the serializer/deserializer
interface, as well as the attached SFP and cable.
All diagnostic tests are run at link speeds of both 1 Gbps and 2 Gbps. For information about the
specific diagnostic tests and how to run them, refer to the Fabric OS Procedures Guide.
Note:The transmit and receive speed of the links may be temporarily locked to a specific speed
during diagnostic testi ng.

Field-Replaceable Units (FRUs)

Warning
The power supplies, fan trays, and the entire switch can all be replaced in the field, without the use
of special tools. The switch can continue operating during the replacement of a fan tray or power
supply, if they are replaced one at a time. To simplify replacement, the switch has a minimum of
internal cables and no jumpers or hardware se ttings. Replacement instructions are provided with all
replacement units ordered.
The right and left power supplies are identical and fit into either power supply slot. Once they are
installed, they are identified by the Fabric OS as power supply #1, which is on the right when
viewing the switch from the power supply side , and power s upply #2, o n the left (see Fi gure 3-2 on
page 3-4). The right and left fan trays are als o identical and fit into either fan tray slot. Each fan tray
contains two fans: the fans in the fan tray on the right when viewing the switch from the power
supply side are identified by the Fabr ic OS as fans #1 an d #2, and th e fans in the fan t ray on the left
are identified as fans #3 and #4 (see Figure 3-2 on page 3-4).
This switch may have more than one power cable. To reduce the risk of
electric shock, disconnect both power cables before servicing.

The FC 16B switch consists of the following components:
•A 1U chassis, designed to be mounted in a 19-inch rack, with forced-air cooling that flows
from the power supply side of the switch to the SFP media side.
•16 optical ports, compatible with SFPs (small form factor pluggable media).
•One RS-232 serial port (DB9 connector) on the SFP media side.
•One IEEE compliant RJ-45 connector on the SFP media side for use with 10/100 Mbps
Ethernet or in-band.

The ports meet all required safety standards. For more information about these standards, see
Regulatory Compliance on page A-7.
The ports are capable of operating at 2.125 Gbps or 1.0625 Gbps. Each port has a SerDes
(serializer/de-serializer) which accepts 10-bit wide parallel data and serializes it into a high-speed
serial stream. The parallel data is expected to be “8B/10B” encoded data or equivalent.
Serial Port Specifications
The serial port has an RS-232 connector, and is located in the SFP media side of the switch.
Note:For dust and ESD (electrostatic disch arge) protection, a cover i s provided for the serial port
and should be kept on the port whenever the serial port is not in use.
The serial port can be used to connect to a computer workstation to configu re the switch IP address
without connecting to the fabri c. The serial por t’ s par ameters are 960 0 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1
stop bit, and no flow control.

POST Specifications
The switch automatically performs POST when the switch is turned on, rebooted, or the system is
reset. POST includes a number of diagnostic tests: the success/fail test results can be monitored
through the LED activity, the error log, or command-line interface.
POST completes in 60 seconds. A slightly longer version of the memory portion of the test is
performed after cold boots. A cold boot occurs after a complete power cycle, when the switch is
turned off then on. A warm boot is any other type of boot, such as an operating system reboot or
switch panic.
POST includes the following steps:
1.Preliminary POST diagnostics are run.
2.Operating system is initialized.
3.Hardware is initialized.
4.Diagnostic tests are run on a number of functi ons, includ ing intern al connecti ons an d circuitry,
port functionality, ability to send and receive frames, ability to implement QuickLoop
functionality, all aspects of memory, parity, statistics counters, and correct serialization.
5.Universal Port configuration is performed.
6.Links are initialized.
7.Fabric is analyzed. If ports are connected to other fabric elements, the principal switch in the
fabric is identified.
8.Port addresses are assigned. The switch attempts to retain any previously assigned port
addresses.
9.Unicast routing tables are constructed.
10. Normal port operation is enabled.

A. Certification and Classification Information
When equipped with native Fibre Channel adapters, this product contains a laser inter nal to the
small form factor pluggable (SFP) transceiver modules.
In the USA, the SFP module is certified as a Class 1 Laser product, conforming to the requirements
contained in Department Of Health and Human Services (DHHS) regulation 21 CFR, Subchapter J.
The certification is indicated by a label on the metal SFP housing.

A defined method and a set of standards for communication.
An NL_Port that logs into the fabric, can function within either a public or a
private loop, and can communicate with either private or public NL_Ports.
A device that supports arbitrated loop protocol, can interpret 8-bit addresses, and

An arbitrated loop that includes a participating FL_Port, and may contain both
public and private NL_Ports.
A software product that makes it possible to allow private devices within loops to
communicate with public and private devices across the fabric through the
creation of a larger loop.
May also refer to the arbitrated loop created usin g this softwa re. A QuickLo op
can contain a number of devices or looplets; all devices in the same QuickLoop
share a single AL_PA space.
Resource Allocation Time-out Value; the maximum time a frame can be delayed
in the fabric and still be delivered. See also E_D_TOV, RR_TOV.
Redundant Array of Independent Disks; a collection of disk drives that appear as
a single volume to the server and are fault tolerant through mirroring or parity
checking. See also JBOD.
A software product that runs on Fabric OS and enables two switches to be
connected over an ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) connection. This requires a
compatible Fibre Channel to ATM gateway, and can have a distance of up to 10
kilometers between each switch and the respective ATM gateway. See also
Distributed Fabrics.
The rate at which requests arrive at a servicing entity. See also Service Rate.
Route
As applies to a fabric, the communication path between two switches. May also
apply to the specific path taken by an individual frame, from source to
destination. See also FSPF.

The assignment of frames to specific switch ports, according to fr ame des tination.
Resource Recovery Time-out Value; the minimum time a target device in a loop
waits after a LIP before logging out a SCSI initiator. See also E_D_TOV, R_A_TOV .
RSCN
Registered State Change Notification; a switch function that allows notification of
fabric changes to be sent from the switch to specified nodes.

Storage Area Network; a network of systems and storage devices that
communicate using Fibre Channel protocols. See also Fabric.

Topology
The fiber optic cabling standard that corresponds to distances of up to 10 km
between devices.
Simple Network Management Protocol. An internet management protocol that
uses either IP for network-level functions and UDP for transport-level functions,
or TCP/IP for both. Can be made available over other protocols, such as UDP/IP,
because it does not rely on the underlying communication protocols. See also
Community (SNMP).
Simple Name Server; a switch service that stores names, addresses, and attributes
for up to 15 minutes, an d p rov id es them as required to other dev i ces in t h e fabric.
SNS is defined by Fibre Channel standards and exists at a well-known address.
May also be referred to as directory service. See also FS.
Hardware that routes frames according to Fibre Channel protocol and is
controlled by software.
The arbitrary name assigned to a switch.
A port on a switch. Switch ports can be E_Po rts, F_Ports, or FL_Ports.
Short W avelength; a type of fiber optic cabling that is based on 850mm lasers and
supports 1.0625 Gbps li nk s peeds. May also r efer to the type of G BIC or SFP. See
also LWL.
A storage device on a Fibre Channel network. See also Initiator.
The time from when a port wins arbitration in a loop until the same port returns to
the monitoring state. Also referred to as loop tenancy.
The rate of data flow achieved within a cable, link, or system. Usually measured
in bps (bits per second). See also Bandwidth.
As applies to Fibre Channel, the configuration of the Fibre Channel netw ork and
the resulting communication paths allowed. There are three possible topologies:
•Point to point - A direct link between two communication ports.
•Switched fabric - Multiple N_Ports linked to a switch by F_Ports.
•Arbitrated loop - Multiple NL_Ports connected in a loop.

Universal Port; a switch port that can operate as a G_Port, E_Port, F_Port, or
FL_Port. A port is defined as a U_Port when it is not connected or has not yet
assumed a specific function in the fabric.
User Datagram Protocol; a protocol that runs on top of IP and provides port
multiplexing for upper-level protocols.
Upper-level Protocol; the protocol that runs on top of Fibre Channel. Typical
upper-level protocols are SCSI, IP, HIPPI, and IPI.
Upper-level Time-out Value; the minimum time that a SCSI ULP process waits
for SCSI status before initiating ULP recovery.
The transmission of data from a single source to a single destination. See also
Broadcast, Multicast.
A software product that runs on Fabric OS and provides a graphical interface to
allow monitoring and manag ement of indi vi du al sw it ches or en tir e fabri cs fro m a
standard workstation.
As pertaining to Fibre Channel, a logical address defined by the Fibre Channel
standards as assigned to a specific function, and stored on the switch.

Zoning
A computer used to access and manage the fabric. May also be referred to as a
management station or host.
Worldwide Name; an identifier that is unique worldwide. Each entity in a fabric
has a separate WWN.
A set of devices and hosts attached to the same fabric and config ured as being in
the same zone. See also Zoning. Devices and hosts within the same zone have
access permission to others in the zone, but are not visible to any outside the zone.
A specified set of zones. Enabling a configuration enables all zones in that
configuration. See also Defined Configuration, Enabled Configuration.
A software product that runs on Fabric OS and allows partitioning of the fabric
into logical groupings of devices. Devices in a zone can only access and be
accessed by devices in the same zone. See also Zone.
