Laser Safety

This product complies with 21 CFR Chapter 1 Subchapter J as a Class I laser product under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Radiation Performance Standard according to the Radiation Control for Health and Safety Act of 1968. Class I levels of laser radiation are not considered to be hazardous.
Since radiation emitted inside the product is completely confined within protective housings and external covers, the laser beam cannot escape from the machine during any phase of user operation. Do not remove protective housings or external covers, except as directed by this manual.

CDRH Regulations

The Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration implemented regulations for laser products on August 2, 1976. These regulations apply to laser products manufactured from August 1, 1976. Compliance is mandatory for products marketed in the United States.

Important Safety Instructions

Please read these instructions thoroughly before operating the machine. As these instructions are intended to prevent injury to the user or other persons or destruction of property, always pay attention to these instructions. Also, since it may result in unexpected accidents or injuries, do not perform any operation unless otherwise specified in the manual. Improper operation or use of this machine could result in personal injury and/or damage requiring extensive repair that may not be covered under your Limited Warranty.

Installation

WAR NING
Do not install the machine near alcohol, paint thinner, or other flammable
substances. If flammable substances come into contact with electrical parts inside the machine, it may result in a fire or electrical shock.
Do not place the following items on the machine. If these items come into contact
with a high-voltage area inside the machine, it may result in a fire or electrical shock. If these items are dropped or spilled inside the machine, immediately disconnect the power cord from the power outlet. Then, contact Canon Authorized Service Facilities or the Canon Customer Care Center.
- Necklaces and other metal objects
- Cups, vases, flowerpots, and other containers filled with water or liquids

CAUTION
Do not install the machine in unstable locations, such as unsteady platforms or
inclined floors, or in locations subject to excessive vibrations, as this may cause the machine to fall or tip over, resulting in personal injury.
Never block the ventilation slots and louvers on the machine. These openings are
provided for proper ventilation of working parts inside the machine. Blocking these openings can cause the machine to overheat. Never place the machine on a soft surface, such as a sofa or rug.
Do not install the machine in the following locations:
- A damp or dusty location
- A location near water faucets or water
- A location exposed to direct sunlight
- A location subject to high temperatures
- A location near open flames
- A location near devices that contain magnets or generate magnetic fields, such as speakers
Avoid poorly ventilated locations.
During use, the machine generates ozone. However, the amount of ozone generated is not enough to affect the human body. Nevertheless, if the machine is used for a prolonged period of time in a poorly ventilated room, or when making a large quantity of prints, be sure to ventilate the room to make the working environment as comfortable as possible.
Make sure the machine is approximately 4" (10 cm) away from walls and other
equipment for proper ventilation.
Make sure the location is not affected by extreme temperature changes, and always
stays between 50°F and 90.5°F (10°C and 32.5°C).
Make sure the relative humidity of the area is between 20% and 80%.
Do not use or store the machine outdoors.

Power Supply

WAR NING
Do not damage or modify the power cord. Also, do not place heavy objects on the
power cord, or pull on or excessively bend it, as this could cause electrical damage and result in a fire or electrical shock.
Keep the power cord away from a heat source; failure to do this may cause the power
cord coating to melt, resulting in a fire or electrical shock.
Do not connect or disconnect the power cord with wet hands, as this may result in
electrical shock.
Do not connect the power cord to a multiplug power strip, as this may cause a fire or
electrical shock.
Do not bundle up or tie the power cord in a knot, as this may result in a fire or
electrical shock.
Insert the power plug completely into the power outlet, as failure to do so may result
in a fire or electrical shock.
Do not use power cords other than the power cord provided, as this may result in a
fire or electrical shock.
As a general rule, do not use extension cords. Using an extension cord may result in
a fire or electrical shock. If an extension cord must be used, however, use one rated for voltages of 120 V AC and over, untie the cord binding, and insert the power plug completely into the extension cord outlet to ensure a firm connection between the power cord and the extension cord.

CAUTION
Do not use power supplies with voltages other than those specified herein, as this
may result in a fire or electrical shock.
Always grasp the power plug when disconnecting the power cord. Pulling on the
power cord may expose or snap the core wire, or otherwise damage the power cord. If the power cord is damaged, this could cause current to leak, resulting in a fire or electrical shock.
Leave sufficient space around the power plug so that it can be unplugged easily. If
objects are placed around the power plug, you will be unable to unplug it in an emergency.
During electrical storms, unplug the power cord from the power outlet. Electrical
storms may cause damage to the machine and result in a fire or electrical shock.
IMPORTANT
If dust accumulates around the plug of the power cord when it is connected to a power outlet, unplug the machine and wipe the plug with a clean, dry cloth.
Do not plug the machine into the same circuit with appliances such as an air conditioner, television or copier. These devices generate an electrical noise, and may interfere with your machine's operation.
Unplug the machine in the following conditions:
- When the power cord or plug is damaged or frayed.
- If liquid has spilled into the machine.
- If the machine has been exposed to rain or water.
- If the machine does not operate normally when you have followed the instructions in the guides included with your machine. Adjust only those controls that are covered by the instructions in the guides since improper adjustment of other controls may result in damage and will often require extensive work by a qualified technician to restore the product to normal operation.
- If the machine has been dropped or damaged.
- If the machine exhibits a distinct change in performance, indicating a need for servicing.

Disconnect the power cord for safety when the machine will not be used for an
extended period of time, such as during consecutive holidays.
The laser beam can be harmful to human bodies. Since radiation emitted inside the
product is completely confined within protective housings and external covers, the laser beam cannot escape from the machine during any phase of user operation. Read the following remarks and instructions for safety.
Close the platen glass cover gently to avoid catching your hand. Failing to do so may
result in personal injury.
Do not press down hard on the platen glass cover when using the platen glass to
scan a thick book. This may damage the platen glass and/or result in personal injury.
Do not subject the machine to strong physical shock or vibration.
Unplug the machine before moving it.
Do not lift the machine by any of its attachments.
If the machine exhibits a distinct change in performance, this indicates a need for
servicing.

Maintenance and Inspections

WAR NING
When cleaning the machine, disconnect the power cord. Failure to observe these
steps may result in a fire or electrical shock.
Disconnect the power cord from the power outlet regularly, and clean the area around
the base of the power plug's metal pins and the power outlet with a dry cloth to ensure that all dust and grime is removed. If the power cord is connected for a long period of time in a damp, dusty, or smoky location, dust can build up around the power plug and become damp. This may cause a short circuit and result in a fire.
Clean the machine using a slightly dampened cloth with a mild detergent mixed with
water. Do not use alcohol, benzene, paint thinner, or other flammable substances. Check detergent for flammability prior to use. If flammable substances come into contact with a high-voltage area inside the machine, it may result in a fire or electrical shock.

There are some areas inside the machine which are subject to high-voltages. When
removing jammed paper or when inspecting the inside of the machine, do not allow necklaces, bracelets, or other metal objects to touch the inside of the machine, as this may result in burns or electrical shock.
Do not burn or throw used toner cartridges into open flames, as this may cause the
toner remaining inside the cartridge to ignite, resulting in burns or a fire.
CAUTION
The toner fixing unit and its surroundings inside the machine may become hot during
use. When removing jammed paper or when inspecting the inside of the machine, do not touch the toner fixing unit and its surroundings, as doing so may result in burns or electrical shock.

When removing jammed paper or replacing the toner cartridge, take care not to allow
the toner to come into contact with your hands or clothing, as this will dirty your hands or clothing. If they become dirty, wash them immediately with cold water. Washing them with warm water will set the toner, and make it impossible to remove the toner stains.
When removing paper which has become jammed inside the machine, remove the
jammed paper gently to prevent the toner on the paper from scattering and getting into your eyes or mouth. If the toner gets into your eyes or mouth, wash them immediately with cold water and immediately consult a physician.
When loading paper or removing jammed documents or paper, take care not to cut
your hands on the edges of the documents or paper.
When removing a used toner cartridge from the machine, remove the cartridge
carefully to prevent the toner from scattering and getting into your eyes or mouth. If the toner gets into your eyes or mouth, wash them immediately with cold water and immediately consult a physician.

Consumables

WAR NING
Do not burn or throw used toner cartridges into open flames, as this may cause the
toner remaining inside the cartridges to ignite, resulting in burns or a fire.
Do not store toner cartridges or copy paper in places exposed to open flames, as this
may cause the toner or paper to ignite, resulting in burns or a fire.
When discarding used toner cartridges, put the cartridges in a bag to prevent the
toner remaining inside the cartridges from scattering, and dispose of them in a location away from open flames.
CAUTION
Keep toner and other consumables out of the reach of small children. If these items are ingested, consult a physician immediately.

Other Warnings

For cardiac pacemaker users: This product generates a low level magnetic field. If you use a cardiac pacemaker and feel abnormalities, please move away from the product and consult a physician.

Energy Saver Mode

This machine provides an energy saver function. When no operations are performed for a specified number of minutes, the machine automatically enters the energy saver mode.
NOTE
The time until the machine enters the energy saver mode can be specified in a range of 3 minutes to 30 minutes. You can also turn off the energy saver function. For details on the energy saver mode settings, see <4. ENERGY SAVER> of “Menu Descriptions,” on p. 10-7.
The energy saver function does not activate when the machine is in the following conditions:
- When printing out copies, faxes* or other pages
- When sending or receiving faxes
- When scanning
- While a copy job is saved in the memory or when the collate copy or other functions are operating, or when the In Use / Memory indicator lights up
- When paper jams occur
- When an error message appears and the Alarm indicator flashes
- When no paper is loaded in the cassette
- When paper is loaded in the multi-purpose feeder
- When the message <TONER SUPPLY LOW> appears
The machine will be restored from the energy saver mode in the following conditions:
- When receiving print jobs from your computer
- When receiving faxes

This chapter describes the media you can use with this machine, how to load them, and where the documents come out.

Print Media Requirements

For high-quality copies, we recommend using paper and transparencies recommended by Canon.
Some types of paper available at office supply stores may not be suitable for this machine. If you have any questions about paper and transparencies, contact your local authorized Canon dealer or the Canon help line.
Paper Storage
In order to prevent paper jams, follow this procedure below:

To prevent moisture buildup, store remaining paper wrapped tightly in its original
package. Store paper in a dry location, out of direct sunlight.
To prevent curling, store paper flat, not upright.
If the paper is curled, uncurl it before loading it in the cassette or multi-purpose
feeder. Failure to do so will cause paper creases and a paper jam.
Unacceptable Paper
Do not copy on the following types of copy stock. Doing so may result in paper jams.
Severely curled or wrinkled paper
Transparencies designed for full-color copiers or printers
Paper which has already been copied using a digital full-color copier (Do not copy
on the reverse side.)
Paper which has been printed on using a thermal transfer printer (Do not copy on
the reverse side.)

Loading Paper

This section describes how to load paper in the cassette and the multi-purpose feeder.
CAUTION
When loading paper, take care not to cut your hands on the edges of the paper.
IMPORTANT
Do not load paper from the back of the machine with the cassette in place. Doing so may damage the paper feeding assembly inside the machine.
NOTE
The paper in the multi-purpose feeder is fed prior to the paper in the cassette.
The cassette holds up to approximately 250 sheets of 17 lb (64 g/m2) paper.

At the factory, the paper size has already been set to <LTR>. Each time you change the paper size you load in the cassette or the multi-purpose feeder, it is necessary to specify the paper size according to the following.

Open the face up cover located on back side of the unit for face up paper output, or close the face up cover and pull out the output tray located on the front of the unit for face down paper output.

Do not open or close the face up cover while copying and printing.

The paper is delivered with the printed side up from the face up paper output at the rear of the machine. This way is convenient for printing on transparencies, or envelopes which tend to curl, because the paper is delivered straight through out of the machine.
Open the face up cover.

Do not pull the paper forcibly.
This machine has no face up output tray. Remove the delivered paper with your hand.
Do not place an object in front of the face up paper output to prevent a paper jam.

Problem Documents
Make sure any glue, ink, or correction fluid on the document is completely dry
before placing it on the platen glass or loading it in the ADF.
Remove all fasteners (staples, paper clips, etc.) before loading the document in
the ADF.
To prevent document jams in the ADF, do not use any of the following:

This chapter explains how to print the documents from your computer using the printer driver included in the CD-ROM.

Before Printing

Before printing, software must be installed in your computer.
If not, please see the Set-Up Instructions (for MF5730/MF5750 users), Set-Up
Instructions for Networking and Printing (for MF5770 users) or Chapter 1,
“Installation,” in the Software Guide.
Check if the machine is selected as the default printer.
You can check if your machine is set as the default printer when you open the
[Print] dialog box in an application and your machine is selected in the printer box. (See “Printing Documents,” on p. 4-3.)

The general steps for printing a document are explained below.

When making copies on LTR-size paper after having continuously copied on paper smaller than LTR-size paper, the copies may be dirty. To prevent copies from being dirty, wait about 1 minute before making copies.

If you intend to make a copy and print with a thermal transfer printer using the same sheet of paper, make the copy first. Failure to do so may make copies dirty or cause a paper jam.

This chapter briefly explains how to scan documents into your computer using the scanner driver included in the CD-ROM.

Before Scanning

Before scanning, software must be installed on your computer.

There are two methods of scanning documents to your computer:

Using [SCAN] on the operation panel of the machine
IMPORTANT
For better scanning quality we recommend that you place documents on the platen glass. If you use the ADF, the scanned image might not be clear.
This section explains how to scan using [SCAN] on the operation panel of the machine. By pressing [SCAN] ➞ [Start] on the operation panel of the machine, you can scan documents to your computer.

Place the document on the platen glass or load it in the ADF.
For details on how to place documents, see “Setting Up Documents,” on p. 3-3.

If you are asked to select the program to launch, select MF Toolbox Ver4.7.
Scanning starts.
The MF Toolbox and the MF Toolbox settings dialog box will open, but the document will be scanned without pressing [Start].

When you use [Start] for the first time, a folder with the scanning date will be created in the [My Pictures] folder in the [My Documents] folder, and your document will be saved in this folder. If there is no [My Pictures] folder, the folder with the scanning date will be created in the [My Documents] folder and your document will be saved in this folder.

This chapter explains how to clean the machine, replace the toner cartridge, and repack and transport the machine.

Periodic Cleaning

Your machine requires little periodic maintenance. This section describes the necessary cleaning procedures for your machine.
CAUTION
When cleaning the machine's exterior or the platen glass, be sure to disconnect
the power cord before cleaning the machine.
For the MF5750/MF5770 models, print any received faxes stored in the memory
before disconnecting the power cord, since the documents in memory are backed up only for about 3 minutes.
Do not use tissue paper, paper towels, or similar materials for cleaning; they can
stick to the components or generate static charges. Use a soft cloth to avoid scratching the components.
Never use volatile liquids such as thinner, benzene, acetone, or any other
chemical cleaner to clean the interior of the machine; these can damage the machine's components.

Wipe the machine's exterior with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth moistened with water or diluted dishwashing detergent solution.

Cleaning the ADF Area

Black lines may appear in copies when the ADF is used to feed documents. This is caused by paste, ink, correction fluid, or other foreign matters in the read area of the platen glass (shaded area). Use a clean soft cloth to wipe the read area clean. Take particular care to clean at the locations where the black lines are appearing on copies.

If you have trouble getting the glass clean, wipe with a cloth moistened with water or a mild neutral detergent, and then wipe the glass dry with another cloth.

Paste, ink, correction fluid, and other foreign matter can soil the platen glass when you send a document through the ADF while the paste, ink, or correction fluid on the document is still wet. This is what causes black lines on copies. Whenever you load a document in the ADF, always check to make sure that any paste, ink, or correction fluid that is on the document is completely dry.
When cleaning the read area of the platen glass, take care not to damage the white roller located on the center of the ADF.

This section describes the approximate number of printouts that can be made per cartridge.

Canon Cartridge X25: Approx. 2,500 printouts (A4 at 4% dot coverage*).
* The term “A4 at 4% dot coverage” denotes a document on which the area covered
with toner is 4% of the total area of an A4-size sheet.
Maintenance
The actual number of printouts that can be made per cartridge depends in part on
the exposure setting, room temperature, and humidity.
If you print a large number of documents which contain heavy print or many
photographs, toner consumption will increase, and white streaks will appear on printouts sooner than indicated above. Toner consumption will also increase if you print with the platen glass cover left open.
If you print small size documents or documents with less dot coverage, you may
be able to print more sheets of paper than indicated above. However, dark bands might appear on printouts if you keep using the same cartridge for an extended period of time.

Handling and Storing the Cartridge

This section describes the precautions to ensure optimum copy quality.
Handling Precautions
WARNING
Do not throw the cartridge into open flames, as this may cause the toner to
ignite and result in burns or a fire.
The cartridge emits low level magnetic flux. If you use a cardiac pacemaker and
feel abnormalities, please move away from the cartridge, and consult a physician.
IMPORTANT
Never attempt to disassemble the cartridge or open the drum protective shutter.
NOTE
If the machine is brought from the cold outdoors into a warm room, or if the room is
rapidly heated, condensation may form inside the machine. This can adversely effect the quality of your printouts (e.g., copies are completely black). When the machine is exposed to such conditions, allow at least 2 hours for the machine to adjust to room temperature before attempting to use it.
When handling the cartridge, take care not to allow the toner on the jammed paper to
come into contact with your hands or clothing. If they become dirty, wash them immediately with cold water. Washing with warm water will set the toner, and make it impossible to remove the toner stains.
Always hold the cartridge as shown so that the side with the instructions (A) faces up.
Do not forcefully move or push the drum protective shutter (B) in any way.

CAUTION
Keep cartridges and other consumables out of the reach of children. If the contents of these items are ingested, consult a physician immediately.
IMPORTANT
Place the cartridge in its protective bag so that the side with the written instructions faces up. Then, place the bagged cartridge into its shipping box. Store the unused cartridge out of direct sunlight.
For partially used/opened cartridges, place the cartridge in its protective bag so that the side with the written instructions faces up. Then place the bagged cartridge into its shipping box and store it away from direct sunlight.
Avoid storing the cartridge in front of heaters and humidifiers, etc. Store it in a location where the temperature does not exceed 104°F (40°C).
The recommended storage conditions are as follows:
- Temperature: 32°F to 95°F (0°C to 35°C)
- Relative Humidity: 35% to 85%
Be sure to remove the toner cartridge from the machine when disposing of the machine.
Do not stand the cartridge on end or turn it upside down.

Storing Partially Used Cartridges
If you remove a cartridge from the machine, store the cartridge as described below. Place the cartridge in its protective bag so that the side with the written instructions faces up. Then, place the cartridge into its shipping box. Be sure to securely close the lid of the shipping box.
If you do not have the protective bag or shipping box for the cartridge, store the cartridge in a dark location.
Recycling Used Cartridges
Canon has instituted a worldwide recycling program for cartridges called “The Clean Earth Campaign.” This program preserves precious natural resources by utilizing a variety of materials found in the used cartridges that are of no further use, to remanufacture new cartridges which, at the same time, keeps the environment cleaner by reducing landfill waste. Complete details concerning this program are enclosed in each PC Cartridge box.

If you do not follow these precautions, the machine may be damaged or the quality of your printouts may be adversely affected.

Pull out the cassette completely, and remove the extension cover. Push in the output tray, and close the document feeder tray. Grip the handles on both sides of the machine and lift it carefully, as shown in the illustration above.
CAUTION
When carrying the machine, be sure to hold it in the designated places as shown in the illustration. Dropping the machine can cause personal injury.

Transporting the Machine by Car

Pack the machine, using the original packing material and box. Place the machine on a level, stable surface.
IMPORTANT
Do not leave the machine inside a car for a long period of time; the temperature can become very high or low.
Avoid rough roads; excessive vibration may damage the machine or adversely affect the quality of your printouts.
Place a cover over the machine. Do not leave the machine in direct sunlight.
When moving the machine, use the original shipping box that it was packed in when you purchased it.
When using the original shipping box, do not place the power cord or other objects on the ADF; this may damage the ADF.

CAUTION
There are some areas inside the machine and cartridge which are subject to high voltages and high temperatures. Take adequate precaution when performing internal inspections to avoid burns or electrical shock.

Push the paper release levers back to their original position and close the face up cover.
IMPORTANT
Be sure to push the paper release levers back to their original position. If the levers are left pushed down, the paper jam error will not be resolved.
Never push down the paper release levers while printing. This could result in damage to the fixing assembly.

Insert the cartridge back into the machine, then close the front cover.
