Preparation
Before setting up the Cisco 881W meetinghouse firewall, you should have the following:
1. A working Internet connection in the
meetinghouse that you can connect to using
an Ethernet cable
2. A computer (preferably a laptop) with a network port, a contemporary web browser, and a minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768
3. The Internet Service Provider (ISP) support phone number and account information. Plan to activate the firewall during a time when support may be contacted.
4. Your LDS Account (to set up an LDS account, go to ldsaccount.lds.org)
5. A unit number or property number
associated with the building where you’re
installing the firewall
6. Confirmation that you will be able to find and select the correct building using the
Building Validation Tool:
mtm.lds.org/firewall/buildings/validation
7. The box containing the meetinghouse firewall
8. An extra network cable
Overview
The meetinghouse firewall is like a bridge that will connect all of the computers in the meetinghouse
to an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
You should install the firewall in the same general location as the ISP modem. The location should be secure, private, and convenient to an electrical outlet.
As shown in the diagram on the following page, the firewall must be positioned between the ISP and all devices on the meetinghouse network.

Unpack the equipment and confirm that you have each part. Label the blue console cable and set it aside in a safe place. You may need it in the future.
No devices except for the firewall should ever be connected directly to the ISP modem.
Placement
Firewalls and ISP modems should be placed in secure areas that don’t get a lot of traffic.
Attics, drop ceilings, and lockable closets are preferred. Avoid offices with easy access, cabinets that restrict airflow, and environments outside of the firewall operational range. You will also need to occasionally troubleshoot problems, so ensure that the ports and the status lights are easy to access and view. Do not place the firewall near a lot of metal.

Setup & Activation Steps
After the firewall has been powered for at least 90 seconds, open a web browser on the computer connected to the firewall. You should be automatically taken to the Firewall
Activation Welcome page. If not, go to
http://firewall.lds.org. Follow the on-screen
instructions to complete the activation.
4
Screw in the three antennas to the back of the
unit. Upon successful activation, the wireless
should automatically configure itself. It may take up to two hours for it to begin working properly. Information on how to connect to the integrated wireless or how to procure and set up additional wireless access points can be found at
http://mhtech.lds.org.
5
Connect the yellow network cable to the FE
WAN Port on the back of
the firewall and to the appropriate port on the modem.
Connect the power supply to the firewall and to an electrical outlet. Proceed with the activation immediately upon plugging it in or power cycle it before you begin. If your location uses a different power outlet than the North American standard, you will need to replace the included power cable (the segment from the power supply to the wall outlet) or purchase an appropriate adapter. The firewall works with any standard voltage.

Connect a separate network cable to a computer and to port 0 on the firewall. Make sure that the computer is set to obtain an IP address automatically.

Troubleshooting
If you experience problems with activation, here are some things to try:
1. Make sure your firewall is connected to a computer and the ISP modem correctly.
2. Verify the computer is set to obtain an IP address automatically.
3. Go to http://firewall.lds.org on the computer connected to the firewall.
4. Check that you have Internet access at the ISP modem. If not, you will need to contact the ISP support to figure out why. Power cycle your ISP modem.
5. Power cycle your meetinghouse firewall.
If for some reason you have to restart activation, go to http://firewall.lds.org on the
computer connected to the firewall.
If activation was successful, but the filtering
does not work immediately, close all browser
windows and then check again. Use
http://filteraudit.cjclds.net to test the filter.
Test your connection through the firewall and directly to the ISP using an online test such as http://speedtest.lds.org. This will help you get a feel for your connection and ensure the firewall is functioning correctly.

Post-Activation
Connect Computers and Access Points
Once the firewall is set up properly, connect computers and access points through any of the available LAN ports. Use a network switch if you need more ports.
Wired Connections
Wired connections should be installed,
organized, and labeled in accordance with standards posted at http://lds.org/aec and
http://mhtech.lds.org.
Wireless Connections
The 881W includes integrated wireless 802.11 (Wi-Fi). Screw in the three antennas to the back of the unit and place them in an upright position. Upon successful activation, the wireless should configure itself automatically. It may take up to
two hours for it to begin working properly.
Information on how to connect to the integrated wireless or how to procure and set-up additional wireless access points can be found at
http://mhtech.lds.org.
Protect Church-managed Computers
Church-managed computers must be set up and kept up-to-date with the latest security patches and software necessary for secure Internet use.
