1. IMPORTANT REMARK
Congratulations! You are the owner of a carefully designed and manufactured equipment. We thank you for having purchased our SMAC series mixer. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you read this manual before connecting the mixer in order to obtain its maximum performance. We recommend our authorised Technical Services whenever any maintenance task should be needed so that optimum operation shall be achieved.
2. INTRODUCTION
The SMAC series is a new and revolutionary mixer concept, designed by and for PROFESSIONAL DJs, with ECLER’s state of the art performance and roughness. In the SMAC PRO20, ECLER has done what for years seemed impossible: a mixer with only 14 cm of width with 3 mixable channels and 6 inputs: 2 PHONOS, 2 CDs, 1 LINE, 1 MICROPHONE BAL (stereo jack). Its height and depth have been designed to match those of the world “standards” in CD players and analog vinyl turntables. Its new ergonomical design can be seen in the form and distribution of the controls and connections. The SMACs are specially adapted to the latest trends in mixing, manipulation and audio signal processing. All this by using our own carefully selected components, in order to insure a sound quality matching digital sources of the highest level. The tilted position of the main faders, a new design for the fader buttons and the placement of the CUT/PUSH buttons help for some natural body movements and, of course, faster and securer manipulations. The operating life of the corssfader has been extended up to more than 300,000 operations (30 times more than a high quality mechanical crossfader) thanks to the addition of an Voltage Controlled Amplifier (VCA). The VCA has also made possible the implementation of a special transfer curve designed under DJ’s considerations. The SMAC PRO20 has 3 mixable channels, with 5 stereo inputs: 2 PHONO, 2 CD (compact disc) and 1 LINE, plus an extra microphone input. All channels have an input lever switch selector and 3-band tone controls (2-band in microphone and line input). All inputs offer the PFL function in order to monitor any input signal, either visually (through the VU Meter) or acoustically (with headphones).

3. INSTALLATION
3.1. Placement and mounting
The PRO20 thing to take into consideration when placing your SMAC is your comfort and an easy access to all the connections. The SMAC PRO20 is basically conceived as a tabletop mixer and its usual placement will be between two vinyl or CD players. The optional metallic LSMAC side profiles kit allows you to firmly fix your SMAC PRO20 to the surface over which it is placed or over its own profiles (Fig.1). These profiles also allow to tilt the mixer’s position for an easier operation. Anyway, remember that the SMAC PRO20 has connections in the front of the box, so if you place it into a hole you will not be able to access these connections. Because of the high gain of the PHONO and MICROPHONE inputs, always try to place the mixer as far away as possible from noise sources (dimmers, engines, etc...) and mains wires. For the very same reason, and under any circumstance, should you ever remove the unit’s metallic cover. The power consumption of the SMAC PRO20 is very low, so they don’t need any cooling, but you should avoid extreme temperatures and the atmosphere should be as dry and dust-free as possible. The SMAC PRO20 operates under 110, 120, 220, 230 or 240V 50/60Hz, depending on country, (see characteristics in the back of the unit). Make sure that the mains wire (which plugs into 28) is far away from the signal cables in order to avoid any possible audio hum. In order to protect the unit from an eventual electrical overload it carries a 250mA fuse (28). Should it ever blow up, unplug the unit from mains and replace it with an identical one. If the new fuse blows again contact immediately with our Authorised Technical Service. YOU MUST NEVER USE A HIGHER VALUE FUSE.
CAUTION: Fuse substitutions have to be performed by a qualified technician.
3.2. Input signal sources
-Turntables: They must be fitted with magnetic cartridges of 1’77 to 56mV nominal output level. The PHONO inputs (27) of the SMAC PRO20 have a very good headroom so they can accept high output level cartridges. If you use moving coil cartridges they must be of high output level type and a transformer or external preamplifier, placed as near as possible to the turntable, must be connected between the cartridge and the mixer.
6
-Microphones: The Mic input (29), have a nominal input level of 0’316 to 31’6mV and are equipped with 1/4" jack connectors. These inputs allow for the use of balanced wires. Connections are as follows:
HOT or direct signal > Tip COLD or inverted signal > Ring GROUND > Sleeve
Low impedance (200 to 600Ω) monophonic microphones must be used. For non balanced microphones we recommend monophonic jack plugs although stereo ones are also suitable if the ring is shortcircuited to the sleeve.
-Compact Disc, Magnetophone, Cassettes, tuner and Video: These signals can be connected to any CD or LINE input. All these inputs can handle line level signals, but the SMAC PRO20 has dedicated CD (26) and LINE (25) inputs. The CD input sensitivity is +5dBV (1.778V) and the LINE input sensitivity is –5dBV (562mV) so that nowadays sound sources requirements are completely fulfilled.
4. OPERATION AND USAGE
4.1. Start up
To switch the mixer on just push the switch labeled POWER (20) and the green pilotlight inside the switch will light up. Although the switching noise produced by the SMAC PRO20 is very low and almost inexistent when starting up the SMACs with the OUTPUT (3-4) control down, we highly recommend the "safe power-up sequence": sound sources, mixer, equalizers, active filters and, finally, power amplifiers. Powering off should be done by following the exact reverse sequence in order to avoid any possible damage to the loudspeakers.
4.2. Prelistening
The SMACs are equipped with a prelistening system that enables the monitoring of the different inputs through the VU-meter and the headphones. Pressing any of the PFL (Pre Fader Listening) switches (9), the signal(s) present at the input(s) will be heard on the headphones (30) and seen on the VU-meter (16). If the PFL lever switches are at the OFF position, then the signal present at the main MIX bus (before the last amplification step, OUTPUT) will be heard on the headphones and seen in the VU-meter so that an indication of the output signal will be available.
7
4.3. Channel gain
All the SMAC input channels have accessible input sensitivity GAIN (2) controls. These controls have the function of compensating for differences of level existing between the sound sources connected to the table. The gain controls have a variation margin of ±15dB (channels 1-2) and ±20dB (channel 3). All GAIN adjustments must he done very carefully using the VU-METER as a reference and avoiding that all the red LEDS of the VU-METER light up, input could be cliped.
4.4. Channel equalization
Inputs 1 and 2 are provided with a 3-way tone control (6-7-8) of wide range of operation, -30 to +10dB for bass and treble and –25 to +10dB for medium. This wide range enables a progressive KILL effect instead of the sharpness of the ISOLATOR switch (11). Channel 3 is provided with a conventional two-way tone control with a ±15 dB range.
4.5. Long-life Crossfader with VCA.
The addition of the Voltage Controlled Amplification (VCA) control to the fineness, precision and mechanical strength of the crossfader has resulted in an operating life greater than 300,000 operations. That means that the SMAC PRO20 crossfader operating life is 30 times greater than a high-quality mechanical crossfader.
4.6. Changing the crossfader.
Once the operating life of the crossfader has ended, it can be changed very easily. Replace the old crossfader by a new one and the system will operate as the PRO20 day. To change the potentiometer proceed as follows:
1.-Remove the screws from the cover.
2.-Disconnect the multipin connector.
3.-Remove the crossfader screws.
4.-Replace the crossfader by a new one.
5.-Fix the crossfader screws.
6.-Connect the multipin connector.
7.-Place the cover and fix the screws.
Always use original ECLER GENUINE SPARE PARTS for your SMAC.
8
4.7. Effects: KILL, CUT/PUNCH.
Two groups of switches (11) with leds (10) are placed on top of the sloped faders of the SMAC PRO20. Each group acts on the correspondent channel. When the switches are pressed, the selected frequency range is instantaneously eliminated. So, it is possible to mix the bass of a song (by eliminating the medium and treble) with the medium and treble (by eliminating the bass) of another song. The CUT and PUNCH switches are also instantaneous. Each CUT switch (13) instantaneously stops the adjacent channel if the fader and crossfader are open. The PUNCH effect (14) is the inverse, the music is instantaneously inserted if the crossfader is closed (opposite site of the switch pressed). The level of the punched channel depends on the channel fader. The combination of these three elements offers an incredible fan of possibilities for your creativity.
4.8. Outputs
Headphones: in order to obtain a high performance, these should be of the high impedance type (200-600Ω). Plug them to the HEADPHONES (30) output, in the front panel, by means of a standard 1/4" stereo jack. Sleeve is Ground, Ring is Right Channel and Tip is Left Channel. The SMAC PRO20 has two outputs, OUT1 and OUT2 (22-23) with rotative independent volume controls (3-4). You must be careful when setting up the general output level of the mixer. The “clip” display of the connected power amplifiers must never remain permanently lighten up, but do it occasionally by following the rhythm of the bass signals that are being played. The SMAC PRO20 mixing unit is factory adjusted to 0dBV/1V but OUT1 can be internally adjusted to –10dBV/316mV, +4dBV/1.6V or +6dBV/2V (see Fig.2). Just changing some soldering bridges. The SMAC series mixers have a REC (24) output of -10dBV over 10kΩ of load for a nominal level input.
ATTENTION: The modification of the output gain must be carried out by a qualified technician.
9
5. CONSIDERATIONS
5.1. Ground loops
Ensure at all times that no signal sources reaching the mixing desk and no devices connected to its output have their earths interconnected; that is, earth should never reach them via two or more different paths, as this coul lead to humming which could even interfere with sound reproduction quality. In order to avoid earth loops, ensure that the shieldings of cables, if connected to the chassis, are never connected with each other.
5.2. Audio connections
As a general rule of thumb, make the signal connections as short as possible and use the best connectors and cable available. Cables and connectors are frequently undervaluated, forgetting that a bad connection can result in a poor sound quality.
5.3. Background noise
The use of active circuitry can yield, depending on the configuration, to a significant noise level. The SMAC series mixers have been designed for the minimum possible noise. Anyway, the noise level will always depend on the correct use and installation of the mixer. It is not the same setting up the “FADER” at “2” and the “MASTER” at “10” that the other way round; “FADER” at “10” and “MASTER” at “2”. In the PRO20 case you get a poor signal to noise ratio that will be fully amplified by the master while on the second we have a good signal to noise ratio only amplified by “2”. As a result, the background noise is greater in the PRO20 case than in the second one.
5.4. Cleaning
The control panel must not be cleaned with any dissolvent, abrasive or petroleum derivated substance else paint and silk-printing could be damaged. Whenever cleaning should be necessary use a soft cloth slightly wet with water and neutral liquid soap or with a solution of water and alcohol at 50%. Be careful that no liquid gets into the mixer. Never use sharp or erosive objects to scratch the control panel. Should any liquid get into the mixer, do not use any cleaning sprays; send the unit to the nearest ECLER Technical Service.
