Interference with Vehicular Electronics - Electronic fuel injection systems, electronic anti-skid braking systems, electronic cruise control systems, etc., are typical of the types of electronic devices which may be prone to malfunction due to the lack of protection from radio frequency energy p resent when transmi tting. If the ve hicle con tains su ch equi pment, consult the deale r for the make of vehicle and enlist his aid in determ ining if such electronic circuits will perform normally when the radio is transmitting.
WARNING

out of the way of passengers.
It is suggested that the radio be installed by one of the many auth orized General Electric Service Stations located throughout the United States. These experienced service stations can provide a proper radio installation and make any final adjustments th at ma y be nee ded.

Page 6
Be careful to avoid damaging some vital part (fuel tank, transmission housing, e tc. ) of t he ve hicl e wh en dri ll ing mo unt ing holes. Alwa ys c hec k to see how far the mounting screws will extend below the mounting surface before installing.
CAUTION
If pilot holes must be drill ed, remove all metal shav ings from drilling holes befor e insta lling screws.
CAUTION
Radio installations in vehicles powered by liquefied petroleum gas must conform to the followin g requi re ment s.
WARNING

NOTES

Figure 2 - Typica l Hump Or Da sh Mount
For passenger safety, mount the radio securely so that the unit will not
break loose in the event of a collision. This is especially important in
station wagons, vans and similar type installations where a loose radio
could be ext re m el y da nge rous to th e vehicle oc cu pa nts.
WARNING
INSTALLATION IN VEHICLES POWE RED BY LIQUE FIED (L P) GAS
Radio installation in vehicles powered by liquefied petroleum gas with the LP-gas container in the trunk or other sealed-offspace within the interior of the vehicle must conform to the National Fire Protection Association Standard NFPA 58 whic h re quire s tha t:
Space containing radio equipment shall be isolated by a seal from the
spac e containi ng t he LP-g as c ont ai ne r a nd its fi ttings.
Outside filling connections shall be used for the LP-gas container.
The LP-gas contai ne r space shall be vente d to the outside of the vehi cl e.

INSTALLATION
RUNNING CABLES
To assure the feasibility of the planned cable routings. it is suggested that the cables be run befor e mount ing the radio. Be sure to leave some slack in each c ab le going to the radio so that the radio may be pulled out for servicing with the power appli e d an d antenna att ac he d.
Try to route the cables awa y from locati ons where they will be exposed to heat (exhaust pipes, mufflers, tailpipes. etc.). battery acid, sharp edges, or mechanical damage or where they will be a nuisance to automobile mechanics. the driver, or passengers. Keep wiring away from electronic computer modules. other electronic modules and ignition circuits to help prevent interference to these components and rad i o eq uipme n t.
In addition. try to utilize existing holes in the fire wall and trunk wall and the channels above or beneath the doors. Also, channels through door and window columns that are convenient for running cables may be used, unless planning to install rigi d or fl ex ibl e con dui t in whic h to run the ca ble s.
Power And Ignition Cabl e
The power cable consists of a red lead, an orange lead, a black lead, a 3 pin systems plu g. and a set of fuses and fuse holders to be installe d as indicated in Figure
3.
To install the powe r ca ble, dril l a 5/8 in ch hole in the fir ewa l l for the c able ru n and inse rt the rubber g rom met. St arti ng with t he p lug end o f the cab le at the l oc atio n of the radio, run the three cable leads through the hole. Secure the cable at several locations wit hi n the engi ne compa rt m en t.
To instal l the fu ses:
1. Cut off 12 to 18 in ch es from the red and ora nge wire s.
2. Strip back the insul ation appro ximatel y 3/8 of an inch on ea ch end of the wires.
3. Lubrica te the wire tip s wi th l iqu id soa p to inse rt the wire s i nto the fu se ho lders.
Pull the wire ends through the small opening at the end of each fuse holder
section and cri mp a fuse conne c tor to each wi re .

NOTES

4. Push the prepared fuse conne c tors into each se c ti on of the fuse holde rs. Place the fuse into a fuse holde r sec tion unt il it seat s withi n the con ne ctor. Conn ec t the fuse holde r sections to insure a tight fit and conn ec t ion .

Page 10
NOTE
In some insta llatio ns an additiona l noise suppression filter suc h as optio n PMPD1A (19A148539G1) may be need ed for satisfa cto ry perfo rm an ce.
NOTE
With some accessory points, the voltage only drops when the ignition switch is in the START posi tion. A conn ection point should be used where the voltage is completely off when the ignition switch is in the START position.
Certain problems may be encountered when accessory equipment is connected to the ignition or accessory lines of the vehicle, where these lines may ha ve large fi lter capa c it ors or a leak ag e pa th pre sen t.
If the radio does not tur n off within a rea sonable a mount of tim e after the ignition is tur ne d off , first try a diff eren t ac cessory o r ig nitio n sen se pic k up point in the vehicle. Many vehicles have more than one circuit that is switched by the ignition switch, and one may be available that does not have large fi lter capa c it ors or a leak age pa th pre sen t.
If a different pickup point cannot be found, then add a 470-ohm 1-watt resistor from the ignition sense pick point to ground. This will discharge the capaci tor(s) or reduce the leak age voltage to a low value. Current drain through this resistor will be minimal (less than 0.03A) when the ignition is switched on.
CAUTION
Connect the orange fused lead to the positive (+) battery terminal, and black to the negative (-) battery terminal. Always locate the fuse as close to the battery as possible.
Connect the red fused lead to the ignition on" sense point (preferably an "Accessory" point on the fuse panel that is switched on when the ignition switch is in the accessory position and in the "run" position). Locate the fuse as close as possible to the accessory po int.

For passenger safety, mount the radio securely so that the unit will not
break loose in the event of a collision. This is especially important in
station wagons, vans and similar type installations where a loose radio
could be ext re m el y da nge rous to the vehicle oc cu pa nts.

Interference with Vehicular Electronics - Electronic fuel injection sys- tems, electronic anti-skid braking systems, electronic cruise control sys- tems, etc., are typical of the types of electronic devices which m ay be prone to malfunction due to the lack of protection from radio frequency energy p resent when transmi tting. If the ve hicle con tains su ch equi pment, consult the deale r for the make of vehicle and enlist his aid in determ ining if such electronic circuits will perform normally when the radio is trans- mitting.
