Getting Started

Installing the Batteries
1. Turn the unit over.
2. Slide the battery cover off in the direction of the arrow.
3. Place the four AAA batteries inside the case following the diagram.
Adjusting the Screen Contrast
1. Press ON/OFF.

Almost every entry in this Thesaurus has a brief definition and a related list of synonyms or Classmates. (Classmates are words related by subject.) Some entries include idioms and ant­onyms. thesaurus entry .

Viewing Confusables
Confusables are words that sound alike or are spelled similarly. Whenever a ? alternately flashes with arrows to the right of a word, that word has Confusables. Try this example.

Correcting Misspellings
Don’t worry if you misspell a word; a list of spell­ing corrections will automatically appear. Try this example.
1. Type a misspelled word.
2. Press ENTER.
3. Press to highlight a correction, if needed.
If you see a flashing T, that word has a thesaurus entry.
4. Press ENTER to go to its thesaurus entry.

Finding Letters
Use the question mark key to stand for un­known letters when you’re not sure how to spell a word. You can use more than one question mark in a word. Try this example.
1. Type a word with ?’s for letters.
2. Press ENTER to view matches.
3. Press to view more matches, if any.
4. Press CLEAR when done.
Help with Word Games
You can use ?’s to help in solving cross­word puzzles and other word games.
For example, if the second letter of a five­letter word is “r” and its last letter is “d”, enter

and then scroll down to view
possible answers.

Finding Parts of Words
The asterisk stands for a series of unknown letters. Use it to find suffixes, prefixes, or any fragment of a word. You can type more than one asterisk in a word.
1. Type a word with one or more ’s.
2. Press ENTER.
A list of matches appears.
3. Press to view more matches.
4. Press CLEAR when done.
Letter Finding Tips
You can type both ?’s and ’s in a word. However, if you type either at the start of the word, finding words may take awhile. If no matches are found,

Placing Notes
Use the Personal word list for personal study or review. You can save up to 99 words in your list if they are words from this Thesuarus. Once you add your own words to the list, however, the number of words you can save decreases. Here is how to add and view your first word.
1. Press CLEAR.
2. Type the word you want to add.
3. Press LIST.
4. Press

If you typed a word that is not in this Thesaurus, you will see Press Y to add the word or N to cancel.

Removing Notes
You can remove words from your Personal word list one at a time or you can erase the whole list at once. Here is how.

Hangman
Hangman challenges you to guess a mystery word, hidden by ?’s, one letter at a time. The number of wrong guesses you can make ap­pears to the right of the ?’s. For a hint press

If you ask for a hint, you will lose the round. Press ENTER if you want to view the thesau­rus entry. (Press BACK to return to Hang­man.) Or press NEXT to start a new round.
Anagrams
Anagrams challenges you to find all of the words that can occur within the selected word. Each letter can only be used as many times as it appears in the selected word. Each anagram must be a specified minimum length that will flash on the screen before each round. The number of possible anagrams is shown to the right of the selected word.

In Word Blaster you try to guess the mystery word represented by ?’s before all its letters appear. Deduction
Deduction challenges you to guess the mys­tery pattern represented by the four question marks. Type letters (a-f) and then press EN­TER. You can use a letter more than once. Af­ter entering your guess, a scorecard appears showing the number of correct letters Per­fectly located (P) or Misplaced (M).

Limited Warranty (U.S. only)
Franklin Electronic Publishers, Inc. (“Franklin”) warrants to the end user that this product will be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of ONE YEAR from the date of original retail purchase, as evidenced by sales receipt. On discovery of a defect, the end user must return this product (transportation charges prepaid) either to the dealer from whom it was purchased or directly to Franklin at the address given below. Each product returned must include the user’s name, address, and telephone number, as well as a brief description of the nature of the defect and a copy of the sales receipt as proof of the date of the original retail purchase. Franklin will, at its option, repair or replace any product at no further charge to the end user on determination by Franklin, in its sole discretion, that the product was defective and that such defect arose within the duration of this limited warranty.
