You have just purchased a TCO'95 approved and labelled product! Your choice has provided you with a product developed for professional use. Your purchase ha s a l so contributed to reducing the burden on the environment and also to the further development of environmentally adapted electronics products.

This product meets the requirements for the TCO’95 scheme which provides for an international environmental and quality labelling of personal computers. The labelling scheme was developed as a joint effort by the TCO (The Swedish Confederation of Professional Employees), Svenska Naturskyddsforeningen (The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation), Statens Energimyndighet (The Swedish National Energy Administration) and SEMKO AB.

The requirements cover a wide range of issues: environment, ergonomics, usability, reduction of electric and magnetic fields, energy consumption and electrical safety.

Why do we have env ironm entally la belled computers?

In many countries, environmental labelling has become an established method for encouraging the adaptation of goods and services to the environment. The main problem, as far as computers and other electronics equipment are concerned, is that environmentally harmful substances are used both in the products and during their manufacture. Since it is not so far possible to satisfactorily recycle the majority of electronics equipment, most of these potentially damaging substances sooner or later enter nature.

There are also other characteristics of a computer, such as energy consumption levels, that are important from the viewpoints of both the work (internal) and natural (external) environments. Since all methods of electricity generation have a negative effect on the environment (e.g. acidi c and cl imate-influencing e mi s sions, radioac t ive waste), it is vit a l t o save energy. Electronics equipment in offices is often left running continuously and thereby consumes a lot of energy.

What does the environmenal labelling inv olv e?

The environmental demands has been developed by Svenska Naturskyddsforeningen (The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation). These demands impose restrictions on the presence and use of heavy metals, brominated and chlorinated flame retardants, CFCs (freons) and chlorinated solvents, among other things. The product must be prepared for recycling and the manufacturer is obliged to have an environmental policy which must be adhered to in each country where the company implements its operational policy.

The energy requirements include a demand that the computer and/or display, after a certain period of inactivity, shall reduce its power consumption to a lower level in one or more stages. The length of time to reactivate the computer shall be reasonable for the user.

Environmental requirements

Flame retardants

Flame retardants are present in printed circuit boards, cables, wires, casings and housings. Their purpose is to prevent, or at least to delay the spread of fire. Up to 30% of the plastic in a computer casing can consist of flame retardant substances. Most flame retardants contain bromine or chloride, and those flame retardants are chemically related to another group of environmental toxins, PCBs. Both the flame retardants containing bromine or chloride and the PCBs are suspected of giving rise to severe health effects, including reproductive damage in fish-eating b ir d s and mammals, due to the bio-accumulative have been found in human blood and researchers fear that disturbances in foetus development may occur.

The relevant TCO’95 demand requires that plastic components weighing more than 25 grams must not contain flame retardants with organically bound bromine or chlorine. Flame retardants are allowed in the printed circuit boards since no substitutes are available.

Cadmium**

Cadmium is present in rechargeable batteries and in the colour-generating layers of certain computer displays. Cadmium damages the nervous system and is toxic in high doses. The relevant TCO’95 requirement states that batteries, the colour-generating layers of display screens and the electrical or electronics components must not contain any cadmium.

Mercury**

Mercury is sometimes found in batteries, relays and switches. It damages the nervous system and is toxic in high doses. The relevant TCO’95 requirement states that batteries may not contain any mercury. It also demands that mercury is not present in any of the electrical or electronics components associated with the labelled unit. There is however one exception. Mercury is, for the time being, permitted in the back light system of flat panel monitors as there today is no commercially available alternative. TCO aims on removing this exception when a mercury free alternative is available.

CFCs (freons)

The relevant TCO’95 requirement states that neither CFCs nor HCFCs may be used during the manufacture and assembly of the product. CFCs (freons) are sometimes used for washing printed circuit boards. CFCs break down ozone and thereby damage the ozone layer in the stratosphere, causing increased reception on earth of ultraviolet light with e.g. increased risks of skin cancer (malignant melanoma) as a consequence.

Lead**

Lead can be found in picture tubes, display screens, solders and capacitors. Lead damages the nervous system and in higher doses, causes lead poisoning. The relevant TCO´95 requirement permits the inclusion of lead since no replacement has yet been developed.

Limited Warranty for USA Customers Only

Hitachi America, Ltd. warrants our Hitachi CRT color monitor to be free from defects in material and workmanship for 36 months from the date you purchased it if your purchase was made prior to 1/31/01 or 60 months if your purchase was made after 1/31/01 from your authorized Hitachi America, Ltd. dealer. If you purchase a Hitachi Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) color monitor, Hitachi provides a warranty of 36 months for the panel and 12 months for the backlight if purchased before 1/31/01 or 36 months for both panel and backlight if purchased after 1/31/01. In the event of a defect during this 12 month, 36 month or 60 month period, Hitachi America, Ltd. will, at its option, repair or replace the monitor at no charge except as set forth below. If proof of purchase cannot be provided by owner, the warranty period will start to run from the date of manufacture.

Hitachi America, Ltd. may repair your monitor with new or reconditioned parts or replace it with a new or reconditioned monitor of the same or similar kind, and any replaced monitors or parts become Hitachi America, Ltd.'s property.

Exclusions from this warranty:

This is a natural process in CRTs & LCDs due to the degradation of the LCD backlight and the degradation of the CRT phosphors that create the image and is not covered by this warranty. This warranty excludes decreased image clarity or reduced brightness due to natural aging of the monitor/display. In addition, this warranty does not cover phosphor burn. Phosphor burn can occur when a monitor is left with one static image for extended periods of time during which the image may become burned into the phosphors.

This limited warranty does not cover damage occurring in shipping or in storage after you purchase the monitor or damage caused by abuse, accident, disaster, misuse, mishandling, mispackaging or shipping, improper installation, unauthorized repair or modification, or failure to follow the manufacturer's instruction with respect to the proper handling, operation, installation, service and maintenance of the monitor.

To obtain warranty service, call 1-800-536-6721 to obtain a return authorization and the location of your Hitachi service center or return the monitor to the dealer from whom you bought it (subject to that dealers' return policy). If you choose to ship the monitor rather than delivering it in person, you must assume the risk of damage or loss in transit. You must also use the original shipping container (or equivalent packaging), pay shipping charges, and enclose a copy of the proof of purchase date with the monitor. Maniement et utilisation

Manipulez et utilisez l’appareil conformément aux descriptions de ce manuel. Si vous éprouvez un problème à l’emploi de l’appareil, mettez-le hors tension, débranchez le cordon d’alimentation et contactez le revendeur chez qui vous avez acheté l’appareil ou un centre de service.

Soins suffisants

Avertissement

Chaleur, fumée, odeur ou sons abnormaux

Si une anomalie se produit, mettez l’appareil hors tension et débranchez le cordon d’alimentation, car une utilisation continue dans cet état pourrait provoquer une incendie ou une décharge électrique . La partie autour du cordon doit être dégagée pour permettre de le débrancher facilement.

Réparation, modification, démontage

N’essayez pas de démonter, de réparer ou de modifier l’appareil, car ceci pourrait provoquer un incedie ou une décharge électrique.

Orifices d’aération

Les orifices d’aération ont pour but d’éviter une hausse de la

température interne. Ne placez pas d’objets qui pourraient boucher ces orifices et ne placez pas l’appareil dans une baie où les orifices pourraient être obstrués, car la hausse de tempér ature interne pourrait provoquer un incendie ou une défaillance.

Ne placez pas l’appareil dans une baie où il serait dans une position

inclinée, car ceci modifierait le passage de l’air par les orifices. La hausse de la température interne pourrait alor s provoquer un incendie ou une défaillance.

Insertion de corps étrangers

N’introduisez jamais de trombones, épingles ou autres objets métalliques par les orifices de ventilation, car ceci pourrait provoquer un incendie ou une défaillance.

Retrait du couvercle

Ne retirez pas le couvercle de l’appareil, car il renferme de nombreuses plèces sous haute tension qui peuvent être dangereuses.

Objets posés sur l’appareil

Ne posez pas de vases, tasses ou autres récipients contenant un liquide, épingles trombones ou autres objets métalliques sur l’appareil, car leur infiltration pourrait provoquer un incendie ou une décharge électrique.

Maniement du cordon d’alimentation

Utilisez le cordon d’alimentation fourni avec l’appareil et veillez aux points suivants. Une utilisation inadéquate du cordon peut provoquer un incendie ou une décharge électrique.

- Ne posez rien sur le cordon.

- Ne tirez pas sur le cordon.

- N’exercez pas de pression sur le cordon.

N’utilisez pas le cordon près d’appareils de chauffage.

Branchement et débranchement

- Lorsque vous branchez ou débranchez le cordon au niveau de la prise secteur; tenez-le par sa fiche. En tirant sur le cordon proprement dit, vous risquez d’arrachez la fiche.

- Avant une longue période d’inutilisation, comme avant les vacances, débranchez le cordon d’alimentation pour éviter un incendie.

Pour éviter une décharge électrique, ne touchez pas le cordon d’alimentation

avec des mains humides.

Mauvais contact électrique aux prises

Pour éviter un mauvais contact aux prises de courant, pouvant provoquer un incendie, tenez compte des point s suivants:

- Insérez à fond la fiche dans la prise.

- Avant de brancher la fiche, vérifiez que de la poussière ne s’y est pas

accumulée.

- N’ulilisez pas une prise desserée ou mal fixée.

Impact et choc

Ne laissez pas tomber, ne cognez pas et ne soumettez pas l’appareil à des chocs, car il pourrait provoquer un incendie ou une décharge électrique.

Tension électrique

La tension de fonctionnement va de 230 à 240 V. Toute autre tension pourrait provoquer un incendie ou une décharge électrique.

Utilisation de l’adapteur secteur

- Pour éviter une décharge électrique, ne l’utilisez pas avec des mains humides. N’utilisez pas l’adapteur avec un appareil autre que ce moniteur, car ceci

pourrait provoquer un incendie, une décharge électrique ou endommager

l’appareil. Pour éviter un incendie, n’ulitisez pas l’adapteur dans un endroit mal ventilé.

Prise à extension

Ne branchez pas plusieurs fiches sur une même prise. Ceci peut provoquer un incendie ou une activation des disjoncteurs, entraînant une perte des données ou des dégâts à l’appareil.

Utilisation en milieu humide ou poussiéreux

N’utilisez pas et ne rangez pas l’appareil dans un endroit poussiéreux ou humide, tel une sale de bain, car ceci peut provoquer un incendie ou une décharge électrique.

Variation de température

Transporter l’appareil dans des endroits où la température est très différente peut entraîner une condensation d’humidité à l’intérieur et à l’exterieur de celui-ci. L’utiliser dans cet état peut provoquer un incendie ou une décharge électrique. Laissez reposez l’appareil pendant quelques heures avant de l’utiliser dans un local différente.

Condensateur électrolytie à alumnium

Le condensateur électrolytique utilisé dans l’adapteur secteur a une durée de vie limitée. Au-delà de cette période (environ 5 ans), remplacez l’adapdateur secteur. Une fuite ou un déssèchement du liquide electrolytique peut provoquer un incendie ou une décharge électrique. Ceci peut aussi entraîner une défaillance de l’appareil.

Dégâts subis par l’affichage

- Un liquide peut s’écouler de l’affichage s’il est endommagé. Ne touchez pas ce liquide. En cas de contact sur les mains, lavez-les convenablement. Si du liquide entre en contact avec la bouche ou les yeux, lavez et rincez abondamment, puis consultez immédiatement un médecin.

- Si l’affichage fabriqué en verre, devait se briser, manipulez les fragments avec grand soin pour ne pas vous blesser.
