WARNING
FOR YOUR PROTECTION, READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS:
WATER AND MOISTURE: Appliance should not be used near water (e.g. near a bath-
tub, washbowl, kitchen sink, laundry tub, in a wet basement, or near a swimming pool,

MULTIPLE-INPUT VOLTAGE: This equipment may require the use of a different line
cord, attachment plug, or both, depending on the available power source at installation.
Connect this equipment only to the power source indicated on the equipment rear
panel. To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, refer servicing to qualified service
personnel or equivalent.

The cores in the mains lead are coloured in accordance with the following code:
GREEN and YELLOW - Earth BLUE - Neutral BROWN - Live
As colours of the cores in the mains lead of this appliance may not correspond
with the coloured markings identifying the terminals in your plug, proceed as follows:
• The core which is coloured green and yellow must be connected to the
terminal in the plug marked with the letter E, or with the earth symbol, or
coloured green, or green and yellow.
• The core which is coloured blue must be connected to the terminal
marked N or coloured black.
• The core which is coloured brown must be connected to the terminal
marked L or coloured red.
This equipment may require the use of a different line cord, attachment plug, or
both, depending on the available power source at installation. If the attachment
plug needs to be changed, refer servicing to qualified service personnel who
should refer to the table below. The green/yellow wire shall be connected directly to the unit's chassis.
WARNING: If the ground is defeated, certain fault conditions in the unit or in the
system to which it is connected can result in full line voltage between chassis
and earth ground. Severe injury or death can then result if the chassis and earth
ground are touched simultaneously.

U.K. MAINS PLUG WARNING
A moulded mains plug that has been cut off from the cord is unsafe. Discard the
mains plug at a suitable disposal facility. NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUM-
STANCES SHOULD YOU INSERT A DAMAGED OR CUT MAINS PLUG INTO
A 13 AMP POWER SOCKET. Do not use the mains plug without the fuse cover
in place. Replacement fuse covers can be obtained from your local retailer.
Replacement fuses are 13 amps and MUST be ASTA approved to BS1362.
The symbols shown above are internationally accepted symbols that warn of
potential hazards with electrical products. The lightning flash with arrowpoint in
an equilateral triangle means that there are dangerous voltages present within
the unit. The exclamation point in an equilateral triangle indicates that it is necessary for the user to refer to the owner’s manual.
These symbols warn that there are no user serviceable parts inside the unit. Do
not open the unit. Do not attempt to service the unit yourself. Refer all servicing
to qualified personnel. Opening the chassis for any reason will void the manufacturer’s warranty. Do not get the unit wet. If liquid is spilled on the unit, shut it
off immediately and take it to a dealer for service. Disconnect the unit during
storms to prevent damage.

EINLEITUNG
Wir danken Ihnen, daß Sie sich für den Dynamikprozessor 166XL von dbx entschieden haben. Der dbx 166XL ist ein
Zweikanalgerät mit Noisegate, OverEasy® und klassischem Hard Knee Kompressor und PeakStop® Limiter für exakte
Regelung der Signaldynamik für Studios, Beschallungsfirmen, Musiker und all jene Anwender, die einen hochwertigen,
bedienungsfreundlichen Dynamikprozessor benötigen. Bitte nehmen Sie sich etwas Zeit, die Bedienungsanleitung
durchzulesen. Wir wünschen Ihnen viele erfolgreiche Produktionen mit Ihrem dbx 166XL. Die Hauptmerkmale des dbx
166XL sind:
• Gate, Kompressor und Peak Limiter auf Stereo oder echten Zweikanalbetrieb umschaltbar.
• OverEasy® Wahlschalter zur Umschaltung zwischen der bekannten OverEasy® Kompressionskennlinie und der klas
sischen "Hard Knee" Charakteristik des dbx 160, 161 und 162.
• Expander/Gate Schaltung mit einstellbarer Rücklaufzeit und +15 dBu maximaler Einsatzschwelle.
• Kompressor umschaltbar zwischen zwei verschiedenen programmabhängigen Zeitkonstanten zur Anpassung an
einzelne Instrumente oder fertige Mischungen.
• Schaltbare Kuhschwanz Tiefenentzerrung in der Meßschaltung zur Verhinderung von "Aussetzern" durch laute
Baßsignale beim Komprimieren von kompletten Mischungen.
• PeakStop® Limiter zur Einhaltung eines absoluten Maximalpegels am Ausgang des dbx 166XL unabhängig von allen
anderen Einstellungen. Der Limiter liegt im Signalweg hinter den Kompressor, Gate und der Ausgangsstufe und legt
damit den tatsächlichen maximalen Signalpegel am Ausgang fest.
• Echte RMS Pegelmessung: Erfaßt die Energie des Programmaterials auf musikalische Weise ähnlich dem men
schlichen Gehör und klingt daher besser als Verfahren zur Erfassung des Spitzen oder Mittelwerts.
• Unabhängige Bypass Taste für jeden Kanal zum Durchschleifen des Audiosignals auch bei abgezogenem Netzkabel
und zum A/B Vergleich zwischen bearbeitetem und unbearbeitetem Signal.
• 10 teilige LED Zeile zur Anzeige der Verstärkungsreduktion.
• Elektronisch symmetrierte Ein und Ausgänge an XLR und 6,3 mm Stereoklinkenbuchsen.
• Separate Sidechain Anschlüsse zur Steuerung des Kompressors oder Gates durch externe Prozessoren oder Signale.
• DC geregelte Parameter: Das Signal fließt durch keines der Bedienelemente an der Frontplatte. Stattdessen werden
alle Funktionen durch eine Gleichspannung gesteuert, wodurch auch nach langem Gebrauch keine störenden
Potentiometergeräusche auftreten können.

GARANTIEBEDINGUNGEN
Wir gewähren 1 Jahr Garantie ab Verkaufsdatum auf nachweisbare Material und Fabrikationsfehler (ausgenommen
externe Netzgeräte). Der Garantieanspruch erlischt bei unsachgemäßer Handhabung, elektrischer oder mechanischer
Beschädigung durch mißbräuchliche Anwendung sowie bei unsachgemäßer Reparatur durch nichtautorisierte Werkstätten.
Zur Inanspruchnahme der angeführten Garantieleistungen ist der Nachweis des Kaufes (ordentliche Rechnung des
Verkäufers) erforderlich. Transport und Portospesen, welche aus der Einsendung des Gerätes zur Garantiereparatur
erwachsen, können von dbx nicht übernommen werden, das Risiko der Zusendung trägt der Kunde. Die Garantie wird
ausschließlich für den Erstkäufer geleistet.

Frontplatte
EXPANDER/GATE-Sektion
EXPANDER/GATE THRESHOLD-Regler und -LEDs (BELOW/ABOVE):
Dieser Regler stellt den Pegel ein, bei dem das Gate öffnet und das Signal vom Eingang zum Ausgang durchschaltet.
Wenn Sie den Regler ganz nach links drehen (Position OFF), wird das Signal nicht abgeschwächt das Gate wird dadurch
praktisch umgangen. Wenn Sie den Regler ganz nach rechts drehen, werden alle Eingangssignale unterhalb +15 dBu
abgeschwächt.
Die beiden EXPANDER/GATE LEDs zeigen das Verhältnis des Eingangssignals zur eingestellten Einsatzschwelle an.
Liegt der Signalpegel unterhalb der Einsatzschwelle, leuchtet die rote BELOW LED, liegt der Signalpegel über der
Einsatzschwelle, leuchtet die grüne ABOVE LED.
Anmerkung: Die Ansprechzeit (die bestimmt, wie rasch das abgeschwächte Signal wieder auf Normalpegel zurückgeregelt wird) des Expander/Gate ist
intern auf einen extrem kurzen Wert eingestellt, sodaß der Einsatz jedes Tons oder gesprochenen Worts unverändert übertragen wird.
Anmerkung: Das Expansionsverhältnis des dbx 166XL ist intern fix auf ca. 10:1 eingestellt. Bei diesem Expansionsverhältnis treten die normalerweise bei
geschalteten Gates unvermeidlichen Störgeräusche nicht auf. Die Dämpfung beträgt >50 dB.
SC Enable-Taste:
Schaltet die SIDECHAIN SEND und RETURN Buchsen ein und erlaubt so die externe Bearbeitung des Sidechain
Signals. Wenn an den SIDECHAIN Buchsen nichts angeschlossen ist, bleibt die Taste zwar wirkungslos, leuchtet aber
dennoch auf, wenn Sie sie drücken.
EXPANDER/GATE RELEASE-Regler:
Stellt die Geschwindigkeit ein, mit der das Gate schließt, sobald der Signalpegel an der INPUT oder SIDECHAIN
INSERT Buchse unter die Einsatzschwelle absinkt. Mit Einstellungen im Bereich SLOW können Sie Störgeräusche bei
Gesang oder akustischen Instrumenten ausblenden. Der Bereich FAST eignet sich zum Straffen von Schlaginstrumenten
(z.B. Bassdrum, Snare) und Ausblenden von Übersprechen anderer Instrumente auf Schlagzeugspuren.
Anmerkung: Die Rücklaufzeit des Gates "verkürzt" sich progressiv, d h. beim Schließen des Gates steigt die Schließgeschwindigkeit (in dB/s) ständig an.
CONTOUR-Taste und -LED:
Wenn Sie diese Taste drücken, werden die Tiefen im Signalweg der Meßschaltung leicht abgesenkt. Damit können Sie
weitgehend verhindern, daß Tiefenanteile im Eingangssignal speziell bei fertigen Mischungen zu "Aussetzern" im kom
primierten Signal führen. Ist die CONTOUR Taste nicht gedrückt, arbeitet die Meßschaltung nicht frequenzselektiv. Bei
gedrückter CONTOUR Taste leuchtet die CONTOUR LED.
KOMPRESSOR-Sektion
GAIN REDUCTION-Anzeige:
Diese LED Zeile zeigt die durch Kompression, Expansion/Gating oder beides bedingte Abschwächung des Signals an.
COMPRESSOR THRESHOLD-LEDs:
Diese drei LEDs zeigen das Verhältnis zwischen Eingangssignalpegel und Kompressor Einsatzschwelle an. Liegt der
Signalpegel unterhalb der Einsatzschwelle, leuchtet die gründe BELOW LED, liegt der Signalpegel oberhalb der
Einsatzschwelle, die rote ABOVE LED. Im OverEasy® Modus leuchtet die gelbe LED, wenn sich der Signalpegel im
OverEasy® Bereich befindet (s. Abb. 2).
Anmerkung: Beim Ein- und Ausschalten des Geräts leuchten die LEDs kurz auf, auch wenn kein Signal am Eingang anliegt.
COMPRESSOR THRESHOLD-Regler:
Mit diesem Regler können Sie die Einsatzschwelle des Kompressors zwischen 40 dBu (7,8 mVeff.) und +20 dBu (7,8
Veff.) einstellen. In der Position +20 dB werden nur die höchsten Pegelspitzen komprimiert. (Wenn Sie COMPRESSOR
RATIO auf 1:1 einstellen, erfolgt keine Kompression, unabhängig davon, auf welchen Wert COMPRESSOR THRESH
OLD eingestellt ist.)
Im Hard Knee Modus (OVEREASY Taste offen) stellt dieser Regler einen Bezugspegel (Einsatzschwelle) ein, ober
