Introduction
Today, airtight homes have helped conserve energy compared to just a few years ago. Unfortunately, along with this improvement came an increase in indoor pollution and contaminants.
We spend a great majority of our time indoors and are constantly exposed to large amounts of airborne particles such as:
Smoke Fireplace Fumes Dust Household Cleaners Pollen Pesticides Mold Detergents Pet Hair/Dander Cooking Odors Smog
Repeated long-term exposure to contaminants such as these, as well as bacteria and viruses, may result in respiratory disorders and other health problems.
Room air purifiers have been proven to reduce these airborne contaminants so the air you breathe is healthier.
How to Choose the Right Air Purifier
First, it is important that the air purifier you are considering has its performance certified by an independent test lab. This way, you will know exactly what you are buying. Units which have been tested have the AHAM seal and CADR (Clean Air Delivery Ratings) on the package.
145 145 140
The CADR is the single most important thing to know about air purifiers. CADR is the amount of clean air (in cubic feet) the machine, with its filter, will deliver into a room. It measures the net effect of the filter material and the air flow of the unit.
No other measurement tells you how well a unit works in your home. The higher the CADR rating on a specific particulate matter, the more efficient that model is at removing that particulate. As you can see from the AHAM CADR ratings seal above, the True HEPA Media Air Purification System is a state-of-the-art appliance which, when used in accordance with the instructions, will clean the air in a localized area in your home or office. The True HEPA Air Purification System is specially designed to help eliminate dust, pollen, smoke, viruses, bacteria, and other allergens from the air.
Secondly, it is good to know exactly what area or room size you wish to clean. This air purifier will remove 99.97% of the airborne particles entering the unit, and will clean a 18 x 14 square foot room with 5 air charges per hour, based on the CADR rating of the product. Air Purifiers may be used in any room in the house. Typically, they are used in rooms where people spend the most time: the bedroom and the family room.
Remember, opening a door or window will introduce more airborne particulates to the room and, therefore, increase the time indicated to clean a room.
We thank you for your purchase of this air purifier. If at any time we can be of assistance, please call us at 1-800-547-3888. Please read this entire booklet carefully before operating your air purifier.
Important Safeguards
READ BEFORE USING YOUR AIR PURIFIER
1. This appliance has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). To reduce the risk of electric shock, this plug is intended to fit only one way into a polarized 120-volt AC, 15-amp outlet. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician. Do not attempt to defeat this safety feature. If an extension cord must be used, it should also accept the wide blade plug and meet this electrical rating.
2. Do not place the cord under rugs, in traffic areas, or near heat sources.
3. Do not use the air purifier if the cord is damaged.
4. Always unplug the power cord before cleaning, servicing, or when the unit is not in use.
5. Do not place the air purifier near loose drapes, combustible materials, or heat-producing objects.
6. Remove protective poly bag from the black pre-filter and install. See “Care & Maintenance” section for instructions.
7. This air purifier is UL approved with Bemis by Essick Air brand filters in place. To maintain your UL rating, see your service center for all repairs (a complete listing of authorized service centers is in the back of this booklet). Use only Bemis by Essick Air brand replacement filters. To order filters, call 1–800–547–3888 or use the convenient order form in this booklet.
Locating the Unit:
The True HEPA Air Purification System is designed in such a way that it can conveniently fit against the wall or on a bookcase or nightstand and still function at peak efficiency. Locate the unit near an electrical outlet. The unit will change the air in a 14 x 18 room five times per hour. In smaller rooms, the air will be cleaned more frequently; in larger rooms, less frequently.
Operation of the Unit:
Before the air cleaner can be used, locate the black carbon odor-removal pre-filter, remove the poly bag, and install in the unit following the the directions for replacing the Air Filters in the “Care and Maintenance” section below.
The True HEPA Air Purification System has several unique features which you need to know about in order to receive maximum relief.
1. Three fan speeds for maximum air cleaning and more quiet nighttime use. In fact, we suggest running the unit on high for half-an-hour before bedtime and turning down the unit to low speed for quiet operation while sleeping.

2. The FilterWatch™ sensor is a unique feature exclusive to Bemis by Essick Air. The FilterWatch sensor measures when the filter has captured the maximum amount of airborne particulates and indicates this by lighting a red light on the control panel. (The FilterWatch sensor should
be tested on high speed only.)
3. Air flow exits through the top of the unit, which prevents drafts.
Care and Maintenance:
In order for your air purifier to function properly, it is important that the filter be in peak operating condition. The following instructions will help ensure that your unit is providing you with the cleanest air possible.
When Should You Change Filters? FilterWatch™ Lets You Know
LOOK FOR THE RED LIGHT
Your Bemis by Essick Air True HEPA Air Purifier contains the exclusive FilterWatch sensor. It accurately monitors airflow through the unit. When the filter becomes blocked, airflow is reduced, and FilterWatch alerts you with a bright red light when the speed control is set to “high”.
TEST YOUR FILTER PERIODICALLY
FilterWatch is calibrated for your unit’s “High” setting. If you typically operate
it at a lower speed, test your unit periodically by running it at least half an hour on the “High” setting. If the red light appears, it is time to replace the Pre-Filter and check the condition of the HEPA Filter.
WHICH FILTER SHOULD YOU CHANGE?
Your unit contains a Pre-Filter and a HEPA Filter. To determine which filter to replace, run this test:
1. Install new Pre-Filter, leaving the current HEPA Filter in place.
2. Set the unit on “High” and run uninterrupted for at least half an hour.
3. If the FilterWatch indicator remains off, you won’t need to replace the HEPA Filter.
4. If the FilterWatch illuminates, you will also need to replace the HEPA Filter.
5. Excessive handling will damage the HEPA filter.
REPLACE A BLOCKED FILTER IMMEDIATELY
A clean filter ensures maximum air quality and it keeps your unit running smoothly and trouble-free. To extend the life of the pre-filter, heavy accumulations of dust may be gently vacuumed away. Retest the system as a replacement HEPA filter may still be needed. To order replacement filters, call 1–800–547–3888 or use the convenient order form in this booklet.
To Install or Replace Carbon Pre-filter:
• Unplug unit.
• Place air purifier on its back, on a protective surface.
• Locate the removable filter compartment door on the bottom of the air cleaner.
• Slide the cover upward toward the front grille, then pull outward to remove.
• Pulling on the filter tab, slide both the HEPA Filter and black Pre-Filter forward and remove the dirty black Pre-Filter from the air purifier. Remove the new Pre-Filter from the polybag.
• Place the new Pre-Filter on top of the pleated HEPA Filter, and push both filters back into the air purifier until they stop.
• Slide filter compartment door back into position. Press down and lock in place.
To Replace HEPA Filter
• Perform the test above to determine if the HEPA Filter needs replacing.
• Unplug unit.
• Place air purifier on its back, on a protective surface.
• Locate the removable filter compartment door on the bottom of the air cleaner.
• Slide the cover upward toward the front grille, then pull outward to remove.
• Pulling on the filter tab, slide both the HEPA Filter and black Pre-Filter completely out of the air purifier. Position the new filter with the tab reading, "This Side Up". Replace the black Pre-Filter back on top of the HEPA Filter and slide both filters into the air purifier until they stop. If
you do not have the correct side of the HEPA filter facing upward, the compartment door will not close.
• Slide the filter compartment door back into position. Press down and lock into place.
• HEPA media is fragile. Do not puncture, crush or touch the pleated HEPA paper. Handle the filter by its frame and/or tabs.
Consumer questions may be handled by dialing our Consumer Services Department at 1-800-547-3888. We are open between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. EST during the week and between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays.
Troubleshooting
1. Unit does not operate at any speed setting: a. Polarized cord must be fully inserted in wall outlet. b. Check the air flow path. Are there any obstructions preventing move-
ment of the fan blade?
c. Has the poly bag been removed from the air filter? Is it properly
installed?
d. The motor contains a temperature-sensing fuse. If the motor becomes
overheated, the motor will automatically shut off until it cools. If the condition persists, unplug the unit and contact the nearest authorized service station. DO NOT ATTEMPT to repair the motor yourself.
2. The air does not seem to be any cleaner: This air purifier removes airborne particulates which are, in some cases,
too small to be seen by the naked eye. Verify the filter is installed properly and the motor is turning the fan blade. If so, the air is being cleaned.
3. My red light has not illuminated for quite some time: Depending upon the condition of the air in the room in which the unit is
operating, the HEPA filter may last anywhere between two and five years. Make sure you test the unit periodically following the instructions detailed above.
4. The filter cover does not fit on the unit after I replace the filter: Make sure the HEPA filter is aligned properly and is not caught on any
internal support piece. Make sure the filters are inserted completely into the slot. Make sure the filter cover is not reversed and that all tabs are aligned properly. The HEPA filter is marked "This Side Up."
5. The pre-filter doesn’t look real dirty. Can I continue to use it or try to clean it:
The pre-filter may be removed and gently vacuumed to remove loose dust, etc. DO NOT CLEAN THE HEPA FILTER. It will be damaged. To ensure proper operation of the air purifier, be sure to retest the unit to see if the HEPA filter needs to be replaced. (Follow instructions in Care and Maintenance Section). If the FilterWatch light illuminates, change the filter.

When should you test your filter?
Test your filter periodically. FilterWatch is calibrated for your unit’s “high” setting. If you typically operate it at a lower speed, test your unit periodically by running it at least one-half hour. If the red light appears, it is time to replace the filter.
Which filter should you change?
There are two filters in your air purifier - a HEPA Filter and Pre-Filter. When the FilterWatch indicator lights, you should run the following “filter-test” to determine which filters require replacement:
1. Install a new Pre-Filter, leaving the current HEPA Filter in place.
2. Set the unit on “High” and allow it to run uninterrupted for one-half hour.
3. If the red FilterWatch indicator does not illuminate, you don’t need to replace the HEPA Filter.
4. If the red FilterWatch indicator lights again, you will need to replace the HEPA Filter. (See instructions on the HEPA Replacement Filter package.)
