Important Safeguards for Electrical Appliances
The appliance is heated electrically. Place the appliance near a suitable wall power socket to connect the appliance directly to a protected mains power supply with protective conductor (earth/ground) connected properly. Ensure that the voltage rating of your mains power supply corresponds to the voltage requirements of the appliance (230 V, 50 Hz, AC, rated for 15 A).
25
Page 6
The installation of a residual current operated circuit breaker (r.c.c.b.) with a maximum rated residual operating current of 30 mA in the supplying electrical circuit is strongly recommended. If in doubt, contact your electrician for further information.
In various foreign countries, the specifications for power supplies are subject to incompatible norms. Therefore it is possible that power supplies in foreign countries do not meat the requirements for safe operation of the appliance. Thus, before operating the appliance abroad, ensure that safe operation is possible.
• It is recommended not to use any extension cords. Nevertheless, if you wish to use an extension cord, it must be connected properly with live, neutral and protective ground conductor and a permanent loading range of at least 15 A (core diameter: at least 1 mm
2
). Do not use a
multi socket outlet.
• Always handle the power cord with care. Always completely unwind the power cord before use. Do not place the appliance on or near a power cord. Power cords may never be knotted, twisted, pulled, strained or squeezed. Do not let the plug or power cord hang over the edge of the table or counter. If necessary, use a rope to tie the extension cord to the table-leg to avoid, that the appliance will be pulled by the power cord. Take care not to entangle in the power cord. Always grasp the plug to disconnect the power cord from the power outlet. Do not touch the power plug, with wet hands when the appliance is connected to the power supply.
• Do not place or immerse the appliance, the grill plates, or the power cord in water or any other liquid. Do not spill or drip any liquids on the power cord or exterior of the appliance. When liquids are spilled on the appliance or power cord, immediately switch OFF and unplug the appliance.
Hot Surfaces – Risk of Burns
The raclette is designed for cooking and heating a variety of foods and, therefore, the whole appliance will get hot during operation.
• Beware of steam and hot condensate, as well as splashing hot fat and meat juices during operation and even some minutes after switching off, especially when removing the fondue pot and/or opening the lid of the fondue pot. Take care that persons present maintain a sufficient distance from the hot grill plates with hands, arms, face and clothes during operation. Do not place any sensitive objects directly near the appliance.
• During operation only touch the appliance and its accessories at the operating components and handles (e.g. heating control dial, handles of fondue pot / raclette dishes). On the interior of the lid of the fondue pot, condensate could accumulate and splash violently, when dripped on the hot grill plates. During operation, protect your hands, arms, and valuable clothes (e.g. with oven gloves) when making a reach for the fondue pot.
Do not overfill the fondue pot or raclette dishes, especially when heating food- stuffs that could violently froth or splash. Do not place any too large pieces of food, overhanging the edges, on the grill plates or in the fondue pot. Otherwise hot fat, water or meat juice could overflow and cause severe scalds and damage. Especially when preparing fondue with oil, do not dip wet or frozen ingredients in hot oil, to avoid splashes and boiling over.
• To avoid damage and risk of fire: Do not place any heat-sensitive or inflammable objects (i.e. charcoal, paper, plastic, clothes) or inflammable liquids on or near the appliance during operation! Do not place hot drinks with high alcoholic content (i.e. mulled wine, grog) on or near the appliance if the appliance is still hot. Alcohol is highly volatile and the vapour is easy inflammable and could catch fire by any source of ignition (i.e. cigarette, candle, heating elements of the appliance) and therefore causing severe injuries to persons and damage.
26
Page 7
Non-stick Coating
The grill plates and raclette dishes of your raclette are provided with a non-stick coating. Do not use hard or sharp objects for scratching or cutting on the coatings. Always remove your foods from the coated surfaces, before cutting. We will not be liable for damage to the non-stick coating where metal utensils or similar objects have been used. Cooking on a non-stick surface minimises the need for oil or fat, food can easily be removed and does not stick. Additionally, cleaning is easier. Before first use, wipe the non-stick surface with a little amount of oil. Do not use metal (or other abrasive) scourers for cleaning the nonstick coating. Wipe with hot soapy water. Remove stubborn residue with a non abrasive plastic scouring pad or nylon washing brush. Any discolouration that may occur will only detract from the appearance and will not affect the cooking performance.
Please adhere to the following precautions:
• Do not use the appliance with the non-stick coating being scratched, cracked or detached due to overheating.
• Only use wooden or heat-resistant plastic cooking utensils to stir and serve the food. Do not use spray-on non-stick coatings. Do not use violence. Clean the cooking plates with hot dishwater and a soft sponge or nylon brush.

on the appliance. Do not place the appliance or any part of it in an automatic dishwasher.
3. Before first use and after a longer period of storage, clean the appliance and all accessories. (See: “Care and Cleaning“)
Before cooking, insert the plug into the outlet on the body, and the power supply plug into the socket outlet.
First Heating
Prior to initial operation, the protective layer of the heating elements has to be burned in. This could cause a fine smoke haze, due to the first heating of some of the components. There is no need for concern. To prevent smell and taste of your food from being affected, you should heat the appliance on the maximum position of both heating control dials for 10 minutes before placing any food on the grill plates. If the smoke haze occurs again later on, thoroughly clean the appliance according to the instructions in section “Care and Cleaning“.
CAUTION: Do not operate the appliance without the grill plates properly in place. When the fondue pot is inserted during operation, there must be a minimum amount of liquid in the fondue pot (at least 150 ml).
4. Place the raclette on a suitable, stable and heat-resistant surface and prepare the raclette for use (See: “Operation“). Pour ca. 250 ml water in the fondue pot, and WITH the grill plates and fondue pot properly in place, make the appliance ready for use. (See: “Operation“)
5. Set both heating control dials to maximum position, heating the appliance to full power for about 10 minutes. (See: “Operation“) It is quite normal, if slight and harmless smokes and smells are generated for a short while.
Note: If the burnt smell occurs again on later use, clean the appliance. (See: “Care and Cleaning“) If the burnt smell persists stubbornly even after thoroughly cleaning the appliance, return the appliance to an authorized service centre for examination and repair.
Preparing the Non-Stick Coating
WARNING: Do not touch the grill plates when the appliance is still hot! Switch OFF, unplug
and let the appliance cool down, before touching the grill plates.
6. Turn both heating control dials to the OFF position (“–”), unplug and let the appliance cool down to room temperature.
7. Spread a little cooking oil (only some droplets) on the coated upper side of the grill plates and distribute it with clean kitchen paper on the non-stick coating. Rub it dry.
8. Rub the interior of the raclette dishes with oil in the same way. Now the appliance is ready for use.

Operation
WARNING: Always ensure that there are no foreign objects in the raclette levels or fondue pot,
the grill plates are inserted properly and both heating control dials are in the OFF position (turn to “–” position to the stop), before connecting the appliance to the power supply.
Risk of Burns! The raclette will become very hot during operation, even at the exterior. During operation only touch the appliance by the operating elements or handles. Always switch OFF and unplug the appliance and allow cooling down, before removing meat juices and fat from the grill plates. Ensure that all persons present,
including yourself, maintain a sufficient distance to the appliance to avoid injuries by hot surfaces and splashes. This holds especially for inserting or removing the fondue pot or removing any food from the fondue pot; in particular, when foods are cooked on the grill plates simultaneously. Always protect your hands, arms, and valuable clothes by using oven gloves from heat and splashes. Do not hold your face over the appliance!
Do not use any hard or sharp objects with the appliance (e.g. metal cooking utensils, fondue forks), to avoid damage to the surfaces. Do not use violence!
Your new Design Raclette-Fondue-Set provides three functions in only one unit, and it is possible to use all the three functions at the same time.
Two Separately Controlled Heating Elements
Your raclette comes with two individually controlled heating elements to serve for a broad variety of different foods. The best suited settings for your dishes depend on the type of ingredients and the desired consistency.
Select a low temperature to defrost and re-heat food. Use medium temperature settings to cook seafood and scallops. Use high temperature settings (maximum position “+”) for meat and poultry.
Adjust the grilling temperature with the RACLETTE heating control dial. (See: “Some General Tips“) Adjust the fondue temperature with the FONDUE heating control dial.
• Maximum setting: for bringing water or bouillon to the boil, or heating oil.
Note: To speed-up heating in the fondue pot, turn both heating control dials to maximum “+” position. As soon as the content of the fondue pot is boiling, turn the RACLETTE heating control dial to the desired grilling temperature, or turn off this dial (“–” position to the stop), if you do not wish to use the grill plates.
• Medium settings: to keep the contents hot and/or boiling.
• Low settings: for tender sauces and dips (e.g. cheese sauce and chocolate dip)
WARNING: Risk of Burns! During operation only touch the appliance and its accessories (e.g. raclette dishes) at its handles. Even the lid and exterior of the appliance/fondue pot will get hot during operation! Some heavy sauces splash when hot (e.g. tomato sauces, sauce Hollandaise). Thus, you should keep the lid of the fondue pot closed whenever possible.
Note: To save energy and time, it is the best to keep the lid closed during operation.
29
Page 10
Getting Ready for Use
WARNING: For operation always place the appliance on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
During operation, do not place any clothes, napkins or any other foreign objects under, beneath or on the appliance, in the raclette levels or fondue pot. Do not operate the appliance by using any parts or accessories not recommended by the manufacturer (e.g. raclette dishes, fondue pots). Do not place the appliance on or immediately near any power cord. Do not place heatsensitive, moisture- or fat-sensitive objects near the appliance. Do not operate the appliance near any objects that could catch fire (e.g. curtains, candles, inflammable liquids as high-proof alcoholic drinks or mineralized spirit).
Do not operate the appliance without the grill plates properly in place.
To avoid damage and injuries from splashes and hot liquids, do not overfill the fondue pot or raclette dishes, especially when heating foodstuffs that will violently froth or splash. Do not place any too large pieces of food, overhanging the edges, on the grill plates or in the fondue pot. Otherwise hot fat, water or meat juice could splash and overflow and cause severe scalds and damage. Especially when preparing fondue with oil, do not dip wet or frozen ingredients in hot oil, to avoid splashes and boiling over.
1. Place the raclette on a suitable surface near a wall power outlet. (See: “Important Safeguards“) Leave at least 30 cm of free space to walls, curtains, boards and other objects on each side of the appliance. Ensure a good ventilation.
2. Ensure that there are no foreign objects in the raclette levels or fondue pot. If you do not wish to use the fondue pot, take the fondue pot out.
CAUTION: When using the fondue pot, ensure that there is ALWAYS at least 150 ml of liquid in the fondue pot. Otherwise remove the fondue pot to avoid overheating. The grill plates must be installed properly, even when not in use.
3. Ensure that the grill plates lay firmly in place on the bearing plate and will not tilt or wobble. The ribbed, coated surface must face upwards.
4. Insert the plug in a suitable wall power socket. (See: “Important Safeguards for Electrical Appliances“)
Preparing Fondue
WARNING: Risk of Burns! The exterior of the appliance, especially the grill plates and the
lid of the fondue pot, will get hot during operation! Beware of hot condensate, splashes and steam, when opening the lid.
When dipping food in hot sauces, oil and dips, the contents of the fondue pot could violently froth and splash. Thus, do not fill in more than 500 ml, when preparing fondue with oil and oily dips. Do not overfill the fondue pot! Especially, do not immerse wet and frozen foods in hot oil. Dab wet foods and defrost frozen foods, before dipping.
Additionally, beware of splashing meat juices and fat, when using the grill plates simultaneously. Always maintain a sufficient distance to the grill plates with hands and arms, even when the grill plates are not in use. Protect your hands, arms, and valuable clothes with
suitable oven gloves.
The fondue pot is not suited for frying and steaming. Only use the fondue pot with a sufficient amount of liquid to avoid overheating (at least 150 ml). Turn the FONDUE
heating control dial to the OFF position (“–”) and remove the fondue pot, when the fondue pot is empty or is not to be used.
30
Page 11
Before switching ON the appliance, always ensure that the grill plates are properly in place on the bearing plates, and will not tilt or wobble, even if the grill plates are not in use. Do not use any hard or sharp-edged objects on the raclette dishes or grill plates, to avoid damage to the non-stick coatings.
1. Fill the requested ingredients with a sufficient amount of liquid (water, oil or bouillon) in the fondue pot up to the maximum capacity of 1 Litre. When preparing fondue with oil or oily sauces, fill in up to a maximum of 500 ml. Do not overfill the fondue pot, to avoid overflowing. Defrost frozen ingredients before cooking. Dab wet foods before cooking.
2. Put on the lid. This will save energy and the contents of the fondue pot will heat up faster.
3. Place the fondue pot in the opening in the middle of the raclette. Only use the supplied fondue pot with the Design Raclette-Fondue-Set. Do not use the fondue pot with any other heating device (e.g. range).
4. Turn the FONDUE heating control dial to the desired position.
To reach high temperatures (e.g. boiling water or heating oil or fat) as fast as possible, we recommend using the maximum setting (“+” position) for both heating control dials. After the desired temperature has been reached, turn off the RACLETTE heating control dial (regulating the heating elements of the grill plates) and turn the FONDUE heating control dial to the desired position. For heating dishes that are sensitive to heat (e.g. cheese or chocolate) only use the FONDUE heating control dial.
CAUTION: When lifting off the lid of the fondue pot, beware of hot condensate that could drip from the lid and cause scalds. Additionally, the condensate could splash, when dripping on the hot grill plates.
5. As soon as the desired temperature is reached, lift off the lid and start preparing your foods. It is the best to use the supplied fondue forks. Keep in mind that the supplied fondue
forks are pointed.
Grilling
WARNING: The grill plates will be very hot during operation and even some time after ope- ration. DO NOT touch the grill plates with hands or arms or any heat-sensitive objects. Additionally, especially on placing food on the preheated grill plates, hot fat and
juices could splash from the appliance. Always keep your hands and arms as well as any other objects in sufficient distance to the appliance during operation to avoid scalds and damage. Ensure that all persons present maintain sufficient distance to the appliance during operation.
Do not cut, prick or scratch foods on the grill plates. Always remove the foods from the grill plates before cutting. Only use cooking utensils made of heat-resistant plastic or wood. The supplied fondue forks are not suited for use on the grill plates! Do not handle the appliance or any part of it with violence.
The grill plates are non-stick coated and slightly vaulted, to ensure the optimal draining of fat. This is an almost smokeless and very healthy way of cooking.
1. Ensure that the grill plates are placed properly on the bearing plate, the ribbed side facing upwards. The grill plates must not tilt or wobble.
2. Before placing food on the grill plates, set the RACLETTE heating control dial to the maximum position (“+”) and pre-heat the grill plates for about 10 minutes.
31
Page 12
3. Put the food to be cooked on the grill plates and turn the RACLETTE heating control dial to the required position. (See: “Hints for Best Results“)
4. Turn the food with the supplied grill shovel.
Do not use any hard or sharp edged objects on the grill plates!
Using the Raclette Function
WARNING: Risk of burns! Always keep in mind that the exterior of the appliance will get very
hot during operation. Especially, this holds for the grill plates. Only touch the appliance and its parts and accessories by the dials and/or handles to avoid injuries. Handle the raclette dishes with care! Do not spill any liquids in the appliance, especially when preparing runny sauces. For this, do not overfill the raclette dishes.
1. Ensure that the grill plates are placed properly on the bearing plate, the ribbed side facing upwards. The grill plates must not tilt or wobble.
2. Select the maximum position (“+”) of the RACLETTE heating control dial (heating element of the grill plates) to preheat the appliance.
3. During pre-heating you can fill the raclette dishes, but do not fill the raclette dishes more than 3/4 to the brim with liquid to avoid spilling the contents while moving the raclette dishes. DO NOT overfill the raclette dishes!
WARNING: Raclette dishes and their contents could be very hot! Only touch the raclette dishes by the handles. Do not spill the contents of the raclette dishes in the appliance, especially when inserting or removing the raclette dishes. If any liquids are spilled in the appliance, switch OFF the heating control dials, unplug and let the appliance cool down. Thereafter clean the appliance thoroughly. (See: “Care and Cleaning“)
4. After ca. 10 minutes of pre-heating, turn back the RACLETTE heating control dial to the desired setting, and avoid spilling the contents, while inserting the raclette dishes in the upper raclette level.
5. Empty raclette dishes or raclette dishes not in use can be stored in the lower raclette level.
Hints for Best Results
• The grill plates and raclette dishes are equipped with non-stick coatings. Just wipe the coating with some drops of oil before first use. Thereafter there is no need for using additional fat.
• Select a low temperature to defrost and re-heat food. Use medium temperature settings to cook seafood and scallops. Use high temperature settings (maximum position of the RACLETTE heating control dial) for meat and poultry.
• Season meat and fish before cooking, but add salt only belatedly, to keep your dishes juicy.
• Cooking times depend on variances in ingredient thickness and special liking, but do not over cook. Most meats are better served pink and juicy, and even vegetables are better, when still crisp.
• Do not throw the ingredients into the hot liquid in the fondue pot. Use the supplied fondue forks.
• The grill plates are suited best for cooking beef, pork, lamb and poultry, as well as fish fillets and vegetable or fruit slices. Tougher cuts of meat should be marinated for a few hours or overnight in a marinade with wine or vinegar to help break down the connective tissue. If necessary, remove the bones before cooking.
32
Page 13
• If using a marinade recipe or pre-marinated meats from your meat retailer, drain excess marinade off and dab with kitchen paper before placing on the grill or cooking in oil as fondue.
• When removing fish pieces from the grill plate, use the grill shovel or a flat heat-resistant plastic spatula to support the food.
• Cut cheese in slices, ca. 5 mm thick and, in the raclette dishes, place it beneath the grill plates.
• Additional raclette dishes can be used for pre-heating cheese or keeping cheese hot on the grill plates.
After Use
WARNING: Do not leave the appliance unattended while connected to the mains power supp-
ly. Even some minutes after switching off, the appliance is still hot. Always let the appliance cool down before moving, or cleaning the appliance, or removing the grill plates. Do not leave
the appliance unattended near young children.
