SAFETY INFORMATION
WARNINGS
IMPORTANT: Read this owner’s manual carefully and completely before trying to assemble, oper­ate, or service this fireplace. Im­proper use of this fireplace can cause serious injury or death from burns, fire, explosions, electrical shock, and carbon monoxide poisoning.

poisoning may lead to death!
This fireplace is a vented product. This fireplace will not produce any gas leakage into your home if properly installed. This fireplace must be properly installed by a qualified service person. The glass door must be properly seated and sealed. If this unit is not properly installed by a qualified service person with glass door properly seated and sealed, gas leakage can occur.
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Early signs
of carbon monoxide poisoning resemble the flu, with headaches, dizziness, or nausea. If you have these signs, the fireplace may not have been installed properly. Get fresh air at once! Have fireplace inspected and ser­viced by a qualified service person. Some people are more affected by carbon monox­ide than others. These include pregnant women, people with heart or lung disease or anemia, those under the influence of alcohol, and those at high altitudes.
Propane/LP gas and natural gas are both odorless. An odor-making agent is added to each of these gases. The odor helps you detect a gas leak. However, the odor added to these gases can fade. Gas may be present even though no odor exists.
Make certain you read and understand all warnings. Keep this manual for reference. It is your guide to safe and proper operation of this fireplace.
WARNING: Any change to this fireplace or its controls can be dangerous.
1. This appliance is only for use with the type of gas indicated on the rating plate. This appliance is not convertible for use with other gases unless a certified kit is used.
2. For propane/LP fireplace, do not place propane/LP supply tank(s) inside any structure. Locate propane/LP supply tank(s) outdoors. To prevent perfor­mance problems, do not use propane/LP fuel tank of less than 100 lbs. capacity.
3. If you smell gas
• shut off gas supply
• do not try to light any appliance
• do not touch any electrical switch; do
not use any phone in your building
• immediately call your gas supplier
from a neighbor’s phone. Follow the gas supplier's instructions
• if you cannot reach you gas supplier ,
call the fire department.
4. Never install the fireplace
• in a recreational vehicle
• where curtains, furniture, clothing, or
other flammable objects are less than 42" from the front, top, or sides of the fireplace
• in high traffic areas
• in windy or drafty areas
5. This fireplace reaches high tempera­tures. Keep children and adults away from hot surfaces to avoid burns or clothing ignition. Fireplace will remain hot for a time after shutdown. Allow surfaces to cool before touching.
6. Carefully supervise young children when they are in the room with fireplace.
7. Do not modify this fireplace under any circumstances. Any parts removed for servicing must be replaced prior to op­erating fireplace.
8. Turn fireplace off and let cool before servicing, installing, or repairing. Only a qualified service person should in­stall, service, or repair this fireplace. Have fireplace inspected annually by a qualified service person.
9. You must keep control compartments, burners, and circulating air passages clean. More frequent cleaning may be needed due to excessive lint and dust from carpeting, bedding material, etc. Turn off the gas valve and pilot light before cleaning fireplace.
10. Have venting system inspected annu­ally by a qualified service person. If needed, have venting system cleaned or repaired. See Cleaning and Mainte- nance, page 28.
11. Keep the area around your fireplace clear of combustible materials, gaso­line, and other flammable vapor and liquids. Do not run fireplace where these are used or stored. Do not place items such as clothing or decorations on or around fireplace.
12. Do not use this fireplace to cook food or burn paper or other objects.
13. Do not use any solid fuels (wood, coal, paper, cardboard, etc.) in this fireplace. Use only the gas type indicated on fire­place nameplate.
14. This appliance, when installed, must be electrically grounded in accordance with local codes or, in the absence of local codes, with the National Electri-
cal Code, ANS/NFPA 70, or the Cana­dian Electrical Code, CSA C22.1.
15. Do not obstruct the flow of combus­tion and ventilation air in any way . Pro­vide adequate clearances around air openings into the combustion chamber along with adequate accessibility clear­ance for servicing and proper operation.
16. Do not install fireplace directly on car ­peting, vinyl tile, or any combustible material other than wood. The fireplace must set on a metal or wood panel ex­tending the full width and depth of the fireplace.
17. Do not use fireplace if any part has been exposed to or under water. Immediately call a qualified service person to ar­range for replacement of the unit.
18. Do not operate fireplace if any log is broken.
19. Do not use a blower insert, heat ex­changer insert, or other accessory not approved for use with this fireplace.
20. Do not operate fireplace with glass door removed, cracked, or broken.

PRODUCT FEATURES
OPERATION
This direct-vent fireplace is clean burning and vents easily through outside walls or vertically using outside air for combustion. Heat is generated by both realistic flames and glowing embers. When used without the blower accessory, the fireplace requires no electricity making it ideal for emergency backup heat.
PIEZO IGNITOR
This fireplace has a piezo ignitor. This sys­tem requires no matches, batteries, or other sources to light fireplace.

Chase - A boxlike enclosure to protect
venting from the elements when the venting run is on the outside of a structure.
Mastic - A pliable sealant for use around the
vent terminal.
Snorkel Termination - A box that raises the
horizontal termination above ground level clearances.
Vent Terminal - Mounted on an outside
wall or roof to separate the inlet and outlet of the vent system and protect it from weather.
Vinyl Siding Standoff - A metal box that
separates the vent cap from vinyl siding.
Wall Thimble/Firestop - A metal plate used
to secure the vent pipe when it passes through a wall or ceiling.

LOCATION AND SPACE REQUIREMENTS
Determine the safest and most efficient loca­tion for your FMI direct-vent fireplace. Make sure that rafters and wall studs are not in the way of the venting system. Choose a loca­tion where the heat output is not affected by drafts, air conditioning ducts, windows or doors. Figure 2 shows some common loca­tions. Read all venting information in this manual. Be aware of all restrictions and precautions before deciding the exact loca­tion for your fireplace.
When deciding the location of your fire­place, follow these rules:
1. Do not connect this fireplace to a chim­ney flue serving a separate solid-fuel burning fireplace or appliance.
2. Due to high temperatures, do not lo­cate this fireplace in high traffic areas or near furniture or draperies.
3. Proper clearances must be maintained.
4. If your fireplace is to be installed di­rectly on carpeting, vinyl tile, or any combustible material other than wood, it must be installed on a metal or wood panel extending the full width and depth of the fireplace. See Figure 3.

FRAMING AND FINISHING
Figures 4 and 5 show typical framing of this fireplace. Figure 6 on page 5 shows framing for corner installation. All minimum clear­ances must be met. Do not install fireplace directly on carpeting, vinyl tile, or any com­bustible material other than wood. The fire­place must set on a metal or wood panel extending the full width and depth of the fireplace.
See Accessories on pages 36 and 37 for mantel kits available for this fireplace. If you are using a separate combustible mantel piece, refer to Figure 7 on page 5 for proper installation height. You can install noncom­bustible mantels at any height above the fireplace. may discolor!

GENERAL VENTING
These models are approved for use with FMI 7" direct-vent pipe components and terminations.
Your fireplace is approved to be vented either through the side wall, or vertically using the following guidelines:
• Only use FMI venting components or kits

• Minimum clearance between vent pipes and combustible materials is 1" (25 mm), except where stated otherwise.
• Combustible material may be flush with the top front of fireplace with a maxi­mum thickness of 3/4".
• Do not recess venting terminals into a wall or siding.
• If exterior wall is vinyl, you must use a vinyl siding standoff.
• Install horizontal venting with a 1/4" rise for every 12" of run toward the termination.
• You may paint the vent terminal with 450ºF (232ºC) heat-resistant paint to co­ordinate with the exterior finish.
• There must not be any obstruction such as bushes, garden sheds, fences, decks, or utility buildings within 24" from the front of the termination cap.
• Do not locate termination cap where ex­cessive snow or ice build up may occur. Be sure to clear vent termination area af­ter snow falls to prevent accidental block­age of venting system. When using snow blowers, do not direct snow towards vent termination area.
Location of Vent Termination
When locating vent termination, it is impor­tant to observe the minimum clearances shown in Figure 8, page 6. You will avoid extra framing by positioning your fireplace against an already existing framing mem­ber. The sides of the fireplace may be posi­tioned directly against combustible walls.

VENTING INSTALLATION
WARNING: Read all instruc­tions completely and thoroughly before attempting installation. Fail­ure to do so could result in serious injury, property damage or loss of life. Operation of improperly in­stalled and maintained venting sys­tem could result in serious injury, property damage or loss of life.
WARNING: Seal all vent con-
nections. Seal only the outer pipe connections with high tempera­ture silicone (600°F/316° C). Be­fore joining elbows and pipes, ap­ply a bead of high temperature silicone sealant (GE RTV 106/ Loctite RTV 81585) to the male end of the elbow or pipe. High tem­perature silicone must also be used to re-seal any connections after maintenance to venting system.
NOTICE: Failure to follow these instructions will void the warranty.
INSTALLATION PRECAUTIONS
Consult local building codes before begin­ning the installation. The installer must make sure to select the proper vent system for installation. Before installing vent kit, the installer must read this fireplace manual and vent kit instructions.
Only a qualified service person should in­stall venting system. The installer must fol­low these safety rules:
• Wear gloves and safety glasses for protection
• Use extreme caution when using ladders or when on roof tops
• Be aware of electrical wiring locations in walls and ceilings
The following actions will void the war­ranty on your venting system:
• Installation of any damaged venting component
• Unauthorized modification of the vent­ing system
• Installation of any component part not manufactured or approved by DESA International
• Installation other than as instructed by these instructions
WARNING: This gas fireplace and vent assembly must be vented directly to the outside. The venting system must NEVER be attached to a chimney serving a separate solid fuel burning ap­pliance. Each gas appliance must use a separate vent system. Do not use common vent systems.
WARNING: Horizontal sec­tions of this vent system require a minimum clearance of 2" from the top of the pipe and 1" minimum to the sides and bottom. 1 1/2" clear­ance is required where termina­tion penetrates a combustible wall. Vertical sections of this sys­tem require a minimum of 1" clear­ance to combustible materials on all sides of the pipe.
INSTALLATION PLANNING
There are two basic types of direct-vent installation:
• Horizontal T ermination
• Vertical Termination It is important to select the proper length of vent
pipe for the type of termination you choose. It is also important to note the wall thickness.
For Horizontal Termination: Select the
amount of vertical rise desired. The horizon­tal run of venting must have 1/4" rise for every 12" of run towards the termination.
WARNING: Never run the vent downward as this may cause ex­cessive temperatures which could cause a fire.
You may use one or two 90° elbows in this vent configuration. See Horizontal Termina- tion Configurations on pages 10 and 11.
For Vertical Termination: Measure the dis-
tance from the fireplace flue outlet to the ceiling. Add the ceiling thickness, the verti­cal rise in an attic or second story, and allow for sufficient vent height above the roofline.
You may use one or two 90° elbows in this vent configuration. See Vertical Termination Configurations on pages 13 and 14.
Note:
You may use two 45° elbows in place of a 90° elbow. You must follow rise to run ratios when using 45° elbows.
For two-story applications, firestops are re­quired at each floor level. If an offset is needed in the attic, additional pipe and el­bows will be required.
You may use a chase with a vent termination with exposed pipe on the exterior of the house. See Installing Vent System in a Chase, below.
Your FMI direct-vent fireplace has been tested for a minimum 3' rise with a maxi­mum 10" wall thickness. The maximum horizontal run is 20' with 8' vertical rise (see Installation for Horizontal Termination, page 8). The maximum vertical run is 30' (see Installation for Vertical Termination, page 12).
It is very important that the venting system maintain its balance between the combus­tion air intake and the flue gas exhaust. Certain limitations apply to vent configura­tions and must be strictly followed.
Installing Vent System in a Chase
A chase is a vertical boxlike structure built to enclose venting that runs along the out­side of a building. A chase is not required for such venting.
NOTICE: Treatment of firestops and construction of the chase may vary from building type to building type. These instructions are not substitutes for the re­quirements of local building codes. You must follow all local building codes .
Note:
When installing in a chase, you should insulate the chase as you would the outside walls of your home. This is especially im­portant in cold climates. Minimum clear­ance between vent pipes and combustible materials such as insulation is 1".
After framing the chase (see Framing and Finishing on page 4) install the vent system by following the installation instructions.

INSTALLATION FOR HORIZONTAL TERMINATION
1. Determine the route your horizontal venting will take. of the horizontal vent termination on the exterior wall must meet all local and national building codes and must not be easily blocked or obstructed.
WARNING: Do not recess vent
terminal into a wall or siding.
Snorkel terminations are available for terminations requiring a vertical rise on the exterior of the building (see Figures 9 and 10). Follow the same installation procedures as used for standard horizon­tal terminations. If installing the snor­kel termination below grade (basement applications), you must provide proper drainage to prevent water from entering the snorkel termination (see Figure 10). Do not back fill around the snorkel ter­mination.
2. Rigid vent pipes and fittings have spe­cial twist-lock connections. Assemble the desired combination of pipe and el­bows to the appliance adaptor with pipe seams oriented towards the wall or floor.
Twist-lock Procedure: The female ends of the pipes and fittings have four locking lugs (indentations). These lugs will slide straight into matching slots on the male ends of adjacent pipes and fit­tings. (All connections must be sealed with high temperature silicone sealant as specified in the second warning state­ment on page 7.) Push the pipe sections together and twist one section clockwise approximately one-quarter turn until the sections are fully locked. See Figure 11, page 9. must be supported every three feet. Use wall straps for this purpose.

3. Attach vent pipe assembly to the fire­place. Set fireplace in front of it’s per ­manent location to insure minimum clearances. Mark the wall for a 10" square hole (for noncombustible ma­terial such as masonry block or con­crete, a 7 1/2" diameter hole is accept­able). See Figure 12. The center of the hole should line up with the center­line of the horizontal rigid vent pipe. Cut a 10"x10" (254mm x 254mm) square hole through combustible ex­terior wall (7 1/2" [190mm] diameter hole if noncombustible). Frame as nec­essary (see Figure 12).

4. Apply a bead of non-hardening mastic around the outside edge of the vent cap. Position the vent cap in the center of the 7 1/2" or 10" hole on the exterior wall with the arrow on the vent cap pointing up. Insure proper clearance of 1" to combustibles is maintained. At­tach the vent cap with four wood screws supplied (see Figure 13).

: Re­place the wood screws with appropri­ate fasteners for stucco, brick, concrete, or other types of siding.
WARNING: Do not recess vent termination in to any wall. This will cause a fire hazard.
For vinyl siding, stucco, or wood ex­terior use vinyl siding standoffs be­tween vent cap and exterior wall. The vinyl siding standoff prevents exces­sive heat from melting the vinyl sid­ing material. Bolt the vent cap to the standoff. Apply non-hardening mastic around outside edge of the standoff in­stead of the vent cap assembly. Use wood screws provided to attach the standoff. See Figure 14.
5. Slide the wall thimble over the vent pipe before connecting the horizontal run to the vent cap (see Figure 15).
6. Carefully move the fireplace with vent assembly attached toward the wall and insert the vent pipe into the horizontal termination. The pipe overlap should be a minimum of 1 1/4". Apply silicone to the outer pipe connection. Fasten all vent connections with screws provided. Refer to Fir eplace Installation on page 16 for instructions on securing unit to framing or floor.
7. Slide the wall thimble against the inte­rior wall surface and attach with screws provided (see Figure 15).

Figures 16 through 19 show different con­figurations for venting with horizontal ter­mination. INSTALLATION FOR VERTICAL TERMINATION

in all vertical installations.
1. Determine the route your vertical vent­ing will take. If ceiling joists, roof rafters, or other framing will obstruct the venting system, consider an offset (see Figure 20) to avoid cutting load bearing members. attention to these installation instruc­tions for required clearances (air space) to combustibles when passing through ceilings, walls, roofs, enclosures, attic rafters, etc. Do not pack air spaces with insulation. Also note maximum verti­cal rise of the venting system and any maximum horizontal offset limitations. Offsets must fall within the parameters shown in Figure 8 on page 6.
2. Set the fireplace in desired location. Drop a plumb line down from the ceil­ing to the position of the fireplace exit flue. Mark the center point where the vent will penetrate the ceiling. Drill a small locating hole at this point.

Flat Ceiling Installation
1. Cut a 10" square hole in the ceiling us­ing the locating hole as a center point. The opening should be framed to 10"x10" (254mm x 254mm) inside di­mensions, as shown in Figure 12 on page 9 using framing lumber the same size as the ceiling joists. If the area above the ceiling is an insulated ceil­ing or a room, nail firestop from the top side. This prevents loose insulation from falling into the required clearance space. Otherwise, install firestop below the framed hole. The firestop should be installed with no less than three nails per side (see Figure 21).
2. Assemble the desired lengths of pipe and elbows necessary to reach from the fireplace flue up through the firestop. All connections must be sealed with high temperature silicone sealant as specified in the second warning state­ment on page 7. Be sure all pipe and elbow connections are fully twist­locked (see Figure 11, page 9).
3. Cut a hole in the roof using the locating hole as a center point. (Cover any ex­posed open vent pipes before cutting hole in roof.) The 10"x10" hole must be measured on the horizontal; actual length may be larger depending on the pitch of the roof. There must be a 1" clearance from the vent pipe to combus­tible materials. Frame the opening as shown in Figure 12, page 9.
If area above is a room, install firestop above framed hole.
4. Connect a section of pipe and extend up through the hole.
Note:
If an offset is needed to avoid obstructions, you must support the vent pipe every 3 feet. Use wall straps for this purpose (see Figure 20). Whenever possible, use 45° elbows instead of 90° elbows. The 45° elbow offers less re­striction to the flow of the flue gases and intake air.
5. Place the flashing over the pipe section(s) extending through the roof. Secure the base of the flashing to the roof and framing with roofing nails. Be sure roofing material overlaps the top edge of the flashing as shown in Figure
20. There must be a 1" clearance from the vent pipe to combustible materials.
6. Continue to add pipe sections until the height of the vent cap meets the mini­mum building code requirements de­scribed in Figure 8 on page 6. must increase vent height for steep roof pitches. Nearby trees, adjoining rooflines, steep pitched roofs, and other similar fac­tors may cause poor draft or down-draft­ing in high winds. Increasing the vent height may solve this problem.
7. Twist-lock the vent cap onto the last section of vent pipe and seal outer pipe connection with high temperature sili­cone sealant as specified in the second warning statement on page 7.
Note:
If the vent pipe passes through any occupied areas above the first floor, including storage spaces and closets, you must enclose pipe. You may frame and sheetrock the enclo­sure with standard construction material. Make sure and meet the minimum allowable clear­ances to combustibles. Do not fill any of the required air spaces with insulation.

Cathedral Ceiling Installation
1. Remove shingles or other roof cover-
ing as necessary to cut the rectangular hole for the support box. Mark the out­line of the cathedral ceiling support box on the roof sheathing using the locat­ing hole as a center point.
2. Cut the hole 1/8" larger than the sup-
port box outline (see Figure 22, page 13).

3. Lower the support box through the hole in the roof until the bottom of the box extends at least 2" below the ceiling (see Figure 22). Align the support box vertically and horizontally using a level. T emporarily tack the support box in place through the inside walls and into the roof sheathing.
4. Using tin snips, cut the support box from the top corners down to the roofline and fold the resulting flaps over the roof sheathing (see Figure 23). Apply a bead of non-hardening mastic around the top edges of the support box to make a seal between the box and the roof. Nail in place with roofing nails. Remove any combustible material that might be in­side of the support box.
5. Complete the cathedral ceiling instal­lation by following the same proce­dures outlined in steps 2 through 7 for Flat Ceiling Installation, page 12
.

HIGH ALTITUDE INSTALLATION
Your FMI direct-vent fireplace has been AGA tested and approved for elevations from 0-2000 feet and CGA certified for elevations from 0-4500 feet.
When installing this fireplace at an elevation above 2000 feet (in the USA), you may need to decrease the input rating by changing the existing burner orifice to a smaller size. Re­duce input 4% for each 1000 feet above sea level. Check with your local gas company for proper orifice size identification.
When installing this fireplace at an eleva­tion above 4500 feet (in Canada), check with local authorities.
Consult your local gas company to help de­termine the proper orifice for your location.

FIREPLACE INSTALLATION
NOTICE: This fireplace is in­tended for use as supplemental heat. Use this fireplace along with your primary heating system. Do not install this fireplace as your primary heat source. If you have a central heating system, you may run system’s circulating blower while using fireplace. This will help circulate the heat through­out the house. In the event of a power outage, you can use this fireplace as a heat source.
WARNING: A qualified ser­vice person must install fireplace. Follow all local codes.
CAUTION: This fireplace cre­ates warm air currents. These cur­rents move heat to wall surfaces next to fireplace. Installing fire­place next to vinyl or cloth wall coverings or operating fireplace where impurities (such as to­bacco smoke, aromatic candles, cleaning fluids, oil or kerosene lamps, etc.) in the air exist, may discolor walls.
Note:
Your fireplace is designed to be used in zero clearance installations. Wall or fram­ing material can be placed directly against any exterior surface on the rear, sides, or top of your fireplace, except where standoff spacers are integrally attached. If standoff spacers are attached to your fireplace, these spacers can be placed directly against wall or framing material. See framing details on page 4.
Place the fireplace into position and shim with noncombustible material if needed. Nail the side flanges to the framing to secure the unit in place. There are two floor brack­ets included with each unit. Use these as an alternative method of securing the fireplace.

Use proper gas type for the fireplace unit you are installing. If you have conflicting gas types, do not install fireplace. See re­tailer where you purchased the fireplace for proper fireplace according to your gas type.
INSTALLING OPTIONAL BLOWER ACCESSORY
NOTICE: If installing blower in an existing fireplace with gas con­nections, shut off gas supply and disconnect heater from gas sup­ply. Contact a qualified service person to do this.
Attaching Thermal Switch to DA3610TA Thermostatically­Controlled Blower
When installing the DA3610T thermostati­cally-controlled blower accessory, you must first secure the thermal switch to the blower.
1. Remove the two hex head screws on the blower assembly as shown in Figure 28.
2. Place the green wire between the bot­tom hole on the thermal switch bracket and the bottom hole on the blower as­sembly. Insert one of the hex screws into all three pieces and tighten.
3. Insert the top screw through the ther­mal switch bracket and into the blower assembly. Tighten screw.
4. Connect the blue wire on the blower assembly to the right side of the ther­mal switch.
5. Connect the black wire to the left side of the thermal switch.

1. Open lower louver panel or remove for easier access.
2. Place the blower against the lower rear wall of firebox outer wrapper with the exhaust port directed upward. Align the holes in the top mounting tabs of blower with holes in wall of wrapper (see Figure 29, page 17). Using the two screws provided, mount blower and tighten screws securely.

thermal switch is comfortably between the back of the firebox and the blower as shown in Figure 30, page 17.
3. Be sure to securely attach all wire ter­minals to terminals on blower motor (and thermal switch where applicable) and that the screw retaining the green ground wire is tight.
4. Remove screws securing the switch plate to the bottom of the firebox and set aside.
5. Place speed control against back of this plate and push the plastic control shaft through opening (see Figure 31, page 17).
6. While supporting speed control, secure control shaft with lock nut by pushing and turning lock nut with pliers clock­wise until tight against the plate. Place control knob provided onto shaft (see Figure 31, page 17).
7. Replace plate containing the switch and tighten screws securely.

8. Plug in blower power cord.
a. If your fir eplace system is installed
as a freestanding unit with an ac­cessory mantel, determine whether
the power cord will exit the left side or the right side of the firebox. In­stall one plastic bushing provided into the 1 1/2" hole in the outer cas­ing through which the power cord will exit. Install the second plastic bushing provided into the floor sup­port bracket if exiting through the right side (see Figure 32). Route power cord through (both) plastic bushing(s) and plug the power cord into a properly grounded 3-prong wall receptacle near the firebox.
b.If your fireplace system installation
is recessed and/or pre-wired, a qualified installer must make all elec­trical connections for the outlet kit included with the fireplace.
9. Check to make sure that the power cord is completely clear of the blower wheel and that there are no other foreign ob­jects in blower wheel. Turn blower on and check for operation. Turn blower off by rotating knob fully counterclock­wise before continuing.
WARNING: Never touch the
blower wheel while in operation.
10. Peel off the backing paper and stick the supplied wiring diagram decal on the firebox bottom approximately 3" to the right of the blower speed control bracket (Figure 32).
WARNING: Failure to position the parts in accordance with sup­plied diagrams or failure to use only parts specifically approved with this heater may result in dam­age or personal injury.
11. Connect or reconnect gas supply to fire­place per Connecting Fir eplace to Gas Supply on page 19 of this manual.

For propane/LP connection only, the in­staller must supply an external regulator. The external regulator will reduce incoming gas pressure. You must reduce incoming gas pressure to between 11 and 14 inches of water. If you do not reduce incoming gas pressure, heater regulator damage could occur. Install external regulator with the vent pointing down as shown in Figure 33. Pointing the vent down protects it from freezing rain or sleet.
CAUTION: Use only new, black iron or steel pipe. Inter­nally-tinned copper tubing may be used in certain areas. Check your local codes. Use pipe of 1/2" diameter or greater to allow proper gas volume to fireplace. If pipe is too small, undue loss of pressure will occur.
Installation must include an equipment shutoff valve, union, and plugged 1/8" NPT tap. Locate NPT tap within reach for test gauge hook up. NPT tap must be upstream from fireplace (see Figure 34).

Check your building codes for any special requirements for locating equipment shutoff valve to fireplaces.
Apply pipe joint sealant lightly to male threads. This will prevent excess sealant from going into pipe. Excess sealant in pipe could result in clogged fireplace valves.
CAUTION: Use pipe joint seal­ant that is resistant to liquid pe­troleum (LP) gas.
We recommend that you install a sediment trap/drip leg in supply line as shown in Figure 35. Locate sediment trap/drip leg where it is within reach for cleaning. Install in piping system between fuel supply and heater. Locate sediment trap/drip leg where trapped matter is not likely to freeze. A sediment trap traps moisture and contami­nants. This keeps them from going into fireplace gas controls. If sediment trap/drip leg is not installed or is installed wrong, fireplace may not run properly.

Installing Remote Receiver
1. Open bottom louver and locate the switch bracket on the left.
2. Unscrew the switch bracket. Lean bracket forward so you are able to ac­cess the back of the remote receiver.
3. Locate the battery clip mounted on the back of the receiver. Slide a 9-volt al­kaline battery (not included) through the clip (see Figure 39).
4. Attach the terminal wires to the battery.
5. Remove wire from TH to TPTH on control valve (see Figure 40).
6. Connect wires from receiver to TH and TPTH to control valve (see Figure 41).
7. Replace the switch bracket.

INSTALLING OPTIONAL WALL MOUNTED THERMOSTAT - GWMT1
WARNING: Installation must be done by a qualified installer familiar with low voltage wiring procedures.
WARNING: Do not connect this thermostat to any electrical source! Electrical shock and/or fire hazard will occur.
NOTICE: The GWMT1 includes 25' of wire for installation. Your fire­place includes 15' of wire for ac­cessory installation. Choose the length that best fits your needs when installing this accessory.
1. Open lower louver panel. The valve is attached to the underside of the fire­box assembly.
2. Disconnect the wire that runs from TH to TPTH from the valve as shown in Figure 40.
3. Connect one terminal of the provided wire for the wall thermostat to the TPTH terminal on the valve. Connect remain­ing wire terminal to the TH terminal on the valve. Make sure that the wire termi­nals are in the positions on the unit as pictured in Figure 44. If wires are not connected as shown the thermostat will not work.

4. Route the wire through openings pro­vided on the sides of the fireplace to a convenient location to mount your ther­mostat (no outside wall).

5. Gently remove the cover of the ther­mostat from the base. Grasp the sides of the cover firmly and pull to separate from the base.
6. Feed the electrical wires through the rectangular slots (from the back) on each side of the base (see Figure 45).
WARNING: Do not connect this thermostat to a power source. Electrical shock and/or fire haz­ard will occur.
7. Connect one bare wire end to each ter­minal (“W” and “R”) of the thermostat base (see Figure 46).
8. Install the base to the wall with screws provided with thermostat.
9. Move the temperature adjustment back and forth to insure the bimetal is free from restrictions.
10. Replace the cover onto the base. (Upon installation, the thermostat must be al­lowed to stabilize at room temperature for a minimum of 30 minutes for proper operation.)
11. Set the temperature adjustment to the desired setting.
This thermostat has been electronically calibrated at the factory . No adjustment or leveling is necessary.

INSTALLING OPTIONAL WALL MOUNT SWITCH GWMS2
NOTICE: The GWMS2 includes 25' of wire for installation. Your fireplace includes 15' of wire for accessory installation. Choose the length that best fits your needs when installing this accessory.
1. Connect one terminal of the provided wire for the wall switch to the TPTH terminal on the valve. Connect remain­ing wire terminal to the TH terminal on the valve. Make sure that the wire terminals are in the positions on the unit as pictured in Figure 41, page 21. If wires are not connected as shown the switch will not work.
2. Route the wire through openings pro­vided on the sides of the fireplace to a convenient location to mount your switch.
3. Connect one bare wire end to each of the terminals of the GWMS2 wall switch.
4. Install the wall switch and cover in the wall.
REMOVING/REPLACING GLASS DOOR
You must remove glass door to install op­tional brick liners, logs, lava rock, and em­ber material.
CAUTION: Do not operate this fireplace with a broken glass door panel or without the glass door panel securely in place. For re­placement part information see

1. Remove the upper louver panel by lift­ing upward and out (see Figure 47).
2. Remove the screws from the three tabs at the top of the glass door while hold­ing door securely keeping it from fall­ing forward.
3. Grasp door by both sides and ease it upward off of the lower bracket (see Figure 48).
4. T o replace glass door, follow the above instructions in reverse.

Attaching Magnetic Decorative Brass Strips (Optional Installation)
Before attaching strips to fireplace, remove plastic film from brass pieces. After install­ing door, attach these strips to the top and bottom of glass door frame.

WARNING: If fireplace has been running, turn off and un­plug fireplace. Let cool before installing brick liner.
This brick liner kit is optional. You may purchase brick liner from your local retailer or see Accessories, pages 36 and 37.
7. Install the right brick panel using the same method described in step 5.
8. Slide the right retainer bracket against the right side brick panel. Tighten the bracket screw. This secures both the right side and rear brick panels.
9. Follow instructions on page 24 to install logs, lava rock, and ember material.
10. Replace glass door (see page 22).
Rear Brick Panel
CAUTION: Always handle brick panels with two hands. Do not force brick panels into place. Excessive force will break brick panels.
1. Remove glass door. See Removing/Re­placing Glass Door, page 22.
2. If installing brick liner in new fireplace, go to step 3. If installing brick liner in an existing fireplace, carefully remove logs, lava rock, and ember material.
3. Install rear brick panel first. Rest bot­tom edge of panel on back edge of grate (see Figure 49).
4. Loosely secure retainer brackets to grate. Brackets are adjustable left to right to allow proper placement of panel. These will hold rear panel in place while installing side panels.
5. Install left side brick panel by sliding it between the grate and the side of the firebox (see Figure 50).
6. Slide the left retainer bracket against the left side brick panel. Tighten the bracket screw. This secures both the left side and rear brick panels.

INSTALLING LOGS, LAVA ROCK AND GLOWING EMBERS
WARNING: Failure to position the parts in accordance with these diagrams or failure to use only parts specifically approved with this heater may result in property damage or personal injury.
Each log is marked with a number. These numbers will help you identify the log when installing. It is very important to install these logs exactly as instructed. Do not modify logs. Only use logs supplied with fireplace.
Remove glass door. See Removing/Replacing Glass Door, page 22. Install logs according to the following instructions.
1. Place log #1 (back log) on top of grate. Make sure the notches in the bottom of the log fit over the grate (see Figure 51).
2. Rest log #2 (large front log) on the pins on the front part of the grate (see Figure 52).
3. Place log #3 (left log) onto the rear and front logs. Make sure it is seated prop­erly into the notch on the front log and over the raised triangular portion of the rear log as shown in Figure 53.
4. Place log #4 (right log) onto the front left part of the grate making sure the notches fits over the prong of the grate (see Figure 54).
5. Place lava rock along sides and front of firebox bottom in areas that are vis­ible only. It is not necessary to use all of the lava rock provided.
6. Pull ember material apart into pieces no larger than a dime. Place these pieces loosely and sparingly directly onto the exposed section of the front burner and along the space between the burner and grate prongs (see Figure 55). This will create the glowing ember ap­pearance as the flame touches the em­ber material. Do not block air slots by using too much ember material in one area. It is not necessary to use all of the ember material provided.
7. Replace the glass door. See Removing/ Replacing Glass Door, page 22.
WARNING: The glass door must be securely in place before running this fireplace. Do not run this fireplace if glass is missing or broken.

LIGHTING
WARNING: If you do not fol­low these instructions exactly, a fire or explosion may result caus­ing property damage, personal injury or loss of life.
A. This appliance has a pilot which must
be lighted by hand. When lighting the pilot, follow these instructions exactly .
B. BEFORE LIGHTING smell all
around the appliance area for gas. Be sure to smell next to the floor because some gas is heavier than air and will settle on the floor.
WHA T TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS
• Do not try to light any appliance.
• Do not touch any electric switch; do not use any phone in your building.
• Immediately call y our gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone. Follow the gas supplier's instructions.
C. Use only your hand to push in or turn
the gas control knob. Ne ver use tools. If the knob will not push in or turn by hand, don't try to repair it, call a qualified service technician. For ce or attempted repair may result in a f ire or explosion.
D. Do not use this appliance if any part
has been under water . Immediately call a qualified service technician to inspect the appliance and to replace any part of the control system and any gas con­trol which has been under water.
LIGHTING
INSTRUCTIONS
1. STOP! Read the safety information in column one.
2. Open lower louver panel.
3. Disconnect the wire that runs from TH to TPTH from the contr ol valve.
4. Turn off all electric power to the fireplace.
5. Push in gas control knob slightly and turn clockwise to “OFF”.
6. Wait f ive (5) minutes to clear out any gas. Then smell for gas, including near the floor. If you smell gas, STOP! Follow “B” in the safety in­formation in column one. If you don't smell gas, go to the next step.
7. The pilot is located by the main burner and should not require ac­cessing for lighting.
8. T urn gas control knob counter clock­wise to “PILOT”.
9. Push in gas control knob all the way and hold. Immediately light the pi­lot by repeatedly depressing the piezo spark ignitor until a flame appears. Continue to hold for about one (1) minute after the pilot is lit. Release gas control knob and it will pop back. Pilot should remain lit. If it goes out, repeat steps 5 through 8.
• If gas control knob does not pop
up when released, stop and immediately call your service technician or gas supplier.
• If the pilot will not stay lit after sev-
eral tries, turn the gas control knob to “OFF” and call your service technician or gas supplier.

Thermostat Control Operation
(Optional GHRCTA Series Only) The thermostat control setting on the remote control unit can be set to any comfort level between WARMER and COOLER. The burners will turn on and off auto­matically to maintain the comfort level you select. The ideal comfort setting will vary by household depending upon the amount of space to be heated, the output of the central heating system, etc.
NOTICE: You must light the pilot before using the hand-held re­mote control unit. See
Instructions
on page 25.
1. After lighting, let pilot flame burn for about one minute. Turn gas control knob to ON position. Adjust varia ble control knob anywhere between HI and LO. Slide the selector switch to the REMOTE position (see Figure
57).
Note:
The burners may light if hand-held remote ON button was on when selector switch was last turned off. Y ou can no w turn the bur ners on and off with the hand-held remote control unit.
IMPORTANT
: Do not leave the selec­tor switch in the REMOTE position when the pilot is not lit. This will drain the battery.
IMPORTANT:
Be sure to press the ON/OFF buttons on the hand-held remote control unit for up to 3 sec­onds to assure proper operation.
Lighting
GHRC Series Operation:
2a. Press the ON/OFF b utton to turn the
burners on and off. When turning burners off, the pilot will remain lit.
GHRCTA Series Operation:
2b. Press the AUTO/ON/OFF button on
the hand-held remote control (see Fig­ure 58). The lights to the left of the button will show A UTO, ON, or OFF.
• In the ON mode, the burners will ignite. The heater is in manual mode when ON is lit.
• In the A UTO mode, the thermostat in the hand-held remote unit con­trols the room temperature. To in­crease the room temperature, pr ess the top arrow of the TEMP b utton. To lower the room temperature, press the bottom arrow of the TEMP button. At higher settings the heater will run longer.

This remote contr ol has been specially engineered to take an air temperature sample ev­ery minute in the auto mode. It will not respond immediately to the temperature setting being turned up or down.
IMPORTANT:
The hand-held re­mote control unit must be near the heater. Do not keep the hand-held remote control unit too close to the heater. The thermostat on the hand-held remote control unit will heat up too quickly and turn the heater off.
3. To turn the burner off, press the AUTO/ON/OFF button until OFF lights. The pilot will remain lit.

Light the fireplace as instructed in Light­ing Instructions on page 25. Set wall ther-
mostat to desired temperature. This thermostat has been electronically
calibrated at the factory and requires no adjustment or leveling.
Upon installation, the thermostat must be allowed to stabilize at room tempera­ture for a minimum of 30 minutes for proper operation.
To turn the fireplace off, adjust thermo­stat to the lowest setting and turn the gas control knob back to PILOT. The pilot will remain lit.

the gas control knob on the heater to the OFF position.
OPTIONAL BLOWER
Locate the blower controls by opening the lower louver panel on the fireplace. Blower controls are located on the left side of the switch bracket to the left just inside the louver panel.
Both the GA3700 manual blower and the DA3610TA thermostatically-controlled blower have an ON setting and an OFF setting. The blower will only run when the switch is in the ON position. In the OFF position, the blower will not operate.

Note for DA3610TA Only:
using DA3610TA blower with optional thermostat (wall mounted or remote con­trol) for the fireplace, your fireplace and blower will not turn on and off at the same time. The fireplace may run for several minutes before the blower turns on. After the heater modulates to the pilot position, the blower will continue to run. The blower will shut off after the firebox temperature decreases.
The blower helps distribute heated air from the fireplace. Periodically check the louvers of the firebox and remove any dust, dirt, or other obstructions that will hinder the flow of air.
If you are
INSPECTING BURNERS
Check pilot flame pattern and burner flame patterns often.
PILOT ASSEMBLY
The pilot assembly is factory preset for the proper flame height. Alterations may have occurred during shipping and handling. Call a qualified service person to readjust the pilot if necessary.
The height of the thermopile must be 3/8" to 1/2" above the pilot flame as shown in Figure
60. The thermocouple must be at a height of about 1/8" above the pilot flame. The flame from the pilot burner must extend beyond both the thermocouple and thermopile.
If you pilot assembly does not meet these requirements:
• turn fireplace off (see To Turn Off Gas to Appliance, page 25)
• see Troubleshooting, pages 29 through 31

BURNER FLAME PATTERN
Burner flames will be steady; not lifting or floating. Flame patterns will be different from unit to unit and will vary depending on installation type and weather conditions.
If the vent configuration is installed incor­rectly, the flames will lift or "ghost". This can be dangerous. Inspect the flames after installation to ensure proper installation and performance.
Figure 60 shows a typical flame pattern for DVFH34(P) models.

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
WARNING: Turn off fireplace
and let cool before cleaning.
CAUTION: You must keep con­trol areas, burners, and circulat­ing air passageways of fireplace clean. Inspect these areas of fire­place before each use. Have fire­place inspected yearly by a quali­fied service person. Fireplace may need more frequent cleaning due to excessive lint from carpeting, bedding material, pet hair, etc.
GLASS DOOR
WARNING: Handle glass door panel with care. Do not strike, slam, or otherwise abuse glass. Do not operate fireplace with the glass door removed, cracked, or broken.
WARNING: Do not use abra­sive cleaners as this may damage glass. Use a nonabrasive house­hold glass cleaner to clean glass. Do not clean glass when hot.
WARNING: Only parts sup­plied by the manufacturer should be used when replacing broken or damaged glass door panel (see
Replacement Parts
glass door panel is a complete unit. No substitute materials may be used.
CAUTION: Wear gloves and safety glasses while handling or removing broken glass. Do not remove if glass is hot. Keep chil­dren and pets away from glass.
If glass has been broken, carefully remove glass door (see Removing/Replacing Glass Door, page 22). Vacuum all glass pieces with a shop vac.
CAUTION: Do not vacuum if pieces are hot.
Use only the ceramic glass door replace­ment intended for this fireplace (see Re- placement Parts, page 32 for detail on or­dering). No substitutions may be made. See Removing/Replacing Glass Door, page 22 for instructions for replacing glass door.

• If you remove logs for cleaning, refer to

• Use a vacuum cleaner to remove any car­bon buildup on logs.

VENTING SYSTEM
Conduct annual inspection of the venting system following these guidelines:
1. Check areas of venting system that are
exposed to the weather for corrosion (rust spots or streaks and, in extreme cases, holes). Have these items replaced imme­diately by a qualified service person.
2. Remove the vent cap and shine a flash-
light into the vent. Remove any foreign material.
3. Check for evidence of excessive con-
densation. Continuous condensation can cause corrosion of caps, pipes, and fittings and can be caused by having excessive lateral runs, too many el­bows, or exterior portions of the sys­tem being exposed to cold weather.
4. Inspect joints to verify that no pipe sec-
tion or fitting has been disturbed and loosened. Check mechanical supports such as wall straps for rigidity.
Glass must be cleaned periodically. During start-up it is normal for condensation to form on the inside of the glass causing lint, dust, and other airborne particles to cling to the glass surface. During initial start-up a slight film may form on the glass due to paint curing. The glass should be cleaned several times with a non-ammonia, non­abrasive household cleaner and warm water after the first two weeks of operation. There­after, clean the glass two or three times during each heating season, depending on the usage and circumstances present. Refer to Removing/Replacing Glass Door on page 22 of this manual when removing glass door for cleaning.
PILOT AND BURNERS
• Remove ember material before cleaning burners and replace when cleaning is complete.
• Burner and controls should be cleaned with compressed air to remove dust, dirt, or lint.
• Use a vacuum cleaner or small, soft bristled brush to remove excess dust, dirt, or lint.

LIMITED WARRANTY
DIRECT-VENT FIREPLACE
DESA International warrants this product to be free from defects in materials and components for two (2) years from the date of first purchase, provided that the product has been properly installed, operated and maintained in accordance with all applicable instructions. To make a claim under this warranty the Bill of Sale or cancelled check must be presented.
This warranty is extended only to the original retail purchaser. This warranty covers the cost of part(s) required to restore this heater to proper operating condition and an allowance for labor when provided by a DESA Authorized Service Center. Warranty part(s) MUST be obtained through authorized retailers of this product and/or DESA International who will provide original factory replacement parts. Failure to use original factory replacement parts voids this warranty. The heater MUST be installed by a qualified installer in accordance with all local codes and instructions furnished with the unit.
This warranty does not apply to parts that are not in original condition because of normal wear and tear, or parts that fail or become damaged as a result of misuse, accidents, lack of proper maintenance or defects caused by improper installation. Travel, diagnostic cost, labor, transportation and any and all such other costs related to repairing a defective heater will be the responsibility of the owner.
