IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Read and understand all of the operating instructions, safety precautions and warnings in the Instruction Manual before operating
or maintainin g this comp ressor.
Most accidents that result from compressor operation and maintenance are caused by the failure to observe basic safety rules
or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing a potentially hazardous situation before it occurs, and by observing
appropriate safety procedures.
Basic safety precautions are outlined in the “SAFETY” section of this Instruction Manual and in the sections which contain the
operation and maintenance instructions.
Hazards that must be avoided to prevent bodily injury or machine damage are identified by WARNINGS on the compressor and
in this Instruction Manual.
Never use this compressor in a manner that has not been specifically recommended by HITACHI, unless you first confirm that the
planned use will be safe for you and others.
MEANINGS OF SIGNAL WORDS
WARNING indicates a potentially hazardous situations which, if ignored, could result in death or serious personal injury.
CAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous situat ions wh ich, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury, or may
cause machine damage .

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE OF THE COMPRESSOR
WARNING: Death or serious bodily injury could result from improper or unsafe use of compressor.
To avoid these risks, follow these basic safety instructions:
READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS
1. NEVER TOUCH MOVING PARTS.
Never place your hands, fingers or other body parts near the
compressor’s moving parts. Never insert your fingers or other
objects into the belt guard ventilator. Such an action invites the
danger of injuries or el ectric shoc ks .
2. NEVER OPERATE WITHOUT ALL GUARDS IN PLACE.
Never op erate this c ompressor without all gu ards or saf ety features
in place and in proper working order. If maintenance or servicing
requires the removal of a guard or safety features, be sure to replace
the guard or safety features before resuming operation of the
compressor.
3. ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTION.
Risk of injury. Always wear ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses with side
shields or equivalent eye prot ection. C ompress ed air must never be
aimed at any one or any part of the body. Us e ear protection as air
flow noise is loud when draining.
4. PROTECT YOURSELF AG AI NST ELECTRIC SHOCK.
Prevent body contact with grounded surfaces such as pipes,
radiators, ranges and refrigeration enclosures.
This compressor must be properly grounded.Don’t expose
compressor to rain.Never operate the compressor in damp or wet
locations.
To reduce risk o f electric shock, do not remove cover.
5. DISCONNECT THE COMPRESSOR.
Always disconnect the compressor from the power source and
remove the compressed air from the air tank before servicing,
inspecting, maintaining, cleaning, replacing or checking any parts.
6. AV O ID UNI NTE NTIO NAL START ING.
Do not carry the compressor while it is connected to its power source
or when th e air t an k is fill ed w it h compr essed air. Be sure the knob of
the pressure switch in the “OFF” position before connecting the
compressor to its power source.
7. STORE COMPRESSOR PROPERLY.
When not in use, the compressor should be stored in indoor dry
place. Keep out of reach of children. Lock-out the storage area.
8. KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN.
Cluttered areas invit e injuri es. Clear all work areas of unnec essary
tools, debris, furniture, etc.
9. CO NSIDE R WOR K AREA E NV IRO NME NT.
Keep wor k area wel l lit and w ell ventil ated . Risk of f ire or exp losion .
Do not carry and operate the compressor or any other electrical
devic e near th e s pray ar ea. D o n ot us e c ompr ess or in t he pr esenc e
of flammable liquids or gases.
Never plac e objects agains t or on top of com pressor. Com pressor
produces sparks during operation. Never use compressor in sites
containing lacquer, paint, benzine, thinner, gasoline, gases,
adhesive agents, and other materials which are combustible or
explosive.
In order to avoid damaging this compressor, do not allow the unit to
be tilted m ore t h an 10 ° w h en op erating.
SAFETY
10. KEEP CHILDREN AWAY.
Do not let visitors contact compressor extension cord.
All visit ors sh ou ld be k ept s afely away from work ar ea.
11. DRESS PROPERLY .
Do not wear l oose clot hin g or jewelry. T h ey can be caught in m o vi n g
parts. Wear protective hair covering to contain long hair.
12. DON’T ABUSE CORD.
Never yank it to di sconnect fro m receptacle.
Keep cord from heat, oi l an d sh ar p edg es .
13. MAINTAI N COMPRESSOR WITH CARE.
Follo w instruction s for lubricating.
Inspect cords periodically and if damaged, have repaired by
authori zed servic e center. I nspect ext ension c ords period ically an d
replace if dama ged.
14. OUTDOOR USE EXTENSI O N CORDS.
When com pr essor is us ed out d oors , use only extensi on c or ds
intend ed f or use outdoors an d s o marked.
15. STAY ALERT.
W atch what you are d oing . Us e c ommon s ense. N ev er st and on th e
compressor. Do not operate compressor when you are tired.
Compressor should never be used by you if you are under the
influence of alc ohol , dr u gs or med ication t h at mak es you drowsy.
16. CHECK DAMAGED PARTS AND AIR LEAK.
Before further use of the compressor, a guard or other part is
damaged should be carefully checked to determine that it will
operate properly and perform its intended function. Check for
alignment of moving parts, binding of moving parts, breakage of
parts, mou nt ing, air leak , and any ot her c ondit ions that m ay aff ect its
operati on. A gu ard or oth er part th at is d amag ed sh ould b e pr oper ly
repaired or replaced by an authorized service center unless
otherwise indicated elsewhere in this Instruction Manual. Have
defecti ve pressur e switches replaced by author ized servic e center.
Have def ec tive pilot valv e r epl aced b y aut hor iz ed s ervic e cent er. D o
not use compressor if switch does not turn it on and off.
17. NEVER USE COMPRESSOR FOR APPLICATIONS OTHER
THAN THOSE SPECIFIED.
Never us e compr ess or for app licati ons oth er than t hose s pecifi ed in
the Instruction M anual. Never us e compr essed air for br eathing or
respiration.
18. HANDLE COMPRESSOR CORRECTLY.
Operate the compressor according to the instructions provided
herein. Never allow the compressor to be operated by children,
individuals unfamiliar with its operation or unauthorized pe rsonnel.
19. KEEP ALL SCREWS, BOLTS AND COVERS TIGHTLY IN
PLACE.
Keep all screws, bolts, and covers tightly mounted. Check their
conditi ons p er i odically.
20. KEEP MOTOR AIR VENT CLEAN.
The motor air vent must be kept clean so that air can freely flow
at all times. Check for dust build-up frequently.

21. OPERATE COMPRESSOR AT THE RATED VOLTAGE.
Operate the compressor at voltages specified on their nameplates.
If using t he c ompr ess or at a hig h er volt ag e th an th e rat ed vol t age, i t
will resu lt in abnormall y fast motor revol ution and may d amage the
unit and bur n out th e m otor.
22. NEVER USE A COMPRESSOR WHICH IS DEFECTIVE OR
OPERATING ABNORMALLY.
If the compressor appears to be operating unusually, making strange
noises or vibration, or otherwise appears defective, stop using it
immediat ely and arr ange for r epairs by a Hit achi auth orized ser vice
center.
23. DO NOT WIPE PLASTIC PARTS WITH SOLVENT.
Solvents such as gasoline thinner, benzene, carbon tetrachloride,
and alcohol may damage and crack plastic parts. Do not wipe them
with such solvents. Wipe plastic parts with a soft cloth lightly
dampen ed wit h s oapy water and dry thor oughly.
24. USE ONLY GENUINE HITACHI RE PL ACEM ENT PARTS.
Replacement parts not manufactured by Hitachi may void your
warrant y and c an l ead t o malf unc tion and r esul ting i nj uries . G enuin e
Hitachi parts are av ail ab le from your deal er.
25. DO NOT MODIFY THE COMPRESSOR.
Do not modif y the compr essor. D o not operat e at pressur e or speed
in excess of m anufacturer’s recommendat ions. Alwa ys c ontact t he
Hitachi authorized service center any repairs. Unauthorized
modification may not only impair the compressor performance but
may also result in accident or injury to repair personnel who do not
have the required knowledge and technical expertise to perform the
repair operations c orrectly.
26. PUSH THE KNOB OF PRESSURE SWITCH TO OFF WHEN
THE COMPRESSOR IS NOT USED.
W hen th e com pressor is n ot us ed, p ush t he kn ob of the p ress ure
switch OFF, dis conn ect it from the pow er sourc e and open the drai n
cock to discharge the compressed air from the air tank.
27. NEVER TOUCH HOT SURFACE
To reduc e th e ris k of b urns, d o not t ouch tu bes, heads , c ylind er and
motor s.
REPLACEMENT PARTS
When servicing use only identical replacement parts.
Repairs should be conducted only by a Hitachi authorized service center.
28. DO NOT DIRECT AIR STREAM AT BODY.
Risk of injury, do not dir ec t air str eam at persons or an im als .
29. DRAI N TANK
Risk of burs ting. W ater will c ondense in th e air tank. If not drained ,
water will c orrod e and weak en the air tan k causin g a risk of air tank
ruptur e. Drain t ank dai ly or after 4 hour s of us e. To dr ain tank open
valve slowly and tilt compressor to empty accumulated water.
30. DO NOT STOP COMPRESSOR BY PULLI NG OUT THE
PLUG.
This could result in damage to the unit.
Use the “ON/OFF” kn ob of pressur e s witch.
31. MAKE SURE THE COMPRESSOR OUTLET PRESSURE IS
SET LOWER T HAN T HE MAXIM UM OPER ATING PRESS URE OF
THE TOOL.
Too much air pr essure causes a haz ardous risk of burs ting. Chec k
the manufacturer’s maximum pressure rating for air tools and
accessories. The regulator outlet pressure must never exceed the
maximum pressure rating.
32. THE SAFETY VA LVE MUST WORK PROPERLY.
Risk of b ursti ng. Bef ore st arting t he com press or pull the ring on th e
safety valve to make sure the valve moves freely. If the safety valve
does not work pr operly, over-pressurization may occ ur, caus ing air
tank rupture or an expl os i on.
33. USE OF THIS PRODUCT WILL EXPOSE YOU TO
CHEMICALS KNOWN TO THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA.
Some dust created by this product contains chemicals known to
State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other
reproduc t i ve h arm. Some e xam p l es of these chem icals are:
- compounds in fertilizers
- compounds in insecticides, herbicides and pesticides
- arsenic and chromium from chemically treated lumber
To reduc e your expos ure t o thes e chemic als, wear appr oved s af ety
equipm ent such as dust masks th at are spec ially desig ned to filt er
out microscopic particles. Use of this product will expose you to
chemicals kn own to the State of California to caus e canc er, birth
defects and other reproductive harm. Av oi d inh aling vapor s an d dus t,
and wash hands after using. This product contains chemicals,
includi n g l ead , know n t o the St at e of Cal ifornia t o caus e c ancer, an d
birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling.

SAFETY - Continued
GROUNDING INTRUCTIONS
This compressor should be grounded while in use to protect the
operator from electric shock. The compressor is equipped with a
three-c onduct or cord and t hree- prong grou nding t ype plug to fit th e
proper gr oundin g type r eceptac le. The gr een (or green and yell ow)
conductor in th e c or d is t h e groundi n g wire. Never conn ect t h e green
(or green and yel low ) wir e to a li ve term inal. If you r unit is f or use on
less th an 150 volts , it has a plug t hat l ooks li ke th at sh own in s k etch
(A) in Fi gure on th e right. A n adapter , see sk etches (B) and (C), is
available for connecting sketch (A) type plugs to two-prong
recept acles. The green -colored rigid ear, lug, or the li ke extending
from the adapt er mus t b e c onnected to a perm an ent ground, s uch as
a properly ground ed outl et b ox.
Note: T he gr oundi ng ad aptor , sk etch ( C), is pr ohi bited in C an ada b y
Canadian Electrical Code Part 1. Therefore, the instructions for
its use are n ot app licable in C an ad a.
W e rec omm en d t hat you never d isass embl e t he compressor or try to
do any rewiring in the electrical system. Any repairs should be
performed only by HITACHI Service Centers or other qualified
service organizations. Should you be determined to make a repair
yourself, remember that the green colored wire is the “grounding”
wire. Nev er connect t his green wir e to a “live” t ermin al. If you repl ac e
the plug on the power cord, be sure to connect the green wire only to
the grounding (longest) prong on a 3-prong plug.
If in doubt, call a qualified electrician and have the receptacle
checked for ground.
EXTENSION CORD
Use only thr ee-wire extens ion cords that h ave three-prong gr ounding-type plugs an d three-pole receptacl es that accept th e compr essor’s plug.
Replace or repair damaged cord.
Make sur e your ext ensi on cord is in good cond ition. W hen using an extens ion cord, be sure t o use one h eavy en ough to c arry the c urrent your
product will draw . An und ersiz ed cord w ill caus e a drop in li ne volt age resu lting in l oss of p ower and overh eating. T able s hows the c orrect siz e to

PRIOR TO OPERATION
1. Power source
Ensure that the power source to be utilized conforms to the
power source requirements specified on the product nameplate.
2. Power switch
Ensure t hat the knob of th e pressure s witch is in t he “OFF”
positi on (Fig. 2) . If th e plug is c onnect ed to a rec eptacl e while
the knob is in the “ON” position, the compressor will start
operating immediately and can cause serious injury.

When th e work area is f ar aw ay from the p ower s ource, us e an
extens ion cord of suf ficient thic kness and rated capacity (r efer
page 6). The extension cord should be kept as short as
practicable.
WARNING:
If the power receptacle only loosely accepts the plug, the
recept acle must be repair ed. Cont act the nearest el ectric store
for repair service.
If such a faulty receptacle is used, may cause overheating,
resultin g in a s er i ous haz ar d.
Damaged cord must be replaced or
repaired.
Position the compressor on a flat surface or one with an
inclination of 10° at the most, in a well ventilated area
away from atmospheric agents and not in explosive areas
(Fig.3).
CAUTION
When operating or storing the compressor, set 4 rubber
bumpers downward on the floor (Refer to Fig.1)
In order to avoid damaging the compressor,
do not allow the unit to be tilted more than
10° when operating .

6. Temperature
Operating temperatures are between 32°F and 104°F
(0°C and 40°C).
CAUTION:
Never operate in temperatures below 32°F
(0°C) or above 104°F ( 40°C ).
TRANSPORT
Push the knob of the pressure switch to “OFF” and disconnect it from
the power source before move the compressor. Transport the
compressor in the correct manner.
OPERATION
1. St art- u p
Insert th e plug into th e receptac le and start th e compress or by
pulling the knob of the pressure switch to “ON” (Refer to Fig. 2).
WARNING
The oper ation of the compressor is automatic and is c ontrolled by
the pressur e switch which st ops it when the pressu re in the air-tan k
reaches the maximum level and restart it when the air pressure
drops during use to the restart level.
The motor of the compr essor is fit ted with a th ermal prot ection wit h
automat ic reset, which stops the compr essor when t he temper ature
is too high. Should this be tripped, the compressor will restart
automat ically aft er c ool off .
CAUTION:
2. Adj us tm en t of wor k in g pressure
Unlock the knob of the pressure reducer pulling it up, adjust the
pressure to the required level by turning the knob clockwise to
increase and counterclockwise to decrease.
A pressure gauge (B) is provided to know when the required
pressur e is r each ed, loc k the knob by pus hing i t dow n fir mly (Ref er
to Fig. 4).
When ad justing the p ressur e, ch eck an d make s ure th at a pr essure
gauge f or th e tank h as th e pressu re l evel th at is higher t han t hat of
the pressure to be adjusted.
It is als o imp erati ve that you m ake ad just ment b y slowl y star ting u p
the pressure from the level that is lower than the press ure to be
adjusted.

3. Shutdown

and Fig. 2).
(2) Unplug the plug from power source.
(3) Open the drain cock located at the lower part of the tank (Fig. 5).
WARNING
Risk of bursting. When the tank gets
corroded, there is a risk of breakdown.
Water will condense in the air tank. If not
drained, water will corrode and weaken
the air tank causing a risk of air tank
rupture. Drai n tan k daily or aft er 4 hours of
use. The drain contains moisture in the
air, abr asion partic les, rust, etc. To drain
tank open valve slowly and tilt
compressor to empty accumulated water.
Keep face and eyes away from drain cock.

SERVICE AND REPAIRS
All quality compressors will eventually require servicing or
replacement of parts because of wear from normal use.
To assure that onl y auth o rized replacement part s will be
used, all service and repairs must be performed by a
HITACHI AUTHORIZED SERVICE CENTER, only.
