
Setup Guide — RGB 472xi/474xi/478xi/478 Mxi
This guide provides quick start instructions for an experienced installer to set up and operate Extron®
RGB 472xi/474xi/478xi/478 Mxi wall-mountable analog computer-video interfaces.
Installation

Step 1 — Preparing the mounting surface
a. Place the wall box against the installation surface, and mark the opening guidelines.

b. Cut out the material from the marked area.
c. Secure the wall box with 10-penny nails or #8 or #10 screws, leaving the front edge flush with the surface.
d. Run all required cables (see step 3) and secure them with cable clamps.

Step 2 — Power
Turn off or disconnect all equipment power sources.
Step 3 — Rear panel connections and settings

Cable and test the interface before installing it in the wall. Connectors and some controls will be inaccessible once
the interface is installed.
Use a level to mark the opening.
In order to fit in the junction box, do not install a boot on TP cables and RJ-45 connectors.
Items g, h, i, and j are present on the RGB 474xi only. On the RGB 478xi,
this space hold AAPs. On the RGB 478 Mxi, this space hold MAAPs.

Normal (inside position) — Unity (no signal boost)
Medium (middle position) — Mid-level peaking and

Maximum (outside position) — Maximum peaking

125 feet (38.1 m), and gain is set to medium or maximum,
the image may be overcompensated. If the image edges seem to exceed their boundaries or thin lines and sharp edges look fuzzy, reduce the gain setting.
Power connector — Connect the included 12 V power supply (or any 9 V to 24 V power supply) to the interface as shown at right.

Insert the wires into the connector and tighten the screws. Polarity is not important.

This product is intended to be supplied by a Listed Power Unit marked “Class 2” or “LPS”, rated 9 VDC to 24 VDC, 0.2 A minimum.
Always use a power supply supplied by or specified by Extron. Use of an unauthorized power supply voids all regulatory compliance
certification and may cause damage to the supply and the end product. Unless otherwise stated, the AC/DC adapters are not suitable
for use in air handling spaces or in wall cavities. The installation must always be in accordance with the applicable provisions of
National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70, article 75 and the Canadian Electrical Code part 1, section 16. The power supply shall not
be permanently fixed to a building structure or similar structure.
Contact closure connector — Connect a contact closure device for remote selection of the input. Insert the wires into the connector

and tighten the screws. For contact closure control, short the pin for the desired input to the ground pin to select that device.
For contact closure control, auto-switch mode must be off. See DIP switch 7 (item c, above).

Video connector — Connect a composite video device to this female BNC connector for pass-through from a front panel connector (item s).

S-video connector — Connect an S-video device to this female 4-pin mini-DIN connector for pass-through from a front panel connector (item t).

Balanced audio connectors — Connect an audio device to this 3.5 mm, 5-pole direct insertion screw connector for pass-through of a balanced audio

output from the front panel connectors (item e). See the figure associated with item u, on the other side of this sheet to wire the connector. Insert
the wires into the connector and tighten the screws.
Network connectors — Connect network devices to these female RJ-45 connectors for pass-through from front panel connectors (item v).

Items s, t, u, and v are present on the RGB 474xi only. On the RGB 478xi, this space holds
AAPs. On the RGB 478 Mxi, this space holds MAAPs.

Input 1 and 2 — Connect computer-video sources to these female 15-pin HD connectors.

Audio input 1 and 2 — Connect unbalanced stereo audio sources

to these 3.5 mm mini stereo jacks for unbalanced audio input.
Input Select button — Press this button to select an input signal.

Auto-switch mode, set by DIP switch 8, item c, disables the Input
Select button.
Power and signal LEDs —

Both red — Power is applied.
Mixed indications — Indicates input selection and signal status as shown
in the table at right.
H(orizontal) Shift — While viewing the displayed image, rotate this

control to move the image to the right or left on the screen.
DDSP disables the interface’s Horizontal Shift control.
To use the display’s centering controls rather than the interface’s controls, set
DDSP DIP switch 3, item c, to On (up).
Min/Max LED — This LED flashes when the minimum and maximum

limits of the Horizontal Shift control (item o) is reached.
Monitor connector — If desired, connect a local monitor or other device

to this female 15-pin HD connector.
Monitor switch — Selects which input signal to output on the Monitor connector (item q), as follows

Follows (up) — Local monitor display the signal from the selected input.
Input 1 (down) — Locks the local monitor to input 1.

Network connectors — Connect network devices to these female RJ-45

Testing and final installation
Make all connections and test the system. After all devices are powered up, the system
is fully operational. If any problems are encountered, verify that the cables are routed
and connected properly. If your problems persist, call the Extron S3 Sales & Technical
Support Hotline that is closest to you, at the number shown below.
Install the device when the operation tests satisfactorily.
a. At the power outlet, unplug the power supply.
b. Mount the interface into the wall box.
c. At the power outlet, reconnect the power supply.
