Security Warnings Regarding the Use of Wireless LAN Products

A Wireless LAN enables you to exchange information between devices (such as computers) and wireless access points using radio waves, instead of a physical LAN cable. You are advised that unauthorized access could be possible and security features should be configured as appropriate. (See "Security Settings," on p. 2-10 for information on selecting encryption and authentication methods.)
On the other hand, as radio waves penetrate to all areas within a certain radius and go through obstacles (such as walls), the following problems can occur if security settings are not specified.
Transmitted data can be eavesdropped on
Third parties with malicious intent can deliberately intercept the radio waves and possibly steal the following information:
- Personal information such as IDs, passwords, or credit card numbers.
- E-mail content
Unauthorized infiltration
Third parties with malicious intent can access a personal or corporate network without authorization, and possibly perform the following:
- Extract personal or confidential information (information leakage)
- Impersonate a specific individual to perform communication or send out misleading information (impersonation)
- Overwrite and resend intercepted information (modification)
- Send a computer virus, etc., to destroy data or systems (destruction)
Wireless LAN cards and wireless access points have security features to deal with these problems. Therefore the possibility of such problems can be reduced by specifying the security settings of the wireless LAN product.
xvi
The customer must understand the problems that may occur if security settings are not specified and take responsibility for decisions regarding security. It is recommended you specify security settings when using this product.

Standard IEEE802.11b, IEEE802.11g
Frequency Band
Encryption and Authentication Method
WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) Supports 64-bit and 128-bit WEP.
WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access)/ WPA2-PSK (Pre-Shared Key)
802.1X/EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) + WEP
WPA/WPA2+802.1X/EAP
2.4 GHz band (ISM (Industrial Scientific Medical) band)
*1
Complies with WPA and 802.11i (WPA2) standards.
Supports 802.1X authentication and Dynamic WEP. Requires a RADIUS server.
Complies with WPA and 802.11i (WPA2) standards, and supports
802.1X authentication. Requires a RADIUS server. Includes WPA/WPA2 Enterprise.
1-4
*1 The WEP key used with the Wireless LAN Board is a 40-bit or 104-bit key.
System Requirements
RADIUS Server
A RADIUS server is required to set 802.1X/EAP+WEP or WPA/WPA2+802.1X/EAP as the encryption and authentication method.
The EAP-TLS (Extensible Authentication Protocol-Transport Level Security),
PEAP (Protected EAP), and EAP-TTLS (EAP-Tunneled TLS) systems are supported.
NOTE
Authentication with a RADIUS server requires a server certificate, and a root CA (Certificate Authority) certificate. When using EAP-TLS system, a client certificate, and client private key are also required.

Setting the Primary Network to Wireless LAN

1
Before You Start
This section describes the procedure for setting a primary network using the control panel of the machine.
When the Wireless LAN Board is attached to the machine, it combines with the standard network interface equipped with the machine (standard network), to give the machine two network interfaces. As you cannot enable both interfaces at the same time, set which interface to use.
Since the standard network is enabled by default, it is necessary to set the primary network to 'Wireless LAN' to use the Wireless LAN Board.
IMPORTANT
Make sure to consult your system administrator or network administrator when setting the primary network.
For security reasons, it is recommended you see e-Manual > Security to change the defaults of System Manager Department ID and System Manager PIN before specifying the wireless LAN settings.
The Wireless LAN Board cannot be used in conjunction with the Voice Guidance Kit.
NOTE
If the machine enters the Sleep mode with the Wireless LAN Board attached, even if [Low] is set for the energy consumption of the machine in Sleep mode, the energy consumption will be the same as if [High] is set. The time it takes for the machine to shut down after pressing the control panel power switch is also longer than when [Standard Network] is selected.

Checking the Wireless LAN Interface

1
Before You Start
Before starting to use the Wireless LAN Board, follow the procedure below to check whether the LAN adapter of your computer is operating normally.
NOTE
If you are using your LAN adapter for the first time, attach the LAN adapter and install its driver and software before performing this procedure, as necessary. For information on attaching and installing the LAN adapter, see the instruction manuals that come with the LAN adapter.
This procedure describes the procedure for a Windows environment.
1
If you are using Windows XP, select [Control Panel] from the [Start] menu ➞ click [Performance and Maintenance] [System].
If you are using Windows 2000, select [Control Panel] from the [Start] menu double-click the [System] icon.
If you are using Windows Server 2003, select [Control Panel] from the [Start] menu ➞ [System].
If you are using Windows Vista/Server 2008, select [Control Panel] from the [Start] menu.
NOTE
If you are using Windows Vista/Server 2008, click [Continue] if the [User Account Control] dialog box is displayed.
