in minor or moderate injury. It may also be used to alert against unsafe practices.
WARNING: Indicates a potentially hazardous situation that, if not avoided, could
result in death of serious injury.
DANGER: Indicates an imminently hazardous situation that, if not avoided, will result
in death or serious injury. This signal word is to be limited to the most extreme situa

cause little or no harm, but continual or repeated exposure may cause very ser ious
harm.
•Clean spills and fix obviously dangerous conditions as soon as they are noticed.
•Lift and support heavy objects sa fely and securely.

Fasteners
•The fasteners used on the equipment described in thi s manual, and the engin e that powers it are a co mbination of metric and fractional inch. For this reason, wrench sizes are frequently identified in the text, and
measurements are given in U.S. and metric scales.
•If a fastener has a locking feature that has worn, replace the fastener or apply a small amount of releasable thread locking compound such as Loctite® 242 (blue).
•Some fasteners, like cotter pins, are single-use items that are not to be reused. Other fa ste ners, such a s:
lock washers, retaining rings, and internal cotter pins (hairpin clips), may be reused if they do not show
signs of wear or damage. This manual leaves that decision to the judgement of the technician.
Assembly instructions
•Torque specifications may be noted in the part of the text that covers assembly. They may be summa-
rized in tables along with special instructions regarding locking or lubrication. Whichever method is more
appropriate will be used. In many cases, both will be used so that the manual is handy as a quick-reference guide as well as a step-by-step procedure guide that does not require the user to hunt for information.
•Lubricant quantity and specification may be noted in the part of the text that covers maintenance, and
again in the section that covers assembly. They may also be summarized in tables along with special
instructions. Whichever method is more appropriate will be used. In many cases, the information will be
found in several places in the manual so that the manual is handy as a quick-r eference g uide as we ll as a
step-by-step procedure guide that does not require the user to hunt for information.
•The level of assembly instructions provided will be determined by the complexity of reassembly, and by
the potential for damage or unsafe conditions to arise from mistakes made in assembly.
•Some instructions may refer to other parts of the manual for subsidiary pr ocedures. Th is avoid s repe ating
the same procedure two or three times in the manual.

The trimmer line is a fixed length and can easily be
replaced following the diagram on the front of the trimmer
base assembly. See Figure 3.
1. Disconnect and ground the spark plug wire.
2.Remove the worn string from the spindle.
3.Fold the replacement trimmer line in half and insert
both ends through the loop near the edge of the spin
dle.
-
4.Pull the ends of the trimmer line through the loop until
the line is securely beneath the met al tab.
See Figure
4.
5.Cross the line ends and pull each tightly to secure the
trimmer line in place.
NOTE: The line will be trimmed to final length by the blade
mounted under the deflector.
NOTE: Always use 490-040-C035 trimmer line.

skid assembly
NOTE: The skid assembly is available as service
part number: 982-0143.
To remove/replace the skid assembly:
1.Turn of the engine.
2.Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground it to the
engine block.
3.Remove and discard the three nuts and bolts that
secure the skid to the spindle assembly using a pair
of 7/16” wrenches.
4.Lower the skid off of the spindle.
5.Install the skid by following the previous steps in
reverse order.
NOTE: Do not re-use the original hardware, ne w
hardware will be included with the skid

NOTE: The spindle can not be serviced, and must be
replaced as a unit if it gets damaged .
NOTE: The cutting height is adjusted by sliding the disc
that the trimmer line is attached to up or down the
spindle shaft.
•The disc is held in position by two wing nuts, that
must be loosened before making a height adjustment, and re-tightened to hold that adjustment.
•The skid assembly remains fixed, and the disc
moves in relation to the skid assembly.
•The wing nuts cannot be removed from their
studs: the threads are peened.
1. Disconnect and ground the spark plug wire.
See Figure 6.
2.Remove the nuts from the four carriage bolts that
hold the deflector to the trimmer base, using a 7/16”
wrench.
3.Rotate the deflector so that the wide part of the center hole in the deflector will fit past the spindle. See
Figure 8.
4.Remove the deflector.
See Figure 7.

assembly to the trimmer base from the top, using a 1/
2” wrench.
See Figure 12.
10. Remove the remaining nuts and bolts which secure
the spindle to the trimmer base, using a pair of 1/2”
wrenches.
NOTE: Three of these bolts will also hold the belt keeper
in position.

IMPORTANT: Allow the engine to cool if it has been
running.
1.Disconnect and ground the sp ark plug wire.
2.Drain the fuel tank.
3.Position the trimmer so the rear edge of th e tr imme r
base is resting securely on a work bench, and pivot
the handle down.
NOTE: The handle should be securely weighted
down, so the trimmer stands on end.
4.Remove the hex nuts from the carriage bolts that
secure the deflector shield to the trimmer base,
using a 7/16” wrench. See Figure 14.
5.Remove the carriage bolts and the deflector.
