Introduction

SLR100SLR 50/100 GBYTE is a drive for magnetic tape cartridges with a storage capacity of 50 Gbyte (without compression) or 100 Gbyte (with 2:1 compression).
The drive is an inexpensive mass storage which is especially suited for the following applications:
Backup of hard disk drives
Data archiving
Data exchange
Software distribution
Emergency recovery
The drive has an SCSI interface of the type Ultra Wide LVD/SE (Low Voltage Differential or SingleEnded). Therefore, in order to operate the drive the computer must have a SCSI host adapter and the appropriate SCSI drivers must be installed.
This manual contains all the information you require to install and operate the drive.
Target group
To install the drive, you need some knowledge of hardware. Make sure you observe the instructions in the "Important notes" chapter of your system unit's Operating Manual.
In the event of any problems occurring, please contact your sales outlet or our customer service center.
Further information
For details of the drive mounting procedure refer to the Operating Manual or Technical Manual of your system unit.
Information on the SCSI host adapter is contained in the Technical Manual of the SCSI host adapter or in the Operating Manual or Technical Manual of your system unit.
For information on the required SCSI drivers and the backup software, refer to the software documentation.

Notational conventions

The meanings of the symbols and fonts used in this manual are as follows:
Pay particular attention to texts marked with this symbol. Failure to observe this warning endangers your life, destroys the system, or may lead to loss of data.
!
Supplementary information, remarks and tips follow this symbol.
i
Ê Texts which follow this symbol describe activities that must be performed in the order shown.
"Quotation marks" indicate names of chapters, disks and terms that are being emphasized.

Important notes

In this chapter you will find information regarding safety which is essential to take note of with your drive.
!

Safety

This device complies with the relevant safety regulations for data processing equipment, including electronic office machines for use in an office environment. If you have any questions, contact your sales outlet or our customer service center.
This device has been developed for use in approved systems with a fire-proof casing (in
accordance with IEC 950 / EN 60950).
Note the power loss and the notes on environmental conditions in the "Important notes"
chapter of the system unit's Operating Manual.

Manufacturer's note

CE certificate
The shipped version of this drive complies with the requirements of the EC Guideline 89/336/EEC "Electromagnetic compatibility".
Compliance was tested in a typical system configuration. When installing the drive, observe the specific installation notes in the Operating
Manual or Technical Manual of the receiving device.

Installation

Please note the information provided in the chapter "Important notes" in the Operating Manual of the system unit or in the manual "Safety, Guarantee and Ergonomics".
!
The following steps must be performed to install the drive:
Setting the jumpers (e. g. SCSI address, parity)
Mounting the drive
Connecting the drive
Installing the software required (drivers, backup program)
The drivers required for operating SCSI drives are either part of the operating system or are provided with the backup software.

Setting the jumpers

There is a jumper block on the back of the drive with 16 jumpers. These default settings depend on the relevant system configuration.
TEST
The OUT, IN and TEST CONN jumpers are reserved and may not be changed.

Termination/terminating resistor
The last device at both ends of the SCSI bus must be equipped with a terminating resistor. Devices that are not connected to the end of the SCSI bus must not be terminated.
If you run the SLR drive as the last device on the SCSI bus, you must connect an active wide SCSI terminating resistor to the SCSI interface of the drive. The active wide SCSI terminating resistor can either already have been integrated in the SCSI cable or be connected as a separate connector.
The drive has no integrated terminating resistor.

Handling magnetic tape cartridges

The maximum capacity of 50/100 Gbyte is reached, for example, when a cartridge of the type "SLR100" is used.
The following table shows the possible uses of other cartridge types in various drives (w = write, r = read.) The recording density is automatically adjusted by the drive.

Magnetic tape cartridges and cleaner cartridges (dry cleaning) for the drive can be ordered directly from:
i
Siemens Plus Sales Office Telephone: Germany 0180 52 52 723, Fax: 0180 52 52 72 or via Internet http://www.siemensplus.de
Although magnetic tape cartridges do not require any special maintenance, some basic rules should be followed:
The cartridges must never be stored in high temperatures.
!
The cartridges are not to be stored or operated in high-humidity and in dusty environments.
The cartridges must be kept out of direct sunlight. The cartridges are not to be placed near magnetic fields. Do not turn off the system or remove the cartridge from the streamer when the tape drive
is reading from or writing to the cartridge. Always leave the protective cover over the opening for the write/read head. Never touch
the magnetic tape. Always observe the conditions for storing archiving cartridges (see the chapter "Technical
data").
Always keep the cartridges in the protective covers provided. New cartridges should be acclimatized to the ambient temperature up to four hours prior
to use. As a rule, new cartridges should be wound forward once to the end of the tape and
rewound to the beginning, and the drive then cleaned using a cleaning cartridge (see the chapter "Cleaning".)
Inserting a tape cartridge
When inserting the tape cartridge, ensure that the label side is facing up. The side on which the magnetic tape is visible must be on the right.
!
Ê Slide the cartridge slowly into the drive until the autoload mechanism starts pulling the cartridge
in.
Once initialization has been completed, the "Ready" indicator is illuminated.
Removing a tape cartridge
Ê Push the eject button.
The ongoing command is terminated and buffered data will be written to the tape. Depending on the application, the inserted cartridge will be rewound. This may take up to three minutes. The cartridge will then be ejected from the unloading mechanism.
Ê Remove the tape cartridge from the drive.
The eject button can be locked using an SCSI command (Prevent Media Removal).
!
If a magnetic tape cartridge cannot be removed from the drive in the way described, and the eject button is not locked, please contact our customer service center.
A26361-H583-Z100-1-7419 English - 9
Page 18
SLR 25/50 Gbyte
Using write protection
Write protection should be enabled whenever you wish to protect the tape from accidental overwriting or deletion.
When the tape cartridge is write-protected, the system can read data, but can neither overwrite nor delete data.
The write protection facility consists of a screw with an arrow. If you turn the screw by means of a screwdriver, the write protection is enabled or disabled.
If the arrow points to this symbol, the cartridge is not write-protected.
If the arrow points to this symbol, the cartridge is write-protected.

Cleaning

To guarantee error-free data processing, cleaning of the write/read heads is requested by the drive via the "Fault" indicator on a regular basis after approximately 50 hours of tape operation. The cleaning prompt may also be made sooner if the write/read heads are particularly soiled.
Only use cleaning cartridges (dry cleaning) of the type "TDS DPCC 6000" (for where to order, see the section "Handling magnetic tape cartridges").
!
Do not carry out wet cleaning!
