Introduction

Introduction

Welcome

Your new EPSON Stylus® COLOR 440 is the perfect printer for small office or home use. You can print anything from reports and resumes to photos and greeting cards.
EPSON’s award-winning ink jet technology makes everything you print look great. All you have to do is:
Use the right paper.
Choose the right printer settings.
If you’ve used other printers before, you may be surprised at how much difference your paper and printer settings can make. Plain paper is fine, but special ink jet papers like the ones in your EPSON Media Pack are even better. You use printer settings to tell your printer what kind of paper or media you’re using. Then your printer adjusts itself so that you get the best print results for that type of paper.
So remember to check your printer settings every time you print. It’s easy to do— just follow the instructions in this guide.

Important Safety Instructions

Before using your printer, read the following safety instructions to make sure you use the printer safely and effectively.
Always use the power button to turn the printer on or off. Never use an external switch—such as a power strip—to turn off the printer.
Turn off and unplug the printer before cleaning. Clean with a damp cloth only. Do not spill liquid on the printer.
Do not place the printer on an unstable surface or near a radiator or heating vent.
Do not block or cover the openings in the printer’s cabinet or insert objects through the slots.
Use only the type of power source indicated on the printer’s label.
Connect all equipment to properly grounded power outlets. Avoid using outlets on the same circuit as photocopiers or air control systems that regularly switch on and off.
4
Place the printer near a wall outlet where it can be easily unplugged.
Placez l’imprimante près d’une prise de contacte où la fiche peut être débranchée facilement.
Do not let the power cord become damaged or frayed.
If you use an extension cord with the printer, make sure the total ampere rating of the devices plugged into the extension cord does not exceed the cord’s ampere rating. Also, make sure the total of all devices plugged into the wall outlet does not exceed 15 amperes.
Except as specifically explained in this guide, do not attempt to service the printer yourself.
Unplug the printer and refer servicing to qualified service personnel under the following conditions:
If the power cord or plug is damaged; if liquid has entered the printer; if the printer has been dropped or the cabinet damaged; if the printer does not operate normally or exhibits a distinct change in performance. Adjust only those controls that are covered by the operating instructions.
Do not put your hand inside the printer or touch the cartridge during printing.
Under normal circumstances, ink will not come out of the cartridge. If it does get on your skin, wash it off with soap and water. If it gets in your eyes, flush them immediately with water.
Keep ink cartridges out of the reach of children.
Do not dismantle the ink cartridges or try to refill them. This could result in damage to the print head.
Once you install an ink cartridge, do not open the clamp or remove the cartridge except to replace it with a new one. The cartridge may become unusable otherwise.
Install the ink cartridge immediately after you remove it from its foil package. Leaving the cartridge unpacked for a long time before use may result in reduced print quality.
Do not use an ink cartridge beyond the date printed on the cartridge carton. For best results, use up the ink cartridges within six months of installing them.
Do not shake an ink cartridge; this can cause leakage.
Always turn the printer off using the power button. When this button is pressed, the printer or turn off the power to the outlet until the

How To Print

How To Print
This section gives you a brief introduction to your printer. Use it to begin EPSON’s Guided Printing Exercise and print your first photograph. If you need more information, see your electronic EPSON Stylus COLOR 440 Manual.

Using the Guided Printing Exercise

For a quick lesson in printing, follow EPSON’s Guided Printing Exercise. If you haven’t installed it, see “Installing the Creative Software” on page 7 for help.

If you want to exit the exercise before completing it, click Cancel (you may need to click Cancel more than once).

Printing a Photograph

Your EPSON Stylus COLOR 440 is great for letters and reports, but even better for photographs. How do you get photos into your computer?
Most film developing services will give you your pictures on a diskette or CD-ROM. Just insert the diskette or CD-ROM in the correct drive, then copy your picture files to your hard disk or open them in your application (we’ll show you how in the next section).
If you have a digital camera or a scanner, you can create picture files. See the documentation that came with your camera or scanner for instructions.
Here are the basic steps for printing a photograph. For more details on advanced print settings, see your electronic EPSON Stylus COLOR 440 Manual.

Taking Care of Your Printer

Taking Care of Your Printer
Your printer is designed for easy maintenance. In fact, every time you turn it on, the printer goes through a quick tune-up process. All you have to do is run some maintenance utilities occasionally and replace your ink cartridges when they’re empty.

Running a Cleaning Cycle

If your printouts are faint or have gaps in the image, you may need to run a cleaning cycle. This unclogs the print head nozzles.
The cleaning cycle uses ink, so run it only if necessary.
Caution:
Don’t use the cleaning sheets that may be included with your special media; they may damage the printer.
Don’t clean the print head while printing is in progress, or your printout may be marred.
Follow these steps to run the head cleaning utility:
1. Make sure the printer is turned on but not printing, and that the color ink out lights are off. If either ink out light is on, you must replace the ink cartridge before cleaning the print head.
2. For Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT 4.0:
Click Start, point to Settings, and then select Printers .
Right-click the EPSON Stylus COLOR 440 icon in the Printers window.
Select Properties (Document Defaults in Windows NT). You see the
EPSON Stylus COLOR 440 Properties window.
For Windows 3.1x:
Double-click the Control Panel icon in the Main group. Double-click the Printers icon.

Never turn off the printer while the power light is flashing, unless the printer hasn’t moved or made any noise for more than 5 minutes.
6. When the cleaning cycle is finished (the power light stops flashing), run a nozzle check to confirm that the print head nozzles are clean and to reset the printer’s cleaning cycle.
Make sure paper is loaded in the printer and click Print nozzle check pattern. Then click Next. The nozzle check pattern prints on your printer.
See below for instructions on examining the nozzle check pattern.
7. If your print quality has improved, click Finish. If your print quality has not improved, click Clean to run another cleaning

Replacing an Ink Cartridge

When the black or color ink out light flashes, that cartridge is low on ink. This is a good time to make sure you have a new cartridge. When the light stays on, the cartridge is empty and you need to replace it. You can’t print if either ink cartridge is empty.
Cartridges should be available where you bought your printer. You can also order them from EPSON Accessories at (800) 873-7766 or visit our web site at www.epsonsupplies.com (U.S. sales only). In Canada, please call (800) 873-7766 for dealer referral.

Color ink cartridge: S020191
Caution:
Use genuine EPSON cartridges and do not refill them. Other products may cause damage to your printer not covered by EPSON’s warranty.
Removing an Empty Ink Cartridge
You can replace a cartridge when the black or color ink out light is flashing, or when it stays on. Or you can replace it when your print samples just don’t look as good as they used to, and running a cleaning cycle or the Print Head Alignment utility doesn’t solve the problem. (See page 27 for instructions on running the Print Head Alignment utility.)
Follow these steps:
1. Make sure the printer is turned on but not printing.
2. Lower the output tray and raise the printer cover.

24
5. Lift the cartridge out of the printer.

Problems? Need Help?

Problems? Need Help?
This section gives you the basics for diagnosing and solving printer problems:
First see “Diagnosing Problems” below to help determine what the cause of the problem may be.
Then see “Problems and Solutions” on page 33 for solutions to common problems.
It’s a good idea to check EPSON’s web site periodically for possible updates to your printer driver. Visit www.epson.com and check the section for your product to see if there is a new driver available for downloading to your computer.
You’ll find additional troubleshooting tips in the “Troubleshooting” section of your electronic EPSON Stylus COLOR 440 Manual.

Diagnosing Problems

Your printer includes a number of ways to help you diagnose problems:
30
Check the lights on the printer’s control panel first (these identify the most common problems). See “Checking the Control Panel Lights” on page 31.
You can also use the Status Monitor 2 utility (not available for Windows 3.1x) to identify common problems. For instructions, see your electronic EPSON Stylus COLOR 440 Manual.
To determine whether the problem is caused by the printer itself, run a printer operation check. See your electronic EPSON Stylus COLOR 440 Manual for instructions.
For the latest information, check the EPSON Stylus COLOR 440 and Status Monitor 2 Help programs and ReadMe files in the EPSON program group or folder.
If none of the suggested solutions in this chapter solve your problem, see “Where To Get Help” on page 40.

Problems and Solutions

If you have any problems setting up your printer or printing, use these troubleshooting tips. You can also check “Troubleshooting” in your electronic manual.
Software Problems
If you’re having problems installing your printer software . . .
If you see the “New Hardware Found” screen in Windows 95
or Windows 98, click Cancel.
You can’t install your printer software that way.
Make sure your printer is turned on and the printer cable is securely connected to the printer and computer.
Make sure you’ve closed all other programs on your computer, including any screen savers. Then try installing the software again.
If you need help with the creative software on your CD-ROM . . .
For installation instructions, see page 7. (You cannot use the creative software on Windows 3.1.)
For help using the programs you installed from the CD-ROM, contact the software company. See page 41.
If you can’t see the EPSON Status Monitor 2 . . .
First, make sure you installed Status Monitor 2. (If you didn’t, follow the instructions in your Start Here folder to install the printer software.) Then make sure Status Monitor 2 is turned on. (Check
Settings, Background Monitoring
in the Status Monitor 2 window.) If you’re running Windows 3.1x, you don’t have Status Monitor 2.
33
Print Quality Problems
If your printout has horizontal lines through it . . .
Your print head nozzles may be clogged. Run a cleaning cycle (see page 19).
Make sure the Media Type setting matches the paper you’re using (see page 18).
Make sure the printable side of the paper is face up. (The printable side of ink jet paper is usually whiter.)
Make sure the ink cartridges aren’t low on ink. If either ink out light is flashing, or if a cartridge is too old, replace it (see page 22).
Try using Automatic mode when you print (see page 17).
Check the position of the thickness lever. For most types of paper, set the thickness lever to the 0 position.
If your printout has vertical lines through it . . .
Clean the print head (see page 19).
Run the Print Head Alignment utility (see page 27).
Check the position of the thickness lever. If it’s in the + position, your printer is set for thicker paper or envelopes, and vertical lines may appear in your printout. For most types of paper, set the thickness lever to the 0 position.
Thickness lever
34
If your printout is blurry or smeared . . .
Check the thickness lever position. If it’s in the + position, your printer is set for thicker paper or envelopes, and your image may smear. For most types of paper, set the thickness lever to the 0 position.
Thickness lever
Make sure your paper isn’t damp or loaded face down (the printable side should be loaded face up). If it’s damp, load a new stack of paper. If it’s loaded face down, reload it correctly.
Use a support sheet with special media, such as photo stickers. Or try putting one sheet at a time in the feeder.
Make sure your paper or media meets the specifications listed in your electronic EPSON Stylus
COLOR 440 Manual.
Run the Print Head Alignment utility (see page 27).
35
If your printout is faint or has gaps in the image . . .
Your print head nozzles may be clogged. Run a cleaning cycle (see page 19).
If your printout has missing colors, or if the colors are wrong . . .
Make sure the Ink option is set to Color.
36
Make sure your paper isn’t damaged, old, or dirty. Also, make sure you put the paper in correctly (the printable surface should be face up). You may need to put a new stack of paper in the feeder.
Your print head nozzles may be clogged. Run a cleaning cycle (see page 19).
Make sure the ink cartridges aren’t low on ink. If either ink out light is flashing, or if the cartridge is old, replace it (see page 22).
Tr y using the Automatic mode setting, or choose a different setting in the Custom Settings drop-down list (see page 17).
Remember that your monitor and printer use different technologies to represent colors, so your printout cannot exactly match the colors you see on your monitor.
If your printout is grainy . . .
Tr y using a higher quality paper.
Run the Print Head Alignment utility (see page 27).
If you’re printing a photograph, you may need to increase the print quality setting or print it in a smaller size.
If your printout contains strange characters . . .
Your printer cable may be loose. Check that the cable is locked firmly in place at both ends to make sure your printer and computer are communicating, then try printing again.
You may have the wrong printer cable. Make sure you have a shielded, twisted-pair parallel printer cable 6 to 10 feet long.
Your printer may not be selected as the Windows default printer.
See your Windows documentation for help selecting the Windows default printer.
37
Printer Problems
If you installed ink cartridges and the printer starts making noise . . .
The first time you install ink cartridges, the printer makes noise for several minutes while it charges its ink delivery system. Wait until the stops flashing before you turn off the printer. If you turn it off while it’s charging, the charging starts over again the next time you turn it on, which wastes ink.
