Facts About Counterfeiting
Throughout the consumer electronics industry, counterfeit accessories like batteries and chargers can compromise performance with inferior engineering and construction. Posing as genuine in appearance and function, they risk damaging the original Canon product by possibly overheating, exploding, combusting, and leaking—at the worst causing bodily injury and property damage. Luckily, with a little knowledge and common sense, it’s not hard to avoid counterfeits and the risks they bring.

Protecting You Against Counterfeit Batteries
Canon continues with efforts to help protect customers from potentially dangerous counterfeits. How can you tell if your Canon battery is genuine? The NB-12L Battery Pack has the official Canon anti-counterfeiting hologram attached directly to it. Also, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II, PowerShot N100, and VIXIA mini X communicate with the NB-12L Battery Pack to identify if the battery inserted is genuine Canon. If a non-genuine Canon battery is inserted into these products, a warning message will appear on the LCD screen. Additional Canon products will be equipped with similar technology in the future.

Join the Fight Against Counterfeiting
As the popularity of cameras and accessories grows around the globe, so does the problem of counterfeiting. It is illegal to sell counterfeit products. Counterfeiting costs jobs, undermines legitimate resellers, and can pose a real safety risk. Counterfeit products are rarely, if ever, produced to the same strict safety standards specified by the government or to the industry to which Canon adheres. The use of counterfeits, which can damage your product or cause increased service problems, may void Canon product warranties. To know what measures you can take to stay safe, go to:

Genuine Canon batteries, chargers, and battery grips are designed to hold a charge, properly fit into Canon equipment, and prevent overcharging, short-circuiting and/or overheating that may cause damage to your Canon equipment.

Identifying and Avoiding Counterfeits
Although counterfeiters are always working to make their counterfeits virtually indistinguishable from genuine Canon accessories, there are a number of ways to identify and avoid fakes. Scrutinize packaging and make comparisons with genuine Canon accessories. Look for the genuine Canon anticounterfeiting hologram on the package when purchasing replacement batteries, toner and single ink tanks. The hologram changes when tilted back and forth. Be vigilant when purchasing through non-US based online shopping sites. Avoid deals that are “too good to be true,” and purchase through authorized Canon dealers or directly from Canon to greatly reduce the risk of inadvertently purchasing counterfeits.
