Explanatory information about stan
dard ISO 9241-307
Explanatory information abou
t
standard ISO 9241-307
Permanently unlit or lit pixels
Today’s production techniques cannot guarantee an absolutely fault-free screen display. Depending on the total number of pixels (resolution), there may be a few constantly lit or unlit pixels or subpixels.
Pixel
A pixel consists of 3 subpixels, normally red, green and blue. A pixel is the smallest element that can be generated by complete functionality of the display.
Subpixel
A subpixel is a separately addressable internal structure within a pixel that enhances the pixel function.
The maximum permitted number of faulty pixels is stipulated in the international standard ISO 9241-307. In accord ance with standard ISO 9241-3, LCD monitors by Fujitsu comply with Class II for low resolutions and Class I for r esolutions of 1680 x 1050 (1764000 pixel) and higher.
Examples:
A at-screen monitor with a resolution of 1280 x 1024 has 1280 x 1024 = 1310720 pixels. Each pixe l consists of three subpixels (red, green and blue), so there are almost 3.9 million subpixels in total. According to ISO 9241-3 (Class II), a maximum of 3 lit and 3 unlit pixels plus 7 lit or 13 unlit subpixels, or a corresp onding combination, may be faulty (1 lit subpixel counts as two unlit subpixels).
A at-screen monitor with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 has 1920 x 1080 = 2073600 pixels. Each pixe l consists of three subpixels (red, green and blue), so there are almost 6.2 million subpixels in total. According to ISO 9241-3 (Class I), a maximum of 2 lit and 2 unlit pixels plus 5 lit or 10 unlit subpixels, or a corresp onding combination, may be faulty (1 lit subpixel counts as two unlit subpixels).

Firmware Update
It is always recommended to use the latest available version of rmware on your FUTRO DC20-1 device. Each installation of vSpace includes the latest rmware, so no additional downloads are necessary to complete this pro cess. The rmware may be "pulled or pushed" to the device by the vSpace software. Both methods are given below:
Pulling a new rmware version:
To pull a new rmware versio
n, start the Device Setup screen.
In the Update tab, check the Automatic Firmware Update checkbox.Click Apply or Update Now t
o initiate the rmware update process.
Follow the on-screen prompts, if necessary.
Pushing a new rmware version:
With vSpace 6, you can launch the NC Console application directly from the Start menu (Start/All Programs/NComputing vSpace/NC-Console).
To push a new rmware version, use the NC Console application.Once in the console navigate to Terminals - L-Series and locate the desired FUTRO DC20-1
device in the right-hand pane.
You can select multi
ple devices at the same time: H old down the
SHIFT
or
CTRL
keys
while selecting dev
ices and then apply the update to the group of devices at one time
Right-click this device, select Update Firmware and follow the onscreen prompts to initiate
the rmware update.
Once the rmware update is complete, the device automatically restarts.
Note that some older builds of rmware (prior to version 1.00.00) must be updated twice to reach the latest version of rmware.
Repeat the rmware update process above until either the device reports no newer rmware
found, orthermware version (found in the Device Information screen in the device rm ware
or in the NC Console) matches that provided in the vSpace release notes for your version of software.
To conrm the version of rmware on multiple devices, click the Columns buttonintheNC
Console and select Firmware.
This view will show the rmware version of the discovered L-series devices.
Please ensure that you have updated to the latest vSpace software and device firmware.

Client Access License (CAL) Installation
For multi-user applications - in addition to installing and activating the Windows Server operating system license on the host system and acquiring Wind ows Server CALs for each user or device - you will also need to install Remote Desktop Services CALs (RDS-CALs, wh en running on Windows Server) or Windows MultiPoint Server CALs (WMS-CALs, when running on Windows MultiPoint Server) f or each user or device accessing the system.
Windows Server:
For Windows Server operating systems, you will need to rst add the Remote Desktop Licensing Server role (provided with the operating system) to at least one host in your environment. A ft er you install the licensing server on a particular host, you will use the Remote Desktop Licensing Manager app lication to activate the server and add RDS C AL s. Other hosts in your environment can then point to this license server
Windows MultiPoint Server:
For Windows MultiPoint Server, the licensing server component is pre-installed and yo u can simply use the MultiPoint Manager application to enter in your WMS CALs (instead of using the Remot e Desktop Licensing Manager which does not accept WMS CALs). For further details on setting up the license server and installing CALs, please refer to your operating system documentation.

Multimedia Codec and Player Setup
A key component to enabling your video les to stream properly is installing the appropriate codec’s and using video players that have been congured to properly utilize vSpace transcoding and Microsoft’s DirectSh ow® API. Video streaming in theFUTRO DC20-1 has been optimized for the DirectShow graphics pipeline and the video players must be congured to match.
To ensure that your streaming media les work optimally on your FUTRO DC20-1, you will need to apply these instructions to your host. Once you complete these steps that ensure that the codec’s are congured properly th en the following Video Players should support the le formats mentioned in the FUTRO DC20-1 multimedia overview:
Windows Media® Player (preinstalled with the OS)
Media Player Classic (preinstalled with vSpace)
(optionally) VLC Media Player Other video players may be used but they and their codec’s must be congured to use the
DirectShow API to realize the maximum performance of the FUTRO DC20-1.
FUTRO DC20-1 Multimedia Acceleration
The FUTRO DC20-1 will display f ull screen streaming video and multi-media applications across multiple user sessions and is optimized to do so using the vSpace transcoding process.
Windows displaying video and multi-media applications are dynamically detected by vSpace and then transcoded for transport to the FUTRO DC20-1 device using the UXP network protocol.
The d etection and transcoding process can take a second or two to engage, during which time media will no t be fully accelerated. A short black or blue icker will precede the multimedia acceleration – this is normal.
You can control whether the acceleration engages or not for non-media player
applications via the NC Tray application located in the W indows system tray, by selecting or deselecting Browser a cceleration.

To add a group, the user must e nter a group name; up to four hosts can immediately be added to the group, these are entered with their host names or IP addresses.
After a group has been created, the user can change the group to add hosts, to remove them or change the group name. To be able to trap failure scenarios in a exible way, a server may be a member of several groups, it can also be contained in the same connection group more than once.
Fujitsu Technology Solutions 33

Using the FUTRO DC20-1
Connection group – Auto Failover
FUTRO DC20-1 has an auto-connect function w hich offers extended control options for customers who need them.
If the FUTRO DC20-1 was congured for Autoconnect, at every switch on or o ff and every time a user logs out, the device automatically connects with the vSpace server which is specied under the autoconnect parameters.
FUTRO DC20-1 adds the concept of the server group to the autoconnect function, which in turn arranges for the auto-rollover function.
A vSpace server group is a group of one or more individual vSpace servers identied by a name which is actively dened by each FUTRO DC20-1 setup interface.
If a server group only contains one name (or IP address), FUTRO DC20-1 continues to attempt to connect with this server until it succeeds or until FUTRO DC20-1 is reset. If the server group contains more than one n ame (or IP address), FUTRO DC20-1 tries for 5 seconds to connect with the rst server. If this is not successful, FUTRO DC 20-1 tries to make a connection with the second server in the list (i.e. the device starts an auto-rollover to the next server ).
If after 5 seconds, FUTRO DC20-1 cannot make a connection with the second server from the list, the device tries to connect with the third server, and so on.
If FUT RO DC20-1 reaches the end of the list, it starts again at the beginning o f the server group and continues until a c onnection is made or FUTRO DC20-1 is r ese t. (To
34 Fujitsu Technology Solutions

provide for special requirements or server weighting algorithms, a single server name or an IP address may occur at more than one place in the list).
If FUTRO DC20-1 disconnects from a session, autoconnect (if it is set) starts at the beginning of the connection cycle. The device does not keep any record of the server to which a successful connection was last made. If a reset command is issued from the management console, this also causes the autoconnect process to restart at the beginning of the cycle.

The System Settings t ree item shows the following settings for the vSpace software. Double-clicking on the name of the setting allows you to adjust it (unless it is read-only, which is specied below).
Maximum number o f stations (incl. Host): Displays the maximum number of sessions the vSpace software is congured to support. This number includes the host PC. This setting is read-only.
Current number of sessions: Displays the number of active sessions. This setting is read-only.
This machine: Displays the name of the host PC. This setting is read-only.
This user: Displays the currently logged-in user’s username. This setting is read-only.
System uptime: Displays how long the host computer has been logged on. This setting is read only.
Main Station AutoLogon: Displays whe ther or not the host PC is set to automatically logon at boot-up.
Delay until shutdown (seconds): Displays the default amount of time after a shutdown command is issued on the host until the shutdown occurs. After the shutdown command is issued on the host, the shutdown timer starts. Then, a window pops up on each access device that tells the users they must logoff since the host is shutting down. Each user must save their work. Also, a window pops up on the host that enables the administrator to abort the shutdown timer and start the shutdown immediately, or cancel the shutdown. When the shutdow n timer expires, the shutdown occurs.
Disable Send Broadcast Message: Displays whether or not the administrator has disabled broadcast messages. See the description of the Sessions tree item for more information about how broadcast messages work.
Disable Console in Context Menu: Displays whether or not the administrator has disabled the Console Icon from showing up in the Windows system tray of a user’s virtual desktop session.
Prevent access of the USB-storage devices to the attached device: Displays whether or not the administrator has globally prevented access to USB devices on access devices.
Fujitsu Technology Solutions 47
Page 52
Using t he vSpace Management Console
Remote View/Control allowed: Displays whether or not the administrator has congured the vSpace software to allow administrators to remotely view user and control user sessions.
Clean up disconnected sessions not in use: Displays whether the vSpace software automatically looks for disconnected sessions that are not in use and logs them out after a dened period of time. If this feature is turned off (set to No or 0), when any access device drops its connection, the connection remains active on the host. When the user reconnects, their disconnected session is reconnected to their new session and all their open les and applications are available again. Also, in this case, the only way to end a disconnected session is for an administrator to stop the session from the console software. If this feature is turned on (set to any whole number up to 999), the same behavior applies, but when a session is disconnected, a timer starts. If the user reconnects before the timer is up, their disconnected session is reconnected to their new session and all their open les and applications are available again. If the time r runs out and the session is still disconnected, the vSpace software will end the session by itself. This makes sure that disconnected sessions do not reserve resources for an indenite period. By default, this is set to "5".
Support WTSAPI32 Interface: Displays whether or not the vSpace s oftware has turned on support for the WTSAPI32 interface. (This feature is currently disabled.)
Disable background-bitmaps under Windows XP: Displays whether or not the user is able to set their own background bitmap for their Windows desktop.
Do not display last user name: Displays whether or not the vSpace software displays the last user name that logged on using a particular a ccess device. This is sometimes enabled as a security measure .
UTMA/UTSA USB port support: Displays whether the administrato r ha s s et t he vSpace software to allow using the USB port on FUTRO DC20-1 access devices.
Administrator Password: Displays whether an administrator password is set.
Autologon on the Host Station: Displays whether the host PC is set to boot up without the Window s logon screen showing on the host PC.
Background Ha rdware Activation: Displays whether the software silently activates newlyconnected devices.
Video Streaming Support: Displays whether the host will provide streaming video to compatible devices (L300 only).
Accelerate Flash Globally: Displays whether the host will leverage video streaming to deliver ighquality lash to the access device at the cost of higher processor utilization.
Compression Ratio (5 -95 %): Displays the level of compression used on the access device’s real ime utput. A higher number results in higher display quality at the access device, but also utilizes reater etwork bandwidth.

There is a feature in the vSpace software that keeps disconnected sessions running and available. If the user reconnects while a disconne cted session for that username is present, the software will connect the disconne cted session to the new session. The user will see the desktop as it was when the disconnection occurred.
The administrator can congure the software to keep disconnected sessions running and available indenitely or to close them automatically after being disconnected for a specied period of time. The setting is in the administrative console’s system settings and is called, Clean up disconnected sessions not in use.

http://ts.fujitsu.com/support/downloads.html"
Q: Must the versions of the vSpace software in a network be the same?
A: Yes, different versions can cause data c ommunication problems. Please keep all vSpace software updated with the latest version.
Q: W hen I start my access device, why is the server connection list blank? I have the vSpace software on a host PC in my netwo rk. I ca n connect to the host PC if I provision its IP address in the access device.
A: This condition occurs when the host and access devices are on independent subnets. The access device can run in this mode, but will never see the host P C in its server connection list.
Q: When I go to the device list in the administration console, why do some of my access devices never show up in the list?
A: This condition occurs when the host and access devices are on independent subnets. The access device can run in this mode, but its record will never appear in the administration console’s device list.
Q: When I try to do a m anual rmware update on the a ccess device, why does it not connect to the host PC and download the rmware?
A: This condition occurs when t he host and access de vices are on independent subnets. An access device can run in this mode, but it can only download rmware updates when it is on the same subnet as the host PC.
Q: When I start my access device, why does it not automatically upda te its rmware from the host PC like my other access devices do?
A: This condition occurs when the host and access devices are on independent subnets. The access device can run in this mode, but it can only download rmware updates when it is on the same subnet as the host PC.
Q: I can’t download any vSpace software updates.
A: Make sure that the s oftware is registered and the correct TCP/IP ports are open (see Product Registration section).
Q: Why does a warning message appear wh en I install the vSpace software?
A: Window s provides a rewall that displays a security warn ing message when a new network port is used (see below). If you click the Keep Blocking button, you will not be able to nd NComputing servers. If you select the Unlock button, the port will be open unless you block it m anually. If you select the Ask Me Later button, the port will be open temporarily and the security messa ge will

FAQ
continue to appear whenever the port is accessed.
Q: Can the product support 10 Mbps or 1 Gbps?
A: No, only 100 Mbps is supported.
Q: What is transcoding?
A: Transcoding is the process of converting media formats from one type to another. This is a common technique used when wanting to optimize video for a given player or device. For instance, you may transcode some video to play on a mobile phone. vSpace has an efcient transcoding engine that converts video into a stream that can be locally decoded and displayed on the FUTRO DC20-1 in real time, completely transparent to the end user.
Q: If a customer wants to publish video content optimized for the FUTRO DC20-1, what format is best?
A: Original content up to standard DVD resolution (D1 - 720x480) will have the best playback experience. Content may be encoded in many codecs, but if being distributed over the web, high compression H.264 or MPEG4 delivers small le sizes, but if size is not an issue, lower compression formats such as MPEG2 require less processing on the server. Please create a test clip in one of the supported formats mentioned in the Multimedia section and test it on your intended video player.
Q: The accelerated multimedia feature of the FUTRO DC20-1 sounds like simple multimedia redirection. How is this different?
A: Multimedia redirection found in terminal server products from Microsoft or Citrix simply send the entire media le over the network to be played by the client. This means that the client must have a full media player software stack and the necessary codecs to decode those les. This m eans that to achieve the same quality of video as the FUTRO DC20-1, a thin client must be 2-3X more expensive and require painful management of the local software stack to constantly ensure that codecs are loaded. Typically, this means the device needs to be similar to a full PC.
