Operating Manual Genelec DI8A
Active Balancer
Description
The Genelec DI8A Active Balancer is designed to convert an unbalanced line signal to a balanced line signal, thereby reducing its susceptibility to electronic interference. The DI8A has eight independent signal channels. One of the channels has duplicated outputs, providing easy connection for twin subwoofers in large systems. The DI8A is equipped with a muting circuit to reduce noise caused by switching the unit on or off. A remote control connector for remote ON / STANDBY switching is also provided.
We recommend that you install the DI8A close to the signal source, so that you can keep the unbalanced input lines as short as possible. The DI8A can be attached into a 19” rack using the rack ears included in the kit or placed on a shelf. Before connecting any cables, ensure that all equipment is powered down and the mains voltage selector on the left side of the DI8A has been set to your local mains voltage.
Connect the unbalanced signal cables from the program source to the RCA input connectors on the back panel of the DI8A and the balanced output cables from the correspondingly numbered XLR connectors on the DI8A to the active speakers or power amplifiers. Note that channel 8 has duplicated outputs 8a and 8b. This allows connecting two subwoofers to the LFE channel of a surround sound system.
The switches for remote power ON / STANDBY and +6 dB gain adjustment are covered with a plexiglass to ensure that the settings are not altered accidentally.
Remote control
The DI8A has a provision for remote power ON / STANDBY switching. Two pairs of connectors are provided, pins 1 and 2 for a 12 V DC trigger type remote control and pins 3 and 4 for an external switch or relay type control. Do not connect two remote controls to the DI8A at the same time. The remote control function must be activated by turning the “REMOTE CONTROL” dip switch on the front panel to “ON”.
Gain adjustment
The +6 dB gain adjustment feature allows the user to increase the output level from the DI8. This may be needed if the output from the main preamp/processor is found insufficient to drive the system loudspeakers to their full output capability. This situation should occur rarely though, and the feature should not be used unless sure that maximum gain has been reached on the main preamp/processor.
The +6 dB gain setting can be selected separately for each of the eight channels using the “GAIN” switches located on the front panel. Usually it is best to activate every +6 dB switch at the same time so that the balance of multi-channel recordings is preserved and further system calibration is kept to a minimum.
Reduce the preamp/processor volume to minimum before activating the +6 dB switches. After you have activated all switches, increase the volume and check the resulting level.
Safety
The DI8A has been designed in accordance with international safety standards. However, to ensure safe operation and maintain the instrument in safe operating condition the following warnings and cautions must be observed.
Do not expose the DI8A to dripping or splashing. Do not place any objects filled with liquid, such as vases on the DI8A or near it.
No naked flame sources, such as candles, should be placed on the DI8A.
Servicing and adjustment must only be performed by qualified service personnel.
Opening the DI8A is strictly prohibited except by qualified service personnel.
Always use a mains power connection with protective earth. Failing to do this may lead to personal injury.
