Preventing Malfunctions
Avoid Strong Magnetic Fields
Never place the camera in close proximity to electric motors or other equipment generating strong electromagnetic fields.Exposure to strong magnetic fields may cause malfunctions or corrupt image data.
Avoid Condensation Related Problems
Moving the equipment rapidly between hot andcold temperatures may cause condensation (water droplets) toformon its externaland internal surfaces. You can avoid this by placing the equipmentin anairtight, resealable plastic bag and letting itadjusttotemperature changesslowly before removing it fromthe bag.
If Condensation Forms Inside the Camera
Stop using the camera immediately ifyou detectcondensation.Continued use may damage the equipment. Remove the CF card, and battery or ahouseholdpower source, from the camera and wait until the moisture evaporates completely before resuming use.
Extended Storage
When notusing the camera for extended periods of time, remove the batteryfrom the camera or battery chargerand store the equipmentin a safe place.Storing the camera for extended periods with batteries installed will run down the battery. (Do not remove the date battery.)

(For CB-5L)
Attach the power cord to the battery chargerand plug the other end into a power outlet.
zThe charge indicator blinkswhile the batterypackis charging and
lights steadily once chargingis complete.
zAfter charging, unplug the batterychargerand removethe battery
pack.
18
zThisis a lithium ionbatterypack so there is no need to
completely use or discharge itbefore recharging.Itcanberechargedat any time. However, since the maximum number ofchargecycles is approximately 300 (battery life), youarerecommendedto only charge the batterypack after having discharged itcompletely to prolong batterylife.
zIt takes approximately 90minutesto bring a fullydischarged
battery pack toa fully charged state (based onCanon’s testing standard).
zCharging timeswill vary according to the surrounding humidity
and battery pack chargestate.
zThe separately sold Battery PackBP-511, BP-512 and BP-514
can also be usedinthis camera.
Battery Pack Handling Precautions
zKeep the battery pack and camera terminals () clean at
all times. Dirty terminals may cause a poor contact between the battery pack and camera. Polish the terminals with a tissue or a drycloth before charging or using the battery pack.
zDo notcover the battery charger with anything, such as a
tablecloth, cushion or blanket, when itis charging.Heat will build up internally and possibly leadtofire.
zDo not charge batteriesother than BatteryPack BP-511A, BP-
511, BP-512 or BP-514 with the supplied equipment. This maycause a malfunction.
zThe battery pack continues to dischargea small amount when left
in the camera even with the power turned off. This shortens the battery life. Remove the battery pack from the camera when itis not in use.
zDo not allow anymetal objectssuch askeyrings to touch the “”
and “”terminals(Fig. A), as this can damage the batterypack. To carry the battery pack, or store it during periods of disuse, always replace the terminalcover (Fig. B) or place itinthe supplied case and store it in a cool, dry place.

Charging the Battery Pack (continued)
When using Battery Pack BP-511A or BP-514, you can distinguish between the discharged battery pack and fully charged battery pack by changing the direction of the battery cover (Fig.C and D).Recharge the battery fully before using it again.
Fig. BFig. AFig. DFig. C
Fully Charged BatteryUsed Battery
Attach so the blue portion of the batterypack canbeseen through the window.
Attach in theopposite way ofFig. C.
zEven charged battery packs continue to discharge naturally. You
are advised to charge the battery on the day of use,or one daybefore, toensure a full charge.
zSince storing a fullycharged battery pack for long periods of time
(about 1 year) can shorten its lifecycle or affectperformance, you are recommended to use the battery pack in the camera untilthe
symbol displays and tostore it at normal temperature (30°C/86°F) or lower. If you do not use the battery pack for long periods of time, charge it fully and discharge itfully in the camera at leastonce a year before returning itto storage.
zThe cameraconsumesthe battery charge when the power ison
even when a function is notbeing used. To conserve the battery charge,be particularly attentive in turning the camera off.
zAlthough the battery pack’smaximum operating range is 0 to
40°C (32 to 104°F),the optimal range is10 to 30°C (50 to 86°F). Atcold temperatures, such as those experienced when skiing, performance willtemporarily decline, reducing the usable time before recharging.
zIf the usable time ofa battery packdiminishessubstantially even
when fully charged, itshould be replaced.

Installing the BatteryPack/CF card
Install BatteryPack BP-511A (supplied)and the CFcard (supplied) into thecamera as follows.Use the Compact Power Adapter CA-560 (sold separately) to power the camera forextended periods (p.182).

22
CF Card Handling Precautions
zCFcards are high-precision electronic devices.Donotbend,
force, or subjectthem to shocks or vibration.
zDo not attempt to disassemble or alter a CFcard.zMoving a CF card rapidly between temperature extremes may
cause condensation to form in the card, leading to potential malfunctions. To avoid condensation formation, place the CF cardin a sealed plastic bag before moving it into a differenttemperature zone and allow it to adjust slowly to the new temperature.Ifcondensation forms on the CFcard, put it aside untilthe water droplets have evaporated completely.
zPlace the CFcard in the supplied case for storage.zDo not use or store CF cards in the following types oflocations.
•Locations subjecttodust or sand
•Locations subject to high humidity and high temperatures
Microdrives are a recording medium with a hard disk. Their merits are a large capacityand a low price per megabyte of capacity. However, they can be more susceptible to vibrations and shocks than CF cards, which use durable flash memories. Please be careful, therefore, not to subjectthe camera to vibrations or shocks when using a microdrive, especially while recording or during playback.
