health.
The Adhesives and sealants used in this appliance are cured and give no known hazard in this state.
REFRACTORY CERAMIC FIBRE
This product uses fuel effect Pieces containing Refractory Ceramic Fibre (RCF), which are man-made vitreous silicate fibres.
Excessive exposure to these materials may cause temporary irritation to eyes, skin and respiratory tract, consequently, it makes
sense to take care when handling these articles to ensure that the release of dust is kept to a minimum.
To ensure that the release of fibres from these RCF articles is kept to a minimum, during installation and servicing we recommend
that you use a HEPA filtered vacuum to remove any dust and soot accumulated in and around the fire before and after working on
the fire. When replacing these articles we recommend that the replaced items are not broken up, but are sealed within heavy duty
polythene bags, clearly labelled as RCF waste. This is not classified as “hazardous waste” and may be disposed of at a tipping site
licensed for the disposal of industrial waste. Protective clothing is not required when handling these articles, but we recommend
you follow the normal hygiene rules of not smoking, eating or drinking in the work area and always wash your hands before eating
or drinking.
INSULATION and SEALS
Ceramic fibre and glass fibre used in insulation panels rope and gaskets.
These can cause irritation to skin, eyes and the respiratory tract.
If you have a history of skin complaint you may be susceptible to irritation. High dust levels are usual only if the material is broken.
Normal handling should not cause discomfort, but follow normal good hygiene and wash your hands before eating, drinking or going
to the lavatory.
If you do suffer irritation to the eyes or severe irritation to the skin seek medical attention.

Instructions for Use
Important Notice
This appliance is fitted with a flue blockage safety device which
will shut down the appliance in the event of abnormal flue
conditions. This device is NOT a substitute for an independently
mounted Carbon Monoxide detector.
There is also installed, a safety device which will shut down the
fire in the event of the fan failing.
If the fire shuts down for no apparent reason the flue/fan and the
air inlets into the room must be checked. Any problems found
must be put right, by a competent person, before the fire is used
again.
IN ALL cases the room must be ventilated before attempting to
relight the fire.
The safety devices must not be bypassed or put out of action,
as to do so may cause a life threatening situation.
Under general safety advice, switch off mains supply when not
in use for prolonged periods.
It is essential that only genuine Glow-worm parts are used.
All WARNINGS and cautions in these instructions must be
observed.
This fire is for use only on G20 gas.
The Gas Safety (Installation and Use)
Regulations
In your own interests and that of safety it is the Law that ALL gas
appliances are installed by a competent person in accordance
with the current issue of the above regulations.
If this fire is installed in a rented property there is a duty of care
imposed on the owner of the property by the current issue of the
Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations, Section 35.
General Information
Chatsworth (black only). The brass coloured badge on this
appliance can be replaced with a black badge, which is supplied
in fret pack.
A slight smell may occur, for a short time, after initial lighting, this
is quite normal and it will quickly disappear.
With a little use the interior of the fire will discolour and take on
the appearance of a solid fuel fire.
Caution. Combustible furniture or materials should not be
placed closer than 1 metre to the front or sides of the fire.
Clothing or other flammable materials must not be placed on the
fire casing.
Soft wall coverings, for example, blown vinyl wall paper, are
easily affected by heat, they may, therefore, discolour or become
scorched when close to a heating appliance. This should be
borne in mind when having a heating appliance fitted and when
redecorating.
Safety -WARNING

This fire has a naked flame.
A fireguard MUST be used for the protection of the young,
elderly or infirm.
A fireguard should comply with the current issue of BS6539
“Fireguards for use with solid fuel appliances” or the current
issue of BS6778 “Fireguards for use with portable, free standing
or wall mounted heating appliances”.
Do not allow any refuse or rubbish to be burnt on this fire, or any
objects to be placed in the flue outlet.
Maintenance and Servicing
To ensure the continued efficient and safe operation of the fire
it is recommended that it is checked and serviced as necessary
at regular intervals. The frequency of servicing will depend
upon the particular installation and usage, but in general once
a year should be enough.
Regularly make sure that any purpose provided ventilation is
free from obstruction.
Heat Output
The fire will work for about 4 hours 20 minutes at full rate on one
therm of gas. The price of a therm of gas will vary according to
the tariff.
Gas Leak or Fault
If a gas leak or fault exists or is suspected the fire MUST be
turned off and must not be used again until the fault has been
put right. Advice or help should be obtained from your installation
or servicing company.

Clearances
A shelf or surround of a maximum depth of 150mm may be
fitted, provided that clearances are as shown in diagram 1,
however, for every 25mm extra above the fire the depth of the
shelf may be increased by 25mm.
Lighting the Fire
WARNING. WHEN NOT IN USE THE REMOTE CONTROL
HANDSET MUST BE SECURED WITHIN ITS PRESENTATION
BOX AND KEPT IN A SAFE PLACE TO PREVENT
ACCIDENTAL MANIPULATION.
Important Notes: Please read the information about the safety
device at the beginning of these User Instructions before
lighting the fire.
If there is a power failure the fire will go out.
There are 2 methods of lighting the fire:
1. Remote Handset
2. Control Box
IMPORTANT NOTE
Identify where the fan control switch has been located.
If a flame is not detected during the ignition period the control will
go to lock out. Press the OFF button on the handset or control
box to reset.
Method 1. - Remote Handset.
Make sure the electrical supply to the appliance is on.
NOTE : The fan must be switched on before any attempt to light
the fire is made.
Make sure that the handset batteries are fully charged and they
are fitted correctly.
Point the handset towards the control box.
Press either the Low, Med. or High button to light the fire, the fire
will ignite on low then after 20 seconds will change to the
selected setting.
IMPORTANT. IF DURING THE LIGHTING PROCEDURE
THE FIRE IS EXTINGUISHED OR GOES OUT FOR ANY
OTHER REASON, WAIT AT LEAST 3 MINUTES BEFORE
RELIGHTING. REPEATED ATTEMPTS TO RELIGHT
WITHOUT THIS DELAY MUST NOT BE CARRIED OUT.
Reminder : Always switch the fan off AFTER turning off the fire.
Method 2. - Control Box.
If the handset fails to operate (check batteries) or is misplaced,
the fire can be lit by use of the buttons on the conrol box.
Make sure the electrical supply to the appliance is on.
NOTE : The fan must be switched on before any attempt to light
the fire is made.
Press either the Low, Med. or High button to light the fire, the fire
will ignite on low then after 20 seconds will change to the
selected setting. The buttons are located behind the ashpit
cover. There is no need to remove the ashpit cover to access the
buttons, see diagram 2.
IMPORTANT. IF DURING THE LIGHTING PROCEDURE
THE FIRE IS EXTINGUISHED OR GOES OUT FOR ANY
OTHER REASON, WAIT AT LEAST 3 MINUTES BEFORE
RELIGHTING. REPEATED ATTEMPTS TO RELIGHT
WITHOUT THIS DELAY MUST NOT BE CARRIED OUT.
Reminder : Always switch the fan off AFTER turning off the fire.
Coal or Coke Lever.
WARNING. This must only be used when the
fire is cold.
The aeration of the burner can be adjusted to give a yellow coal
flame or a bluer coke appearance.
To achieve these effects
Remove the ashpit cover, see diagram 4.
Push the lever up for coal effect and down for coke, see diagram
2.
Soot Accumulation
Note: A small amount of soot accumulating is quite normal and
will give the fire a more realistic effect.
If desired, these minor soot deposits can be burned off by
running at the coke setting for approx. one hour.

Instructions for Use
Cleaning your Fire
WARNING. This fire contains metal parts (components) and
care should be taken when handling and cleaning, with particular
regard to edges.
Any cleaning must only be done when the fire is cold.
If large pieces of debris are found the flue should be inspected
and the fire serviced before further use.
Under normal conditions dusting the surrounds of the fire
should be enough. An occasional wipe over with a damp cloth
will help to remove any marks.
Do not use an abrasive cleaning powder or liquid.
To Clean the Fuel and Supports - this can be
done by the User
Should any soot accumulation become excessive, the fuel
effect pieces should be removed from the fire for cleaning.
Cleaning should be carried out in a well ventilated area or in the
open air, by gently brushing with the pieces held away from your
face so that you avoid inhaling the dust. We do not recommend
the use of a normal domestic vacuum cleaner, which may blow
dust back into the air.
Remove the fret and ash pit cover, see diagram 4 & 5.
Take care not to damage the frame.
Following steps 1 to 8 in reverse order, remove the fuel effect
pieces and fuel effect supports, see diagram 6.
Be careful as with use they become fragile.
Clean the fuel effect pieces and fuel effect supports with a soft
brush, as above.
With the fuel effect pieces and fuel effect supports removed, the
base of the appliance may be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner.
Note: After cleaning, always adhere strictly to the instructions
when reassembling the fuel effect supports and fuel effect
pieces.
Use only the fuel effect approved for this fire.
Do not use more fuel effect pieces than specified.
NOTE: The Importance of positioning the fuel effect pieces
correctly cannot be over-emphasised if sooting is to be avoided.
The flame effect may also be impaired and the life of the fuel
effect pieces reduced if assembly instructions are not followed.
STEP 1. When fitting the front support make sure the feet are
located at the back of the retaining lip and the support fits
between the brackets.
STEP 2. Fit the side supports tightly into the front corners
touching the side and front of the appliance.
STEP 3. Fit the rear support, making sure it sits on the bottom
of the brackets, by pushing it down firmly.
STEP 4. Fit the middle support over the burner making sure it
sits between the brackets on the burner. Keep the support clear
of the cross lighting ports.
STEP 5. Place the two large fuel effect pieces with the flat bases
and round indents down. Leave gaps around the pieces.
NOTE: The remaining fuel effect pieces can be turned as
requires to maintain a constant gap around each fuel effect
piece.
STEP 5 CONTINUED. Place four small fuel effect pieces
starting from the outside, leaving gaps around the pieces. The
left hand outside piece must touch the side of the fire. The right
hand outside piece must touch the left hand side of the burner
support bracket.
STEP 6. Place seven small fuel effect pieces on the middle
support starting from the outside, leaving gaps around the
pieces. The two outside pieces touch the sides of the fire.
STEP 7. Place six small fuel effect pieces on the six flat areas
of the rear support starting from the outside, leaving gaps
around the pieces. The two outside pieces touch the sides of
the fire.
STEP 8. Place five small fuel effect pieces on the top of the rear
support starting from the outside overlapping slightly the
previously fitted pieces and touching the rear of the fire. Leave
gaps around the front and side of the pieces. The two outside
pieces do not touch the sides of the fire.
When you have fitted all the small pieces you may have to adjust
some slightly to maintain constant gaps.
Replacement of Parts
If replacement parts are required use only genuine Glow-worm
parts and buy them from a recognised supplier.
Fuelbed Fitting
CAUTION. If the fuel effect supports and fuel effect pieces are
damaged, do not light the fire until replacement parts are fitted.
USE ONLY THE FUEL EFFECT PIECES APPROVED FOR
THIS FIRE.
DO NOT USE MORE FUEL EFFECT PIECES THAN
SPECIFIED.
DO NOT CHANGE THE LAYOUT OF THE FUEL EFFECT
PIECES.
The importance of positioning the fuel effect pieces correctly
cannot be overemphasised if sooting is to be avoided. The
flame effect may also be impaired and the life of the fuel effect
pieces reduced if assembly directions are not followed.
Before positioning the fuel effect pieces, study carefully the
illustrations showing the layout procedure of the pieces, see
diagram 6.
Follow steps 1 to 8 starting at Step 1, making sure that each step
is completed before carrying on to the next and that all written
instructions are adhered to, see diagram 6.

to be used should comply with the requirements of applicable
British Standards.

1.5 Fire Location
This fire is suitable for hearth mounting only.
The fire must be secured to a vertical wall face. This wall face
may be a chimney breast or a surround having a minimum flat
area as shown in diagram 1.2.
The fire must not be fitted directly onto a carpet , combustible
floor or combustible wall.
This fire MUST NOT be fitted in a room used or intended to be
used as a bathroom or shower room.
The fire can be fitted to a purpose made proprietary class “O” -
o
C or 150oC surround.

1.6 Clearances
Restrictions must not be placed around the assembled fire, see
diagram 1.2.
A shelf or surround of a maximum depth of 150mm may be
fitted, provided clearances are as shown in diagram 1.2.
However, for every 25mm extra above the fire the depth of the
shelf may be increased by 25mm.
Combustible furniture or materials must not be placed closer
than 1 metre to the front or sides of the fire.
1.7 Concealed Gas Supply
A concealed supply, from the rear, can be fitted.
It is necessary to protect the supply pipe with an approved
sheathing if the fire opening and flue have been used for a solid
fuel appliance.
The gas installation must be in accordance with the current
issue of BS6891.
The supply from the governed meter must be of adequate size
to provide 20mbar at the fire.
On completion, test the gas installation for soundness
using the pressure drop method and suitable leak detection
fluid. Purge in accordance with the above standard.

1.8 Electrical Supply
WARNING. This fire must be earthed.
All system components shall be of an approved type and shall
be connected in accordance with the current issue of BS7671
and any applicable local regulations.
Connection of the fire and controls to the mains supply should
be through a common isolator, a double pole isolating switch,
fused 3A, should be used, having a minimum contact separation
of 3mm in both poles.
Wiring to the fire MUST be PVC 85oC insulated type to the
current issue of BS6500 Table 16, not less than 0.75mm2 (24/
0.20mm).
NOTE: Avoid all sharp edges and hot surfaces when routing the
cables.

2 Preparation & Flue Installation
2.1 Terminal Position
The minimum acceptable siting dimensions for the terminal
from obstruction, other terminals and ventilation openings are
shown in diagram 2.1.
The terminal must be in a position where it will be exposed to the
external air, allowing free passage of air across it at all times.
Car ports or similar extensions of a roof only, or a roof and one
wall, require special consideration with respect to any openings,
doors, vents or windows under the roof. Care is required to
protect the roof if it is made of plastic sheeting. If the car port
consists of a roof and two or more walls, seek advice from the
local gas company before installing the fire.
If the terminal is fitted within 600mm below plastic guttering or
painted soffit an aluminium shield 1500mm long should be fitted
immediately beneath the guttering or eaves. If the terminal is
fitted within 450mm below painted eaves or a painted gutter, an
aluminium shield 750mm long should be fitted immediately
beneath the guttering or eaves.

2.2 Terminal Guard
The terminal guard is required for all installations.
2.3 Hearth Fixing
In ALL cases a fireproof hearth to the minimum dimensions as
shown in diagram 2.2 must be fitted.
2.4 Installation
There are two methods of installing the fire.
For fireplaces where the wall is not plastered and not covered
by BS1251 it is important that such installations comply with the
current issue of The Building Regulations.
Any combustible material, for example, blown vinyl wall
coverings, on the fire fixing face area of the surround must be
removed, see diagram 2.3.
Method 1
Refer to diagram 2.4.
This requires the construction of an extended fire surround or a
false chimney breast. The advantage of this method is that it
requires least disruption to the cavity wall.
Note: When constructing the fire surround or chimney breast,
any combustible material must be no less than 75mm from the
appliance, unless protected by 25mm of insulation.

This allows for the fire to be installed in the inner skin of the
cavity wall.
Note: The back of the fire or the insulation blanket must not
intrude into the cavity space.
It requires the extraction of a section of the inner cavity wall.
Care should be taken when undertaking this work, as there may
be cavity wall insulation present. Some insulation is of a
granular nature, resulting in a considerable loss of it, should
precautions not be taken.
Mark out the area required either side of the centre line. This
should just be enough to allow the fire to fit in easily, see
diagram 2.3.
Important: The opening can be cut to the minimum dimensions,
only if no combustible material is within 75mm of the fire. Only
in this case may the insulation blanket on top of the fire be
removed to enable the fire to fit in.
Remove the required section and strengthen with a suitable
lintel (if necessary) over the opening.
The cavity space of both sides and the top must be closed with
a non-combustible material.
Note : Required opening depth can be
reduced to 130mm with the use of the
optional spacer kit.

2 Preparation & Flue Installation
2.5 Timber Frame Building
The two installation methods as described may be used to
install the appliance in a timber framed building provided
adequate protection to combustible material is made.
It should be fitted in accordance with the Institute of Gas
Engineers document IGE/UP/7/1998. If in doubt seek advice
from the local gas undertaking or Hepworth Heating Ltd.
Method 1
The flue opening through the timber section of the wall will need
to have a non-combustible lining of at least 200mm minimum
outside diameter (supplied with the fire) projecting no more than
10mm into the cavity of the wall, see diagram 2.5.
Note: If both inner and outer leafs are constructed of timber, the
non-combustible flue liner will need to extend the full width of the
wall.
Refer to Section 2.6 for marking out and positioning of fire, flue
and flue terminal.
Note: Before this work is carried out, consideration should be
given to the position of the timber studding, as this could involve
extra work in removing studwork and if necessary, strengthening
the remainder.
Using a suitable drill or brace and bit, make a pilot hole, at the
center of the marked out flue orifice, through the timber
construction, changing to a drill and masonary bit to continue
though the outer brick leaf of the wall.
Carefully cut out and remove the plasterboard of the marked out
circle with a suitable craft knife.
If there is a vapour barrier behind the plasterboard, this should
be cut out approx. 10 to 20 mm less than the diameter of the flue
liner.
Remove any insulation material and using the liner as a template,
mark out on the inner timber sheathing, the circumference of the
liner.
Some insulation is of a granular nature, resulting in a considerable
loss of it, should precautions not be taken.
With brace and bit, make several holes around the circumference
and using a suitable narrow bladed saw, cut out the hole.
On the outside wall, finish making the flue orifice, using a
suitable core drill, to receive the 101mm diameter flue.
Insert the flue liner into the inner wall leaf making sure it does
not intrude more than 10mm into the cavity space, and mark it
12mm from the plasterboard to allow for the insulation board,
cut to size.
Seal inner and outer edges of the flue liner with a non-setting
thermal mastic.
An insulation board measuring 780mm x 690mm x 12mm will
have to be fitted to the inner wall with a hole cut to accommodate
the flue liner, see diagram 2.5.
Secure fire insulation board to wall.
If in doubt advice must be sought from the local gas undertaking
or Hepworth Heating Ltd.
Method 2
Should Method 2 be used, which requires the removal of a
section of the inner timber leaf of the wall, care should be taken
as not to weaken the structure. If any part of the vertical
studwork has to be removed, the remaining part of the studwork
should be supported by fitting a cross member above the
proposed opening.
Note: The back of the fire or the insulation blanket must not
intrude into the cavity space.
Care should be taken when undertaking this work, as there may
be cavity wall insulation present. Some insulation is of a
granular nature, resulting in a considerable loss of it, should
precautions not be taken.
Refer to Section 2.6 for marking out and positioning of fire, flue
and flue terminal.
Where combustible material is near to the fire, an air gap of
25mm minimum must be maintained all round the insulation
blanket
Mark out the area required either side of the centre line.
Note: Allow for the thickness of the fire insulation blanket and air
gap when undertaking this work.
Cut out and remove the required section and strengthen (if
necessary).
The cavity space of both sides and the top must be closed with
a non-combustible material.
The finished opening will also need to be lined with suitable
insulation to protect inner leaf of wall from the heat of the
appliance.
Note: The non-combustible flue liner is not required if Method 2
is used, unless the outer wall leaf is of timber construction.
An insulation board measuring 780mm x 690mm x 12mm will
have to be fitted to the inner wall with a opening cut to
accommodate the fire assembly.
Secure fire insulation board to wall.
If in doubt advice must be sought from the local gas undertaking
or Hepworth Heating Ltd.

Mark the vertical center line of the fire on the wall.
Mark a point on the center line 468mm from the top of the hearth.
Note: If timber framed building, refer back to Section 2.5.
Using a suitable core drill cut the flue hole horizontal to the
diameter shown in diagram 2.3.
Should installation Method 2 be adopted, the removal of inner
cavity leaf should be carried out at this stage.
Note: Remove any brick debris and cavity insulation if necessary.
Remove power flue terminal from its packing.
Remove the securing screws and take off flue hood, see
diagram 2.6.
Undo the three nuts holding fan assembly to wall plate, see
diagram 2.7, and remove.
Fix the flue manifold adaptor to the flue manifold at the rear of
fire using two self tapping screws provided, see diagram 2.8.
Fit the insulation jacket to the back of the appliance with the tape
provided, see diagram 2.9.
Attach flue to flue manifold adaptor at the rear of the fire.
Place the fire in position, inserting the flue in the hole already
prepared.

Note: Do not cut the end of the flue which has the holes for self
tapping screws.
Replace fire and flue in position.
Position the wall plate so that the flue fits in the wall plate
manifold. The hole for the power supply cable must be positioned
at the bottom left, see diagram 2.11.
Mark the position of the four fixing points and the hole for the
power cable.
Remove fire and flue.
Drill the four fixing point holes and insert wall plugs.
Drill a hole for the power cable about 25mm dia. though the
cavity wall.
Note: It is important that a separate hole is made for the power
cable, so that it does not come into contact with the flue, causing
possible burning of the cable.
Remove flue from fire and secure flue to wall plate manifold with
two self tapping screws provided, see diagram 2.10.
Insert flue into wall.

Note: 5 metres of cable for wall switch and 2.5 metres of
mains cable can be cut to required lengths, but allow for
future removal of fire. The power flue cable must not be cut,
all of the above cables are supplied with the appliance.
3.1 Fire Fixing - Electrical Cable Routing
Remove the front protective grille which is secured by
three screws, see diagram 3.1.
Remove the control box securing screws.
Remove the burner assembly, fan proving unit and control box
assembly, take care not to damage any components.
The mains electrical supply, the cables to the fan and wall switch
are routed through the opening on the left hand side of the fire
assembly, see diagram 3.2.
WARNING: When routing electrical cable, avoid placing it near
potentialy hot surfaces and against sharp edges.
If the mains supply or the wall switch cable is from the right, it
should be routed round the back of the appliance.
Refer to Section 1.8 and use enough cable to allow for the future
removal of the burner assembly, control box and fan proving
unit, see diagram 3.2.
3.2 Gas Supply - Connection
Refer to diagram 3.3.
Where the fire is fitted in nurseries, old people’s homes and the
like, the isolation device may be of the type fitted with a
removable key.
A flexible connection MUST NOT be used.
If the gas supply is through the rear of the appliance, the angled
gas service cock is used to isolate the fire, see diagram 3.3.
Note: Left and right hand preformed gas supply pipe kits can be
bought. Part numbers 453728 (left hand) and 453729 (right
hand), see diagram 3.4.
A means of isolating the gas inlet supply must be fitted.

4.1 Fan Switch
The switch to turn the fan “ON” and “OFF”, should be situated
on the wall, at a suitable position for the user to operate.
See diagram 8.4 for wiring details.
Insert fan switch plug into "ON" / "OFF" wall switch connector,
see diagram 4.1.
4.2 Electrical Plug
Connection to the mains should be through the plug supplied
and connected to the mains socket, see diagram 4.1.
4.3 Testing - Electrical
Checks to ensure electrical safety must be carried out by a
competent person.
After installation of the system, preliminary electrical system
checks as below should be carried out,
1. Test the earth continuity and short circuit of all cables.
2. Test insulation resistance to earth of mains cable.

5.1 Lighting and Testing
Remove the pressure test nipple screw and fit a suitable
pressure gauge, see diagram 5.1.
Turn the gas supply on at the external control.
To check for gas soundness, apply leak detection fluid to all
joints.
Switch on electrical supply.
Press the "ON" switch to start the fan.
Note : The fire will not operate unless the fan is running.
Lighting the Fire
Air may be present in the supply to the fire so that the initial
lighting operation may need to be repeated.
Check both methods of lighting the fire:
1. Remote Handset
2. Control Box
WARNING! Take care when doing the following checks, as the
burner has a naked flame.
WARNING! The handset must be kept in your
possession whilst doing the following checks.
IMPORTANT NOTE
If a flame is not detected during the ignition period the control
will go to lock out. Press the OFF button to reset.
Method 1. - Remote Handset.
Fit the two batteries supplied in the fittings pack into the remote
handset.
Point handset towards the control box.
Press either the Low, Med or High button to light the fire, the
fire will ignite on low then after 20 seconds will change to the
selected setting. Check all settings, Low, Med and High.
IMPORTANT. IF DURING THE LIGHTING PROCEDURE
THE BURNER IS EXTINGUISHED OR GOES OUT FOR ANY
OTHER REASON, WAIT AT LEAST 3 MINUTES BEFORE
RELIGHTING. REPEATED ATTEMPTS TO RELIGHT
WITHOUT THIS DELAY MUST NOT BE CARRIED OUT.
Always switch the fan off AFTER turning off the fire.
Method 2. - Control Box.
Press either the Low, Med or High button to light the fire, the fire
will ignite on low then after 20 seconds will change to the
selected setting. Check all settings, Low, Med and High.
IMPORTANT. IF DURING THE LIGHTING PROCEDURE
THE BURNER IS EXTINGUISHED OR GOES OUT FOR ANY
OTHER REASON, WAIT AT LEAST 3 MINUTES BEFORE

Coal or Coke Lever
The aeration to the burner can be adjusted to give a yellow Coal
flame or a bluer Coke appearance.
To achieve these effects push the lever up for Coal effect and
down for Coke, see diagram 5.1.
Testing - Gas Soundness and Rate
With the burner lit, check all joints for gas soundness, at all
control positions, in accordance with the current issue of
BS6891.
Check that the gas pressure is as stated in the Data Section or
on the Data Label.
If there is any doubt about the gas rate, check at the meter,
having first turned off all other gas appliances and pilot lights.
The gas rate for this fire at high setting is 22.68 ft3/h (0.8 m3/
h).
Press the OFF button, see diagram 5.1.
Remove the pressure gauge, refit the screw and make sure that
a gas tight seal is made.
Switch the fan off.

5.3 Fuelbed, Fret and Ashpit Fitting
For fuelbed fitting see Instructions for Use pages 6 & 7.
CAUTION. If the fuel effect supports and fuel effect pieces are
damaged, do not light the fire or further test until replacement
parts are fitted.
Chatsworth only - fit the baffle plate, see diagram 5.3.
Fit the fret and ashpit cover as shown in diagrams 5.4 and 5.5.
Take care not to damage the frame.
5.4 Heat Settings
Refer to diagram 5.1.
In the unlikely event of the burner going out whilst the fire is on.
Wait three minutes before relighting.
If relighting for any other reason wait two minutes before doing
so.
5.5 Testing for Clearance of Products
The fire must be fitted with all its parts.
Make sure that all doors and windows in the room are closed.
Set coal/coke lever to coke.
Using the remote handset, light the fire, set to high and run for
five minutes.
Insert smoke match as shown in diagram 5.6.
Check that most of the smoke is drawn in.
If there is any doubt, leave the fire alight for a further ten minutes
and repeat test.
If there is a fan in an adjacent room, open the interconnecting
doors, light the fire and repeat the test with the fan running.
In ALL cases, if spillage occurs the cause must be found
and put right before the fire is left.
IF THE FAULT CANNOT BE PUT RIGHT, THE FIRE
MUST BE DISCONNECTED AND EXPERT ADVICE

6 Instructions to User
Hand the Instructions for Use, Installation & Servicing to the user and make sure that they are understood.
Refer to the Instructions for Use on how to light the fire.
Advise the customer that they should read their Users instructions before operating the fire and always follow the advice in the Section
headed “Cleaning your Fire”.
Advise that any smell which may be apparent on initial lighting is quite normal and it will quickly disappear.
IMPORTANT. Advise that soft wall coverings, for example, blown vinyl wallpaper, are easily affected by heat, they may, therefore,
scorch or become discoloured when close to a heating appliance. This should be borne in mind when having a heating appliance
installed and when redecorating.
Make sure that the user understands the importance of the safety device.
Advise that to ensure the continued efficient and safe operation of the fire it is recommended that it is checked and serviced at regular
intervals. The frequency of servicing will depend upon the particular installation and usage, but in general once a year should be
enough.
Draw attention, if applicable, to the current issue of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations, 35, which imposes a duty of
care on all persons who let out any property containing a gas appliance.
It is the Law that any servicing must be carried out by a competent person.
Reminder, leave these instructions with the user.
7 Servicing
7.1 Notes
To ensure the continued efficient and safe operation of the fire
it is recommended that it is checked and serviced at regular
intervals. The frequency of servicing will depend upon the
particular installation and usage, but in general once a year
should be enough.
It is the Law that any servicing is carried out by a competent
person.
Refer to Section 1.2.
Before starting make sure that the gas and electrical supplies
are turned off.
Make sure that the fire is cold before doing any servicing.
After servicing of parts always test for gas soundness with a
suitable leak detection fluid.
WARNING. Take care as the burner has a naked flame.
To test the gas control assembly apply leak detection fluid to all
joints, light the burner and check all joints for leakage at all
settings.
Carry out functional check of controls.
After removing or disconnecting any pipework always make
sure that it is refitted correctly and does not interfere with the
fitting of the fire.
Unless stated otherwise all parts are replaced in the reverse
order to removal.

7 Servicing
7.3 Fuel Effect Supports and Fuel Effect
Pieces
Following steps 1 to 8 in reverse order, remove the fuel effect
pieces and fuel effect supports, pages 6 & 7, in Instructions for
Use.
Care should be taken as they become fragile with use.
Clean the fuel effect pieces and the fuel effect supports with a
soft brush.
IMPORTANT: A VACUUM CLEANER MUST NOT BE USED
ON FUEL EFFECT PIECES OR FUEL EFFECT SUPPORTS.
With the fuel effect pieces and fuel effect supports removed,
the base of the appliance may be cleaned with a vacuum
cleaner.
NOTE: The Importance of positioning the fuel effect pieces
correctly cannot be overemphasised if sooting is to be avoided.
The flame effect may also be impaired and the life of the fuel
effect pieces reduced if assembly directions are not followed,
see section 5.3.
7.4 Burner Assembly / Control Box / Fan
Proving Unit
Remove control box / fan proving unit, see section 3.1.
Disconnect the gas supply, see diagram 3.3.
Remove the burner assembly, refer to section 3.1.

7.5 Burner
The burner can be cleaned in position, using a suitable soft
brush or vacuum cleaner.
Do not use a brush with wire bristles.
7.6 Injector
Disconnect the gas supply pipe union nut from the injector. Pull
the pipe down to allow easier removal, see diagram 7.1.
Do not clean the hole with a wire or sharp instrument.
7.7 Safety Device
Refer to Section 1.
Check the condition of the electrode and thermocouple, clean
with a soft brush, see diagram 7.2.
When cleaning also make sure that all the holes in the safety
device are clear of dust and lint.
Make sure that the electrode is in line with the earth post and
that the spark gap is as shown in diagram 7.2.

8.2 Electrical
Important. The preliminary electrical system checks as
contained in a Multimeter instruction book are the first checks
to be carried out during a fault finding procedure. On completion
of the Service fault finding task, which has required the
breaking and remaking of electrical connections, and checks,
earth continuity, polarity and resistance to earth must be
repeated.
Isolate the fire from the electrical supply.
Remove the fret and ashpit cover, see diagram 5.4 and 5.5.
Refer to the electrical fault finding, diagram 8.2 and functional
flow, diagram 8.3.

8.4 Safety Device
If the fire shuts down for no apparent reason the fan flue and the
air inlets into the room must be checked. Any problems found
must be put right, before the fire is used again.
Also, check for dust and lint around the holes in the safety
device.
IN ALL cases the room must be ventilated before attempting to
relight the fire.
The safety devices must not be bypassed or put out of action.
