†
The probe ti p should be rin sed with puri ed water (rever se
osmosis, dis tilled, or dei onized) befo re and after p lacing in any
solution (b uer, storage, o r sample).
Operational Guide
Before usi ng the instru ment for the rs t time, open th e
batter y compart ment and inser t batter ies, obser ving the
pol arit y.
To connect the probe
With the me ter turned o, conn ect the FC242D pro be to the
DIN socket o n the bottom o f the meter by align ing the pins
and pushin g in the plug. Tigh ten the nut to ensu re a good
connect ion. Remove the p rotectiv e cap from the pro be
before taking any measurements.
To turn the meter ON and check
the batte ry status
Press the ON /OFF/MODE button to turn t he meter on. At
star t-up, all the LCD segmen ts are displaye d for 1 second,
then the pe rcent indicat ion of the remain ing batter y life is
displayed f or another sec ond. The meter t hen enters the
normal measuring mode.
Note: Holdin g the ON button wh ile turning th e meter on will
display all LC D segments as l ong as the but ton is pressed .
To freeze the display
While in meas urement mode , press and hold t he SET/HOLD
button u ntil “HOLD“ appe ars on the seco ndary displa y and
the readin g will be frozen on t he LCD. Press any b utton to
return to n ormal mode.
To turn the meter OFF
While in nor mal measurem ent mode, pre ss the ON/OFF/MODE
button . “OFF“ will appea r on the seconda ry display.
Note: When the m eter detect s the absence o f probe at its
input, t he message “Probe not connected“ a ppears on LCD
and “----“ blinks o n LCD lines. When a p robe is connec ted,
the “Probe not connected“ tag i s turned o, and the
readings a re displayed on th e LCD.
To enter calibration mode
Press and h old down the ON/OFF/MODE but ton until “OFF“
is replace d by “CAL.“ Release th e button.
To enter setup mode
Press and h old ON/OFF/MODE button unt il “CAL“ is replaced
by “TEMP“ on t he secondar y display. Release t he button.
Meter Setup
While in meas urement mod e, press and h old the ON/OFF/MODE
button u ntil “TEMP“ ap pears on the s econdary dis play.
Pressing t he ON/OFF/MODE button will n ow cycle throu gh
the vario us units and fea tures below w hich can then be
modied w ith the SET/HOLD button.
To select the temperatur e unit (°C/°F)
Press ON/OFF/MODE but ton until “TEMP ” and the selec ted
temperature unit “°C“ or “°F “ is displayed. Pr ess SET/HOLD
button t o select temp erature unit .
To select standard or NIST b uers for
calibration
Press ON/OFF/MODE but ton until “TEMP ” is displayed. Pr ess
ON/OFF/MODE once more to vie w the current bu er set.
To change the bue r set press SET/HOLD. Choos e “pH 7.01
BUFF” (for sta ndard buer se t: 4.01/7.01/10.01) or “pH 6.86
BUFF” (for NIST bu er set: 4.01/6.8 6/9.18).
To return to measurement mode
Press ON/OFF/MODE button.
pH Measurement and Calibration
†
• Make sure the meter h as been calibr ated before us e.
• If the probe is dr y, soak it in HI70300 st orage solut ion for
30 minutes to reactivate it.
• Submerge the pr obe in the sampl e to be tested wh ile
stirri ng it gently. Wait unt il the “Not Stable“ tag on the
LCD disappears.
• The LCD displays t he pH value (automa tically
compensa ted for temper ature) on the prim ary LCD, while
the secon dary LCD disp lays the sampl e temperatu re.
• If measuremen ts are taken in di erent sample s
successively, rinse the probe tip thoroughly
†
to eliminate
cross-con tamination . After cleanin g, rinse the pr obe tip
with som e deionized wat er and some of the s ample to be
measured.
For bett er accuracy, fre quent calibr ation of the pH
sensor wi th the meter is re commended. In a ddition,
the meter mu st be recalibr ated whenev er:
a) The p H electrode i s replaced.
b) After testing aggressive chemicals.
c) Where high accur acy is requir ed.
d) At least o nce a month.
pH calibration
• Enter calibrat ion mode while in p H measuremen t mode.
• Place the senso r into the rst c alibration b uer. If
perfor ming a two-p oint calibr ation, use pH 7.01 (pH 6.86 f or
NIST) bu er rst.
• The meter will ente r the calibrat ion mode, displa ying
“pH 7.01 USE” (or “pH 6.86 USE” fo r NIST).
Follow dire ctions for sin gle and two-p oint calibrat ion below:
Single-point calibr ation
1. P lace the probe i n any buer from t he selecte d buer set.
The meter w ill automatic ally recogni ze the buer val ue.
2. If the b uer is not reco gnized or the cal ibration os et
is out of the a ccepted rang e “---- WRNG“ is displayed.
3. If the b uer is recogni zed “REC“ is displa yed until the
reading is s table and the c alibration is a ccepted.
• If using pH 7.01, after acce ptance of the bu er
press any key t o exit. “OK1“ mess age is displayed
and meter re turns to pH meas urement mode.
• If using 4.01 or 10.01/9.18 b uer the “OK1“ messa ge is
displayed and meter returns to pH measurement mode.
Two-point calibration
Proceed w ith steps 1 thr ough 3 under sin glepoin t cali brati on us ing 7.01 (pH 6.86 for NIST )
pH buer r st. Then follo w steps below:
• The “pH 4.01 USE“ mess age is then disp layed.
• Place the probe i n the second cal ibration bu er (pH 4.01
or 10.01/9.18). Whe n the second bu er is accepted, t he
LCD will displ ay “OK2” for 1 seco nd and the meter w ill
return to t he normal mea surement mode .
• If the buer is not r ecognized or th e slope is out of
accepted r ange “---- WRNG“ is display ed. Change the
buer, clean th e electrode o r press any key to e xit
calibration.
Note: When the c alibration p rocedure is
complete d, the “Calibrated “ tag is turne d on.
It is alway s recommended t o carry out a t wopoint cali bration for be tter accura cy.
Battery Replacement
The meter is s upplied with b atteries .
The meter di splays the rema ining batter y percenta ge when
turned o n. When the level is b elow 5%, the
symbol o n
the LCD blink s to indicate a lo w batter y condition. If t he
batter y level is low eno ugh to cause er roneous readi ngs,
the Bat tery Error Pr evention Syst em (BEPS) turn s the meter
o. It is recomme nded to replace t he batteri es as soon
as the displ ay ashes the ba ttery sy mbol. To replace the
batteries:
• Open the batt ery compar tment cap (on the b ottom of the
instr ument).
• Remove old batteries.
• Replace new bat teries, obs erving the p olarity on t he rear
of the inst rument.
• Close the bat tery compa rtment cap.
