INTRODUCTION
SAFETY
The char ger is designed for lead-acid batteries from 30– 500Ah. Do not use the charger fo r
• any other pu rpose Use safet y glasses and tur n your head away when connecting or disconnec ting a batter y.
• Batter y acid is corosi ve. Rinse immediately with wate r if acid comes i nto contact with skin or
• eyes. Seek m edical advice. Make sure that the cable is n ot being pinched or in contact w ith warm surfaces or sharp
• edges. While ch arging, a battery can emit explosive gases, so it is import ant to avoid sparks in t he
• immediate area. Always provide for prop er ventilation during charging.
• Avoid covering the charger.
• Make sure that the electr ical cable doe s not come into contact with wat er.
• Never charge a frozen battery.
• Never charge a damaged bat tery.
• Do not plac e the charger on the battery wh ile charging.
The elec trical connection must f ull the national heavy current requirements.
• Check the cabling in the c harger before use. Make sure there are no cracks in th e cabling or
• in the protective cover ing. A charger with damaged cabl es may not be used. Always check that the charger has gone ove r to maintenanc e charging mod e before leavin g
• the char ger unattended and connected for long per iods. If the cha rger had not gone over to maintenance charging within 3 days, th is is an indication of a problem. I n this case the charger must be disconnected manually. All batteries fail so oner or later. A batter y that fails during charging is no rmally taken c are of
• by the char gers advanced c ontrol, but ce rtain unco mmon errors i n the batter y can still arise. Don’t leave the battery charger unattended for a long er period of time.
Only mount the charger on a at surface.
This equi pment may not be used by children or by t hose who can not read and understand
• the manua l if they are not supervised by a responsible person who can guarantee that the batter y charger is being used in a safe manner. Store and use the battery cha rger out of the reach of children. Make sure that childre n do not play with the battery ch arger.
CHARGING
Connecting the charger to a battery t ted in a vehicle
1. The power c ord should be disc onnected when c onnecting or dis connecting the battery leads.
2. Ident ify the batt ery termina l that is grounded (connected to t he chassis). The negative
terminal is normally the grounded post.
3. Charging a negatively grounded battery. Connect th e red cable to the po sitive terminal o n the
batter y and the black cable to good meta l engine ground a way from the bat tery. Ensure you do not connect the black c able to fuel lines or sheet-metal body part s.
4. Charging a positively grounded batt ery. Connect the black cable to the negative terminal on
the battery and the red cable to good m etal engine ground away from the battery. Ensure you do not connect the black c able to fuel lines or sheet-metal body parts.
Connecting the charger to an out of vehicle b attery:
1. The power c ord should be disc onnected when c onnecting or dis connecting the battery leads.
2. Connect the red cable to the positi ve terminal on the battery an d the black cable to the
negative terminal.
If the bat tery leads have been connected incorrect ly, the reverse polarity protection system will ensure th at neither the charger nor the battery are da maged.
Star t charging
1. Connect the charger´s AC cord to the power out let. The charger w ill indicate POWER, yellow
indication lamp (B).
2. The lam p for complete ly discharge d battery (1) will illuminate if the battery’s voltage is less than 12V.
3. Normal charging will be indicated by t he following lights: completely discharged battery (1), bulk char ging (2), absorptio n charging (3) or maintenance charging (4). When the maintenance charging lamp illuminates the batter y is fully charge d. Charging will st art if the voltage drops. The char ger can norma lly be connected for months. Recondition ing is indicated by the lamp (5) illuminating.
4. If the bat tery leads have be en connected incorrectly, the reverse polarity protecti on system will ensure that neither t he charger nor the battery are d amaged.
5. If nothing happens. If th e lamp indicat ing the setting and the power lamp remain lit but no other lam p illuminates, t he connection t o the battery or chassis may be p oor or the batter y may be fault y. Another cause may be a lack of volta ge in the AC Power Supply. Begin by improv ing the connection between the battery and charger.
6. Charging can be stoppe d at any time by disconnecting the charger’s AC cord. Always disc onnect the AC cord before disconnecting the batter y leads. When you sto p charging a bat tery installed in a vehicle you should always disconnect the battery lead from the chas sis before disconnecting the ot her battery lead.
BATTERY TYPES AND SETTINGS
The MULTI XS 150 00 can easily b e set for different types of batteries or conditions. The following recommen dations should, however, only be seen as guidelines. Please consult the batter y manufacturer for further i nstructio ns.
Settings are made by pres sing the “MODE-button “ and stepping for ward one press at a ti me
until the required mode i s reached, the but ton is then releas ed. After about 2 seconds the
charger activates the s elected mode. Th e selected mode is saved in a memory in the charg er and remai ns there even if the charger is disconnected from battery and mains.
NORMAL
SUPPLY
RECOND
NORMAL - Normal set ting for wet batte ries, mainten ance free and for most Gel batteries. Some Gel batteries prefer a slightly lower cha rging voltage. Please consult the batter y manufacturer when in doubt.
SUPPLY - The charger operates at a constant voltage. This is the maintenance mode fo r applications w here maximum capacity
from the battery is important, li ke oor sweeper s and golf carts.
Note that t he Spark protection function is suppresse d in this mode.
RECOND - This mode is used to recover deep discharged
ooded batteries where you could expect a stratied acid
(high aci d weight in the bottom, low on top). Check w ith battery manufac turer when in doubt . Use this mode with care, b ecause the high vo ltage will cause some wate r loss. 16V is normally no proble m for electronics in 12V system. Consult your supplier when in doubt . Life of light bulbs will be reduced at higher voltage. Try to disconnect light from the battery dur ing this phase. Maximum effect and minimum risk for e lectronic s is achieved by charg ing a disconne cted batter y.
CHARGING PHASES
MULTI XS 1500 0 charges and analyses in eight f ully automatic ste ps and has three different operating modes, see Battery Types and S ettings.
The battery charger has an 8-step f ully automatic charging cycle:
Desulphation
Desulphation with pul ses recovers sulphated batt eries. Indic ates with lamp 1.
Soft start (Lam p 1)
Start mode for the cha rging cycle. Th e charging current is limited. The start phase c ontinues until the battery’s terminal voltage has risen above the set limit, at which point the charger switches to bulk charging. If the terminal voltage has not passed the voltage limit wit hin the time limit, the charger switches to fau lt mode (lamp 0) and discontinues the charging. If so, the batter y is faulty or its c apacity is too large.
Bulk (La mp 2)
Main charge when 80% of charging takes place. The charger delivers ma ximum current until the terminal voltage has risen to the set level. Bulk has a maximum time, at which p oint the charger automatically switc hes to Absorption.
Absor ption (Lamp 3)
Complete charge up to vir tually 100%. Th e terminal volt age is maintained at the set level. During t his phase the current tapers suc cessively. Once the current has tapered to the s et limit, this phas e switches to being timed. If the tot al time for Absorption exceeds the time limit the charger automatically switches to m aintenance.
Analysis (Lamp 3)
Testing self-discharge. If self-discharge is too high, charging is discontinued and fault mode i s indicated.
Maint enance charging - Float (Lamp 4)
Chargin g at constant voltage.
Maint enance charging - Pulse (La mp 4)
Chargin g varies between 95% and 100% st ate of charge. The battery receives a pulse when the voltage drops and keeps the battery in p erfect condition when it is not in use. The cha rger can be connected for months at a time. The charger continuously measures the terminal voltage to determ ine whether a charging pulse sh ould be initiated. If the batter y is loaded and/or the batter y’s terminal voltage drops the c harger starts a charging puls e until the terminal voltage reaches the set level. The c harging pulse is then discontinued and the cycl e is repeated
innite ly. If the terminal voltage drops below a lower limi t, the charger automatical ly goes back
to the beginning of the cha rging curve.
Recond (Lamp 5)
This mode is used to recover deeply discharged ooded batteries. Recondition of deep
discharged batteries. The voltag e increases with r educed current for a limited tim e period. The
higher vo ltage starts some gassin g and mixing of the acid, which is benecial for both battery
capaci ty and expected life. Note that t he battery could emit explosi ve gas during Recond. Recond is performe d between Analysis and Maintenance.
INDICATORS
Lamp Descr iption

Fault mo de
The char ger goes to fault mode if the time f or gradual star t has been exceeded or if the batte ry’s self-discharge is too high.
TEMPERATURE COMPENSATION
MULTI XS 1500 0 has a sensor cab le placed together with the battery cab les. The units w ill automatically adjust the charging vo ltage if the tem perature deviates from +25°C. A high temperature lowers the voltage and fr eezing conditions is handle d by higher voltage. The temperature is best m easured on or ver y close to the bat tery. Therefore always place the sensor as c lose to the battery as possible when charging. The sensor cable could be prolonged or cut to length with the sam e functional ity. A short-circuited or disconnected sensor is indic ated by lamp A. T he charging voltage is then adjusted to the +25°C co ndition.

equipme nt connected t o batteries. The battery chargers from CTEK produces very high qua lity
voltage and current with low ripple. ***) IP 44 cannot be gua ranteed if the c harger is not positioned hor izontally with t he long side or top side turned up.
reduce d at higher temperatures.
MAINTENANCE
The char ger is maintenan ce-free. The charger must not be opened; doing so will invalid ate the warr anty. If the power cable is damaged it must be replace d by CTEK or its authorized representative. The charger casing can be cleaned using a damp clot h and mild cleaning agent. Remove the p lug from the power s ocket before clea ning.
