operating instructions carefully.
Familiarise yourself with the unit’s
features, the controls, its proper
use and the safety instructions
included.

or people who are not familiar
with these operating instructions should not use this
String Trimmer.
Please keep these operating
instructions in a safe place.
2. Information regarding the operating instructions
The GARDENA String Trimmer
has been designed for trimming
uncultivated areas, thick weeds
and tall grass in and around the
garden.
This trimmer is for private use
only and is not designed for use
in public places, parks, sport
arenas, street-scapes, in agriculture or forestry.
It is essential to observe the
manufacturer’s operating instructions to ensure the unit’s proper
functioning. These instructions
also contain advice for service,
maintenance and repair.

or for chopping up for composting.
3. Proper use
Before beginning work, fix
and adjust the enclosed safety
cover Bas well as the additional
handle 7and the shoulder strap

5.1. Connecting the String
Trimmer – cable lock /
extension cable (ill. A)
Loop the extension cable

prevents unintentional disconnection of the electricity.
To switch on, depress the pushbutton

Make sure that the cutting head
is not on the ground when switching on your String Trimmer.
The String Trimmer will switch
off as soon as the push-button
is released.

The safety devices instal-
led by the manufacturer
must not be removed or bypassed, e.g. by binding the
on/off switch to the handle or
using the String Trimmer without safety cover. This will
prevent the trimmer switching
off automatically, and may
cause serious injury.
Attention! The trimming string
will take a while to stop running
after the unit is switched off.
5.2. Working position (ill. A/A3)
Ensure that you have a secure
foothold when working. Put the
shoulder strap diagonally around
your shoulders. Hold your String
Trimmer with one hand on the
additional handle

and with the
other on the guide handle 5.
5.3. Automatic string lengthening procedure with the motor
running (ill. A /B)
Wear on the cord depends on
the individual job. When cutting
performance noticeably reduces,
filament feed is necessary. A
clean cut will only be achieved
with the maximum cord length.
Tap your String Trimmer sharply
on the ground. Avoid sustained
depression. Ensure that the
cutting head

is parallel to
ground. The string will automatically lengthen. Listen for an audible
switching action. If the strings are
too short, the String Trimmer
must be touched onto the ground
several times to ensure they extend to their optimum length. If the
strings are too long, they will be
automatically adjusted to the cor-
rect length by the string limiter
blade

5.4. Manual string lengthening

1. Disconnect the mains plug!
2. Depress the release (cutting
head cover)

and manually
pull out strings until it stops.
If necessary, repeat the action
until the strings slightly project
over the edge of the cover.
While the String Trimmer is
being operated, the string length
is adjusted automatically as described under “Automatic string
lengthening”.

5. Using the product (ill. A-C)
The GARDENA String Trimmer
require mimimal maintenance.
Make sure that the cooling air
inlets

Remove grass clippings and dirt
with a dry cloth or brush. Remove
grass clippings and dirt from the
safety cover

Repairs may only be carried
out by GARDENA Service
Centres or dealers authorised

Attention! Always disconnect the mains plug
before working on the String
Trimmer (checking, cleaning,
maintenance). Risk of injury!
To avoid injury to persons and
product damage: Ne
ver clean
the String Trimmer with running
water, in particular a high pressure water jet.
Store the String Trimmer in a
dry place where it is protected
from frost.
We recommend hanging
storage to avoid unnecessary
stress on the cutting head.
The String Trimmer should
be stored out of the reach of
children.
Follow the manufacturer’s
instructions when replacing
the string.
6.1. How to replace the string
Please use only the original
GARDENA Replacement String,
Art. No. 5374.
You can order this string from
your GARDENA dealer or directly
from the GARDENA customer
service.
Never use metallic cutting
cartridges or spare parts and
accessories which have not
been defined by the manufacturer!

Disassembly (ill. A/D/ F)
1. Disconnect the mains plug!
Be careful with the string
limiter blade 0. Risk of
injury!
2. Keep the cutting head (a) in
a fixed position and open the
cutting head cover (b) by turning clockwise as shown in
illustration D.
3. Remove the reel (c).
Remove any remaining string.
Note (ill. E):
If the pressure spring is loose (d)
you can fix it in the reel (c) to
facilitate assembly. For this insert
the pressure spring (d) into the
reel (c) and secure by turning
clockwise.
Assembly (ill. C/E/F/G)
1. Introduce the replacement
string (6 m) into the slit of the
partition of the reel so that
two equal lengths (3 m each)
hang out (ill. E).
2. Wind first the upper string (a),
then the lower string (b) clockwise onto the reel.
Note: Wind both strings evenly
and firmly. Fix approx. 10 cm
of each of the string ends in the
slits marked with ∅∅2 opposite
each other according to ill. F.
3. Thread the string ends outwards through the eyelets of
the cutting head (a) (ill. G).
Note: When inserting the
string ends, make sure that the
slits with the fixed strings are
exactly behind the eyelets.
4. Insert the reel and pull both
string ends at the same time
until they have noticeably
come out of the slits.
5. (ill. G) Press the reel (c) down
onto the spring (d) and secure
the cutting head cover (b) by
turning anticlockwise until it
stops.
6. (ill. C) To check for proper function depress the cutting head
cover

and pull both string
ends at the same time. If the
unit operates properly both
strings will lengthen. If the
cutting strings are too long,
they will be automatically adjusted to the correct length
by the string limiter blade

when the String Trimmer is
being operated.

7. Trouble-shooting
If you have any problem with your
String Trimmer, please contact
our Customer Service or return
the defective unit together with
a short description of the problem
and, if covered under guarantee,
with a copy of the receipt, directly
to one of the GARDENA Service
Centres listed on the back of
this leaflet.
We expressly point out that,
in accordance with the product
liability law, we are not liable
for any damage caused by our
units if it is due to improper
repair or if parts exchanged are
not original GARDENA parts
or parts approved by us, and,
if the repairs were not carried
out by a GARDENA Service
Centre or an authorised specialist. The same applies to
spare parts and accessories.

disposed of properly.

Inspect the unit
before each use
Inspect the unit before each
use. Do not use the String
Trimmer if safety devices
(safety handle; safety cover)
and/or the cutting devices are
damaged or worn. Never operate the unit with the safety
devices by-passed or missing.
Inspect the area to be cut before and during work. Remove
any foreign objects such as
stones.
If, in spite of care, you come
into contact with an obstruction whilst cutting, turn off
the trimmer and remove it.
Check the unit for possible
damage and have it repaired,
if necessary.
A Use/Responsibility
This String Trimmer can cause
serious injuries!
Use the unit only for purposes
specified in these operating
instructions.
You are responsible for the
safety in the working area.
Make sure that there are no
other people (especially children) or animals within or near
the working area.
Never use the String Trimmer
if safety devices are damaged
or defective!
After use disconnect the mains
plug. Check the String Trimmer,
especially the filament cassette
regularly and replace it if necessary. Make sure that the
cutting head cover is properly
seated on the cutting head. The
cutting head must be regularly
checked. In case of noticeable
changes examine immediatel
y
the cutting head for damage.
Never repair damages on the
cutting head, but replace the
cutting head even if there are
only hair line cracks.
Wear eye and ear protection !
Wear sturdy shoes and long
trousers to protect your legs.
Keep fingers and feet away
from the cutting string – especially when starting work.
Ensure that you have secure
foothold whilst working. The
electrical cable should always
be kept away from the cutting
area.
Attention! Take extra care
when walking backwards.
You may stumble.
Only work when visibility is
good.
The Sense is fitted with a speed
control for noise reduction.
This causes the mower to turn
at a reduced speed when idling
without load.

Never leave the String Trimmer
unattended in the working
place. If you stop work, store
the trimmer in a safe place.
Disconnect the mains plug!
Should you stop work in order
to get to another working place,
always switch off the Trimmer,
wait until the tool stops and
disconnect the mains plug!
A Work place safety
Make yourself familiar with the
surroundings and look out for
dangers which you may not
detect due to machinery noise.
Never use the unit when it
rains or in damp/wet areas.
Do not operate the String
Trimmer in or near swimming
pools and garden ponds.
A Electrical safety
Check the power cable regularly for damage and signs
of wear and tear.
The String Trimmer must
only be operated with an undamaged electric cable. If
the mains- or extension cable
is damaged, disconnect the
mains plug immediately.
The socket of an extension
cable should be waterproof.
Only use permitted extension
cables. Ask your electrician.
For portable units which are
used outdoors, we recommend
to use a residual-current device
having a residual-current rating ≤ 30 mA.
In Switzerland use of a
residual-current device is
obligatory.

guarantee we will either replace
the unit or repair it free of charge

the operating instructions.
.Neither the purchaser or a
non-authorised third party
have attempted to repair

The string and the cutting head
cover are wearing parts and are
not covered by the guarantee.
This manufacturer’s guarantee

existing warranty claims against

L’intervento in garanzia non
estende in nessun caso il periodo iniziale.

defectos de materiales o de fabricación. La garantía se efectúa
mediante intercambio por un
artículo en perfectas condiciones
o mediante la reparación gratuita
de la pieza enviada, según
nuestro criterio, sólo en el caso
de que se hayan cumplido los
siguientes requisitos:
.El aparato fue manipulado
correctamente y según las
indicaciones del manual de
instrucciones.
.Ni el cliente ni terceros inten-
taron repararlo.
El hilo y la tapa del cabezal
son piezas de desgaste y están
excluidas de la garantía.
Esta garantía del fabricante
no afectará la existente entre
distribuidor/vendedor.

A GARDENA garante este produto durante 2 anos (a contar da
data de aquisição). Esta garantia
cobre essencialmente todos
os defeitos do aparelho que se
provem ser devido ao material
ou falhas de fabrico. Dentro da
garantia nós trocaremos ou
re-pararemos o aparelho gratuitamente se as seguintes condições
tiverem sido cumpridas:
.O aparelho foi utilizado de
uma forma correcta e segundo
os conselhos do manual de
instruções.
.Nunca o proprietário, nem
um terceiro, estranho aos
serviços GARDENA, tentou
reparar o aparelho.
O fio de corte e a cobertura
da cabeça de corte sendo peças
de degaste não estão cobertas
pela garantia.
Esta garantia do fabricante
não afecta as existentes queixas
de garantia contra o agente/
vendedor.
