Instruction Manual The FMI J Instruction Manual
FULTON MUSICAL INDUSTRIES 4420 Zane Avenue North Mlnneapolis, Minnesota 55422
The PAH Series J is composed of four speaker modules and a cover cube. Each module is designed to fit a specific physical and sonic place in the J configuration. Misplacing the various parts will have an adverse audible affect on the sound quality. Therefore, follow the directions and illustrations carefully
Setup Instruction
Refer to FIG. 1 and 2.
1. Start by placing the cover cube atop the J woofer. Locate the left woofer on the left side of the room and the right woofer on the right side of the room. See FIG. 1. Note the drivers are toward the center.
2. Place the FMI 80PJ inside the cover cube and in front of the location bar. See FIG. 1 The woofer and of the FMI 80 should be toward the center and flush with the end of the locating bar. See FIG. 1 and 2.
3. Place the Main Tweeter module atop the FMI 80 wlth the level controls toward the center. See FIG. 3. The front of the module should be flush with the front of the FMI 80. See FIG.2. As shown in FIG. 1, the module is shifted toward the center 1 3/8 Inches.
4. Place the Astro-tweeter atop the Main Tweeter module flush against the outside edges as shown in FIG. 1 and 2.
5. As viewed from the front, all the drivers should line up vertically and towardthe center as shown in FIG. 1.
Wiring instructions
Refer to FIG. 3.
1. Locate the box of six FMI Interconnecting leads.
2. Connect the wire from the Astro-tweeter to the RCA phone jack in the center of the Main Tweeter module terminal strip.
3. Connect an interconnecting lead from the Main Tweeter terminal strip to the top terminal strip in the J woofer.
4. 4 Connect an Interconnecting lead from the FMI 80 terminals to the second from the top terminal strip in the J woofer.
5. Connect an interconnecting lead from the Iso-tweeter terminals to the second from the bottom terminal strip in the J woofer.

6. Connect the power amplifier to the bottom terminal strip in the J woofer.
7. Always observe the proper polarify to insure the correct phasing of all the drivers. Make all connections positive to positive and negative to negative. The interconnecting leads are ribbed on one side for easy identification of polarity.
Specifications and Operational notes
The various drivers in the PAH Series J and the frequencies handled by each are as follows.
1. Astro-tweeter 16,000 - 52,000 HZ Fixed level
2. Iso-tweeter 12,000 - 44,000 HZ Fixed level
3. Atmo-tweeters 6,800 - 24,000 HZ Variable level
4. Dyna-tweeter 2,400 - 6,000 HZ Variable level
5. EM1 8OPJ 375 - 2,400 RZ Variable level
6. Upper woofer 68 - 375 HZ Variable level
7. Mid-woof er 32 - 68 Hz Adjustable level
8. Sub-woofer 13 - 32 Hz Fixed level
The variable level controls affect the span of frequencies from 68 t o 24,000 Hz. The mid -base woofer, 32 to 68 Hz, is affected by a three position adjustable level control. The flexibility afforded by these controls enables the user to match the speakers to the acoustical environment of the listening room, and to the characteristics of the electronics I n use. The most satisfactory results are achieved when only the finest associated equipment is used with the J's. It is also recommended that the J's be powered by a single high quality power amplifier. However, bi-amped, tri-amped, and tetra-amped configurations are possible.
The wires from the power amp to the J's must be of superior quality and of equal length. The minimum required for adequate performance is a No. 12 gauge, tinned, stranded, copper wire. The Fulton Gold cable is highly recommended for use with the J's.
Positioning the J's in the listening room
Proper positioning of the J's in the listening room is essential to realisation of their full potential. Since both rooms and electronics vary, some careful listening and experimentation will be necessary to find the ideal position.
A good starting point is to locate the J's parallel to a solid wall, approximately 45 inches apart and between 4 to 12 inches from the wall. When properly positioned, one should be able to hear a complete stereo

perspective while seated in front of either side, am well as in the center. The distance between the J's and the wall is important for optimum performance of the subwoofer. Variations in its sonic qualities can be made by moving the J closer of further from the wall.
Avoid boxing the J's into corners or locating them near doorways, closets or fireplaces. These locations tend to reduce the effectiveness of the subwoofer. Avoid locating the J1s near anything that may rattle or break, such as loosely panelled walls or expensive china! On deep plush carpeting, the J's may tend to lean forward as they are slightly front heavy. In this case, the front of the pedestal should be propped up so they will stand level.
Setting control
After properly positioning the J's in the listening room and after careful listening to varied material, some additional fine tuning may be necessary to achieve desirable performance. The important consideration when control adjustments is to strive for perfect blend and balance between the modules. The system should sound smooth from top to bottom with no one section ton loud or soft. This may take more experimentation. In an acoustically "live" room, it may be necessary to adjust the level controls downward. In an acoustically "dead" room, they may be adjusted upward. Adjustments may also be neceesary to compensate for certain characteristics of the electronics used. A small adjustment of the oontrols will also cause noticeable differences in tonal structure as well as level. Changinq the position of the J's in the room or the introduction of new or different peripheral equipment will also require further refinements In control settings. In general, try to avoid frequent or large adjustments of the controls. Listen to varied program material until the same imbalances become apparent on each program. Then make small adjustments and listen again.
We are convinoed that once your J system has been properly set up and is used with the finest available electronics, many enjoyable listening experiences will be yours. We welcome your comments and thank you for choosing the FMI-J Music System.

All the level controls are variable exoept the midwoofer control which has three positions, low, medium, high. The variable controls are like clocks, Minimum level is about 7:00. Maximum is about 5:00.
