Please read these operating instructions carefully and observe the notes given. Use these
operating instructions to familiarise yourself with the Electric Lawn Rake, its proper use
and the notes on safety.

This product may be used under super vision, or if instruction regard­ing the safe use of the product has been provided and the resulting
dangers have been understood, by children aged 8 and above, as well
as by persons with physical, sensory or mental disabilities or a lack
of experience and knowledge. Children must not be allowed to play
with the product. Cleaning and user maintenance must not be per­formed by children without supervision. The use of this product by
young people under the age of 16 is not recommended.

1. Where to Use Your GARDENA Electric Lawn Rake

Intended use: The GARDENA Electric Lawn Rake ES 500 is designed for

aerating lawns and grassy areas in private domestic and hobby
gardens. It is not designed for use in public facilities, parks,
sporting grounds, on roads, in agriculture or forestry.

Compliance with these instructions provided by GARDENA is
aprerequisite for using the Electric Lawn Rake correctly.

Please note:

Attention! To prevent injury, the Electric Lawn Rake must
notbe used for trimming bushes, hedges and shrubs.
In addition, the Electric Lawn Rake must not be used for
levelling irregularities in the soil.

1. General

This annex presents safe operating practices for all
machine types covered by this standard.

IMPORTANT!
READ CAREFULLY BEFORE USE.
KEEP FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.

2. Safe operating practices for scarifiers / aerators

2.1 Training

a) Read the instructions carefully. Be familiar with the

controls and the correct use of the equipment.

b) Never allow children or people unfamiliar with

these instructions to use the machine. Local regu­lations can restrict the age of the operator.

c) Keep in mind that the operator or user is respon-

sible for accidents or hazards occurring to other
people or their property.

2.2 Preparation

a) Wear ear protection and safety glasses at all times

while operating the machine.

b) Before use check the supply and extension cord

for signs of damage or aging. If the cord becomes
damaged during use, disconnect the cord from the
supply immediately.

DO NOT TOUCH THE CORD BEFORE
DISCONNECTING THE SUPPLY.

Do not use the machine if the cord is damaged or
worn.

c) While operating the machine always wear substan-

tial footwear and long trousers. Do not operate the
machine when barefoot or wearing open sandals.
Avoid wearing clothing that is loose fitting or that
has hanging cords or ties.

d) Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment

is to be used and remove all objects which can be
thrown by the machine.

e) Operate the machine in a recommended position

and only on a firm, level surface.

f) Do not operate the machine on a paved or gravel

surface where ejected material could cause injury.

g) Before starting the machine, check that all screws,

nuts, bolts, and other fasteners are properly
secured and that guards and screens in place.
Replace damaged or unreadable labels.

h) Never operate the machine while people,

especially children, or pets are nearby.

2.3 Operation

a) Operate the machine only in daylight or in good

artificial light.
b) Avoid operating the machine in wet grass.
c) Always be sure of your footing at all times, espe-

cially on slopes.

d) Walk, never run.
e) Mow across the face of slopes, never up and

down.

f) Exercise extreme caution when changing direction

on slopes.
g) Do not scarify or aerate excessively steep slopes.
h) Use extreme caution when reversing or pulling the

machine towards you.
i) Stop the tines if the machine has to be tilted for

transportation when crossing surfaces other than

grass, and when transporting the machine to and

from the area to be used.
j) Never operate the machine with defective guards

or shields, or without safety devices, for example

deflectors and/or grass collector, in place.
k) Switch on the motor carefully according to instruc-

tions and with feet well away from the tines.
l) Keep supply and extension cord away from tines.
m) Do not tilt machine when switching on the motor,

except if the machine has to be tilted for starting.

In this case, do not tilt it more than absolutely nec-

essary and lift only the part which is away from the

operator. Always ensure that both hands are in the

operating position before returning the machine to

the ground.
n) Do not transport the machine while the power

source is running.
o) Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating

parts. Keep clear of the discharge opening at all

times.
p) Stop the machine, and remove plug from the

socket. Make sure that all moving parts have

come to a complete stop:

1) whenever you leave the machine,

2) before clearing blockages or unclogging chute,

3) before checking, cleaning or working on the

machine,

4) after striking a foreign object. Inspect the

machine for damage and make repairs before
restarting and operating the machine;

if the machine starts to vibrate abnormally
(check immediately):

5) inspect for damage,

6) replace or repair any damaged parts,

7) check for and tighten any loose parts.

2.4 Maintenance and storage

a) Keep all nuts, bolts and screws tight to be sure the

equipment is in safe working condition.
b) Check the debris collector frequently for wear or

deterioration.
c) Replace worn or damaged parts for safety.

d) On machines with multiple tine assemblies, take

care as rotating one tine assembly can cause
another tine assembly to rotate.

e) Be careful during adjustment of the machine to

prevent entrapment of the fingers between moving
tine assemblies and fixed parts of the machine.

f) Always allow the machine to cool down before

storing.

g) When servicing the tine assembly be aware that,

even though the power source is switched off, the
tine assembly can still be moved.

h) Replace worn or damaged parts for safety. Use

only genuine replacement parts and accessories.

i) When the machine is stopped for servicing,

inspection, or storage, or to change an accessory,
shut off the power source, disconnect the machine
from the supply and make sure that all moving
parts are come to a complete stop. Allow the
machine to cool before making any inspections,
adjustments, etc. Maintain the machine with care
and keep it clean.

j) Store the machine out of the reach of children.

2.5 Recommendation

The machine should be supplied via a residual current
device (RCD) with a tripping current of not more than
30 mA.

Electrical safety

WARNING! Electric shock!

Risk of injury due to electric shock.

Disconnect the product from the mains before you
do maintenance or you replace parts. Thereby the
disconnected socket must be in the visual range.

Cables

If extension cables are used, these must comply with
the minimum cross-sections in the table below:

1. Mains cables and extensions are available from
your local Approved Service Centre.

2. Only use extension cables specifically designed
for outdoor use and which conform to one of
the following specifications: Ordinary rubber
(60245 IEC 53), Ordinary PVC (60227 IEC 53) or
Ordinary PCP (60245 IEC 57).

3. If the short connection lead is damaged, it must be
replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent or
similarly qualified persons in order to avoid a hazard.

Attachment fittings must be used for extension cables.
In Switzerland use of a residual-current device is

obligatory.

Checks before each use

v Inspect the Electric Lawn Rake before eachuse.

For safety reasons, allow all worn out and damaged
parts to be exchanged by GARDENA Service or
authorised specialist dealers.

Proper use / Responsibility

DANGER! Risk of injury!

The Electric Lawn Rake can cause serious

injuries!

v Keep hands and feet away from the aerator cylinder.
v During use do not tip the unit and do not open the

rear flap.

v Familiarise yourself with the surroundings of your

working area. Check for possible risks which might
be not audible due to the noise of the machine.

v Always push the Electric Lawn Rake at awalking

pace.

v Attention! Take extra care when walking back-

wards. You may stumble!

v Do not use the Electric Lawn Rake if it is raining or

in moist, wet conditions.

v Do not use the product when a thunderstorm is

approaching.

v Do not work close to the edge of swimming pools

or garden ponds with the Electric Lawn Rake.

v Please observe any local restrictions relating to

noise levels.

Do not overload the product.

This product is not intended for long term use.
Don’t work until exhaustion.
Do not operate the product in explosive atmospheres,

such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or
dust. The product can create sparks which may ignite

the dust or fumes.
Never operate the product when you are tired, ill or

under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medicine.

WARNING! Cardiac arrest!

This product makes an electromagnetic field while
it operates. This field may under some conditions
interfere with active or passive medical implants. To
decrease the risk of conditions that can possibly injure
or kill, we recommend persons with medical implants
to speak with their physician and the medical implant
manufacturer before you operate the product.

Risk of suffocation!

Small could be swallowed during assembly and
there is a risk of suffocation from the poly bag.
Scrap the plastic bags immediately after assembling
the product.

3. Function

Correct aerating: The Electric Lawn Rake can be used for removing matting and

moss in the lawn as well as for cutting flat-rooting ranks.
To maintain a well-cared-for lawn we recommend aerating every

4– 6 weeks depending on the state of your lawn.

v First of all, mow your lawn to the length you require.

We particularly recommend this if the grass has grown tall
(e.g. while you were away on holiday).

Recommendation: the shorter you mow your lawn, the easier
it is to aerate, thus lessening the strain on the Electric Lawn
Rake and increasing the lifetime of the aerator cylinder.

Remaining in one spot too long, or aerating if the ground is wet or
too dry can damage the grass.

v For good results, guide the Electric Lawn Rake at an

appropriate speed in strips as straight as possible across
yourlawn.

To avoid leaving any gaps during aerating, the strips should
touch.

v Always guide the Electric Lawn Rake at an even speed

depending on the type of ground.

v When working on inclines always stand diagonally to the

incline in a sturdy, safe stance. Do not work on extremely
steep slopes.

Danger of tripping!
To prevent tripping take particular care when moving

backwards and when pulling the Electric Lawn Rake.

When aerating areas of very mossy lawn we recommend resowing
the lawn after aerating. This helps the areas of lawn which were
replaced by moss to regenerate more quickly.

v Do not remove or bridge safety devices fitted to the

Electric Lawn Rake (e.g. by tying the starting lever to

DANGER! The Electric Lawn Rake does not stop
immediately after the motor has been switched off:

v Never lift, tip or carry the Electric Lawn Rake with

the motor running!

v Never start on solid ground (e.g. asphalt).
v Always maintain the safety distance between the

aerator cylinder and the user as defined by the
guide handle.

6. Maintenance

Blockage Protection: If the aerator cylinder is blocked, e.g. by
a foreign body, immediately release the starting lever. If the
blockage lasts longer than 10 seconds and the starting lever has
not been released, blockage protection is activated. In this case
immediately release the starting lever. The Lawn Rake can be
switched on again after cooling down for approx. 1 minute.

v Prior to maintenance, unplug from the mains and

wait until the Electric Lawn Rake drum has stopped.

v Wear working gloves for performing maintenance.

Cleaning Electric Lawn Rake: The Electric Lawn Rake should be cleaned after each time it is used.

The Electric Lawn Rake is subject to wear in use due to the way
in which it works. The more intensively the Electric Lawn Rake is
used, the greater the wear on the spring tines. Hard or very dry
ground accelerates wear as does excessive use of the Electric
Lawn Rake.

If the results of your work with the Electric Lawn Rake become
increasingly worse due to knife wear, the aerator cylinder can be
adjusted twice.

The aerator cylinder has 4 adjustment positions:

• Transport position

• Aerating position 1

• Aerating position 2:

If the springs are worn (the rake roller is lowered by 3 mm).

• Setting 3:

Second setting for worn springs (the rake roller is lowered by

Note: Wear adjustment is not used for height adjustment.
Adjustment of the aerator cylinder without visible wear can
cause damage to the aerator cylinder or overload the motor.

7. Trouble-Shooting

Replacing spring tines: DANGER! The aerator cylinder can cause injuries!

v Prior to rectifying faults, unplug from the mains

and wait until the aerator cylinder has stopped.

v Wear working gloves when rectifying faults.

If the aerator cylinder is not yet worn but individual springs have
broken, these must be replaced. Only original GARDENA replace-
ment springs may be used.

8. Storage

To put into storage: To save space the Electric Lawn Rake can be folded up by

GARDENA Manufacturing GmbH warranties this
product for 2 years (from date of purchase).
This warranty includes all significant defects of
the product that can be proved to be material or
manufacturing faults. Under warranty we will
replace the product or repair it for no cost if
these conditions are applicable:

• The product must have been used properly and
in keeping with the requirements of the operati­on instructions.

• Neither the purchaser or a not approved third
party have tried to repair the product.

This manufacturer’s warranty does not have an
effect on the user’s existing warranty claims
against the dealer / seller.

If you have problems with this product, please
contact our Service or send the defective pro­duct together with a short description of the
problem – if there is a warranty, with a copy of
the receipt – postage paid to GARDENA
Manufacturing GmbH.

Consumables:

The rake springs, are consumables and are not
included in the warranty.
