46-896 SAFETY SHIELD FOR
12”, 14” AND 16” WOOD LATHES
Fig. 1
Fig. 2
Fig. 3
INTRODUCTION
The 46-896 Safety Shield (Fig.1) is an accessory for
Delta 12” and 16” wood lathes. The shield can also be
retrofitted to earlier 12” to 16” heavy duty wood lathes.
ASSEMBLY
12” WOOD LATHES - On current 12” lathe models, four
holes have been drilled in the rear of the lathe to mount
the safety shield support arm. NOTE: To mount the
safety shield to an earlier model 12” wood lathe, drill four
holes in the rear of the lathe. The dimensions for drilling
mounting holes in an earlier model 12” standard-duty
wood lathe are shown in Fig. 2. The dimensions for
drilling mounting holes in an earlier model 12” heavyduty wood lathe are shown in Fig. 3.
16” WOOD LATHES - On current 16” wood lathes, four
holes have been drilled in the rear of the lathe to mount
the safety shield support arm.
IMPORTANT: The following assembly instructions are
illustrated with the model 46-745 16” Wood Lathe.
Assembly of the safety shield on other Delta 16” and 12”
wood lathes is identical.

1. Attach the mounting bracket (A) Fig. 4, to the rear of
the lathe using four (three of which are shown) 1” hex
head cap screws (B). Place a lockwasher on the screw
first, then a flat washer. Secure it with a hex nut.
2. Attach the two adjustable brackets (C) Fig. 5, to the
mounting bracket (A), with four 1” hex head cap screws
(D). Place a lockwasher on the screw first, then a flat
washer. Secure it with a hex nut. NOTE: Since some
adjustment will be made later, tighten the nuts slightly to
the screws.
3. Attach the two clamping brackets (E) Fig. 6, to
adjustable brackets (C), using four 2-3/4” hex head cap
screws (F) and hex nuts (G).

4. Insert support arm (H) Fig. 7, into clamping brackets
(E) and tighten hardware just enough to hold support
arm in position.
5. The support arm (H) Fig. 7 should be positioned to
its approximate maximum height in set-up. (Information
regarding the adjustment of height of the support arm
can be found on page 4 of this instruction sheet).
After the support arm is in position, tighten all mounting
hardware that attaches the mounting brackets and support arm to the lathe.
6. Place the horizontal bar (L) Fig. 8, of shield assembly into channel (J) Fig. 9, of support arm (H).
8. Insert two 1-1/2” hex head screws (M) Fig. 9, into
the channel (J) of the support arm (H) and tighten.
NOTE: The entire safety shield assembly can be shifted
by loosening the two screws (M) Fig. 9, and sliding
the safety shield assembly. Tighten two screws after all
adjustments.
7. Make certain the bottom of wire backscreen (N)
Fig. 10, rests inside bracket (P) of support arm (H).

9. Insert the ends on the top of backscreen (N) Fig. 11,
into the two pre-drilled holes in the ends of the safety
shield bracket (T) and fasten in place with two push nuts
(R), one of which is shown.
10. The safety shield (N) Fig. 12, is equipped with two
locking levers (S) (one of which is shown). When the
safety shield (N) Fig. 12, is in the down position, the
locking levers (S) will engage the safety shield (N) and
lock it in place. To raise the safety shield (N) Fig. 12, the
locking levers (S) must be released manually by gently
pushing up on locking levers (S) and raising the safety
shield (N). Fig. 13, illustrates the safety shield (N) in the
raised position.
11. Position the horizontal bar (L) Fig. 14, anywhere in
channel (J) of support arm (H) by loosening two screws
(M) and sliding safety shield to the desired position.
NOTE: When moving the bar, hold it firmly to prevent
binding.
12. Depending on the size of the work, the support arm
(H) Fig. 14 can be adjusted up or down. For maximum
operator protection, adjust the support arm (H) Fig. 14,
so that the bottom of the safety shield (N) Fig. 12, when
locked, is positioned a maximum of 1-1/2” to 2” above
the tool rest (V).
